    There is some special beauty about an air-cooled engine. I cannot describe it, but somehow I like it a bit more over a liquid-cooled one. No matter whether it is the GT2 or a "ordinary" diesel Tatra which is ridiculously loud if you ever heard that on your own ears...

      Great engines and lovely sounds (even the tuned Beetle). On the plus side too there is no need for all that toxic coolant rubbish that get s flushed away constantly. Oh and therefore much lighter too.

    With your addition of the Chevy Corvair, my faith in your work has been raised to a higher level! See I’ve owned a number of air-cooled engine vehicles, both 2 and 4 wheel. The best 4 wheel air-cooled vehicle I’ve owned, was a number of Chevy Corvairs, all with their flat six engines, with a design to facilitate dual exhaust with ease, all the was needed were two u shaped pipes that were mounted to the exhaust manifolds, with any turbo flow mufflers with my favorite stinger tailpipe ends peaking out from under rear. I had that setup in two of my Corvairs, one set on a lowly 80hp, 3speed manual 61 coupe and a beautiful light blue 65 Monza Convertible, with matching light blue interior , 110 hp, 4 speed that ran very well! Many young guys an girls loved the look an sound of that car. Not quite as quick as a Mustang V8, but could smoke any 6 cyl Mustang! Plus with good modern radial tires and shocks, the correct tire pressure would out handle any Mustang on a tight course.

    WAIT - HUH, WHAT, Corvair was one of the most dangerous cars to drive. I know that you are not from the states....but this is a fact that is HIGHLY debated......Ralph Nader was a carpet bagging, ambulance chasing reporter. We had a few different Corvair style cars and never had an issue of them being unsafe. Besides reliability, these cars were no more unsafe or dangerous than other cars on the road. Want to talk at not being safe - 1970's American trucks with gas tanks behind the seat...forget an accident...the fumes!!.
    Please, check your facts - Cheers Henry

    • @themikeshow
      @themikeshow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ralph Nader used sensationalim to build his career. I don't understand why people believed his made up facts about a fine car, the Corvar.His book led to the death of the Corvair, a car that might still be in production if it weren't for a young man manipulating facts to make himself famous.
      VisioRacer, you obviously didn't research the Corvair very deeply before you made your myth perpetuating statement.

    • @railsrust
      @railsrust 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@themikeshow Actually, people give Nader WAY too much credit in killing the Corvair. Ironically, he extended the life of the Corvair by a few years because they didn't want to look like they were bowing out to Nader. They were going to shit can the car before Nader came out with his book because sales had dropped off for the Corvair a lot. Ford took many of the idea and concepts of the Corvair and one upped it to make the Mustang. Like the Monza and Corsa Corvairs, the Mustang was a cheap economy car with an enhanced engine, a trim package and a 4 speed manual transmission. The reputation of the car being terrible is BS though, for sure. My dad has owned over 200 of the cars. If they were more dangerous than any other car of the era, he and I would both be dead by now.

I've seen a few "rat rods" powered by the inline 5 version, as they're a good size for most older vehicles and make a CRAZY sound bring diesel, two stroke, and air cooled.

    Hi Visio, before i started to watch i was hyped, i wont lie as big fan of aircooled engines. I even own one. And it was lovely to see unique engines like tatras, that... with Porsche you failed bro.
    First of all you put twice same engine. Porsche/VW T1 engine was used in Beetle, Transporter. Ghia, Porsche 912, 356 and many others with size from 1.1l to 1.6 stock and tuned to even 2.3 litre.
    While 912 was little bit different from standard T1 engine it was still modified 1.6l T1, then they give it a Type 4 VW engine in 912E Porsche. So you could save some time by just finding beastly sound of T1 engine as racing 1.6 sound gorgeous that tuned for high HP are just BEASTS! And mention what cars was used.
    Then Tatra Nazikiller, nickname was given because heavy V8 aircooled engine was positioned high in car and make it very unstable, NEVER! just never compare it to Porsche.
    Porsche since begging (include beetle) was famous of absolute great stability, control and easy driving, boxer engines mounted on back, give low point of gravity and low weight, that's the reason why 911 was loved and raced everywhere. And was one of first cars that had great balance ratio. Really wanna know where you found those info about it, especially compare it to corvair with is more similar to tatra nazikiller.
    Only dangerous 911 was overpowered versions in dumb assess hands, PERIOD. lol

For example, you can swap an engine from that 911 to VW beetle. Just couldn't imagine, if VW beetle honking at you behind when riding a 911 at 250 km/h... For cars that go foward for a living (racers) Air cooling works perfectly fine as it means less weight and ease of maintainence and use. Only compications are dirt and traffic. Any vehicles working in colder countries work much better with air cooling as less to freeze up.

    Deutz V8 in the Iveco TurboStar?
    Kawasaki KH triples?
    BSA DBD34 Gold Star?
    Race spec Citroen 2CV?
    There's plenty enough for a sequel!

    It took me 30 years to understand why the Beetle had such an exhaust note. Flat 4 & those slip on pipes. Without the pipes it loses the whistling/rustling sound. Then with headers & a different silencer even more different. I grew up at a time where you could buy a running car for €50. 😂

    One of the best sounding air cooled engine, in my opinion, is the Wright R-1820, 9 cylinder radial engine. At idle, it sounds like a Harley Davidson V twin. At higher RPM, it sounds like a WWII fighter aircraft. Another great on is the Pratt and Whitney R-2800.

    That Tatra has an electric motor sound. Thats how loud emotors should be if they are performance level so you still feel that sense of power.
    That thing is on the same level of noise as the internal combustion engine.
