And it's usually better 😂 I'm not a fan of the Lidl tofu in those packs, the one that they have in the special weeks in the smaller, smoked/soy sauce/basil one is nice though. But house brand tofu, especially the medium one 🤤

I hate that Alex is my internal monologue here 😅 but yeah, times are hard, and right now the 20p here or there really does make all the difference. I know I can't afford to check if my soy milk is organic, or if the cheaper tinned tomatoes have more water in them than the second cheapest. But having the choice is wonderful, and knowing Lidl has so many organic options is good! Also, fun fact, the Tesco's Wicked Kitchen tofu is £1.85 for a 300g block!

I enjoyed your budget food shopping video. I'm in the US and even though we have a Lidl not far from where I live, they are not as inexpensive as yours. Also, if I bought the amount of food you just bought, I'd pay over double what you paid. I can't get over that you got spaghetti for .28P and the flour was so cheap! Also, I just bought blueberries and they were "on sale" for $3.99 US. The majority of what you bought shocks me as far as prices go. I don't understand why we pay so much here. Ever since the pandemic, when the prices went up so high, no supermarket here has lowered their prices back to where they used to be. I know we are in some economic crisis here (and of course in Europe too), yet you can still get great prices on your food. Thanks for taking us along on your food shopping. I really liked watching what you bought and seeing the prices.

Thank you! I’ve tried to explain this on previous budget videos that food in the US is waaaay more expensive, and that wages are NOT higher here as many want to say in response. Federal minimum wage in the US is lower than the UK minimum wage.

Our groceries in the US are way more expensive (this shop would probably cost me $70+ at Trader Joe's), but I think we pay less in energy costs than the UK. It probably balances out some between sectors.

Yes, way way more, and the produce where i live in NJ, both organic, and non-organic, in most or all stores, looks atrocious.. Hardly anyone seems to care about the quality of the produce, even in how it's presented and stored in the stores...The main focus seems to be on meat...i have seen better looking produce from watching videos, in other areas of the US, though...Even Misfits Market looks like it's a bit better, but they keep raising their prices like everyone else...🐦

I am always blown away by how cheap food is in other parts of the world. I live in NZ and i calculated how much this shop would cost at my local PakNSave (our most budget grocery store). It was $138.30 NZD which is £67. Obviously some of the veg isnt in season here (tomatoes, blueberries, capsicum) but even most of the pantry basics are double to cost. Im very jealous that you have such affordable food!

    • @miyounova

I lived in NZ for close to a year, before massive inflation hit pretty much everyone. Didn't eat fresh fruit during that time, no fresh tomatoes either, very limited veggies. Couldn't afford it, and we weren't even on low wages. It was insane.

    • @courtanneking
      @courtanneking 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@miyounova yes fresh produce is expensive here regardless of if it is in season or not. Was looking forward to this budget video because I wanted to see how Lidl in the UK is different from Lidl in Finland and some of the things available are quite different! I'm jealous that they had bigger tofu packages, we only get the 200gr packages here. Many things are the same, like very slim selection of mock meats, but in the last year alone they have introduced a lot more products and also vegan cheese for the first time, so there is hope that they'll expand the range even more. Also seems to be the same that they're always out of things or don't stock up often, at my Lidl you sometimes don't even find basic veg like leek because they have run out...

Here in Italy, there aren't lots of products I saw in you video (coconut oil is only available during their "theme weeks", no sausages at all etc) but I cannot complain' about the veg selection (chicken, felafel, "tagliata" which is the famous Italian fiorentina cooked and cuts into strips, tofu - regular, smoked, with spinach, with curcuma or curry, hamburger regular/meat look-a-like :D/with mushrooms, tomatoes etc/ and lots of veg cheese) nor for the prices. 'Cause the tofu with spinach, for example, is the less expensive compared to the others competitors: it's 1.39 euro vs 2.99, or 3.50 or 4 and more. So, I'm pretty satisfied! This is so interesting! My husband and I are vegetarian, he's dairy & gluten allergic, and I'm soy allergic, so our protein comes primarily from beans and lentils, eggs for my husband, and dairy for me. Here on the west coast of Canada we shop at the cheapest option, lots of off brand (Great Canadian Superstore aka President's Choice), and use their credit card to collect reward points for cash off groceries. We average $660 CDN a month (including $63 a month in delivery fees because we live on a gulf island), so that's just over $80 each per week, but also includes dinners for a senior auntie that I cook for, so let's say $75 each per week. Doing the currency conversion, that's 44 british pounds per week, so we are paying more than double here compared to what you're spending there. Crazy!!

I love Lidl and the difference in my shopping, the variety and price is great. I love their plants and the german healthy products. I eat little meat but I do eat meat and find fish and salmon and feta cheese and the yogurts and milk very good. I also buy the porridge oats and their nuts etc are great. I like alot of their products and have become a complete convert. I get the odd fun thing there for my grandchildren and the staff are friendly. Even the toilet rolls and bleach i now get there. Our grocery bills were about 500 euros a week for a family of 3. Now we are meal planning and the total is around 60 to 140 euros a week

I found Buckwheat ramen noodles at Lidl the other day (granted, I live in Italy, so it was the Lidl Italia) but check their 'international' section which changes every so often.

By the way you can use soya in coffee, you just put the soya in with the coffee before the hot water. I do it everyday :)

love these videos, my nearest supermarket is lidl, absolute hate it, they never have stuff in even when you go in a morning when they've just filled the shelves, I also find it's noticeably more expensive than aldi.

I shop at Lidl mostly and in my local Lidl they now have 3 types of vegan sausages, tempeh, vegan ice cream, sausage rolls, steak bakes, yogurt, vegan jellies, and cheese. They just recently added their vegan cheese back after removing it and I found vermondo vegan mayo in the ‘limited’ section I think if they kept their vegan items all year round and added a few meat & dessert substitutes I could do my complete shop there without any stops to Tesco when I crave a meat/dessert substitute

If you love Asian inspired recipes I highly recommend checking out your local Asian shops! 3 portions of tofu at my local Asian supermarket is only £1.89 (600g I think) compared to 99p for one portion at Aldi or the expensive Cauldron and Tofoo brands! Same with things like miso paste, the little jars in supermarkets are a rip off. Also got a litre of soy sauce on sale for £1 the other week. 😬

If you have local Asian supermarkets that is 😅 I live in a city so I have one a 10 min drive away and it's well worth the extra effort for the savings given how fast I go through tofu lol

Oh my goodness! This is the same amount of money i spend for 2 people a week in Poland. We Don't have any polish supermarkets so lidl and other stores have prices of food items simmilar to other countries (because they want profit). But here we don't make much money per hour 😢 I make around 3£ per hour. Its very sad. In italian lidl i would pay exactly the same for the same groceries while making 3x less than someone from italy. It's very sad with supermarket like that. 😢 The prices of items you showed in the video are EXACTLY the same here .....

It's interesting to see how Lidl's range varies from country to country. Here in Sweden we definitely have vegan mince in the freezer section (and a bunch of other "meat" basics like meatballs, burgers etc). Maybe it's a supplier thing cos here they stock a swedish brand of vegan products, not quorn 🤷🏻‍♀️ I miss how cheap food is in the UK though! We'd never get that trolley for that price at Lidl here.

I think I'd be very interesting to have an estimate of how much the average weekly share of stock items, condiments, spices, oil and the like would be. I do agree that it's cheaper to cook from scratch most times, especially if you are a bit more experienced and thus sometimes able to swap expensive ingredients for more affordable ones. But those items it still do cost money, especially if you want to have a certain variety on hand to have some taste variety.

And definitely good to buy those type of ingredients and other pantry items like cannend stuff only when on sale for like 50% off or 1+1 deals etc. And to make sure you have enough to bridge iver until the next sale so you never have to buy them on full price.

My top tip for hiding carrots in sauces or soups or stews is to grate them (the big grater holes are fine). I hate hate hate the texture of cooked carrots but if you grate them and sauté for a bit with the onions, they really cook down and almost disappear, leaving no icky textures xD

    Hiya,
Love your shopping videos, really helpful. I went to Lidl today, and left disappointed. They usually do a cheap, accidentally vegan, chocolate bar which I use in baking. Good thing I checked the ingredients because they have increased the price, by quite a bit, but have also decided to now add milk😢😢😢

You can make almond milk and oat milk at home and it tastes way better than the processed stuff. 1 cup almonds soak over night, blend with 3 cups of water and filter through a nut bag, add a touch of salt and honey to taste (I only add the touvh of salt and it's delicious). Oat milk is ever easier no need to soak, blend 1 cup of oats with 3 cups of water - only for about 30 seconds though otherwise it might get claggy (not had this problem but others have) again add salt and honey to taste. Recipe is from downshiftology I think it's called. Will last 7 days in the fridge

Meat is so expensive. I’m the only vegan in my household of 4 and I can only dream how reduced my shopping bill would be if everyone else was vegan as well!! I also make everything from scratch which also helps with budget. I’ve found processed food is expensive. Looking forward to the meals you are going to make.
