I have a bit of an opposite hack for folks new to cooking, which is to experiment by limiting spices in the cupboard and in cooking for a while, using just one spice in a dish to see what it can do (along with salt and maybe pepper, which are just standard seasoning). I am someone with a huge cupboard of spices and learned to cook from childhood, but it wasn't until I started a project of using only one spice for a week or month at a time that I really started to deeply understand spices and herbs. This is how I discovered that if I added cumin to a dish, it would yield a meatier taste. So then I started experimenting with adding cumin to lentils, onions, carrots, minced mushrooms, and peas as a foundation for a vegan shepherd's pie. When I lived in India the family I lived with taught me to experiment with spices this way in dal and sabzi, with salt, turmeric, and chili being the basic foundation, then trying to add one spice on top of that to see how the flavor comes through. Really helpful for building flavor knowledge and making experimentation simpler, and to learn that when you use salt and spice appropriately, a little goes a long way.
Top tip for beginners is to visit your local library an borrow books. Or see what books at other libraries in the same area - you can often have them transferred for free/low cost (mines 50p)
Really enjoyed this, I have only eaten meat in one meal since January 1st 🙌 I know you have done budget vegan food shop videos before but new viewers may not realise that a plant based diet really doesn’t need to be expensive! My food shopping costs me so much less now and I thought it would be pricey. Can’t wait to buy your book on payday 😊
I've been vegan for almost seven years (which is how long I've been watching your channel. I found it when I was trying to find recipes and vegan food advice). But hearing your advice on what to stock up on was still so interesting and helpful. I'll definitely be referring back to it later!
Those carrots are gorgeous! It's hard to find carrots with their tops intact at my local grocery stores. When I do find them, it feels like such a novelty. Then I get to live out my childhood game of pretending to be Bugs Bunny. 😄
I am in love with your vegan omelette recipe. It’s a game changer for me and in ASDA THEY HAD A MASSIVE BAG OF GRAM FLOUR FOR £3 how cheap is that. Thank you maddie love all your recipe and your cookbook is amazing thank you xxx
Maddie you are so beautiful, and those red nails are poppin’! 😍 I’m currently an omnivore but this video has me feeling inspired to make some vegan dinners! 😋 also love that you buy frozen pizzas for “emergencies.” We also put “emergency pizza” on our shopping list 😂
Hi Maddy! I love love love your videos. I really appreciate your authenticity and your down to earth personality. I have been vegan for about 9 years and been following you for a while. I really resonate with you and the type of vegan you are. I won't ever force someone to be vegan but try to inspire with my delish recipes
You are so organized! Your meal planning seem so easy when you say it! Love a good Shepherds pie....would be interesting to taste a vegan one. Thanks for sharing with us. Love the vlog!
I made a vegetarian paella from a vegetarian cookbook and it said to substitute saffron for turmeric as saffron is very expensive and substitute rice for pot barley and it turned out really delicious 😋. Love your channel ❤
Interesting vlog and I do the same thing on my phone - shopping list and daily meals. It really is a nice way to plan your meals for the week and ensures your shopping list has all it needs on it 🥰
I am taking your advice and trying to eat more plant based meals. Last week I made 4 vegetarian meals, this week not so many but it is a step in the right direction. Thank you for the inspiration ☺️
This was helpful, especially to someone growing their vegetable meal recipes. Incorporating what we already have in our pantry as the base of our recipes feels less daunting, than searching all new recipes & ingredients.
Hi Madeleine. I have made your paella twice, tweeking a little with veg I have, spice mix lovely though. Love your book and your you tube videos. Keep inspiring x
Hi Maddie I received your cookbook on January the 20th. I want to thank you very much for all the hard work and love you put into your cookbook. I appreciate you. Sending hugs from across across ❤❤❤❤
Ah, a video for me! Useful for having a “getting things in stock” video. This is my fifth attempt at doing Veganuary but I’m not beating myself up this time when I realised my 100&1000s contained beeswax or I’ve still got some honey in the cupboard. I’ve been mindful of what animal products I do have in stock for the past 5 years or even when I’m out eating fish. I have the new bosh meat book and a lovely book called “part time vegan.” I need to buy your book too.
Great vlog. We've done meal planning for about 10 years, it helps out so much. But like you said, we only plan for Mon-Fri, because you just don't know what's going to happen on the weekend. Another tip, is getting some chicken salt aswell, I use it ramen and it's so fantastic and completely vegan. Also can use it, if your making your own vegan meats.
Hello, thanks for all the videos. Always look forward to watching. Question - what type of black salt do you buy ? Not sure if there is a difference 🌱🙂
Thanks for these tips! I wonder if it would be possible for you to do a video about how to use some ingredients that are unfamiliar to non or new vegans. In particular nutritional yeast and tofu. I am loving your cookbook.
Just wanted to say I made a huge batch of your black bean meatballs last week and i've had to stop myself from eating them for every meal! Would defo recommend!
Still enjoyed the video even though I am not a beginner vegan because I have been vegan for 8 years and love 😍 being vegan. Love 🥰 the video and love 💕 Madeleine & ❤ Alex.
Great video Maddie! I'm wondering if you could do a dedicated video to your easy go to, but satiating snacks. I'm sick of eating the same ol' typical vegan snacks. Hummus, crackers etc... ❤❤
The tune of the washing machine was really helpful actually. Reminded me I needed to empty mine (We also have a Samsung :-D) Love to see what is in your pantry. I think we have to much stuff we don't use often or use at all. Going to make lists of everything and see what needs to be used.
This was really helpful. I tend to start with gathering recipes when it make MUCH more sense to start with taking stock. And speaking of gathering recipes, I have a massive Excel spreadsheet of my cookbooks with a list of ingredients only to find through you a much more sophisticated and efficient method of housing that information. Eat Your Books is AMAZING! They even have my most-used book which was published back in 1996. Thank you for the suggestion.
Omg this is my dream. I tried to make it work in this house so I could have a walk in pantry but there just wasn’t any option for it! I’d love a separate room!!
Yeah for the Ohio State shirt!!! 😂 I just did a pretty big stock up of my pantry and I feel so accomplished! 😂 Even in my one bedroom apartment, I got a pretty big pantry.
Love your meal planning tips and using what you already have on hand - I like to cook, but I find the process of planning for a family extremely overwhelming. Slowly but surely getting better at it :) Thanks for sharing as always!
I keep a grocery list by aisle on my fridge, and as I cook and use up items, I check them off as needed on the grocery list. I still go over the list before I shop, but I don't have to do a full inventory.
Hello, I whizz up a whole bag of spinach/kale with a little water, and divide it between silicone cupcake cases, then freeze. When frozen, tip out into a bag and you have small frozen cupcakes of greens to use as and when. Hope that helps :)
I pick through it, wash it and dry it by spreading it on a clean towel. I put some in a lettuce keeper for the week and then freeze the rest in a bag. Whenever I make a soup, pasta dish, curry, etc, I crumble frozen spinach into them.
I have always loved your canussa vegan bag. They hsvr a code “ January” which has 25 per cent off. I know you fancied the blue bag. (I can delete this if prefer) ❤
We love this video! So many people can benefit from seeing how to start out on this lifestyle! 😊🌱We have a Vegan Vlog TH-cam Channel where we feature lots of veg food! We'd love if you have time to check it out! Thanks! 🍓💕💗
“The Shepherd’s Pie serves 6-8 so I know we can have that for two dinners.” 😂 🥰
Hahahhaha
You’ve just gotta have more than one helping when it comes to shepherds/cottage pie 😋
Me, being vegan for 5 years: "oh a beginners vegan video, maybe I'll learn something new" 😂
Same lol im like 8 years in but i love beginner vids bc the recipes are usually easy with normal ingredients 😅
Hahaha omg this is amazing
Haha same!😂

Been vegan for years but still love beginner vids bc of the simplicity 💚✨

This is so great to hear it was still helpful as an experienced vegan!
Food content will always be my favorite content that you do 🥰!! I eat more plants now because of watching you 😉!!
Ditto!
Those carrots are gorgeous! It's hard to find carrots with their tops intact at my local grocery stores. When I do find them, it feels like such a novelty. Then I get to live out my childhood game of pretending to be Bugs Bunny. 😄
Thank you, I'm just making the switch!
Amazing news!
Love how you include new vegans in your videos😊and gotta say you look so young and cute with the sweater your wearing and your hair in a ponytai!💜

Iuqd the pause the video because I thought hey on earth is my washer going off when it's not on😂
I love you pantry cupboard 🥰 What size jars do you use for your pasta/rice etc? Xx
Would be nice for you to do a video with savoury and/ or sweet recipes with less common grains such as barley, amaranth, etc
Hi Maddie I received your cookbook on January the 20th. I want to thank you very much for all the hard work and love you put into your cookbook. I appreciate you. Sending hugs from across across ❤❤❤❤

My menu planning occurs in the supermarket, then I can see what’s on offer, what’s in season etc.
I like to see all the ingredients you have. I like cooking so the only place where I accumulate is the kitchen ❤
❤️❤️❤️

What a great video idea! So approachable as a viewer 👍

You are simply the best 👌 😊
We enclosed a 7' x 9' portion of our back porch to form a pantry so no, I don't think your pantry stock is excessive, Maddie 😂
Omg this is my dream. I tried to make it work in this house so I could have a walk in pantry but there just wasn’t any option for it! I’d love a separate room!!
@@MadeleineOlivia Love your house anyway!
maddie we have the same washing machine and i got such a fright when yours went off 😭
Haha sorry I haven’t done your washing
I also have a Samsung washing machine and had to pause for a minute thinking it was mine! 😂😂😂😂
Yeah for the Ohio State shirt!!! 😂 I just did a pretty big stock up of my pantry and I feel so accomplished! 😂 Even in my one bedroom apartment, I got a pretty big pantry.
Vinegar keeps better in the fridge. Nuts and seeds keep safer in the freezer. 🙂
I am vegetarian but i do like vegan food
Thanks great tips and ideas ❤
love the ohio state rep!!!
Hahaha, my washing machine sings the same song to me, I love it 😄
Love your sweatshirt 😂 I live in Ohio. Lol
I started rearranging my cupboards after watching this 😂

I have a list in my phone notes, can easily edit that way and handy to be able to look at it whenever and wherever you are
I'm trying to eat less meat per week. I didn't realise I liked lentils as I always cooked dried and they were super meh. Tinned lentils though 👌
There are different types of lentils, maybe you were cooking the 'wrong' ones, or in the wrong way. Nothing wrong with jjust getting a tin tho 😁
Love this ! I love your pantry and when you go food shopping at the farmer shop!! 😍I’m here for it !! Can you say food porn ! Lol 😂
I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and CFS , so aiming for a healthy diet
😊
Thank you #savesoil #Consciousplanet
Vegan works for me turned my diabetes round
Hi olivia could you write the titles of the 3 books ? 🙏
How do you keep spinach ok I I am on my own and I hate flinging stuff in the bin and herbs 🌈🐝

But I need help because I can’t have sugar and no carbs due to my diabetes what can I do I need help please
Do you use spices, vinegars etc that are out of date? Asking for a friend 😏
Sell by dates for spices are quite long and I get through them quite quickly!
I have always loved your canussa vegan bag. They hsvr a code “ January” which has 25 per cent off. I know you fancied the blue bag. (I can delete this if prefer) ❤
I have dairy free xxx
Is that an Ohio State sweatshirt? I’m from Ohio
