    Put the lettuce in a cup of water at least 1 hour before using them. They get nice and crispy and it’s a great way to keep them crispy in your fridge

      I was just going to say that 😁. Just cut the root end off 1st so the leaves can suck up the water. Works wonders with any lettuce, celery, most herbs...

      Use slightly moistened newspapers and wrap your salads etc to store in the fridge . I bought fresh salad heads and stored them for almost 2.5 weeks keeping them fresh and crispy just making sure to re-moisture the paper and removing the odd yellowish leave occasionally. Has to be mentioned though that this was fresh salad from the field yet did absolutely surprise me 😊

    Hey Taz, I've been following your cooking journey for years and I have to say you've really made great progress - you're basically there now. If you can throw together a tasty meal from a bunch of ingredients that's all you need to be a decent home cook and I would have eaten every single one of the meals you made. Well done!

      You do have to take everything into consideration though - not just food. Income, taxes and all other expenses, a lot of which are not obvious to somebody who doesn't live in the country. Britain has always had cheap food, but other costs are higher than elsewhere, and the average income is also lower than in other places in Europe.

      One of the key things I’ve noticed is that the products are not available. For example, if you used to buy a budget brand of pasta for 30p, it’s not that the brand is now 40p, it’s that it is unavailable. So you have to buy a totally different product for a much greater amount. And that is the same for every product. Same with offers. Certain products would fairly reliably come on offer frequently enough that you could last it out till it came round again. But they stopped the offers. Then they put up the price. Then they stopped the product. So now you have to buy a different product which is vastly more expensive. It’s hopeless. I used to manage really well using basic ingredients, offers, and occasional treats. Never felt I was missing out. Now I’m lost.

    I think you should stick to £25 but try other supermarkets to see how they compare with the same budget. So proud of how far your cooking and eating has come.

    As a student, that sort of chickpea veg curry you made is one of my go-to meals to cook. You can buy the ingredients for about £2, it only takes a few minutes to cook, it'll last for a few days or you can freeze it, and it's actually healthy

    - Big tip with lettuces and a lot of salad stuff with the core attached. As soon as you get home stick them in really cold water (you can add ice cubes if you are in a warm country) and if you have space in the fridge you can stick it in there for a few hours before using.
    I like using left over plastic Chinese takeaway tubs as they are low and wide and can support any floppy leaves. If it has a decent core, you can also try re rooting it in water on the counter. Once rooted you can stick it in a plant pot or drain-able container, with a water capture, like a saucer and use it for "cut and come again" lettuce. As the main stem root has been cut from the core, you will mainly have smaller leaves coming back from the centre but if you can wait longer or have grow lights, they will get bigger.
    Don't forget to change the water often during the week. You can re grow spring onions, leeks, like this no problem. With the bigger ones i would suggest removing some off the outer layers, before putting in soil as bad soil can get into the folds and make it soggy. They don't like have saggy old skin or flaps.
    - I think what Taz is saying is that oily fish has a lot of Omega 3 (and depending on the fish also Omega 6 and 9). These are good for your brain, eyes and motor function. No you don't get to drive better, it's about your joints, well not those ones but great for us old people anyway or those that get stiff when still for a long time. Well at this point i give up on this topic! lol
    - Apples are clean and healthy! These look like Granny Smiths, which are wholesome eating apples. Pectin that Taz mentioned, is what is used to make jam set and be like jammy rather than runny liquid.
    Apple skins and cores can also be used in other ways. The seeds aren't a problem but i like to throw them out in the food bin, unless you want to try and plant a tree (good luck). Whilst they do contain some cyonade (sp), i have more worries about kids swallowing small penny shaped plastic toys than this and it doesn't add to what you can make.
    You can pop apple peels and cores in a jar, fill with water and add sugar. Cover the jar with a cloth an elastic band so it can breathe and leave on the counter out of sunlight and in about 30 days you have unfiltered apple cider vinegar. This is great for cleaning windows, for the skin or making fly traps for your plants indoors. White layer is ok and means the ferment is working. You would need to filter this properly to be used in cooking, so not recommended.
    You can also bake the skins, use those bread ends and left over bread at the end of the week, with things like cinnamon, nutmeg, etc, milk and butter to make bread and butter pudding. It is nice with raisins or other left over fruit or peels. I would stick you bread ends in a paper bag before freezing. It's the plastic bag that makes it mouldy. in a paper bag or a proper wood bread bin, they tend to go hard but can be made into croutons, bread crumbs and yes bread pudding to name a few.
    You can freeze peeled, cored chopped apples, with a bit of lemon juice to stop the browning.
    Keep the fruit and veg peelings and maybe source some red worms from a garden and create a mini desktop compost maker from and old salad spinner! They love banana peels and so do the plants! #Zerowaste

    Stewed apples are good with cinnamon as well. Cinnamon is also known to help with gut health, as well as have anti-inflammatory properties

    Can I suggest watching Budget Eats on Delish. June's series doing budget eats was seriously the only reason I watched their channel, she is by far one of the most unique thinkers when it comes to food & cooking that I've ever seen. I think half the adventure is getting as much variety as you can in your set budget, finding places that allow you to stretch that budget even more. She'd find dollar bone bags & make her own beef bone broth & there's still meat in the bones so she always pulled all of it off once cooked & it was like a 2 in 1 for only $1. She'd find dollar produce vendors, buy dried beans & lentils to make her own flower using anything she could to stretch that budget beyond anything I could do & she was doing this in New York one of the most expensive cities in the US. Just some food for thought

    i love that you give therapy as a whole attention, because its not really talked about and a somewhat forbidden subject. And your way of introducing someone to your early adulthood is also very comforting and healthy. However i have only heard quite bad storys about betterhelp. And i hoped, that especially a channel like yours wouldnt support that. Maybe you just havent heard about these bad experiences, and thouht of it as a generally good Idea.     I also buy those cheap LIDL fruit & veg boxes, they're good value, with quite a varied selection. There isn't usually anything very bad, but if anything is a bit old & tired, leave it in a bowl of cold water overnight and it will freshen up; and it is cheap enough to trim off what doesn't.

    Try getting a box of Japanese curry like Golden Curry or Vermont Curry. The roux cubes are so flavorful and you just throw them in the pot or instapot towards the end and stir. Japanese curry is sweeter than other curry so cutting up and apple or sweet potatoes pairs really well. It's a great way to eat more veggies. Throw peas, carrots, potatoes, onions or whatever you think sounds good in there & it will most likely work.

    It's always fun to see the difference in prices as I'm from Canada. That wonky veg box is a great deal. Love seeing your progress in cooking.
    Maybe for another video you could do would be getting 2 ingredients from every aisle of the grocery store or 2 items of a certain price from each aisle.

    The frozen veggies can be freezed for months
    Try chickpeas curry with chicken and potatoes amazing minus the veggies
    You had extra chicken, and you could have made chicken pasta added some of the coconut cream for creamier taste and the side broccoli
    The apple and peaches with some cinnamon and honey to oatmeal yummy
    You had so many ingredients to work with

    Banana sandwiches are definitely a childhood classic that I find to be a comfort as a young adult. A squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt, when you make stewed apples, will elevate the taste experience. Salt in sweet stuff balances the flavour profile and gives it a certain depth. This was a great video!

    You even could've baked cookies as a snack: Just mash the bananas, add oats until it kind of feels like a soft cookie dough and use some cinnamon! Let sit for a monent, then bake for 15 minutes. Just did this today with an overripe banana and it turned out surprisingly great 😂

    With a base of potatoes, Carrots & celery (which I hate raw) you can make a variety of soups and pasta sauces which can really help if you're on a budget.
    Adding Sultana's into the porridge and stewed apple is an extra option

    Love this challenge but please please please don't get your nutrition advice from TikTok! 💜 The only "detoxing" you need is what your liver is already doing! It's a big red flag if anything claims to detox you.

    Hello hello my advice to anyone trying to stick to a budget yet consume fruits - peel and cut up your bananas, seal them and freeze if they're starting to look funky, you can use them to blend them into your yogurt, milkshake, pancakes or porridge in the morning, as they thaw very quickly! :)

    I am so proud of you taz I’ve watched you for a really long time I remember when you had no confidence in the kitchen but now you are fluorescing I am a lot like you anxious and lots of issues in general (some of this may be true I don’t want to assume) but cooking and baking are the one things I know I’m good at I don’t get cocky often but these things I am I am only cock when I know I am good xxx

    I challenge you to 3 challenges:
    The first challenge is that you to to only eat food that you've cooked for one month. Budget is unlimited but if you wanted to have a budget, it's up to you.
    The 2nd challenge is to use any remaining ingredients/food (leftover from the 1st challenge) and see how long you can live off them (until you no longer have 2-3 meals a day). You can still use 5-10£ if you need to add an ingredient(s) to enhance a meal.
    3rd challenge is to grow a plant or flower from a seedling to full bloom.

    Meal 1: I’d make broccoli and fish pasta.
    Meal 2: potatoes egg and veg fry up
    Meal 3: coconut and chickpea curry
    Meal 4: eggy soldiers
    Meal 5: chicken fried rice
    Pudding: apple crumble just need flour for 50p
    Pudding: plum tart or plums and custard

    Hey Taz, you are doing great with food eh, a quick thing to add whenever you feel like you are missing on seasoning in the food it’s mostly you put in less salt, just try to add a bit of salt (even after the curry is cooked) and try it then, it will be awesome with that.

    I live off £0 during the winter because of dumpster diving. The containers literally works as fridges because the temperature outside is the exact same as in your fridge at home. The stores throw out SO MUCH good food, and most of the time they don't break open their packaging, so it's literally like fresh food, just for free. You should try it.

    The wonky bed box looks fresh and is so cheap. Actually, it looks a lot fresher than the "fresh" and overpriced production at regular price in my local Lidl (not in the UK). Here they usually let the unsold fruits and veggies to rot as long as possible and rarely lower the prices.

    I love getting the tinned mackerel in spicy tomato sauce, add any veg, with pasta or rice, and it's a very quick easy meal ❤

    Had to do the equivalent in Australia on a backpackers budget with Aldi. Lived off Tuna pasta, pesto pasta and curry for ages. So easy to buy ingredients, meal prep and freeze it so each meal came out to less than $5 with all the necessary nutrients.

    Hi sweetie love your videos you make me smile xx just one thing when you freeze something from fresh always put it in a freezer bag I noticed the chicken thighs were frozen in their original packaging which is not freezer safe just put a freezer bag over it as it will get freezer burn loved all your food it looked yummy xx

    Well done Taz, look at you with some serious cooking skills! Not a fan of mackrel but give me a tin of albacore and look out, one of my favorite to make beyond a "tuna sandwich" is pasta, frozen mixed veg blanched, tin of albacore, bread n butter jalapenos or if out spicy bread n butter pickles all mixed with ranch dressing and chilled. Since I'm bad at using up most fresh veg quickly I opt for assorted mixed blends and use them for a myriad of dishes curry's, stew, pasta salads and so on. Side note get yourself a note book to jot down the ingredients for the dishes you make name them as you see fit and who knows one day there could be the Taz cook book.

    It’s crazy to me how you guys in the uk handle vegetables and fruits without gloves or any type of care. In Spain, we have plastic bags and gloves to touch the vegetables and fruits in the supermarkets

    something to have a variety in your place to just give it a refreshing break if you have rich food on your plate, try to shred green apples raw and add chaat masala it's soo good for some reason it gives like fresh kachumber vibes and you can add carrots and other salad veg if you want to do scrappy cooking and i sometimes just eat it as a salad that I can never get tired of.

    If you like the mackerel, try it on toast. Toast the bread, top with mackerel & heat up under the grill.
    Bloody lovely for a lazy I can’t be bothered meal. My Dad used to make us this either for a weekend brekkie or an easy dinner if you had a big lunch
