    Every time I watch your food shopping videos I realize how much more food costs in the states. Even when you’ve done organic food shops, it’s been vastly cheaper there than it is here. It seems like we pay twice as much over here. Though it also varies state to state.

    • @KiraHelenRose
      @KiraHelenRose ปีที่แล้ว +57

      For example, you were standing near those vegan meat alternatives and the shelf tag read £1.25. That’s $1.47 in US currency. A product like that in the US would likely run between $3.00 to $8.00 depending where you live and shop.

    • @MsIdgie1
      @MsIdgie1 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes, exactly!! We usually never have that type of selection of vegan meats either at Aldi’s.

    • @KiraHelenRose
      @KiraHelenRose ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@MsIdgie1 I feel like the amount of food they got (for just under £25/$29) would cost around $50 to $100 in the US.

      @MsIdgie1 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@KiraHelenRose yes, at least $50. Our vegan meats and cheese is so much pricier! I wonder how much they pay for Violife. It’s usually $4-6 here.

    Great to do a cost of living update.
    Aldi stopped selling dried lentils. They used to but I've not seen for months.
    Aldi have never sold tofu - but Lidl have recently started selling a massive block of organic tofu for £1.99! (It's in the bit with the hummus, plant burgers etc)

    This is really great, some great advice! I have a tip though, as a baker I can tell you that buying the cheapest carb options (pasta, bread, noodles, etc) they have used the worst quality flour to make those products, hence why they can sell them so cheaply. It's a far greater option to buy a bag of decent quality flour (maybe £2-£3, not wholegrain unless you know what you're doing with it) that will last a couple of weeks and can be used to make these things in batches. ALDI and Lidl notoriously use low quality ingredients for anything that isn't fresh produce, so I try to make it myself whenever I can!

    I’m in the US and often during the pandemic the vegan sections were constantly out of or low on foods that use to be consistently stocked (meat and dairy alternatives).
    It started to get better during end of 2O21 but once inflation hit, “supply chain” news stories etc it rapidly dropped back down. Now being almost out of everything vegan has become a new normal. Shopping has turned into a “let’s see what they have” adventure farther then choosing/ deciding which vegan brand you like best.

But the best part is there rewards app, you get free items, deals on products and money off on your next shop, which aldi have yet to do.

We basically live on loads of boiled root vegetables, rolled oats, nuts, seeds, rice, beans, pulses, fruit and greens. We make our own bread. It would be cheaper if we didn't buy chicken thighs for the dogs. Every store normally has specific days and times of day that they reduce stuff at that is about to go bad or go over the sell by date - a lot of stores do it daily with certain parts of their stuff (like veggies or meat for example). Some stores will tell you when those days and times of day are, others will not. Just ask - they can't say more then no. If you notice when those days are, take advantage of that. It a) helps your budget and b) is great for the environment because it helps to reduce waste over all. BUT you never know what will be reduced which obvs makes it difficult to plan around.

Concerning protein, you could just add some sort of legume to the stir fry like peas, or make some kind of meatballs out of seeds/quinoa/legumes. I get most of my food via Olio and Too Good to Go (also Lidl £1.50 boxes sometimes and there is a surplus supermarket near me in Notts so I'm very lucky!) and it's not only really reduced my food bill, it's also a really good way to shop ethically and rescue produce that would otherwise gp to waste. (I'm also vegan like you by the way!) I don't know if Olio and TGTG are big near where you are (sadly it can sometimes be a bit of a lottery to get good produce) but might be worth a try!

      It's also so interesting to see the difference in Maddy's Aldi and mine (also in England)... She has a much bigger vegan and vegetarian section than I do! Luckily (?), I have a Morrisons just across the road from my Aldi, so go there to get what I couldn't find. And Sainsburys near work, so that's where I go for tofu.

    Your bag of flour would cost $7.99 (CAD) at my local Canadian Foodland grocery store. The conversion is 5.11 GBP. Canadian food prices are off the charts.

      This!!!! I just posted about the cost of groceries in Ontario and wanted to scroll through the comments to see if any Canadians commented. I bought an iceberg lettuce the other fay for $4.99.

      @@sydneyvank3434 2 days ago, I purchased 5 full (reusable) bags of groceries at Sobeys. $300.00 (CAD), mostly produce (about 1/3 organic), about 5-6 processed items. Thankfully, I have a “comfortable” household income, but I really don’t know how most Canadians cope with the price of food. It’s insanity! I live in New Brunswick.

      The price of 1 organic tomato is more than $1.00 (CAD)!!!!!! Not much cheaper for a non organic. The only affordable vegetables are carrots and potatoes. Fruit is unaffordable for the vast majority.

      And infinitely cheaper than groceries in Canada. The only affordable food in Canada currently are dried beans, lentils, and carrots.

    I’ve missed these videos so much! Will plead guilty that I unsubscribed a while back once I realised they weren’t much of s thing anymore and then I found your TikTok showing what you got in this shop and im subscribed again. I spend ages looking for well done, U.K. based veggie/vegan budget shop videos and I’m having to rewatch content from ages ago 🤣 please keep this as a semi regular thing 🥰

    Joining everyone else in the comment section because HOLY CRAP how cheap food is over there! Although the money spent is different over in my neck of the woods, I’m still happy to watch these since similar items are cheapest anyway. So I’m glad to get inspiration for recipes 😊

    I think asda or tesco superstore would work better as they would have all the options Included dried lentils. Tesco do aldi price match as well on fruit, veg, pasta etc.

    My locals are aldi and right opposite is morrisons, I get almost everything I can in aldi as its so much cheaper, the only things I have to buy in morrisons are tofu and cheese as aldi as far as I know has never sold tofu and aldi near me in Ormskirk doesn't sell vegan cheese.

    I've never been able to get tofu in Aldi. However, Lidl is usually pretty good for tofu. Tesco is actually the cheapest place to get tofu at the moment. The Cauldron brand is about £2 for 400g (ish). Cheapest I've found.

    I really like this kind of video with creative cooking on a budget (like AtomicShrimp).
    I would, however, like to see the concept of seasonality addressed; not everything is in season all the year round (depending on where you live obvs), e.g. I don't buy tomatoes in the winter because they don't taste of anything, being out of season... We are lucky that where I live we have not yet reached the point of strawberries in December (season is May/June) and prices reflect that, too. For instance, locally grown oats have been off the shelves for a while but now the harvest has gone through, they are back and I'm not being offered oats from 1000s of km away, yay.
    This is something that the Too Good to Go people do well, reminding us of what is in season at what time, there are plenty of tables available online showing that, too. TGTG is a great app, btw, in many countries.

    $1.18 to the pound right now. You spent $27.91 USD. THAT'S CHEAP. In Walmart which is the closest cheapest grocery store around here, everything you bought would have cost at least $75 USD, or 61.50 pounds. As an example we bought 8oz vegan beef strips for $7.75 USD or 6.35 pounds. 5lb of all purpose flour here cost $4.25 USD or 3.57 pounds. A head of organic iceberg lettuce is $3.87, and a tin of organic chickpeas is $1.43.

    I was going to say what so many other people have said about your grocery prices being so much less than ours in the US. (Even Aldi US prices are much higher than Aldi UK.) What also strikes me is that Aldi in the UK has so many more items than Aldi US does. Our selection is quite limited in comparison. (However, we do have tofu at my Aldi.😊) The other difference I’ve noticed is that you have even more unnecessary packaging than we do. Strange to see that because I hear more people in the UK and continental Europe talk more about the environment than people in the US do. Sad to say. Anyway, I enjoyed the video, thank you!

    German Aldi has tofu and it's my fav because it's relatively cheap for how much comes in one package and I prefer the flavor even over much of the handcrafted tofu from local manufacturers. I hope UK Aldi does have it in general or gets it some day because I adore it and it's consistently sold out pretty fast in my aldi.
    Totally forgot to say I love this series and I'll keep watching it as long as you make it. And you look great lately, you're glowing! I'm so happy the channel has grown but that you're still making the videos I originally subbed for too. Right now they're a lifesaver.
