  • In this video I am helping my friend to start his newly bought 1963 Volvo P1800. As you can see this car is not in the best shape but still looks awsome!

    Ben restoring mine for almost six months. Kept me busy through the corona lockup. Should be completed by April 2021.

    Although the English-built Jensen P1800 series spanned from 1961 into early 1963, this particular 1963 Volvo appears to be an early Swedish built model. The clues I see in the video are: data plate says "Volvo Goteborg-Sweden" not "Assembled in England by Jensen Motors Ltd. for Volvo," there is no metallic fabric at the bottom of the door upholstery, the "red line" area on the tachometer is light red and starts at 6500 RPM not 6000 RPM, there are no C-pillar emblems, the hubcaps are not full wheel covers but rather Amazon style hubcaps, there is a backup light in the license light housing, and there are separate parking lights in the front turn signal housings. The first Swedish built 1800's were very similar to the previous Jensen built ones except for minor details like these. Their official name was P1800-S; with the "S" standing for Sweden. Later, from 1964 through 1969, the official name was simply 1800S.

    Perhaps you might call Volvo telling them you need new car keys for this 1963 Volvo P1800 as a suggestion so you won't hot wire anymore, even when you fully restore the car like new.

    If the hydraulic jack under the engine fails, the 2 stands on the front axle will not prevent the car from lowering too much...

      Thanks for your comment but we did have it just on the stands at some stage. It all took 3-4 hours so only a small bit is in the video.

      Hello I am an designer. So I think this is a realy great volvo car, and great engineers!

    SU carbies don't haved an accelerator pump so there isn't much point working the throttle when you are trying to start it. The carby dampers should have engine oil not ATF. No big deal though.
    These cars are absolute rust buckets but I would love one - particularly an ES.

    Engine turns over very well; great that you got her going. But I don't think she's a Jensen-built vehicle; the ID plate would suggest otherwise, I think. What's the chassis number? Kindest regards, Peter A

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it seems that it's chassis number is 7000 something which makes it P1800S?

    • @wurlitzer895
      @wurlitzer895 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HeapsofProjects Yes, could well be. I'm not sure when the P1800S became simply 1800S, but someone certainly will! Still, 7000 makes it a very early car, and one to be cherished and loved. I hope you derive much pleasure from owning and restoring this wonderful car. Do let us all knows how it goes, won't you? Kindest regards, Peter A :) :) :)

      @@wurlitzer895 The P1800 chassis numbers were from 0001-8000, the 1800S from 8001-30000, so chassis number 7000 would make it a C series P1800 built in 1963 but a Swedish built one, not a Jensen built one as these went up to chassis number 6000 . The Car's chassis tag should say "Goteburg Sweden" rather than "Assembled in England" which the Jensen ones had. In summary I think your Volvo is a P1800 built in the transition period between the last Jensen built P1800 (up to chassis 6000) and the 1800S (D Series) built from chassis number 8000. My own 1800S is an 8000 series one also built in 1963 (December).

    Instead of hot wiring it, I would have put a push button, to start it, the other possibility is somehow,pull out the lock cylinder,and connect annother lock, lets,say a lock from an amazon or so to use the lock with key, were there anymore P-1800, in the background.

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ignition lock and ignition coil are connected with a metal "hose" in this car and can't really be hotwired without breaking. Getting the starter motor running was no problem, just the spark side of things. We just used coil from another car and it worked fine. Also, the lock cylinder can't be pulled out without breaking it if you don't have the key.

      @@HeapsofProjects isn*t the lock , & cylinder the same as the Amazon, the other possibility that I was thinking, is a push button, like the mechanics use to start an engine , since it has to be grounded fet a piece of black covered wiring, connect to either the starter or is it a generator and the red cable from inside the car, also I saw in the background, some other P-1800, I don*t know if they were Jensen or not, also I don*t know how easy or difficult, it can be to connect one from annother P-1800 to at least see if itwill go, please restore that car, it has a unique body style, I have seen the P-1800, with the big glass in the back, they made a newer version of what would be the P-1800,sportback.
