The Montana Black with Graphite would be a good basecoat for a helmet that you want to paint further. As for the Gloss White, I'm going to be using that for the edge of a sword, whilst using a Gloss Grey for the main blade. Hopefully it turns out how I'm envisioning it to.
I first clicked on this video because I thought “cool! Someone else who does non full size helmets” (I have a Batman, Red Hood, and a few Marvel mini helmets I made, on top of a few full size Marvel and Star Wars ones” but then I became interested in making them for my daughter lol she would love what you did on those last two
That’s exactly the video I needed before I started painting my Mando armor. I do prefer the gloss black version. My problem is I’m going to be matching the black series helmet so I’ve got to test this on a small piece and compare it to the helmet. Great video my friend. You can send all those extra helmets to me, you’ve got the address 🤣🤣
@@Special_FX I left it alone, and it never really looked exactly right, but it was good enough for me. I think you could just apply the graphite to the Harvey helmet and clear coat it after
Gloss black and a flawless finish is what’s needed for the graphite to really shine. What I do now is black primer with a 2K show clear coat, seems to work the best.
Yes, but you really need to use a high quality clear coat or it loses its shine. I recommend a 2K clear. But you can skip it and just always add more graphite as it rubs off.
Yes I think so, I did a smaller helmet for daughter using iridescent pigment powders and that worked, but I also did a light coat of tack-it. I would still try it over the clear coat, only add adhesive coats if you need to
I would recommend an extremely high gloss 2k clear coat, otherwise it will dull the finish. You can skip the clear coat and just reapply more graphite if you get any spots
Powder doesn’t need to dry like a paint, you can clear immediately. Highly recommend a nice clear. The $5 2X clear by rustoleum will take away a lot of the mirror shine.

That was just what i was looking for, will try it this week in some prints. Thanks for the tips and congrats on being a awesome dad!
Thats a super cool way to get metallic finish!
Super interesting test! Been wanting to paint my westar 35 for my mando cosplay and I’m considering this method!
Go for it!
This an interesting comparison; however, it's hard to tell under the lights you have. Over all this was helpful. Thanks for posting.
Saved me a lot of time and effort. Kudos.
Cool...paint jobs!! Thanks for showing the work!!

They were pretty fun to do!
Thinking about doing this for a set of Wolverine claws I just printed 😁
Ooooooh that would be epic!
That's awesome man!

I'm about to try and match my black series Mando helmet. What did you end up doing to match it the best?!

This is solid info. 👌 Appreciate it.
Hey, I'm here for you bro. I'll take a helmet 😁ps. Love the black helmets. Anyway, your final pieces really turned out well. Excellent job sir 👏
Awesome brother 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
For getting a good chrome effect finish your are ment to put it down over black
I have my mando helmet repaired, last owner burned the right side of the helmet, also gloss black then alchrome 124, gun metal gray gloss.
I just bought an airbrush and some duralumen, can’t wait to see who that looks compared to the graphite rub.
Did you put anything on it prior to graphite powder? Primer or seal?
Gloss black and a flawless finish is what’s needed for the graphite to really shine. What I do now is black primer with a 2K show clear coat, seems to work the best.
Do you seal the helmet after applying the graphite powder or not?
Yes, but you really need to use a high quality clear coat or it loses its shine. I recommend a 2K clear. But you can skip it and just always add more graphite as it rubs off.
Have you tried graphite over colour?
I have, small tests anyway. Mostly metallic, but color almost gives it a pearlescent chrome look.
Do you think it’s possible to use chrome powder used for nails for this ?

@@TheBrodalorian thank you! Your video is very helpful
Can I just grind up a pencil and use that?
I suppose, that is what graphite power is, but it’s not expensive stuff to just buy.
Black base coat all day long for me
Yeah, I’ve made a lot of changes since then. I do a black primer, a 2k show clear, metallic finish (anyway) then another 2k show clear to seal
Do you need to finish it after applying the graphite with a clear coat?
I would recommend an extremely high gloss 2k clear coat, otherwise it will dull the finish. You can skip the clear coat and just reapply more graphite if you get any spots
Thank so much for getting back to me
What particle size is the graphite you are using? I found a video where someone used 5 micron, wich looked really good, but I can't find it anywhere
No idea, I used cretacolor from Amazon
Question: how long do I wait to use clear coat after I have applied my graphite powder on to my helmet
Powder doesn’t need to dry like a paint, you can clear immediately. Highly recommend a nice clear. The $5 2X clear by rustoleum will take away a lot of the mirror shine.
Duplicolor 1K clear is affordable and be found at O’Reilly‘s auto parts, but a 2K is best
@@TheBrodalorian thank you so much !!
I have a full mando build video I loaded not too long ago. Check it out, turned out good.
@@TheBrodalorian I’ll take a look!

Of course! These were just throwaway paint tests
