    Which is the best 1980s Porsche 911? The Turbo was King, but the 3.2 Carrera cost half the price, so which is best? Here we test two Prussian blue 911s, both from the same G model era, but which offer two very different drives. Both cars are available at Philip Raby Porsche.

    3.2 with the G50 is the ultimate in classic motoring from a usability, practicality and smiles per mile factor

    One of the ultimate surveys carried out asking Porsche Experts (one of them Ruf) to score their top Porsches of all time and the 3.2 Carrera came out 3rd… 230bhp at 1000kgs, no driver aids with an engine that will see past 300k miles reliably. Walter Rohl said it was one of his favourite Porsches as well. It’s just the best all round Porsche ever.

    I have an 86 Carrera, so 915 gearbox but with a modded suspension. In the twisties, it can easily keep up with the turbos with a lot less drama... so much fun.

    You hit the nail on the head ‘exploiting the chassis at sensible speeds’ this is what NA 911 G body cars are all about. Forget the 0-60, forget keeping up with 300 Bhp hot hatches, just go out and drive it in your own little world of air cooled 911 coolness and fun.

    I am lucky to own both models. If you would asked me whether I prefer the Carrera or the Turbo, my answer would be - yes.

    Another lucky to own both, both 1986. The 3.2 came with fab speed heaters and exhaust. I can’t tell you how much better it sounds restored back to factory. I also own a 1997 993 c2 which obviously feels at least ten years younger, but nowhere near as fun to drive. The 993 feels more like a grand tourer than a sports car. If I ever have to sell, it’s the 993 that goes. The passenger seat in the 993 is honestly only suitable for people 6 feet and shorter. The 3.2 accommodates my 6’4’ son easily. My 930 has a k27, sc cams, updated intercooler and heaters, running 440hp on the back tires. I have yet to experience anyone not screaming at the top of their lungs when 2nd screams past 4000 rpm… Heaven. Please please, let me never have to let go of either my 86s…

    You should have compared both cars that had the G50 5 speed transmission. Shifting a Carrera with the G50 is a more pleasant experience than shifting the 915 transmission on the Turbo. I had both, yes the power of the Turbo is amazing but driving them in any type of traffic the G50 is superior. Also flooring the Turbo drops fuel consumption to 8 mpg vs the Carreras 25 mpg.

    The turbo hung on my wall throughout the 80-90's but the wide body N/A was my dream to own.

    Two very different cars for different purposes. Can’t compare the two besides to really understand the two would mean taking them across country. Turbo being a fast long distance comfy motorway machine versus the Carrera being a country side road weapon the will slice through the lanes for fun. That’s how I see both. 🙂

    The 930 turbo is the best i’m so in love with that car. A 1986 wls with Ruf tuning is my dream choice in meteor grey. I can confirm that the 930 is a mean car in terms of power and presence as well. People are absolutely respecting the car on the road.

  • @lhesprich4264

    Had both and still have my 88 930. The power of the 930 is addictive and I could never go back. You can’t help but smile when the turbo kicks in. In fairness, I have the standard bolt on mods and also have 400hp like the car in the video.

    Good reviews. I own an '87 G50 Targa and an '81 930. The G50 is a symphony and the 930 is heavy metal, each great in their own way.....Cheers!

    Thank you for excellent video. I own a first generation G50 1986 Carrera 3.2. Having also a 1992 964 Carrera 2 I agree the 3.2 is definitely classic Porsche and 964 the first modern one. I must however, admit that the absence of the steering wheel servo with the 3.2 is extensively limiting my sovereignty on curvy alpine roads.

    Lucky enough to have both ! An 84 3.2 and a 77 930! The 3.2 is a better drive but the 930 is wayyyyyyyy more exciting and much better looking! Picking one you'd still go 3.2! Parts availability for the old 930 makes me nervous ! Great review

    • @frankspatone
      @frankspatone 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just curious: which parts are you concerned about? I haven't seen any issues of scarcity yet. In any event, I still loooove the 930; one of my top 80's dream car next to the Countach and Testarossa. Only thing I would've wished for was a fifth gear. And I admittedly outright DETEST driving it in congestion or traffic (although others around me rather fancy it 😊). Once you hit the windy backroads though, it's ultimate bliss.

      i am refurbishing my 930 , no parts problem . fitted a kolken intercooler, kkk turbo .,..930 enough power even for today's standard, much of a fun sports car. 3.2 a tad too slow, a c300 might be quicker than it .

    • @frankspatone
      @frankspatone 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chucai Agreed! Curious to know: At what RPM does your boost kick in? Standard should around 4k, but mine starts up at just past 2.5k...been told that I've got an upgraded K27, but can't be sure - other than it goes like hell.

    • @chucai
      @chucai 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I dont know exactly when it actually start building boost , its around 3k plus minus , but around 4k + the boost was good . and yes i have the k27 got them together with my kolken intercooler and fabspeed manifold and full exhaust

    Lee yes these are 2 completely different cars, despite "looking" the same.
    After all my years in the car business I can say for sure, the 1989 930 is the best air cooled 911 PERIOD
    just because it has the G50 transmission.

    Peter Dron, the former editor of Fastlane magazine from the 1980’s always reckoned that whilst the 930 was a fantastic piece of automotive sculpture, the 3.2 Carrera was the nicer car to drive.

    Excellent and I mean excellent video. I was literally looking for a video comparing the two of these cars last week. I own a 1989 25th Anniversary 3.2 in Silver and was debating trading "up" for a turbo. Mine is pushing close to 300 hp. I think very much I'm going to hang on to it.

  • @3.2Carrera

    I'm running a '89 3.2 that I upgraded myself to 3.4 last year with cams, racing valve springs and shoring up the weak points like the rod bolts and head studs. It's much more stout then it was before and can hit 7000 rpm all day and not miss a beat. I love it. A 930 was always on my bucket list, but I think that ship has sailed now for me. But after doing my 3.2 engine I'm OK with it since the naturally aspirated engine really stretched my abilities.
