  • This week we get the keys to an absolute icon! The Porsche 911 930 Turbo! Or shall we call it the original widowmaker?!
This car has been supplied to us by @noshisgram so we would like to say a massive thanks for the opportunity.
This car was one of the last with the 4 speed gearbox until the G50 gearbox came along! The 930 turbo was in production for almost 15 years! Which nowadays that just wouldn’t happen but 911’s just do not age one bit do they?

I was a professional car photographer when the 930 was launched and I don't think that any other car I've shot has ever excited me as much . . . both visually and for the driving experience. While I never owned one, I did own a '76 Carrera 3.0 and a '78 SC Sport which were were my daily drivers for my work as well as pleasure and were as reliable as any cars I've owned. Great video! In my experience, the 930 got its "widowmaker" tag through being bought by well-off people for image but who never bothered to get familiar with driving characteristics unique to 911s . . . which you needed to do to get the best out of them back then.

Harry posted a follow up video with the car on the dyno - the consumption wasn't that bad, he was calculating KMs instead of miles due to to the speedo dial. Check it out...

      @@MrLg55555 absolutely.. 45 years changes a lot.
But the experience of getting into a 930 leaves you sweaty, exhausted, requiring new underwear and ready to put martini colours on the car for a Targa race.
Speed and ability of a modern car is superb, but the old stuff, while slower, is a hell of a drug.

I’ve owned mine for 10 years and it’s far from a Widowmaker. The 70’s and 80’s were chock full of image conscious buyers who cared more for how they look behind the wheel and less about how to actually handle that wheel. The boost rush is actually kind of disappointing if you watch too many TH-cam vids before getting behind the wheel.

Thanks to the *interesting* handling characteristics of this car, it's a car you buy to teach yourself *restraint* ... until you've expended much effort learning how to drive it properly. Upon expending that effort, you will learn lessons that serve well in other, less twitchy cars too.
Remember, this car does NOT suffer fools gladly, and it WILL bite hard if provoked. Above all, AVOID at all costs entering that dangerous transition zone from "meh" boost to "engage warp drive" in mid corner, as that puts you in pine box territory - in both directions. The change in handling characteristics is dramatic when you cross that line, and even skilled professional racing drivers have their work cut out taming that behaviour if it happens in the wrong place, let alone cack-handed amateur poseurs with more ego than brains.
Of course, recent incarnations of the 911 Turbo have benefited from 60 years of continuous engineering development and refinement to tame the handling of the car, including lessons learned from the 959 wonder car and its battery of computers controlling stability. The 930 Turbo is where it all started, with NO driver aids, and nothing but your skill and sensibility between you and acquisition of wings and a harp.
Consequently, anyone lucky enough to sample a 930 Turbo, pay STRONG attention to the above details. Best of all, spend money hiring a professional to teach you how to drive it properly, which will be some of the best money you've ever spent, once you've acquired the requisite skills. Don't thank me for this advice, thank yourself for taking it. :)
By the way, once you HAVE learned to drive the 930 Turbo properly, it's a serious thrill ride, and can cover ground at an astonishing rate. On a racetrack, it's wicked fun in skilled hands. Learn to handle it correctly, and your enjoyment will be positively erotic. :D

It’s not the power in that car that kills you. It’s off the power in a corner. It’s called weight transfer, trailing throttle oversteer. That’s what gets you.

    • @pjay3028
      @pjay3028 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, coupled with the rear wheel geometry of the semi trailing arms causing toe out during lift off..... ☠️
That's why they developed the Weisach axle for the 928.

Having been a professional car photographer back when both the 930 and 928 came out and spent a lot of time with them, I loved both but they were totally different cars offering totally different driving experiences. In my opinion, they were each as desirable as the other depending on your driving style . . . i.e. whether you wanted a sports car or a GT.

Choice of music you say from the 80s? Phill Collin’s I can feel it coming in the air tonight . Straight out of the Miami Vice soundtrack. What a work of engineering. Porsche did know what they were doing. Great looking coupe. My Porsche of choice from a younger age was the 944 Turbo. Oh to be young again. Great video thanks for sharing

Fantastic car and enjoyed the video, thanks Max & Noshi. One point i think you missed is the car's pendulum effect, due to the car's geography of weight, the physics dictate the back end wants to go 1st. So if somebody applied to much throttle mid corner, their nervous lift-off the pedal can cause the back end to spin out. So it was this effect that gave the car its 'widowmaker' status ☠
