Deku Is An AWFUL Main Character | My Hero Academia Analysis

  • I love My Hero Academia, but Izuku Midoriya, the main character, kind of falls flat for me. I don't think he's pushed enough in any human way (in ways other than fighting and physical strength) and I think he's kind of bland compared to other, more complex main characters. Here I break down his character and why I think it falls kind of flat, and how he might be fixed.

My biggest issue with deku is that despite wanting so desperately to be a hero, he did NOTHING to make that happen before the story. No training, no conditioning, no martial arts training, nothing. It makes it seem like, despite showing that he was willing to put his life on the line for it, he just didn't give a shit.

Deku's biggest flaw isnt even his personality, is how the universe bends around him and ruins what he should have been, instead of the underdog hes first introduced as, he gets god like powers from the best of the best , in the first season, then he only gets more overpowered as the show goes.
also, the side characters have more depth than deku, so thats a problem.

If you think that the superficials side characters of MHA have more depth than Deku, you have a reading comprehension problem. Deku is not a conventional MC of a shonen nekketsu, he has a not very common personality for this type of shows. It by far better than all the tropes of side characters in this show (MHA), but I understand that the corny anime fanbase underestimates this characters and said things like this. Deku is someone I really used to like but my main problem is that he confirms to a society that would normally expell him. Horikoshi is someone who can build up a massively flawed hero world but he didn't flesh out these plot points. Even though Deku has stated that all men aren't born equal he follows regulation that don't help everyone. His desire to become the Nr 1 hero is a responsibility that Deku would still need to comprehend. Ever since Deku received a quirk that made him lose his uniqueness. Deku also doesn't seems to be open to reforming his villains. The spinoff manga vigilantes is actually what Deku's story should have been.

When you brought up Midoriya's quirklessness, it reminded me of this fanfic called 'Deku? I think he's some pro'. It's part of the For Want of a Nail series. In it he doesn't receive One For All and actually goes on to become a hero without a quirk. I loved it because it seemed like the anime kinda brushes off his being quirkless after he received a quirk and the fanfic goes into detail about how hard it is to be quirkless in a society that practically revolves around quirks. The same series also has an entry where Izuku says fuck it and becomes a quirkless villain called 'Mastermind'. I actually find myself reading and enjoying these stories more than the anime in fact. And now I guess I understand why. Everyone was written well enough except for poor Izuku

Deku has a major savior complex and it’s pretty obvious. He needs to be the savior even when is obvious others can take care of themselves. @@assssaaasasass THIS. I always noticed how Dekus lack of self preservation due to low self esteem, combined with a savior complex, are ALWAYS rewarded. Horikoshi treats having your limbs literally twisted and crushed into a pulp like a papercut. He never follows through with the threat that, if Deku breaks his limbs a few more times, he doesnt get to keep them.
Every time Deku destroys his body, he wins the fight. Every tine hes where hes not supposed to be--stain, kamino, Gentle Criminal--it end up being a good thing where he wins the fight and no one else gets hurt, abd they "couldnt do it without him"
Not only that, but the adults in his life never take him to task for it. Nezu, aizawa, all might, and his mom never do more than say "nuuu stahp" a MILLION times. Theres no consequences, suspension, expulsion, therapy--nothing
And then when we get the setup of Deku having a quirk thats going to destroy him, a setup that, at sone point, is going to FORCE him to change or be forever disabled...and he gets 7 other powers that fix it all, AND that he masters in like two months.
Deku has great potetial. I guess Horikoshi didnt

  • @francjameso

I think Deku is a great character, but his beliefs are never challenged giving him a chance to display character or growth. Then Horikoshi is inconsistent when it comes to the consequences with his actions.
Him being good is not an issue. He’s very similar to Spider-Man and Captain America
I think Deku is interesting because his heroic attributes are a result of trauma and being bullied. He has NO self worth so in his eyes the most valuable thing about him is the quirk he was given, hence why he will always destroy himself to save others.

    • @TheYarheeguy
      @TheYarheeguy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Agree that he is similar to Captain America, though the difference is their struggle.
Steve Rogers (and I’m talking about MCU version) struggle with his environment, being in a different world than he's used to and having to move on only to discover that the people he worked with are either evil or want to do things that goes against being a hero, and he still keeps being a good person and still help people even if it means becoming a criminal.
Midoriya is like the video said, the struggle of his own powers, which is not a bad thing, but there isn’t really much to reflect on society or the hero system. The closest thing we gotten is his fight with Gentle and that’s it, and sure, he did gone rogue and became a vigilante, but that’s gotten reversed pretty quickly to the point where there is no point or reason for that to happen, just checking the mark of ‘protagonist goes on a depression arc before the third act’ on their Hero's journey.
I am not saying Midoriya isn’t a bad character, not good either, just poorly executed due to worldbuilding being thrown out the window.

      @francjameso 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@TheYarheeguy yeah I agree with that, and that was more or less my point. I hate takes like these because they're so ignorant. Like, yea fanfics can surpass the original story but that's props to the guys that made it. It's not why something is bad. They over 300,000 fanfics of mha, makes sense that some of them are written by some talented people.
Second, Upload schedules for fanfics just don't exist or are not nearly as harsh as Shounen jump ones. Fanfic authors sometimes post every other month or not at all for years. If we were forced into those hours, I doubt our work would be as good as Horikoshi's.
Third, and the biggest one. It's so easy to modify and change stuff as supposed to making your own. When starting out a fanfic you already have a rich, diverse set of characters that you don't have to build up for the audience to care about. If All Might was to die at the start of a fanfic, I would be upset but if that was the stat of MHA, I wouldn't give to shits.
See why OC's are usually notoriously bad in fanfics now?

Deku was liked for being the "underdog," and we all love to root for the underdogs, but now he's not the underdog anymore. Hes just a "dog" to the system. Even having gained Allmight's quirk I would have loved to see him use his "privilege" to improve the lives of other quirkless and inspire them. Its almost like he is becoming Allmight, the same Allmight who was once quirkless himself and told a previously quirkless Deku he could never be a hero without a quirk. Like the message from Deku's characterization is "you cant be a hero without power and if one power isnt enough then you can just use another." They make it seem like theyre promoting togetherness and teamwork, "no hero can do it alone," then constantly showcase Deku surpassing/bodying everyone and how he can "do ot all on his own," people who have years of experience learning their quirks. We only really notice the other characters now because theyre more interesting, not because they're getting any spotlight, nothing focused on them anyways. And sure some of class 1A has had their own arcs and family drama, but Deku was at the center of each one, yes he's the main character but if we're focusing on the Todoroki family struggles we dont really need Deku, if youre there to support your friend then support your friend not "steal the show." The manga does a better job at not completely focusing on him during some of them but its not much better than the anime. I was literally cheering for Deku during the sports festival and now... I'm not even interested, we all know "this is the story of how i become the #1 hero" so the ending is set. Its not even Satisfying when he masters a new Quirk... Cause its not a matter of "how" its a matter of "when." We watch the show and read the manga for the other characters, and we only care about Deku to see how close he is to his dream

(TL;DR at the bottom)He's in his first year of UA. What privilege does he have? He's not swaying crowds or anything, he's just a hero student.
Second, i don't know where people get this idea that the quirkless are discriminated against. You can assume sure but it's all headcannon. I say this because every time someone makes fun of Deku it's because he wants to be a hero. One like All Might especially. It's never stated it's like a disability that people make fun of but that Izuku with his quirklessness still wants to be a hero. We have no idea how the rest of the world views quirklessness.
Third, about the theme. Izuku wants to be a hero like All Might not just a "hero". All Might is right in saying Izuku cannot be the Symbol of Peace without a quirk because have you seen the power of a flick of One For All? All Might doesn't say "Quirkless can become heroes like me!" he says "You can become and here's my quirk to do so."
Is it a bit more bleak to say quirkless people can't be heroes like All Might? Yeah, but it's realistic. See my earlier statement of a flick of OFA. Horikoshi would either have to make it that Izuku somehow becomes the Symbol of Peace while quirkless or have him change his dream.
One is straight unrealistic and the other is way worse for your theme. Imagine Naruto is like I can't actually be a Hokage, I should be an advisor or something. Not motivating at all. I think it's better that we have something like "Use your chances to the best of your abilities" that MHA gives.
TL;DR. What privilege does he have? Second, Give me proof the quirkless are discriminated against and it's isn't jut because Izuku wants to be a hero. I'll wait. Third, Izuku cannot be the type of hero he wants to be without a quirk. Fourth, That's better than having the theme to be to change your dreams for something realistic.

As the series went on you’re right the mangaka did a horrible job with him, and I find most of the other side characters to be way more interesting/cool. Deku has little to no growth emotionally, he doesn’t have his values questioned, he doesn’t really face or grow from his failures. It’s one emotional speech + the power of friendship and he’s completely back to normal.
If you take a look at s1 Bakugo or Todoroki, they’re completely different by season 5/6 and have grown to be better people. Deku is literally the exact same as episode 1, no growth. In defense of Deku’s character: I believe his motivations does come from a human place, idealism or childhood fantasy, as children most us would see something on TV or in the real world and be like, I wanna be that when I grow, (most likely cause it looked cool)
Deku was denied and insulted for his dream for most of his life and then is suddenly given the chance to achieve it through all might. Problem is he learns that his dream job isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, he sees many of flaws within this hero society: selfish Heroes only caring about popularity and status, the failed trainees that slip through the cracks of the system, and most of all how society creates its own villains.
Through these experiences he gains a wider perspective on his dream of “being a hero to everyone.” He realizes that it’s not just the citizens and even other heroes that need saving but the villains too. Most of them people that got screwed over by society similar to him, it doesn’t excuse their actions by any means, but by learning the stories of the victims he can help make changes to society to slow of stop the creation of more monsters, that’s how he’ll surpass allmight, whose presence dissuaded monsters, Deku reforms them and stops them before they show up.
And briefly on the topic of class 1A, the series has been clear in showing that society can’t stand on the back of one pillar else the entire thing crumbles when that pillar is gone, thus the importance of other rising heroes that Deku has trained with and inspired.
Thanks for reading if bothered to.😂

Except whatever you said is either never expanded upon, more than maybe a chapter or is left too shallow.
You can argue his motivations come from childhood fantasy, but the issue is after seeing the good and the bad side of the hero society he never questions it. The most we know about his motivation is that he is inspired by that one video of allmight, we never get to know why that video is something that he holds in such a high regard other than he saved people...okay? And what made him think unconditional heroism is cool considering his ass was bullied. Hell kirishima has more well developed reason to believe in unconditional heroism than deku, bakugou's reason for loving allmight was fleshed out better than deku.
The problem is even after getting allmight's power and seeing the darker sides of hero society, his motivations are never questioned and his ideals are never once challanges
The story tries to sell the fact that hero society can't be supported by one piller, and then proceeds to have the entire freaking war arc centred around super deku and hyper shiggy. Sure there are fights going on here and there by its beyond freaking obvious that they simply don't matter in the grand scheme of things as whoever between deku and shiggy wins can and will single-handedly turn the tide of battle.

What deku experience is just because of his childhood like
      1. Mom not encouraging him to become hero
      2. Friends making fun of him being quirkless
      3. Bakugo bullying him in childhood
All he wanna do is to save people like the no.1 hero
But the society broke his heart like this
When he got chance to become hero he took it
And about why he didn't questioned about bad side is because whom will he tell this , to public. But how
Let's take an example: even if a politician want to ban alcohol he can't if his citizens don't want him to.
It's like this but I really love his saving people spirit and his character development.

Let me explain alot of main characters in anime or cartoons usually have they're flaws removed as time goes to make them more Jesussy, so anything controversial or anything that would make the fan base be disappointed him is removed.... It's why alot of MC's get so boring as time goes on they're not allowed to have flaws or go through interesting character arcs all in an attempt to make them the moral center of the story
It's why the rivals and supporting characters have the better characters arcs

These aren't just flaws that are just there either, he had these flaws becuase of his bullied past and discrimination against him, these flaws are even more apparent in the war arc. As even though his limbs are broken he's torn becuase he dosen't want to go back to the "useless deku" he was always called in the past. Same with the vigilante arc where he abandons everyone for their safety, not taking his own into account. Multiple charecters state how his mindset isn't healthy as well.

@@monkfruit You can make the same comparison to Boruto vs Deku as characters both characters are overpowered ,but Deku as a character is constantly repeating his character issues and unable to move on from them thanks to the rushed arcs In "My Hero Acdemia". While Boruto does change his attitude and perspective from what's happening between him and Kawaki. Boruto complained like a spoiled kid in the first chapter a lot in the beginning ,but now Boruto respects Naruto and loves him for being the Hokage. Boruto now has something to fight for and wants to protect. Boruto now wants to save both Kawaki and Naruto now despite the whole ninja world is against him. Deku being a vigilante now has not changed his character Deku may want to fight to understand villains but he will not change his opinion on him self. changing a characters personal perspective is "which is what character development is about" he still is just making stronger punches while fighting against his enemies what's even worse that Deku being a vigilante has not changed the hero organization's perspective of him they still consider Deku an ally which means Deku being a vigilante is a stupid cop-out to make him seem like Deku's taking a cool risk factor but in reality he's not taking any risks at all story wise.

Witnessing a growth in power isn't as compelling as watching an MC grow in character and Deku doesn't grow much in that aspect. This is what I've noticed: the more compelling MCs work on their character --> they unlock their potential --> and are rewarded with strength. Deku is the opposite. He grows in strength so unbelievably quickly (it's almost silly) to compensate for his character flaws rather than just work on those flaws in the first place which unlocks his potential. Instead, he gets what he wants with almost no repercussions and even when he loses a battle, he still gets what he wants in the end (so not even a proper loss). Abusing his body to get physically strong quickly seems all show and doesn't actually have meaningful long-term consequences. With that kind of abuse, he shouldn't be able to walk. This makes him an uninteresting and sometimes obnoxious character to a lot of people. I've never once thought of him as the underdog even though that's what the show keeps implying.@@reem6087

Deku's personality in season 1 is understandably weak and meek, it's somewhat annoying, but after that, he's kinda uninteresting as a person. Ironically, the "Anime Batman" was the original goal. Shonen Jump, the compony, basically said no. Which is how we get the "Chosen one" aspect as a second hand option.
Oddly, the lack of "human element" isn't really an issue to be honest. Some irl individuals are mentally lacking with particular drives which could very well have helped them, but doesn't cross their minds. I just find it nice to see a good one track mind character in a similar vein to Goku. Though as someone has pointed out, it could very well be the fact of idealism or childhood fantasy.
But again, all the issues that you can point to where it all started was with Shonen Jump. We could have had the Anime Batman, but didn't because they said that it wouldn't be as cool.
We could have had a decent story line where we learn about the world and see where things could have gone, have him use his mental ability to win fights instead of punch/kick to win.
But with how Shonen Jump forces the artist to basically suffer under the wight of deadlines, it's hard for Horikoshi to actually put enough effort without making things feel like there hand-me-down's. And that's where I think we will need to focus more on.

All the students we see do have heroic attributes but most if not all have other motives, such as ochaco doing it for the money and shoto doing it to prove his dad wrong (neither of which are bad or immoral but neither are truly heroic.) No. He chose Deku because Deku was lucky enough to have an encounter with him beforehand and Deku was there at the right time, just running out to try and save someone and being quirkless, shouldn't be the way to pick someone for the most powerful quirk ever?
For me it felt pretty unfair that Deku had only a summer of training, picked for the most powerful quirk under lucky circumstances, and surpassed all his classmates, some who had been training all their lives and some had as pure motives as Deku, some who eventually didn't at first but eventually would be JUST as worthy.
I just don't see the students in the class any less worthy than Deku. In my opinion the kid who could float through stuff, can't remember his name, was just as worthy as Deku, not saying he should have got it instead but I just did not buy how the anime was trying to tell me, only Deku was good enough and worthy for it.
In my opinion there were plenty of worthy candidates and Deku is not special, yes he was quirkless but it's not like Deku had any control over that, it even feels a little annoying that a allmight would use something at birth that Deku had no choice over, to pick him for the most powerful quick, like why should any kid who had a quick be disqualified in allmights opinion? Its not their fault, they were born with a weak or powerful quirk, and Allmight tried to frame it as "I gave something to Deku to let him step in the ring" with the other people with quirks, I'm like no, Allmight you gave Deku something that would help him become a world champion IN the ring, that eventually no one could surpass, thats VERY different!

Have deku show that he goes out his way to help the small nobody by doing simple task like painting their fences for them or something that adds more substance, or if he could try to talk the villains down from doing bad things first before trying to blow their heads off with his quirk first. A good writer would make a world & work to insure if their are as few plot holes as possible or if their are, they are either fixed or at least retconned so the story can still make sense and not break in on itself. Sure they had some of the steps in place but it just fell flat upon rereading the scene. He shows up does nothing then leaves the story like nothing happened next chapter. You'd think the writer would take more care and maybe save that moment for another arc or at least have mirio have a important role going foward, or atleast have something in between showing the progress was already very close and now a flashback just after he returns does not count its just lazy. Of course he just adds it in to generate hype then forgets about mirio ever existed after he got his powers back.

He could’ve gotten control over his quirk much sooner and we could see him control how much power he has, or see him get rid of the restraints. Maybe limited people know how strong he is so everyone seeing Shigi try to take this support hero would be cool and Bakugou taking on AFO would’ve had more weight. This video is not good. For many reasons, but the main one is your lack of understanding for Midoriya as a character, and his character archetype. I understand that you wantan incredibly complex character, but the complexity of Midoriya is something you have to actually think about to understand. Honestly, everything about his character could be easily summed up just by watching through season 1.
Throughout his entire life, he was told that he couldn't become a hero, that he wasn't special, and that he wouldn't be able to amount to much, bullied for being weak, and despite that he still tries to save people, we see this in the first episode of the anime, which is honestly something everyone in the comment section needs to rewatch. Midoriya has struggles, and character development.
Not every single MC needs to be Eren Jaeger, not every MC needs to have a paradox.
All Might didn't just fall from heaven and give him OFA, he reminded him of what it means to be a hero, which is why All Might saw him as worthy of One For All. We don't lose what's interesting about him afterwards, we lose the quirkless aspect of his character and are put into his next "arc", learning to hone the power of One For All properly, and not letting his idol down, and throughout season 1, we see and hear his thoughts on it. When he goes to the entrance exam, that's an obstacle that he overcomes, and it shows off his character even more, his strongest and most interesting aspect, his heart, his compassion is what makes him a good character.
In a world full of pro heroes that we learn can be selfish, only care about fame, power, or money, Midoriya is one who only wants to save people, to protect people, and though he had no time at all to gain points of his own during the exam, he chooses to save Uraraka rather than gain points to pass the exam. Willing to completely throw away his dream, just to save a life, of someone he doesn't even know as well, while the other students were focused on getting their points and getting into UA. Midoriya has a paradox, and it's shown throughout the entire series time and time again with villains like Stain, and pros like Endeavor. Midoriya wants to become a hero, a true hero, one that saves people, even villains but he lives in a society that doesn't truly care about that, in a society that is full of those who care about money, fame, and power. His paradox is tested time and time again, season after season, and his paradox, his ideals are clashed with the ideals of villains, other heroes, and even the other students at UA High.
Midoriya develops with the story, and the people around him develop thanks to Midoriya's most interesting part. That's what makes the arcs of the characters he interacts with interesting, that's what makes Midoriya an interesting character. Todoroki wouldn't have started his arc of becoming his own hero if it weren't for Midorya trying to save him. Bakugo would still have his ideals of "strength is all that matters" if it weren't for his interactions, and just seeing what Midoriya does through the whole series.
All Might's development is directly thanks to Midoriya as well. He isn't a bad MC, in terms of an MC archetype, he's a lot like Goku, in that he causes change in the characters around him. That's only going about season 1 and 2. Season 3 he changes Kota's mind about heros and hero society. Deku constantly develops as a hero, and with how he uses OFA, like Full Cowling, Shoot Style, Air Force, his use of mobility, using his notes about his friends and such to better improve his ability to make up for the things he lacks in.
Izuku Midoriya is a hero. That's his character, and his goal is driven by the most human aspect of his character, compassion. Why do you think people become doctors? Why do you think people become fire fighters and risk their lives daily? Why do you think people join the army? It's not always to get money, it's not always because it's cool, and it's not always because they want to fight. It's to protect people, to save lives, to be heroes to those they care about, to those of society, to everyday people like you, like me, like anyone in the world. He's pushed many times in more human ways than any other protagonist, and he's just 16 in the story, but despite that:
    Midoriya is a savior.

I can't believe this. Are we forgetting the severe training he had to go through to be worthy of OFA? Even with this, are we forgetting the risk he takes in every fight because his body still can't endure it? Are we forgetting how much he's learnt about heroism from his experience and partnership? Just because the show focuses on many other characters doesn't mean he's underdeveloped or has no stakes.

I think the idea of him wanting to save people with a smile is a side of him unconsciously trying to become All Might without him knowing that. We can see it in season 4. I'm not going to spoil anything, in case of someone didn't see that. But yeah, he might not have anything just like you said, but the reason of WHY he doesn't. It's because he had a friend from 4 years old as a bully who said to Izuku to kill himself so he can born into something more useful 10 years later, with the idea of his IDOL and MANY OTHERS told him that he can't to suddenly his idol told him that he CAN be a hero was like a point where he needs to prove All Might that he can do it which had shaped Izuku's personality into what you said. Yes exactly during the story he has always been one sided. It felt as though something was missing and you put it perfectly.
We never hear him mention anything about another quirkless person.
I'm the Stain arc he encounters Stain who mentions fake heroes in his society. But after that fight it isn't brought up any more at all. He doesn't get a chance to question the hero system itself.
Or simple giving someone the title of hero and villain. That line of thinking makes no sense in my opinion considering.

While I agree that batman deku would have been fun, he got the power in like the first 2 episodes. Its a minor annoyance built on preconceptions. There were a lot of ways that the story could have been more cohesive. For example, Deku attempts to train but hes denied because of lack of quirk. Or perhaps his bullies find out and torment him into giving up.. He tells his mom/teachers and they do nothing + the bullying gets worse. It explains his weakness and reluctance to do anything about his situation while tying in the quirk discrimination in a believable way. Hell, you could have had a scene where he overhears his dad leave specifically because of him being quirkless, adding to his issues. Then after he gets his powers society treats him better. His bullying could have led to an antisocial and distrustful attitude about him, leading to misunderstanding and drama with class A mistaking him for being a more polite Bakugo. Or he maintains his original attitude either through a mask or his improving situation. You could have had him witnessing a child being quirkless and either ignoring it and leading to self-loathing (even better if it happends around the eri arc) or getting involved, leading to different kinds of issues like for example one of his classmates trying to let the kid down gently and he just blows up at them, the situation hitting too close to home. Bonus points if theres a suicide of a quirkless kid leadong to the reveal that most quirkless are actuallu old people since quirkless kids rarely reach adulthood. Even more bonis points if this increase coincides with Allmights rise and his unintentional deification of power based heroism based on a superpower arms race. That could lead to a cobtrast between Allmights time and dekus, where batmanesque heroes existed but allmight made them irrelevent or something. All for one could further complicate things by having exquirkless minions with the quirks of their bullies, willing to die for him. I could go on.

Mha also got me into anime 5 years ago. But i dont understsnd why people say deku is one of the best mcs. People say he gets one of the best developments, but he just got a big power handed to him and the other ofa users had to babysit him. Also, deku's powerups arent exciting anymore. Hes basically the most op hero in the verse. He doesnt have any flaws. At least tanjiro wants to turn his sister back to normal. But deku has no real reason to be top 1 hero, like what you said.
This is why i liked the rogue hero arc because thats when deku started to realise that the world isnt perfect. He was by himself and he had so much potential for development. But then UA brought him back and hes back to the basic mc.

Like shouldn’t those classes be taken away and instead have different sets of classes that focus on more stuff that’s considered “heroic”. Being a "nice guy" doesn't mean you have no room to grow. The only things that limit that character type are the writer's closed mind and the audience's even more skeptical perception of the archetype. Nightwing (Dick Greyson) and the Flash (Wally West) are *the* nice guys incarnated in the Western superhero media, yet they're some of the most beloved. They're morally decent, funny, and dorky, yet at the same time they're put in difficult situations where they become paranoid and act out of characters, argue with each other or question themselves, only to reunite and be better heroes and friends later on. This is how you progress the 'nice guys' by subtly shifting the 'scale': you put the characters in different sorts of challenges and corruptions that they can only overcome by being true to themselves, becoming more mature, more compassionate as well as becoming better people and heroes than they were. Contrary to many people's beliefs, being a 'nice guy' in modern society is something you *earn, maintain* and *develop,* not something you have and be done with it.
Deku *does* have the definitive 'human' elements: he's an Otaku and a borderline hopeless hero worshipper. You can write countless dramas out of those qualities without sacrificing his decency: The fact that he can no longer treat superheroes like fun and cool pastime, the fact that the real world is grittier and more dangerous than what's shown on TV, the fact that his hero turns out not as great as he thought, the fact that people around him may get hurt or die because if his reckless actions, and the fact that everything he believes about being a superhero or the world is wrong, and that disappointment's what killing him from the inside. The only way Deku can become the #1 hero is to prove that he is virtuous no matter what kind of adversary he meets, not just bad guys that he fights, but also things that ideologically challenge his very core character. After all, personal virtues and ethics are the things that define a superhero, not what sort of quirk you have or how hard you can punch or kick bad guys.
All in all, it boils down to Horikoshi being a bad writer. He may be capable of creating a main character that resonates with people, but he does not understand the essence behind the superhero genre or how to develop a good protagonist. He also doesn't seem to be the guy who cares that much about superheroes despite writing about them. He would rather spend time building up bad guys or framing how bad society is without juxtaposing it with the heroic standpoints and counterarguments. The way Deku turned out in the ending after everything he's done is REALLY telling about his piss poor attitude toward the character.

You don't need a license to do hero work you do need it to get credit. Which to me is what it always seemed like Deku was about he was the glory of being like all might. He wants the public's affection that they never gave him. He wants to be a symbol a icon like all might. If he really wanted to be a hero he'd and to just help people he'd be like koichi. I enjoy the Alternate Universe fanfictions more than the series. I remember a very good one that, for some reason that I won't bother explaining, because you already know it, Deku commits suicide, only he was found by some villains who took him in and dehumanized him. The fanfic focused on the fact that no one knew who the new Deku was, and while everyone was investigating about it, they realized the weaknesses that existed in the school, in a poor classification system, attention, environment, and how everyone perceived them, even some villains end up feeling sympathy for the boy, who is now more of a walking sack of meat and has so many problems in his head that he can barely carry on a conversation without exploding or breaking down. He ended up becoming a kind of analogy and I loved him. Here's the kicker: I read this when I hadn't seen the series, and when I finally saw it (and read the manga) I was extremely disappointed that what I was seeing was simply a modern Dragon Ball, excellent for new members of the anime community , but I'm already past that time.

It's also extremely upsetting to see what he could've been. Not in the fan concepts or interpretations, but the actual beta concepts for his character; specifically Yamikumo (I think that's his name). I genuinely want to see a video talking about Yamikumo because he's so interesting. He's (from my interpretation at least) a quirkless child that learnt that being cruel is the only way to garner some dignity for himself. Looking at the real art of him, I get the vibe that he's either batshit crazy, or some manipulator that's willing to lie his way to the top. An arc of Yamikumo learning how to earn respect honestly, but also coming to grips with the fact that he's becoming exactly like the system that hurt him and then striving to change that for other quirkless people is so much more interesting than what we have now. I also think Shinso would make a good deuteragonist in a story with Yamikumo. Villain personality + villain quirk.

When they relaunched the DCEU on animated movie, when Green Lantern thinks Batman is some vampire/metahuman like him he is shocked to learn that Batman is just a guy in a cape wearing a bat costume.
This has always been peak character building of Batman since the 1930s because he is the normal man fighting against God Like threats alongside God Like colleagues.
Deku was supposed to be the first quirkless hero since in MHA universe there was no such category and it would have been awesome. There are so many characters who's abilities do not give them a physical boost yet they found ways to give themselves a leg up.
Nezu is the principal and he beats the students in his exam just by toppling some buildings like dominos. Night Eye trained his body like mad to supplement his quirk. He also learned martial arts and much more wielding 5kg paperweights and stamps as weapons with just his finger strength. Aizawa is pretty much fighting as a quirkless person especially if he is up against a mutant he has to take them down without so much as a knife.
The potential was there yes that there are already pro heroes who fight in a quirkless style in function but no we got a whiny nerd who does nothing and everything wrong. I can forgive all that!
Once he gets One For All he botches it up so badly.
He wrecks his arm for what? He doesn't even train himself properly to use it without breaking his bones. He has to go to Gran Torino to learn to use only 5 % but he never really has tech or anything to support him. Basically he is trying to be an All Might clone and is wrecking his body needlessly.

Yeah. I went to watch Boku no Hero after watching a certain magical Index. I found both worlds very similar, on one side a city made up of heroes with hero schools etc, on the other a city made up of Esper children who also go to school etc. But I realized that Boku no Hero sends the message that if you don't have powers, you are automatically weak and useless, while in Index they show that power is not the only thing that matters. 60% of Espers in Index were not lucky enough to awaken their powers, but this does not stop them from seeking their own strength through alternative sources: knowledge, artillery and military training, martial arts, street freestyle and even ultra-resistant robots and suits provided by the city where they live. And yet the struggles are determined by a combination of power, knowledge and strategy and not just power.

I agree. I also hated tanjiro for this very reason.
his character is one dimensional. deep hate for only the demon king, and would try to "talk" with demons even upper.
but when they attacked people infront of them they get mad. ignoring the fact they ate alot more people.
Tanjiro vs Daki, he actually was mad and asked if killing was ok for them, but that only happened after he saw people hurt.
and even then he let them reconcile. as if they didn't almost kill his best friends and a hashira with the entire village with it.
but the scene in the anime when his sister was burning gave tanjiro alot more humanity. he was choosing between his sister and killing an upper moon and saving THREE lives.
we all hear him contemplating whether to go and save them or find a way to save both, but we ALL saw the choice he already made.
whether it was intentional or unintentional, he chose his sister. being selfish for once, even if he's trying to save the others he never MOVED an inch from his sister.
meaning he already chose to save his sister than ending a man that killed thousands.

I can understand Tanjiro feeling sadness or sympathy for the demons after he's already ended them because his sister is a demon and therefore he views them as more human, but yeah, trying to talk things out with beings that have clearly eaten hundreds of people is pretty stupid. I wish the mangaka gave him more hard choices. Even the one you mentioned, which I also really liked, was just waved away by the plot 5 seconds later by upgrading Nezuko again. It's like the plot saw that he was about make a morally wrong decision and just said, "Oh, let me take care of that for you." I kinda wish that he was kicked out of the Corps after the Hashira found out about Nezuko and had to fight the demons and the demon slayers trying to kill his sister. That would've been interesting

7:58 No way you misunderstood the show’s theming THIS hard. The first episode of MHA goes OUT OF ITS WAY to explain that NOT everyone can be a hero, and the series’s world building continues to SUPPORT that idea.
We see it with Gentle, we see it with Shinso, and we see it with freaking Tomura Shigaraki. They are all people with heroic ideals that receive backlash simply because of society’s expectations on what a hero is. They had no control over these circumstances, yet were punished for them regardless.
The VERY FIRST LINE of this series is “Here’s the sad truth. Not all men are created equal.” How in the world do you extrapolate that anyone can be a hero from that?

I think you could have given Deku One for All at the start of the series. However, Izuku himself needs to be different. At the start of the series, he has given up on being a hero. He is more jaded because of his realistic approach to life.
I do this because it'll be easier for Izuku to change his viewpoints on villains and hero society as a whole. For example, during his encounter with Stain. I would have it a pure 1v1. This forces Izuku to fight such an overwhelming force on his own. However, his intelligence comes into play during the fight. He doesn't know how Stain's quirks fully function. However, he knows that he can't let Stain lick the blood off of the blade. It shows he is paying attention, on the fly thinker, and given enough time to grow. He would be a genius on the battlefield. Eventually, Stain asks Izuku why he is desperately trying to protect a person like Iida. Izuku replies that if he left now. He would be abandoning him to the fate that Izuku had been abandoned. Whenever he got beaten by other quirk users. He was left alone to lick his wounds. He doesn't want other people to feel what he has to experience.
This tells us that Izuku is here to save people, not just stop people.
Stain recognized this to be just like All Might's ideals but different enough. However, it's something Stain can get behind, and ultimately, this spares Deku a death sentence.
Izuku learns a lot from Stain, and as the story goes forward, Izuku's perceptions continue to change. Even to the point of realizing what La Brava and Gentle are to each other. The two saved the other. This forces an inner conflict within Izuku.
Does he let the two mere pranksters go so that they could continue saving the other from their own demons, or does he take them in and condemn them. As both will be separated.
Remember, he wants to save, not stop.
He could save them, but only if he let's them go. Yet, he would have to keep this a secret, and he isn't able to tell everyone why he missed the dance concert.
This forces Izuku to grow, and we can see more of the grays of society and how they would have an impact on Izuku as a whole.
That even with One For All, it's not easy being a hero.

One person that does the whole I want to be a hero thing, right is Shirou Emiya from why he wants to be a hero is because he wants to see happiness of helping others like he saw when Kirisugu save them from the fire of Fuuki and they are on cemented that ideal by promise to being a hero of justice as his adoptive father died he saves others to see himself. He’s utterly selfless because he’s selfish because he is the only survivor of the tragedy.huge survivors guilt. And places others before himself because of it I can’t stand when others protect him, or go in harms way for him he has more motive, more reasoning to become a hero or what it means to be a hero, then Deku that doesn’t even get started on the relation of power and theme of the entire story as it fits perfectly fate stay night is literally a story of Shirou emiya

His character arc is interesting because he has a good reason to want to save demons because they were once human. He also just wants to heal his sister which is refreshing to see in Shonen.

Most conflict is resolved by him at the end too, and sometimes it feels like they forced him into being the resolution to challenges faced by other characters that would be far more satisfying to see them solve on their own.
I think a great way to deal with "too perfect" savior type characters is to unironically kill them off. I think it would be incredible to matyr deku and have all these great side characters pick up the torch and deal with the darkness of their inspiring friend that both brought them together and that they relied on to fix everything is suddenly ripped from their lives. Maybe this could also strengthen the reliance certain characters have on one another and pull other ones apart

My biggest gripe with Deku and My Hero as a whole is that they did NOTHING with the whole "Quirkless" thing. What originally hooked me (even though it didn't last that long) was that Deku wasn't "special." He's our main character without a Super Power in a world where 4/5 of the population is born with them. The setup for his character to be "Anime Batman" was there, and that's where i thought his character was going. After being told to unalive himself by a peer he idolized, to being told he couldn't be a hero from his favorite person in the world besides his mom, it was a setup for a more broody character. Hence, Anime Batman. And then... they just piss all over that idea by saying "fuck it, let's make him the successor to Superman." Which would be fine... except that it proves Bakugo right. Deku wouldn't have been a hero if he hadn't lucked into it. Which isn't the message i necessarily... expected? I expected Deku to prove them wrong by signing up for UA and doing it "his" way. Maybe, like you suggested, he tries to go for support, but he does so well in the exam by using his wit and knowledge that he's put into 1A instead. We could've gotten an arc where, even though his classmates are nice to him, he still has to earn their respect because "he's quirkless" and him getting into UA "could've been a fluke", with the only one having any sort of belief in him being Ochako. This could've given even more weight to the "Deku v Bakugo" fight, and that fight could've been the first signs of respect from Bakugo, who underestimated this "quirkless loser", which also would've given more meaning to his apology later on.
But no. Instead of that, instead of all these interesting ideas, lets instead make the Bully character right. Deku couldnt be a hero without a quirk. And that just infuariates me. Deku may not have been "special" because he didnt have a quirk, but that ironically MADE him special. Talk about a wasted opporunity.

My problem with Deku is that he was initially presented as a smart person with great analyzing skills, but whenever he actually needs to use brains, he just didn't, it's always outpowered by the need to SAVE EVERYONE, to the point he's willing to sacrifice the person's safety so that he can show how heroic he is. Batman would beat Deku up for such recklessness. He's only smart when he needs to give exposition, explain how an action scene worked, but never to move the plot. Shit just happens to him and he doesn't use the world's movement to benefit.
Like, if he dreamt of becoming a hero, why didn't he do anything for it? No training, no learning how to make stuff, no studying of strategies or anything (fanboying doesn't count, weebs aren't exactly geniuses), hell, he doesn't even understand how a human body works, he keeps on breaking his own limbs despite what the nurse says and his go-to battle strategy is "punch hard". Bakugo came into UA already understanding his body, having special moves, an idea of a costume that would enhance his powers, great physique - you can't tell me he had all of it just because he was lucky to have a good quirk! That's determination and Deku doesn't have it!

So clearly there's a lot of people who think like you, 2k of likes, however I think that Deku does grow a lot during the series. First of all he got the powers of All Might (basically Superman) but he can't do shit with them without training his body.
Then when he managed to control some of it it was at the expense of getting injured, and when he managed to get that under control he started facing enemies way stronger than him with a fully unleashed Shigaraki and the return of All for One.
We see him go into a dark and lonely path on S6 second half in order to avoid putting others in danger, and he had a bad habit on getting himself on harm's way in order to achieve any goal without thinking of relying on others to share his burden, however he was proven wrong by his class mates.
So yeah, I get it that for some people the support characters or other main characters might be more interesting, but I don't consider him a failure of a character either, that's my opinion.

My biggest issue with Deku is the direction in which he is taken.
Deku is different than other children. Deku is constantly discriminated against, considered less by society, considered incapable.
    Sounds familiar?
It's because this could be taken as a strong symbolism for minorities in our own society.
I see myself in Izuku, because I'm neurodivergent, I live this struggle every day.
So I was expecting an overcome. I was expecting Midoriya to rise as a hero and show this society that, with or without a quirk, he is capable.
But no, what I got was a typical "chosen one" plot with Deku miraculously receiving his powers from the number one hero. C'mon!
It's seems like this story is telling me that Deku can only be a hero if he has a quirk. Doesn't that mean that my quirkless ass can simply not be one too?
See how problematic that message is? It's like it's telling us that we can't win unless we are different the who we are, and that's really fucked up.

I understand that deku follows anime tropes too much, but he is the only one that does (if you don't count tanjiro from demon slayer). I know that conflicting characters are interesting and complex, but it is because deku isn't like that that I love mha. It's a story that holds the tropes and uses them to their fullest potential, making an enjoyable, even if not complex, power fantasy that I, personally, find refreshing amongst the other anime like jujutsu kaisen and aot that try to get emotion from the viewer through their philosophical and gory scenes instead of the overanimated, goosebump-generating fights like mha does.

Umm deku is still young and he is improving as a person and a hero yall wanted batman but it would have been boring and cancelled also the dark hero arc was highlighting the flaws of deku and its conclusion was that he is not perfect he can't save everyone he needs to rely on others but yall throw that out the window and say the story about a underdog when its really about becoming a great hero for the people to be the symbol of peace to overcome ones weaknesses and go beyond to understand the pain of others so that nobody else has to experience it and being responsible for keeping the people safe but yall think this is a normal shonen when it never really was

Him being basic is why he is a good mc because that makes him relatable the people who get bullied (for stupid stuff like race, sex, and religion and more) yes I agree he should have stayed quirkless to prove them wrong I agree but it is related in how life sucks then one random thing changes everything and I will say deku is not really the main character class 1A kinda is.I am so sorry but deku is realistic he did not really thing he could be a hero so I am pretty sure that is he did not really train but you are the ten months of hell he went through to train. And deku have faced the harsh reality of the world he was heavily bullied for a decade.i respect your case and you have great points but you over looked some major points thanks for reading if you do

I see your point, but hear me out.
    1. Dekus 'Y' factor is his responsibility. thru out the show Deku learns to be more responsible with his power and tries to live up to the expectation set on him by everyone around him (for example, previous users of OFA). It's something we can relate to.
    2. Sure Deku might have a simple mindset, but he always gets put in a interesting situation because of this mindset. Since you are a manga reader you probably get it.
    3. His personality after s1 is much more enjoyable than other mc like Tanjiro and sometimes Asta.

    • @spotlessdancer8046

@@monkfruit There are nuances to Deku that make him appear as a bland, basic shounen mc on the surface, but like Gon from HxH, he has a "dark" side. He has aspired to be a hero his entire life, and he went closer to this goal than most aspirational heroes who already have a quirk, let alone those who don't. Upon receiving OFA, we see these characteristics amplified because he now has a way to achieve his goal. We see how madly devoted he is to becoming a hero to the point that it could be classified as toxic. He repeatedly puts his body through hell despite knowing it could kill him. Even after achieving a decent level of "competency," as you outlined, after learning full cowling, he keeps pushing himself to an unhealthy degree whenever the situation arises. He feels a sense of responsibility for everyone around him and utterly disregards his own life. This is what separates him from other shounen MCs.
Other MCs indeed have this quality, too, but they don't have it to the degree Deku does. For example, Naruto, in his story, is in a similar place as Deku, having a power that can put him on the top tier of his universe's fighters, yet even he knows when to let others help him. He allows himself to be assisted by the friends he has made throughout his life. Tanjiro is another MC that consistently pushes through his limits in life-or-death scenarios and frequently gets massively injured. However, he is still aware of his limits and only pushes himself to this extent when there is no other choice (i.e., nobody else can assist him). When someone, like a Hashira, or a group of people, like Zenitsu and Inosuke, can lead/support him, he accepts their help.
Deku does not have this characteristic. He tends to ignore the pleas of those around him who want to help. This was heightened upon first hearing about the history of OFA and AFO after the Sports Festival arc. This was further exacerbated once All Might lost his powers after his last fight with AFO. After this moment, he fully embraces the idea that he will have to take on everyone's burdens and support everyone without being supported. After a fight with Muscular and his arms busted as usual, he informs the pro heroes at the scene about the villains' plan potentially involving Bakugo. He was explicitly instructed to go hide with the other students, but he ignores this advice even though his arms are flailing around behind him as he runs to go save Bakugo. Another example is when he is fighting against Shigaraki in season 6 and chooses to use 100% and breaks his arms even though that wasn't completely necessary in the situation. He understood in this situation that he wouldn't be able to use his arms anymore if he used 100% repeatedly like this and that he was crucial to this fight, but he willingly ignored all of this.
I dub this condition "the Burden of Competency." The understanding that he has the potential to be the strongest hero and overdoing it. Deku knows that if he keeps improving his body to handle OFA, he will eventually be able to harness all of its power and that even with a steady improvement, he is at a pretty good place in terms of his proficiency with OFA, but it isn't enough for him. No amount of power will ever be enough for him because his standards for himself, based on his view of All Might, are impossible to reach even with OFA. Even All Might didn't live up to those standards. Even if he could use OFA and all the quirks included at 100%, I feel it wouldn't be enough for him. He would still push himself to an unhealthy degree. He's chasing an ideal that doesn't exist and is potentially impossible even for him.

I love ururaka and she gets hard sidelined for the sake of love plot with her, which is also just as neglected.
Literally every single side character is more interesting than the main protagonist.
Even the guy whos quirk is a tail, hes weak, he knows it, but thats a flaw and id rather see him try and improve rather than deku.

That was a delusion he had crushed by the reality of Kiyomisa and his gang kicking the stuffing out of him and his and making them their lackeys. That was the whole point of that dream. It was never a long-term goal the story built around like Naruto's wanting to be Hokage.

When held up against the definition of a "good" protagonist, Deku certainly stands up to it. Some viewers might think he's too optimistic or too reckless, but that doesn't make him a bad character. In fact, he's more realistic in this sense because real people aren't perfect. This is something that Horikoshi, the author of the manga, continually reminds the viewers about.

He is not a good protagonist because he is boring, it's really simple.
The point of a manga is to entertain and make people feel emotions and the protagonist should be a character that allows you to feel those emotions.
Deku (and the whole manga to be fair) wasn't able to make me feel anything in the whole series. How is it possible that while everyone around him gets to mature or be somewhat interesting (All Might and maybe Bakugo) he stays the same the whole story except for a few days (in the vigilante arc and for stupid reasons)?

    The Story of Anti-Villain Deku:
After being bullied by Kacchan, saving him, getting yelled by Pro Heroes, All Might turned his hopes down and Society criticized him, he's not going to let that corrupt him. He knows that there's another way to become a hero. After he saw and heard a quirkless, former, Pro Hero's speech about how he's a skilled fighter on the internet, Deku started to train like hell. After that, he decided to be a vigilante and did a great job at saving people and defeating villains. Some Pro Heroes are jealous that Deku, a quirkless vigilante is doing a better job than them, so they decided to brutally humiliate him to Society who actually enjoyed it. After that, AFO "saved" him. Anti-Villain Deku's new goal is to kill the ones who deserves it and change the world's ugliness.

I actually disagree on almost all the points you listed . First I’ll state something I think deku does different that is now I trope instself that crying MC trope is something different that I actually like that deku brought to the table idc if people mostly guys I’ve seen think it’s annoying . And honestly I really say that comes from a place of how society says men should show emotions and crying especially so openly and often is one emotion guys boy men are taught to basically never show . Even more so in a main character deku despite having a heroic heart and will to want to do good is a scared crybaby when he didn’t have his quirk. And he wants the chosen one the literal first two episode of the show went through great efforts to show that he wants some chosen one I think people have lost meaning in what that is. Everything that happened to him happened by chance he wasn’t even all mights first pick to give the power million was forgive me if I butchered his name. Not only that him changing his fighting style to shoot style was also something that was touched on that I though was great and that as his idolization of Allmight he idolized him so much so that he imitated his fighting style instead of trying to make all for one his own well that touched on this when he developed full cowling as well which I preferred to shoot. But same thing they kept touching on that and it makes a very good point. It’s like what would we do if we got spider man’s powers we would like try to stop villians and use his powers in a similar way to him but in the end we aren’t him we would need to develop it in a way that suits us. We might be better a webslining then the original or have web wings to glide so maybe we need to focus more in combat stuff like that . Then there are other things as well but I’ve Ben taking for timing I think he s great MC.
