"The S on that chest stands for hope."
Ironically Superman's powers are arguably the least important thing about him.
The incorruptable kind, hopeful, and forgiving person who always does what is right is what makes superman unique.
The thing I enjoy most is that Superman is a character that spits in the face of cynicism infesting everything in moderm media. A proud idealist seeing the best in things

    • @longc35
      @longc35 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +112

Absolutely, and when you do bring up his powers in the context of all of his other traits what you get is a very clear cut subversion of the power corrupts trope. Clark Kent has had these powers basically for as long as he can remember and what does he choose to do? He doesn’t try to rule the world or go on a crime spree, instead he just tries to help people. Every time I see an “Evil Superman” I just think “Guess their playing the power corrupts trope straight this time, I certainly hope the rest of the show is good or at least has something else going on.” Although at this point I tend to just drop the second half of that thought and then watch something else.

One thing I think you could've touched on when showing that Goku is NOT a symbol of hope in his universe is the spirit bomb used against Buu. Goku needs to use the spirit bomb to defeat Buu, and for that he needs the energy of every human on Earth. But they don't know who the heck Goku is, so they don't trust him with their energy. But then HERCULE(Or Mr. Satan) asks, and he IS their symbol of hope, so they gladly share their energy for him.

    • @LukewarmTakesYT

This was one of the biggest oversights that I missed when I wrote the video. You’re absolutely correct. The world knows and loves Superman/All Might, but even though Goku saved the planet, he isn’t their symbol because no one knows him (not that he wants the fame anyways).

@@itsthugga1fazesilky The spirit bomb seeks out evil intent, and requires a certain mindset to control, similar to UI. In SSJ, goku is by no means capable of focusing on said mindset. He becomes too overcome with rage to conjure a spirit bomb, since as is stated, SSJ is a form brought on by a feeling of pure rage.
Your point still stands, I just feel it's important to understand why he can't

    • @TheJjcczz
      @TheJjcczz 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

@@justarandomgamer7667You’re mostly correct, SSJ can be unlocked in several ways, rage is just the main and easiest. Children of Saiyans who’ve already unlocked SSJ prior to conception can unlock the form through regular training or other strong emotions, prodigies can unlock it through a more technical explanation
Gathering energy for the spirit bomb requires you to be calm and aware of all the life around you. Originally Goku obtained Super Saiyan through the rage he felt over watching Krillin’s death and used those same emotions when training to go SSJ at will. Because of that rage is forever tied to the SSJ transformation for him and he can’t enter the necessary mental state to gather energy
Since he’s the only Saiyan that knows the Spirit Bomb there’s no one to compare him to. Caulifla and Goten are the only ones to unlock SSJ without using strong emotions so they might be able to gather energy while SSJ, but given their personalities it’s unlikely they could reach the necessary mental state without a lot of meditation training

I was worried that the twist with All Might was going to be “he’s actually an asshole.” I think it’s ingenious that All Might is “what if Superman was ashamed of Clark Kent.”
All Might clearly takes great lengths to ensure he maintains the typical Superman persona. He never shows himself in his true form. In reality he’s standoffish, reserved and awkward. He’s the symbol of peace and if anyone were to figure out who he really was, that symbol would be damaged.

Having Goku realise he had selfishly put the Earth in constant peril and deciding to stay dead was one of the best ideas Toriyama ever had, and he immediately ruined it. And what’s worse, he ruined it by proving Goku to have made the right decision in the first place. The whole Buu saga happens because of Goku coming back to Earth to once again selfishly fight. Without that, Vegeta would have killed Babidi and his henchman and Buu would not have been revived.

I don't think Goku exemplifies enough of any real theme to boil him down. He loves to fight. He cares about others. He balances the two priorities "pretty well" but has his mistakes.
The decision to stay dead is absurd. Nothing about the threats to earth are ever conveyed as some kind of destiny based on Goku's presence, just logical consequences. The saiyans and Frieza come after him because they knew about him and had unfinished business. Dr. Gero and his creations were unfinished business. Babidi and Buu have no relation whatsoever to Goku. If there existed some increased likelihood of threat based on a desire to pursue Goku, there's no reason to believe finding out he's dead would necessarily spare earth or Gohan the trouble of defending it. Based on Goku's motivations he should have wanted to stay alive, continue to raise his family, and train the natural way as a living being. In the end Toriyama just wanted to move forward with Gohan but he didn't even the fortitude to stick with it.

The Saiyan desire for battle was something that only came about in DBZ when Toriyama changed Goku’s origins. In the original series Goku was more of a traditional martial artist who sought to get stronger through training, he never went around looking for fights and would often ask people nicely to stop first before engaging them in a fight. DBZ changed the dynamic by having Goku arrive after the fight had already started meaning there was no attempt to talk things out and pitted him against opponents who couldn’t be reformed

The evil superman thing comes because, being fair, his powerset is IDEAL for a villain. He is unsurpased on power, so the good guys can be the underdogs against Evil superman. And, if I'm honest, I do enjoy it. IT is fun, and certainly more interesting than Superman just punching people.
That said, my favorite superman stories are those that focus on his humanity, not on how powerful he is.

Well that and the fact that Power Scalers seem to ignore if you specify a very specific version of Superman. Like "Can Milkman Superman beat Goku?" The discussion starts as such...before devolving into other versions of Superman, like Injustice and Superman Prime 1 Million, and so on and so forth and it stops being engaging. But soon as you decide "Okay screw Manga Goku, I'm gonna bring up Xeno Goku" those same Power Scalers will be on your ass like "No no no! You were talking about Manga Goku! Superman isn't done wrong by definition. It heavily depends on the writer. But he himself is one of the greatest super heroes out there because of who he is not what he is capable of. Every single writer that did superman first as a super that happens to be a man (in the sense of human) has done it incorrectly, it is also why most of the runs where he is depicted like that failed. Superman is first of all a man, he only happens to have super human capabilities. What is special about him isn't how he is able to lift 1 quintillion tons with one hand or how he is almost as fast as The Flash the embodiment of speed itself, no. What makes him special is his moral strength, his kindness, his willingness to see the best in everyone around him even if they're super villains. The greatest takes on Superman are exactly the ones showing that off, showing that he's seen what humankind is capable of, both good and bad and yet he believes we can be better. Heroes like Superman, Captain America, All Might (all might may be debatable) serve to show what the unreachable good would look like, they're not made to be relatable characters, they're made to be the Paragon of what we SHOULD be, completely aware that we can't be perfect but it isn't a beautiful idea because we can reach it, it is a beautiful idea because it means we can always be better, there is always room for improvement and if we really try to be a bit like them every day then maybe through our actions we can make the world a bit better.

I grew up on Superman in the 80s, and I loved him as a kid. But when I found MHA a couple years ago, All Might became my favorite, hands-down. While AM and Superman do share the qualities discussed in this video, I find the former to be vastly more entertaining and dynamic. First, AM has a light comedic side to him that isn’t overplayed, but is used just enough to enhance his personality. He also has personal shortcomings, like struggling to translate his prowess into teaching moments. He is not invincible; he carries a grotesque scar from a fight with his nemesis, and we see him injured and bleeding in some of the more memorable fights. He doesn’t pull punches; it’s hard to think he wasn’t trying to end All For One’s life when you see what he did to his face. We see that he is more than happy to merely incapacitate and capture villains when he is able, but against major threats, he is willing to do what it takes to maintain peace. While he too has moments when he needs to hold back for the sake of those around him, that’s not the crux of his angst. He isn’t worried about hurting villains-his focus is on who he is protecting and what he has to do to ensure their safety. His smile is to put people at ease and give them hope, but we know there are many times when it is a conscious effort and even a struggle for him to keep smiling; he isn’t just grinning because life is good when you’re the world’s greatest hero. -And it makes it all the more impactful when he stops smiling.
While this video does a great job of separating Clark’s character from the spectacle, and showing his parallels with AM, I admit I interpreted the title differently. I think Lukewarm is saying that AM is the right anime adaptation/equivalence of Superman, but I read the title as saying that All Might is a vast improvement. Superman is the bare bones of hope and inspiration, having very little personality and suffering from a constant increase in his powers/capabilities that bring him to an almost god-like level of existence. Clark is about as interesting as a Kansas wheat field. His writers seem to take him very seriously, and that means Clark takes himself seriously as well. He is, in fact, very alien, showing very little in the way of being human. His simplicity was perfect for me as a kid, but as a teen, the only time I found him interesting was in his fatal encounter with Doomsday. It wasn’t because he died, but because it was the first time I saw him showing real courage, perseverance, and sacrifice. So many stories and iterations of him either had him nigh-invulnerable in his normal state, or completely useless in the presence of kryptonite. His fight with Doomsday was the first time I saw him bleed, the first time I saw him show fear and desperation-in short, the first time I found him relatable.
Superman’s role as an aspirational hero comes at the price of his relatability. Compassion and restraint come easy when you are invincible. Whereas AM has witnessed the murder of a beloved mentor and lives as a diminishing shell of his former self due to a severe injury, Clark has largely been protected from personal loss. (I know he is an orphan from his planet, but I think losing people he never really met to a global natural disaster is different from having someone he knows and deeply cares for murdered. That, and he has lived in a world where the main villain has been able to kill, harm, and destroy for years, whereas Superman is able to immediately address threats-mostly before there’s any lasting or significant collateral damage.) More recent iterations of Superman have explored what he would become if he lost someone close to him, like Lois, and the result is rather abysmal. It can be argued whether the ‘what if’s’ are accurate, but I think it’s fair to say it would alter his outlook in a significant way.
All Might manages to be inspirational and aspirational while still coming across as very flawed and very human, adapting to new roles during the story. He is humble, and willing to humble himself further when needed. He doesn’t always know the right thing to say and questions some of his decisions. While many of the other wielders of OFA have simply passed it on to the next successor, AM takes the time and effort to become a mentor, and heavily invest in his successor’s life. (Granted, most of the previous OFA users had their lives cut short and didn’t necessarily choose not to be mentors.) He fails. Many times. He has a variety of involved relationships (Gran Torino, Nighteye, Nana, and Deku to name a few-as well as many of the other students and faculty) that flesh out his character further. AM was the symbol of peace, but the writing made him much more than a symbol, giving him far more range. Whereas many people have recoiled at the Snyder version of Superman, saying it’s too far removed from who Superman really is, AM is the equivalent of both versions of Superman; he has the altruism, compassion and inspirational qualities of comic/OG Superman, while also having moments of grief, angst, self-doubt, and a willingness to kill from the films.
It’s been a long time since I’ve checked in on what Clark is doing. From the few comics I read, to the 90s animation, to the Dean Cain TV show, and even the JL/JLU series, there wasn’t a whole lot of change. Lois-and, to a lesser degree, Jimmy and Perry-were the only significant relationships he had. His involvement in other people’s lives was minimal. He was a symbol and embodiment of many virtues, and he had the depth you would expect from a symbol. He was more like a celebrity than a “normal” person, and he often operated within a very simplistic, black-and-white morality. His powers have grown whenever the plot needed them to, but his role has never changed or been expanded in any significant way.
I came across MHA during a time when superheroes were becoming darker and more macabre. The anti-hero was becoming a grotesque version of itself, celebrating and indulging in the “anti” and showing very little in the way of “hero”. If a character seemed too good to be true, it meant he was either little better than a villain, or was going to become some perversion of virtue. I had become bored and disinterested in classic heroes like Spider-Man and Superman who valued their conscience and stilted morality more than the lives of others. I wearied of the retcons, multiverse shenanigans, and perpetual power creeping that happened whenever lazy writing required it. In short, I was done with the superhero genre as a whole, enjoying a few of the earlier Marvel films that featured a bit more realism, vulnerability and humanity.
All Might was a breath of fresh air, and his initial arc in MHA (through his rematch with AFO) is far and away my favorite portrayal of a hero in modern media.

Superman’s humanity and empathy are the best part of his character. The kindness and hope he embodies are his greatest impact. It’s why “evil superman” is never very interesting as a character. Bc it’s just another nearly-omnipotent villain. And there are already countless of those. Whereas someone with that power who is GOOD and uses it carefully and always sticks to their values is incredibly rare.
I disagree that inspiration is key to who superman is. Hope is, but not so much inspiration. He continues being and doing good even when no one is there to see it, and even when people doubt or hate him.

That's the only interesting thing about Superman in my opinion. He is both Superman and Clark Kent. Superman is his nature; the protector, defender, and champion. His strength and will power are ingrained in his DNA. Clark Kent is his nature; the mild mannered farm boy turned big city reporter who just wants to do good and get a date with the cute girl at work. He was raised to be kind, to stand up for those in need, be honest, just, and try to be peaceful.

And All Might is a good reflection of Superman's habit of taking everything on himself. But in his case it just leads to major burnout and..... something of a weakening for other heroes because they depended on him for so long.

Of course, I'm also not saying All Might is a 1:1 recreation of Superman, but he captures what Superman is all about, strength, virtue, hope, etc. All Might's role as the "strongest" but also the apex of the superhero society both morally and physically makes him feel very Superman-esque.

It was about how Superman deals with family troubles like his kids going through the teenage period and Lois being sick. It made him relatable. "The person who would win in a fight is the person *_the script writer wants to win!!!_* If I want to have a story about the Thing from Fantastic Four, and he gets into a _big_ fight with Spiderman, and millions of people out there say 'Who would win?' Well it depends on who I _want_ to win if I'm writing the script. If I want Spiderman to win, he'll win. If I want the Thing to win, he'll win. *These are fictitious characters, the writer can do whatever he wants with them! So stop asking those **_bonehead_** questions!!!"*
Ever since I heard it I stopped comparing characters based on strength and more by their actual, you know, _character._ I quickly warmed up to Superman after that despite kind of being tricked into hating him as a teenager by stuff like Death Battle and the like. Powers aside, he's just a good kid from a small town trying to do what he thinks is right.

Alright I personally believe there are some points of Goku you got wrong. My main issue is that you bring up Goku putting others at risk for the sake of a good fight which simply isn't true, especially in the case of the Cell Saga panels you put up as a visual. In that fight, the planet was already in danger and Goku had the best grasp on Gohan's strength out of anyone there. He needed Gohan to push through the final barrier and realize his (at the time) full potential in order for the planet to be saved. Meanwhile he outright states after his fight with Cell that he was going *all out* while Cell barely even looked winded and was most likely holding back for the sake of the fight. Most points before this scene Goku has, to the best of his ability, brought fights away from populated or generally lived (by most living creatures, not just people) areas, and really only fought in a population center when the enemy doesn't care and isn't going to leave on top of Goku himself not having the power to MAKE them leave.
And don't even bring up the who ToP incident. People still say that Goku put the universes in danger for the sake of a fight but that like of thinking has more to do with Super's being rushed, Toei's inability to create a completely cohesive story, and the near complete mischaracterization of Goku himself the anime had. Even the manga has issues, but to much less of an extent as the anime.
