Funny how “opportunity” usually involves some level of getting the short end of the stick.

I was the "acting" manager for 13 MONTHS before I was finally given the title and pay. Run, Veronika, run.

My old "team lead" (actually just a senior) was just acting team lead for about a year and a half. During that time, work just got insane (not her fault) so a good chunk of the team left. She was not given the promotion since she was only leading 2 people at that point instead of 9.

One of the reasons we love movies is because the characters in them do and says things most of us don't have the nerve to say in real life.
That's why Veronica is our hero.
But in reality, in this "at will" state of mine, Michigan, Veronica would be home typing out applications for a new job.
That aside, the best thing about these videos is how the creator perfectly captures the passive/aggressive and annoying speech patterns of management and HR. It's so great! 😂

Sad to say, but this sort of crap goes on quite often. I've been in the position of gradually taking on managerial responsibilies only to find out that my current job's work scope had been "expanded" to include being a de-facto department manager. After I moved on they were suddenly recruiting for two positions; one with my original job duties, and one department manager. Apparently, finding someone else able to do both at the same time was proving to be impossible. The reason I had moved on was because my new boss stated that, despite me doing two jobs, there was absolutely no way I was even getting a raise that year. Also, the fact that I even HAD a new boss was never mentioned to me until that moment.

In my 20's I EAGERLY took on "unpaid promotion" opportunities. In my 30's I finally started seeing these for what they were, and limited taking unpaid added responsibilities to things that gave me legitimate experience needed to buff up my resume. In my 40's I got high enough in the food chain to be expected to sell this scam to my subordinates, but not high enough to erase the guilt from doing so, so I made sure those eligible for promotion got PAID accordingly.
Young'uns: know your worth and don't settle - especially in an economy where the CEO-to-entry level pay ratio is well over 100 to 1.

Management did this to a friend of mine. Made her manager for 18 months, no increased in pay, and told her she needed to get a Master's degree. She went along with this. When the position "officially" opened up, they hired an outsider instead.

I knew a distant buddy of mine, who was "acting principal" of a school for several years but never got the according promotion or payment for it. When the school was united with a neighboring school, his position was closed. All he got was a hand shake and "well done" from his superiors. THANK YOU GOVERNMENT!

I retired from a large city radio shop after 22 years, at one time a manager retired and wrote the job description so I was a perfect fit. they let me do the manager job for 6 months then brought in a alcoholic bum to give the job to. I did not trust them and made my fortune in stock market. they could not cheat me out of that. if you do a good job you will NEVER get a promotion.

Never step up to a temporary role without first confirming that there is financial compensation of some sort. Aside from the fact that they are using you, others will not take you seriously or respect your position without you gaining your stripes. In fact, never move UP to a temporary role - sideways, maybe but not up. Once they take your position away, they will expect you to train the new hire that eventually takes the position. Also, those who you may have upset when you had the temp role will pay you back - comebacks you cannot shield yourself from because you no longer have your rank.

This literally happened to me in 2020. When I respectfully declined the unpaid promotion, a few weeks later, my position was eliminated due to restructuring & reorganization as a result of an economic downturn brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. I was waaaay more respectful & diplomatic than Veronica in spite of my previous employer playing in my face for 13.5 years. Still, they gave me the boot 👢plus their ass to kiss.

I've NEVER seen these temp. unpaid "roles" do anything but frustrate the people who take them. NEVER seen a permanent position come out of it. The fact is the responsibility moves UPWARD to the next HIGHER position until the job is filled, as that person is getting paid for that level of responsibility. Asking someone lower to take that responsibility should Negatively reflect on the supervisor ABOVE the missing position.

I had a similar interaction where I was leading a team successfully and a sister team wasn't performing. Management asked me to lead both teams. Did it involve a raise? No. Would I have a change in title? No. Would I have the ability to take people on or off the team? No. Would I now be responsible for their poor performance? Yes. I was like, "So...instead of properly managing that team to success, your plan is to make me responsible for it and blame me for their failure. Do I have that about right?"
    The ask was rescinded.
