This actually happened to me. I work in the environmental field and have multiple certifications that are wide apart from the normal, and I speak 2 languages.
From the job description, I knew it would be tough for the company to fill the role, but I fit the job description perfectly and had all the certifications, education, and experience.
The interview went swimmingly; at the end, the two interviewers were my new BFFs!
Then we talked about pay. They asked what I expected. I said boldly $6X... They looked around and said well, this position pays $4x.
I reminded them that the skill set they are asking for is normally not filled by a single person but normally a team in our field. So they could hire me that fits the bill, or hire 3-4 people that have each Cert. and/or experience at 2-4 times the cost. I then left the interview.
I got a call before I even got home. We then negotiated about a company car (because I cover a big area) and cell/laptop. In the end, I got everything I wanted.

Let's be honest and face the fact that corporations are amoral and profit is their only real concern, not their employees, so the employees need to know how to watch out for themselves. Oh, and here's another thing I'd like to ask for honesty on... if the candidate in the sketch were male, would you be having this same reaction? Because my husband has been negotiating his salary upwards for 20 years as his experience and skills have grown and now our combined income is in the top 5%. He doesn't get criticized for this, he gets praise and respect. If the character was a "Vernon" instead of "Veronica," would you have more respect, Christopher? Would you have equated this whole thing to "new graduates," or would you have actually listened to the dialog? Be honest.

It's a hard sell. Last time I wanted my qualifications represented fairly in my wage, they didn't hire me, but the one they took left the company pretty fast.
In the next interview (different company), I wanted less than my actual worth and they declined because "if you sell yourself short, then you will do the same with us".
And yes, I did my homework and researched both companies. Fact is, worth is subjective. Everyones financial and emotional investment in their education was different. Even hard facts concerning the price of education will be viewed differently by people.
There is no golden rule that works every time. There are only your principles, luck and that you sit across the right person, at the right time.
We have less control over everything than we thought we do. My career got pretty much killed during Covid. I'm struggling.
