Sweet set up. My mate and I drove from Tokyo to London in 2010 in a 1996 Rav4. Trust me, it was not the ideal car, but that made it all part of the fun. We got some decent all terrain tyres, customised roof racks for storage, additional bash protection underneath which definitely helped. Of course we'd have loved a good vehicle but it wasn't in the budget. But after spending a fair chunk of time off road (pretty much all of the time in Mongolia) and small bit else where along the way, we developed a new found respect for a car that we had previously 100% dismissed. The moral of the story is that we have this amazing planet and if you have the means you should get out there and see it in a car/SUV/bike.

As long as you don't do any mayor modification they are pretty reliable. The problem is that a lot of people go overboard and start messing around with the engine, lifting the suspension to ridiculous heights, fitting massive tires and so on. If you modify any car, you make it unreliable, for proper overlanding is best to keep things as stock as possible.
