HMB is a pricey set, but when I purchase clubs I keep them for 7 or more years. The HMB is the nicest clubs I have ever seen, and they are forgiving. Finally someone makes clubs that are fantastic looking and performing for a wide range of players, not just sub 5 Handicap...

One thing to consider on the price issue if you play graphite shafts in your irons...as I do...TaylorMade has and up charge on graphite shafts and non stock grips while Mizuno does not. I just priced out both clubs to my custom fit specs and the Mizuno MP20 HMB came in at $175 per club vs the TaylorMade 2019 P790 at $202.50 per club. If you compare stock set to sock set you are right the Mizuno is more expensive...cheers from Florida USA

Dispersion differences??? Very important consideration as well. all else considered equal, $40 difference per club is a big difference. Glad you did this comparison as these are the two iron sets I am considering. Well done.

    Nobody has mentioned this yet:
You only had 2 shots under 10 yards offline with the P790, but 8 shots under 10 yards offline with the HMB’s. Your “average offline” figures would be interesting to compare!

I think you make great points in the video. For me what would sway my choice would be the ease of blending within the Mizuno range. Love the idea of help in the long irons with this type of club, but similar looks (at least in the bag) and lofts in the Miunzo line from MB to HMB is a big selling point. Im not sure you could blend a 730 and 790 range quite as easy without having gapping issues.

  • @stevevetovich6771
    @stevevetovich6771 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

One thing to consider here is even though you preferred the "lower" flight of the P790, it can come back to haunt you when comparing 4 iron. The loft may be too low and your P790 4-iron is worthless but your HMB 4-iron is a viable option in your bag. That's the problem I find in these types of irons. Demo-ing the 7-iron is impressive but when you buy the set you can't get the 4 iron off the deck. Personally, I would take the set with the higher-launching 7-iron. Great comparison video. Thanks !!

As always, great review! I ordered a set of the TaylorMade P790's tonight. I am left handed and have a set of MP 20 SEL's. While I think they're really nice irons, I wish Mizuno made the 5 iron in left handed HMB's as well so we can combo them better. The 3 and 4 HMB's in my set are nice but the 5 iron MP 20 MB is still pretty small. I find the MP 20 MB's forgiving enough on mishits, especially thin shots but much prefer the extra help throughout the set in the TM's, especially on those bad days!

P790 sounds better and is very soft feeling
I’ll take the 790 all day over the HMB as you don’t need to mix it with other irons to get a good set.

That Taylormade doesn't go bad for a 5 iron. Who started this nonsense of labeling clubs incorrectly? Callaway. You used to buy a set of irons 3 - SW - 9 clubs. Now you buy a set of irons 5 - PW - 6 clubs but the PW is so strong you need a 48 and a 56 as a bare minimum. You get less clubs for more money.

Just subscribed to your channel although I have watched a few of your videos before. Like you I am a weekend golfer but I do play off a fairly low handicap of +1. Despite that I find that your club tests are relevant and informative. Even though my ball striking is pretty decent, this game is so difficult that any help we can get is appreciated. Watching someone like yourself test clubs and give really brilliant objective information is great.
If we could get over our egos as well as you do, we would probably all improve a little. Now to get through 3 weeks of no golf due to this COVID-19.

I look at it this way, this is Taylormade's 2nd iteration of a game changing club and they have made improvements to their most important iron. Mizuno recognized Taylormade's success and came out with an equivalent type club, probably better looking, that its customers want to buy. Neither manufacturer is a loser here - both will win and it is fantastic for the game that modern type blades have been created that are easier to hit. My personal beef with the Mizuno is I wish the HMB had slightly less offset but I still went out today, demoed it for the 2nd time and then placed an order for an HMB 5 iron, bent 1 degree stronger to 24 degrees, with an upcharged SteelFiber 110gram shaft - all because I can't stand seeing the back of my 24 degree Mizuno Hot Metal Pro 5 iron and it gives me the carry number, ease of strike and high launch and spin conditions I want. I now finally in my life have a 5 iron, that I like the look of, that I can hit with a 45 degree descent angle into the green that carries 195 with good holding power - and I don't play on the PGA Tour. Long high beautiful long irons are something that only Jack Nicklaus could hit - technology has changed that and from a recreational golf perspective, that is amazing.

@@TheAverageGolfer OK, "clearly" might be an overstatement, but here is what I get from the video: by awarding points for looks, feel, sound and price you get to a 2-2 score. There's nothing to separate the clubs. This despite your earlier comment that the Mizuno felt better than anything you hit in years. OK, no problem. But then you go and state that you cannot leave it at a draw and because you prefer a more penetrating flight (only because of the difference in loft), you give the win to Taylormade. And that felt forced to me. When this Corona thing is over I will go to my golf store and will try both the HMB and the P790, and maybe some other club as well, so I am NOT anti-Taylormade. Mizuno sucks for every lefty. They don’t even offer a full set of HMB in left.

Both seem high tbh I know cost is related to individual people it's your money do what you want.
How much better are they than there older versions or any older set.
Good breakdown and review I'm not a customer or there target market I don't think I think it's operator gets results not club so why spend big.

Great video Andy. Really well put together. I’m keen to try both of these irons, once I get over the sticker shock and save some more pennies

    Add 0211?

If I did that head to head I would be shot down too easily

makes sense. i am also an average golfer, but am looking at 0211 and mp20 hmb. going back to your 0211 average distances, they seem bang on to the hmb. just wondering which one is more forgiving? i know you play 0211, would you change now that hmb is out?

@@jerlogcol I'm also really interested in this comparison to the 0211.

The one thing I was hoping to hear was what club is more forgiving?
