I changed the suspension springs by myself!! The dang washer is still knocking.. decided to search again and now I am stumbling upon your video. Hopefully I can do this by myself and it fixes my washer that sounds like a war going on in my basement during a spin cycle.
Thank you for posting this. Never would have thought to look at the plate. I was able to reposition the plate by myself. I had to unclip the back spring and then alternate inserting 3/4" boards under the motor and gear box as I "walked" it upwards. Then I could take my time repositioning the plate.
Came across this exact problem myself and fixed it the very same way. not keeping the washer upright when it was transported is what caused mine to have that plate shift out of alignment. I laid mine completely on it’s back and was able to maneuver the plate back into its correct position, no more problems. Good video for helping someone else out with this situation. By the way I didn’t have this problem with the washer before and it started after it was moved into the basement and not kept upright.
You saved me. Sock got stuck in pump removed the sock put it back together. Took the whole neighborhood to hold it in the house. Found your video. Did like you said. And all the neighborhood went back home. Thsnks
I have spent almost $400 having appliance repair guys come to fix my Whirlpool washer. I finally was told it was I needed a new balance ring that is on the top part of my tub. Whirlpool has discontinued that part for my machine. I am out of money with repair men and unable to get the part. I can't afford a new machine right now, as I've spent as much to "fix" mine. HA ! Seeing this video while looking for a video on how to repair a balance ring I am almost overjoyed. I do have HOPE. I'm going to look under the tub for this bracket and hope this is it. I'll post what I find. THANK YOU SO MUCH
This video maybe a couple years old but it was my saving grace. I had literally checked everything and couldn’t figure out why it was still banging around and off balance. I was to the point of breaking down to get a different washer. So thank you very much putting this video up. It was exactly what was wrong with mine.
Excellent diagnosis!!! My sears 500 had been Shaking like crazy..all 5 springs good, plate location good, even removed balance ring to make sure fluid was there..I did notice my drum movement was very sticky...pads again , were perfect. I pushed up the drum and sprayed silicone lube on all 6 pad sets...washer runs perfectly..another possible cause..sticky pads
The old washer in my place had the motor fail and I had just replaced it with a second hand one when the "new" one had this issue during the first load I ran. I had tried replacing the spring in the back, checked all the others, leveled it, was considering either calling out a professional or replacing the balance ring when I finally found this video. This was exactly my issue and while it took some contorting to do it myself (and a fair amount of cursing), it absolutely fixed the problem! Thank you so much!
Just replaced basket drive assembly and this issue showed up (wasn't the original problem). Other youtube channel said nothing about aligning up the parts when removing/re-installing motor/drive/pump assembly as you explained. THANK YOU!
You are the man. Very good analysis. I had moved my washer. After moving it back it went out of balance. Without your video, I would have lost time and money. Thanks a LOT.
Just encountered this after changing springs,, could not figure out ,,BUT PULLING MY HAIR OUT WHY?.... YOU ARE A GENIUS LIFESAVER! Thank you a million times over for making this video.. CHEERS!
Josh I can't thank you enough for posting this video. I had the inner and outer tubs off 4 times. My wife and I prayed about it,, about 30 seconds later she found your video. Your video is spot on. Now our 20 plus year old washer is humming like a champ!
Josh me and my 25 year old granddaughter changed the suspension by ourselves it worked it was aggravating as hell but it worked I didn't realize it could've been a number of other things making my tub shake like that though I'm so glad that did it!
we've replaced all the suspension and counterbalance springs on our 90's Kitchenaid washer and still had the tub leaning front right after a few loads, just sent this to my husband as something for us to check next. Thank you because I refuse to get one of those newer washers that don't wash clothes properly ever again!
Thank you so much! I replaced the bearings and seals after noticing a leak and then the bouncing started! I was replacing the springs and happened upon this video…saved my brain from exploding. Thank you so much again!
Josh . I followed part of what you just did on your vid . I’m in UK but got a really old whirlpool top loader . I’m talking probably 32 years old and had the symptoms you described but found a string on the floor once I’d got the cabinet off it was a thin spring one leg longer than the other . Put it back on after drilling a small hole IB frame so fingers crossed it’ll run ok .. your tips helped me a bit 👍
THANK YOU! I was about to take the machine outside for target practice. Finally, after weeks of trying to find out how to fix and replacing parts, I found your video and it saved my sanity.
You have helped me so much I'm a 55 year old disabled woman and I just repaired my washing machine with the aid of your videos and I'd like to thank you for that because it just saved me over $300 It was only a $20 fix so THANK YOU SO MUCH I'll for a question about this jumping around of the wash drum After I repaired the machine I recalibrated it now you have me questioning something shouldn't my recalibration have reset that bracket if it would have been knocked off ( I really don't want to have to wrestle that machine by myself again )🥴😖😵
Thanks a heap, man. This was exactly my issue. Replaced the clutch and coupler for a different reason and this must've moved in the process. They never mentioned to check it in any of repair videos I watched. Thanks again!!!
This is the exact washer that I have. I started off by finding a leak from somewhere underneath. After taking the whole machine apart, I discovered it was the hose. So, I tried to put the machine back together the best that I could. I am having a problem lining up the outer most part the machine back together, but I thought I did everything else correctly, as far as the springs go. Now I tun the washer and it is most definitely obnoxious and loudly banging. Going to check out what you have shown in this video. Thanks!
Thank you soooo much, because my washer is very off balanced. I haven't taken it apart yet but was looking at a few videos just to get some ideas of what could be wrong with mine. And your video has to be the closest to what is going on with my machine.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Went & bought all new springs because the used Kenmore I'd just bought (my old Maytag's transmission went out, more's the pity) was banging the sides of the machine like a monster was trying to get out. Yes. That bad. Once I took the cover off, the tub was sitting VERY wonky and all the springs looked good. I moved the tub and it seemed like it would move from one very off position to the next - never sitting properly. So I looked underneath and something didn't seem right. Mind you, I've NEVER worked on a washer before, but I could tell something wasn't right, so I came on here and searched - figured someone, somewhere should have the answer, and here you were! This is the EXACT problem. Now to to fix it. Thanks again!
Great video thank u for sharing! I was so frustrated after thinking I fixed it and putting it together just to hear sounds from the basement like a freight train was passing thru!❤
Thank you for thinking about us who love our older top loading machines. You can't replace quality with technology advances when it comes to washing machines. Great job!
You are a freaking genius. I struggled with this for hours after replacing the clutch. I cracked the plastic tub. After this simple fix the machine runs like new.
Ikr thank God for internet information highway!! So many things to learn & not be so intimated by! We can all fix things if we are paying attention patient & persistent!🙏🏽👌🙌🏽👋🏼
After having exhausted all other options and stumbling upon your video and not verifying it to be my issue. I am damn near 100 percent certain this will fix
Thanks a ton!!! I’ve done all the springs and shocks and the washer still smashed around. Got under it like you said and whadda ya know, the stinking plate was off just like you said. Got er lined back up and now it spins like a top. Thanks again
Thank you for sharing. Am having that problem with my kemore. I was about to throw out the washer. You just might save me lots of money. I will give this a try tomorrow. And I will update you if it worked
OMG I have been going crazy with my Whirlpool Cabrio doing a dance. First I replaced the bearings, then the rotor sensor, then the springs and now its actually moving all around the kitchen. My son is fed up but I am determined to find out what is wrong. You are a genius!!! I will show him your video and again have him take it apart to see if this is the problem, but I'm sure it is. I always do large blankets but THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Thanks! I think you've been am essential help! Being a former mechanical engineering student and mechanically inclined, not to mention scouring MANY TH-cam videos to find a solution that didn't seem apparent, I came across your video and this potential cause, which no other video I have seen addressed. After watching your discovery, I rechecked my machine, and I think my issue matches! Going to address it shortly. Appreciate your discovery of this cause. Helped me out tremendously.
Thank you so much, it's been 3 Days of hell trying to figure out why my whirlpool sounds like it's got horses trotting around inside. I have ordered springs and pads from Amazon, if this works 🤞 I will let you know and make my own video and mention your video. But I'm highly confident this is what happening to me because everything on this machine looks presine. So thank you so much!
Thanks for this, I just replaced the clutch and must have knocked this around in the process! Also, I laid the washer down on its back and it took about 3 seconds to spin back around properly. This after fighting with my wife for 5 minutes trying to get her to lift it up enough to be able to spin freely.
thats great to hear, you didn't need help doing this then? I just changed suspension rods by myself and hoping this is the problem, I'm still getting lots of banging in spin cycle
Thanks bud I never knew this and thanks to your video I figured it out. The reason I say this is because I just replaced the spring rods for the first time and it's still off so ty ty ty have good night.
MAN! Not sure yet if this is my issue, but I just wanted to let ya know I appreciate you making this video! No fun repairing stuff that should work as intended, but at least there are nice folks out there like you to help us along the way! Thanks again!❤
Huge help! I recently replaced my transmission and motor and didn't have a balance issue before I did this now I know what to check. Thanks man! Liked, commented, and subscribed for this fix!
I have the same model washer with the same problem. I have been scouring the Internet for solutions, and they all say “springs, brackets, suspension pads, etc.”. So I removed my cabinet last night to examine these parts, and they all appear to be fine. I began to wonder if the springs could look fine while still being fatigued/worn enough to cause the issue. Also, I had to consider whether the problem is deep inside- maybe it’s the washer drive block, which would require much more disassembly than I’m capable of accomplishing. But now, thanks to you and this excellent video, I have another possible solution. Even if it turns out not to be the answer for my washer, many thanks for providing the solution for so many people!
I tried all these fixes to get the washer to stop shaking. Here is how I fixed it. Take out the tub, it comes right out after removing the center bolt. Flip the tub upside down and shake it. Remove the $2.50 in coin trapped between the two parts of the tub. That's it, the shocks are fine, they slide on the rods, the springs are fine if not broken. Washer works like new.
Thank you for this video!!! I did not have a manual for my washer and your video is the only one that had an identical washer even though my unit is a kenmore.
Appliance parts pros could even help me after I had purchased and replaced bearing, seals, and a transmission for spin noise (separate issue). But was stumped with balance issue and couldn’t help. Thanks for the video, it was a big help!
Thanks so much for your video. This help me fix my mom's washer today.. I was going in there blind and she lives 40 miles away. This was exactly the problem..
This wuz my problem . . . I had my masheen laying down and being moved around wile I wuz replacing clutch . . . Wen tryz 2 use it after, the no spin problem wuz solved but it wuz jumping violently. You solved my problem. THANK YOU!!!
OMG you’re a genius!! this has to be what is wrong with mine! I replaced the shaft seals and bearings and while I was under there pounding away with a hammer I must have dislodged this Going to pull the cover and check tomorrow.
She has bigger guns than me....I just made the excuse of being the one to get on the dirty floor so she didn't have to...but honestly I didn't think I could lift it....
Thank you! I got rid of a machine several years ago that I couldn't get it to stop banging. I replaced the drive coupler in the unit I have now and it started doing the same thing. This fixed it!
I replaced my tyb base frame, skid pads and bumpers in 2019, so I know exactly what you're talking about. Good video for an easy fix for an off balance washer. Im still trying tobf8gureboutbwhat rheb3 little hanging cups with the thick nail used as a weight does? One fell off. Im going to put it back up near the springs. I think it just balances the tub.
Great video, Thank You. Replaced the shaft bearings and seals on my Kitchen Aid Washer and this plate was mis-aligned after. Could not figure out where it was supposed to go until I saw your video.
Thanks so much! I had done the clutch repair along with the capacitor due to no spin, I guess all that new force that it didn't used to have now had the strength to break the inner tub shaft where it had been rusting away. After replacing the inner tub it was spinning really bad and couldn't figure it out as the springs looked fine. Saw your video and remembered while I was doing the clutch that plate had some loose and I didn't realize it had to be lined up a certain way. Lifted it up with a piece of wood (was thinking later a scissor jack might work too) and was able to line it up correctly and now it's working great again!
On Kenmores/Whirlpools if you take the inner and outer tubs off with the agitator you will find that plate which on mine is triangle shaped has alignment holes. There also happens to be 2 alignment pin containers on the sides of the main platform. Take the pins out and use them to properly orient the triangular shaped tub support back in place and then stow the alignment pins back where they were. These older machines are SO much better than the sensitive newer styles and much more dependable. It's a shame the government stuck their useless nose in to mandate water saving machines that work like garbage.
Has nothing to do with how much water they use, and everything with manufacturing cheaper stuff that looks like the guts of a Mattel toy electric car. The new machines look cute on the outside, but underneath it's a mess of skinny plastic pulleys and skimpy sheet metal.
Thank you very much. Your video make my day succesfully. Problem fixed after a long day trying to figure out why it was jumping so much. Regards from Panama.
Ty so much for this vid. I just replaced my outer tub and all the springs on my old kenmore and yes these old school machines are definitely the best longest lasting washers out there. Anyhow my drum is slamming violently to where u gotta kill the machine before it wrecks itself. I'm going to check that floating plate deck and see if that's my issue. I will definitely let you know ...again ty so much for this super awesome video
That was the problem ! Hurricane Helene flood waters were rising fast so to save my washer I tossed it up on milk crates and dislodged that plate. It didn't seem right, changed springs and those new pads didn't pad anything with that plate moved. I refused to be like most of the people around here that just threw away everything after the flood instead of trying to fix it. The motor got wet with salt water so I rinsed it with fresh water oiled it and it worked, was like cool I saved it then got this shaking problem !
Thank you so much for sharing this. I was afraid I damaged the transmission/rod last time even though I’ve taken apart several times successfully before. Took me a while to find this video but so glad I did before ordering new parts smh.
Thanks a lot .I thought I threw a rod or something. When I found out these things don't even have a crank I knew right then and there I was in trouble.
Thank you for this video . We checked the springs ,and pads all good . Hopefully this is our problem with the washer . Thank you so much for this video
If you look at the video at 2:51 to your right there will be a little clear capsule attached to the frame, there are 3 of these on most washers, inside of the capsule there is a steel pin, these are called transport pins. When a washer is moved you insert these pins in the corresponding holes under each one, each pin has a little hole in its head, you can thread a little thin rope thru all 3 and this keeps your washer from moving inside ,its pain to do so no one does it but they do it at the factory,it holds all the components together for transportation, once you get your washer where you want it just pull on the rope and the little pins will fall back into their capsules and your done.
Isnt that plate called a skate plate. Anyway I seen another video on tilted tub. Mine is tilted forward and some of the water is spilling behind tub . Anyway the other video took the pump and motor out way then lifted tub with a piece of wood to freely align skate plate. I like your way better, get the wife to earn her keep and lift tub.
I have a 28 year old Kenmore 80 Series and at some point in time the basket gradually started leaning to the left. I replaced the suspension springs thinking that was the problem but it wasn't. After viewing this video and removing the cover and looking for the plate Josh spoke of, I noticed that the front adjustment screw on the left was lower than the one on the right. With the use of a level I discovered that it was a bubble off. After adjusting the right to left level and checking the front to back and adjusting as necessary, the basket now sits straight with a load in it. Just something to think about and check if your machine's basket is leaning to one side.
You should do a video of this so I can see exactly what you're talking about. I've had this issue several times with the basket leaning to the right and have yet to figure it out. Sounds like you might have figured it out! If it's not too much trouble and you feel like shooting me a couple of pictures if posting a video is not an option I would love to discuss this further. My email is josh.cobb85@gmail.com.
Man, I enyoyed your video and was laughing all the time cause it sounded funny but accurat at the problem. You described exactly my experience triying to find out what was the problems since the suspension rods seemed to be fine. Josh thanks a lot, from Puerto Rico.
The kenmore series 70 has 3 plastic sleeves that hold a steel pin. The pin goes through the skate plate and frame. The sleeves originally had something like foam or similar that kept pin in place on skate plate. I repacked the sleeves with cotton to keep pins from falling back into sleeve and allowing skate plate to move around on spin cycle. The horrible shaking on spin stopped. Our machine is 31 years old so whatever was originally in those plastic sleeves disintegrated and disappeared over time.
Greetings and thanks for this post. There's an imbalancing issue and agitating issue so hopefully this will help with an 80s series kenmore washer 🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Diagnose and suggested fix correct. Thank you. I also bent the spring brackets for the old springs to increase the tensions. Have another question about this type of washer. The Maytad repairman where I bought the parts for the rubber clutch and gear assembly told me that the drive motor was a birectional, 2 speed DC motor. When I look at the schematic at the back panel I did not agree with this. Did not see any circuit for the AC/DC conversion like big diodes etc. I did see the big start up capacitor for 1 directional AC motors. The agitator back and forth movement is done mechanically by the "oval gear" in the gear box and not switching the polarity of a DC motor. Am I right?
What about knocking, my machine sounds like a black hawk copter taking off. It’s a Kenmore stacked, dryer on top and washer below. B the way, thanks for a crucial tip Your the only one dude. You the Man..
I changed the suspension springs by myself!! The dang washer is still knocking.. decided to search again and now I am stumbling upon your video. Hopefully I can do this by myself and it fixes my washer that sounds like a war going on in my basement during a spin cycle.
Good luck!
@@joshcobb4100 thanks!! It's fixed and that was the issue! Been working good since. But wish I would have known before doing the rods😔
My situation now. Changed the springs last night, now looking for further answers.
My situation as well.. Maytag. Changed the springs worked for 1 day, now I'm going to try this as well
Well changed springs but havent tested if it was cause of the banging. If it still has issues ill try this solution. Thx
You are the only one here with the most accurate diagnosis of the bouncing issue. Everyone else is throwing parts upselling.
Thank you bud
I had moved my washer. After moving it back it was out if balance. Your video helped fix it. Thanks so much.
Glad it helped you all!
Thank u, now my washer is like a drum, I’ll try to checked it later
Solved my banging washer. Thank you so much. You just saved me hours of looking for an affordable replacement washer.
Awesome!!

I realigned it & instant smooth operation.

I got to thinking after watching this video that should be the first thing to check for the Shake Rattle and Roll problem. Great video 👍
I’m going to check that, my grandson checked the springs and they were all ok but still way off balance. Thanks, I will comment again to let you know.
Awesome!
Just used this video to fix my washer and impress my wife. Thanks! BTW, the piece on the bottom of my washer was white metal, so a lot easier to spot.
Then my job here is done ;)

Thank you so much, it's been 3 Days of hell trying to figure out why my whirlpool sounds like it's got horses trotting around inside. I have ordered springs and pads from Amazon, if this works 🤞 I will let you know and make my own video and mention your video. But I'm highly confident this is what happening to me because everything on this machine looks presine. So thank you so much!
Let us know how it goes and link your video!! Thanks!!
Great!
MAN! Not sure yet if this is my issue, but I just wanted to let ya know I appreciate you making this video! No fun repairing stuff that should work as intended, but at least there are nice folks out there like you to help us along the way! Thanks again!❤
We gotta help each other out and save that $$$!!
Huge help! I recently replaced my transmission and motor and didn't have a balance issue before I did this now I know what to check. Thanks man! Liked, commented, and subscribed for this fix!
i bet that's my problem. Makes total sense. I was thinking same thing it's not the springs.
You are spot on!! All the others say springs, springs....thanks for settling the issue pal! Great work!
I do what I can! Thanks!
Thank you for posting this video. I changed my clutch and then the machine was going nuts by shaking. Thank you for saving me money and time!
Thank you for your videos! These DIY repair help me keep my rent down. My landlord will use any expense he incurs to raise my rent.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
It worked! Thanks so much. This part seems to be called a "skate plate", I found another video about it

Your wife must have some serious guns of her. I tried this with my 5 foot 115 pound wife and it was a no go. Congrats to you both.
She has bigger guns than me....I just made the excuse of being the one to get on the dirty floor so she didn't have to...but honestly I didn't think I could lift it....
😅 I just had this problem and I was looking up the problem found your video and that’s exactly what it was thanks big dawg❤
Right On Bro! I'll check that critical part out before I even assume it's the springs or the suspension rods
I wonder if those pins are also shipping isolation pins?
Has nothing to do with how much water they use, and everything with manufacturing cheaper stuff that looks like the guts of a Mattel toy electric car. The new machines look cute on the outside, but underneath it's a mess of skinny plastic pulleys and skimpy sheet metal.
Thanks for the info I have a washer that's doing that at this moment it was driving me crazy
U the man ! Thats exactly what happens to ours. Wifey washed a heavy blanket and it through it off balance. Thanks !
Those gosh dern blankets....I'm more of a fuzzy socks and HUGE electric bill kinda guy....
You just saved me from kicking the front of mine in. Mine was so bad it put a hole in the drum. Thank you so much!!
Genius. Makes me wanna go out and pick up "broken" washing machines and "fix" them!
I do it everyday
You should keep an eye out for these direct drive models
Does it work for a whirlpool washing machine that is not direct drive?
Been looking at other videos, after looking at yours, I can't wait yo pull my machine apart and take a look!!
Just put in new suspension rod and still the same problem I will do what you show in this video hopefully this can fix the issue thanks
Thanks! That fixed it! My washing machine from 1995 is still going
Keep on chuggin!
Been scratching my head have changed everything thanks fo the info👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks a lot .I thought I threw a rod or something. When I found out these things don't even have a crank I knew right then and there I was in trouble.
Just what I needed....was sure the springs were ok! Thank u for making video for DIYers.
Amazing! Thank you so much. Such an easy fix. I watched so many videos on this issues. You are definitely the only one to show this fix.
Holly crap that's what was wrong with my machine!!! Thanks bro! Perfect video!!
Thank you for this video . We checked the springs ,and pads all good . Hopefully this is our problem with the washer . Thank you so much for this video
Thanks brother! I was about to go crazy I changed out the basket drive and then this happened! 💆🏽♂️ thanks again ✊🏽
Bought one of these used...bracket must of got off center during transit. Thanks a million for your video
Much appreciated man! This was my exact problem and you just saved my bacon. Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video
Thank you for the tip.
I will look into it and put a comment what it was. Thanks.
Amazing. You saved my sanity. Been trying to figure this one out for a couple days now. Thank you.
Glad to help!
You’re the goat for this video. Helped out tremendously, nobody has a video on this but you lol
Nice job and good explanation, I just rebuilt the transmission and it laying by it side did move these thanks for the info
Was waiting for that sumbich to fly apart on the spin cycle.
Me too! I thought tub was gonna fly through lid!
Me three!
Me four!

Thanks for watching!
I found this to be exactly what the problem was. Thanks
Am I right?
Correct the motor only rotates in one direction. The newer ones do both directions, but not these older ones.
Thank you for explaining it and not making a really long video very helpful
I try to keep em short... but sometimes I talk to much lol.
I'm typically the shortest....wait....
What about knocking, my machine sounds like a black hawk copter taking off. It’s a Kenmore stacked, dryer on top and washer below. B the way, thanks for a crucial tip Your the only one dude. You the Man..
