Deep Dive: 6.8mm Next Gen Weapon US Army

  • I think the world is ready for plastic cased ammunition. I think we can handle a 6.8mm rifle. I believe fire control systems will change the future of firearms more than anything else. The US army's 6.8mm Next Generation Squad Weapon bid has a lot at stake and a lot riding on it. I mean nothing too big, just the fate of the free world.

      Back when our marines and Army had to shoot human waves of Chinese soldiers they used 30-06 to kill them and it held 8 rounds at a time. How would you like to have to double tap 200 soldiers coming towards your foxhole? Yeah, so no more of this lie about the capability of 5.56 because it is a lie. 30-06 or 7.62*51 does the job with one.round.

    Growing up, shooting out to 1000 yards was a thing of legends. Now a days a $1000 rifle and $1000 scope will have just about anyone with a bit of training hitting targets at 1000 yards all day long.

      @juantoomany7202 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don’t mean this in a snarky way so please don’t take my comment as being intended to insult you in any way. But there’s a lot more to it than that. “A bit of training” isn’t enough. Understand what you’re rifle and ammunition are doing is the key, and that takes a lot of work. You can’t buy experience. But yes, I agree the quality of equipment now, (especially optics), is amazing compared to 20-30 plus years ago. And I also agree that it’s more affordable than ever.

      @@juantoomany7202 true. The type of gun matters. The caliber matters. The ammunition matters. And potentially dozens of other things and how it all comes together. But years ago all of these things were viewed with an almost mystical reverence. Now a days the tools are not just better but so is the documentation, and therefore the available training. There was bit of hyperbole in my statement but a few decades ago a 1000 yards use to seem impossible. Today the knowledge and equipment to accomplish it are well with in the reach of most people.

We had iron sights, pvs 5's, M-60's (The Pig and Tank), BDU's and the only folks with body armor were the Rangers. If the enemy (present and future) now have body armor that defeats the 556, it's time to change it up. Just keep it simple, we tend to overcomplicate shit and then we find out it doesn't work, F-35, Zumwalt, and the US Army UCP.

      @Fondil Mahbols The word that the USAF is now looking for a new replacement should tell you something. Also it has a smaller gun, less ammo for it, smaller payload and less range than the planes it suppose to replace is a problem. The down time per flight hours is also very high. Trust me I wish it worked, but it doesn't.

    • @BourneCreations
      @BourneCreations 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brandon _37 I read different, about it's downtime compared to the F-15 and F-16. But the fuel capacity I believe is still less than most jets, and since it's stealth it can't use external fuel tanks. I guess it can use tanker support. Who knows, the machine is only as good as the pilots and the USAF are some of the best. So they'll make it work.

      @ostiariusalpha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@samuelbishop3316 It's not actually more complex than a conventional rifle, it is just that all the parts are larger and more distributed in the frame of the gun. On a conventional design, say an AR-10, the operational parts are almost all contained neatly and compactly on the bolt carrier group. There's some drawbacks to that though: small parts break more easily (broken bolt lugs, broken extractor claw, broken ejector spring, broken cam pin bridges on the bolt, etc. are relatively common). The Textron weapon takes all those functional mechanical bits and makes larger and stronger equivalents, so you have a large cam rail instead of a small cam pin, a solid rising chamber rather than a rotating bolt, and a beefy extractor/ejector unit in the place of two small separate pieces that have small fiddly springs.

      There's a reason why most countries that adopted bullpups 30 years ago are switching back to traditional rifles. There just isn't enough benefit and they always end up being more problematic, and less ergonomic. China just announced they're going to a non bullpup, New Zealand changed to LMT rifles, France went from the FAMAS to the 416. Close to zero SF units use bullpups, and almost exclusively use an AR platform or G36. There also also problems like not being ambidextrous. Bullpups were more than likely a fad, that will continue to die out. The most reasonable option is the Sig rifle, every time the US does weapons trials they are far too ambitious, and try to go way high and right. That was the case with SPIW, the ACR program, and OICW.

    • @pieluver1234
      @pieluver1234 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bower31 The FAMAS got axed because it's fundamentally unreliable compared to the HK416. Plus everybody is using the AR platform, so countries believe it's simpler to just stick to it. But there's no point in sticking to the AR platform if it is fundamentally inferior in certain ways. There's a reason why countries who've adopted the Steyr AUG and IWI Tavor have continued fielding them. Also keep in mind, bullpup has been more widely used within the past 50 years, compared to all the other conventional rifles out there.
      The GD NGSW bullpup with the longer barrel fundamentally provides better ballistics, longer barrel life, and smaller chamber pressure compared to other contestants. Plus, they can even further increase the chamber pressure to achieve even better ballistics, whereas other contestants have already reached their pressure ceilings without increasing the barrel length

      The 5.56 cartridge weighs 12 grams and a 30 Rd mag is 1 pound.
      The 7.62 cartridge weighs 24 grams and a 20 round mag weighs a 1 1/2 pounds.
      The SIG 6.8 weighs 22 grams, so the weight is the same as the 6.5 Creedmoor. No weight savings. In fact, they would double the ammo load for the squad, not lighten it.

Even if Sig’s hybrid case can hit velocity through a 16 inch barrel, it’ll drop too low once every branch starts chopping down barrels. I think the competition would be waste if Sig win. This isn’t a full adoption, it’s about finding where to go next.
    I am okay with bull pup design because I have used them before and think their underrated. Being compact with a long barrel gives you a certain best of both worlds when it comes to dynamic fighting environments.
    Most people who hate have little to no experience with them.
    TS is probably my favourite bid in that it is very experimental and promising, but I would be interested to see the US Army give a bull pup a proper go.

    • @matthiuskoenig3378
      @matthiuskoenig3378 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      longer barrels are also not inherently good, especially if you can get the range and lethality out of a shorter barrel, that is due to barrel cost, barrel warping and barrel weight (amongst other issues) and if you make a bullpup with too short a barrel you end up with a far too rear heavy weapon. if the other bids are capable of the ranges the bullpup is just added costs, with little advantages [that said the bids are also ammunition, so in this specific case the bullpup might still win due to characteristics derived from its ammo].
      also bullpup designs are not underrated as (prior to widespread use of FCS) they are pointless as traditionally configured carbines already have the accuracy and hitting power to real world engagement ranges. Bullpups were like pre-ww1 rifles, glorified shooting range weapons, paying a bunch of negatives for advantages that are not practically used in the field. that said since the army is issuing FCS to regular infantry a bullpup should be more closely considered.

      You can't really use bullpups in the proned position tho, thats one of the many reasons China is replacing their QBZ-95 bullpup rifle with the QBZ-191, and most militaries don't use bullpups bcuz they aren't the best choice and the sig would be a better option bcuz its not completely different from the m4 and the soldiers wouldn't have to learn on a completely different rifle like a bullpup

    • @pieluver1234
      @pieluver1234 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthiuskoenig3378 it is the exactly opposite. To achieve the same ballistics, shorter barrels require higher chamber pressure, which further wears out the barrel and requires more frequent barrel changes while also increasing recoil. Longer barrels require much less chamber pressure and hence has a longer barrel life. Might wanna tone down on the unreasonable bullpup hate

      @@DLI002 That's a myth. You can prone with a bullpup as easily as a traditional rifle. Chinese military swapped because they wanted something more traditional, unrelated to the proning.

    Let's say that the brass casing takes 20% heat out of the weaping when it leaves. The polymer takes only 5% with ist. That's 15% more heat for the barrel. With a barrel that hot after 5 mags you are not going to hit the ocean from a Dinghy. Ask the german soldiers in Afghanistan about that problem in the G36.
