I think they should do two things.Use the polymer ammo and Maybe lengthen the SIG Barrel from 13 to 16 to make up some velocity l. If they could get 2850 fps with a high BC bullet included Bea big winner.

    I wonder how this hybrid ammo would do in a smaller intermediate cartridge. Even if they don't win, it would be cool to see them develop a smaller intermediate cartridge platform with the necessary strengthening for the higher chamber pressure. Maybe it could provide a better balance of power and more easily managed recoil. And since the ammo doesn't appear to be backwards compatible with other guns due to higher chamber pressures, that could free them up to try out different casing and bullet size combinations. I saw one that is basically a 6.8 bullet in a 5.56 case. That could give be a nice opportunity to mix the government researched (I'm assuming AP) bullet for the NGSW with the readily available magazines. Make it an AR pattern for ease of use and it could be a good backup option for the Army if they find out the NGSW winner has too much recoil for effective use in combat. It could also be an option for other nations that are also changing their rifles to deal with armor but don't want to go to something like a battle rifle.

    Finally hardcore-Google-worriored enough tp find out that the steel he's referring to is called "maraging steel". It's an iron alloy that's mixed with nickel, titanium, and other crap, but then it under goes an "aging" process, where, as I understand it, it's heat treated over a long period of time which produces a super specific type formation in actual crystalline structure of the steel.

    I still kinda like the GD rifle more. It just seems like a bigger leap forward than the SIG bid. Plus the polymer ammo can be used on other weapons as well, which would improve lethality, range, and also streamline logistics. Reusing M240s and M4s with the new round would be great for reserve or guard forces. The hybrid case sounds nice, but ultimately I think the Army would want to finally pull the trigger on a polymer round, or even that caseless Textron round. I don't know, but the SIG bid just doesn't seem to add anything new.

Should be able to get 2800 fps and with a high BC bullet it would be still be supersonic out past 1000 yards. US Army wants too much out of one round. IMO a round that shoots flatter, bucks wind better and goes a few hundred yards further is well worth switching to.

    What I get hung up on in trying to reimagine in my own mind what's best... and it's the 6.8mm
    Why 6.8?
    Is it because it needs to fill the role of a 7.62 machinegun, so the projectiles need comparable payload? Tracers, AP penetrators?
    Because if they can contain enough compound or enough tungsten in a 6.5, or 25 cal, or a 6mm... then why not? Achieving the necessary velocity would be easier, and we already know a 123 gr 6.5 is efficient, light, but heavy enough to floor a deer, but high enough BC to land hits well out to 1000 yards, even in the Grendel, even better in the Creedmoor.
    Wouldn't a hotrodded 6.5 be better?
    I understand why 6mm is a bit small (even though the 6mm arc is getting very high praise, a MG in it would be pretty awesome) do what about .25 instead? A 120 gr hybrid profile .25 would have a BC higher than the best 130 gr 6.8 available. Using a rifle designed for the higher pressure the spear is, but running a gentler, smaller, intermediate round thats souped up to achieve battle rifle power would keep weight lower, capacity higher, and full auto more manageable.
    So then why 6.8?

    • @buddermonger2000
      @buddermonger2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically the US military did a bunch of secret tests and figured out the 6.8mm caliber had the best ballistics of any caliber. Even 6.5. So they wanted it as it goes farther and will be faster to better damage body armor.

The only time you'll need to use a charging handle is A. if you're chambering a round for the first time or B. clearing a malfunction. Neither of which require you to stay hard on the gun. As for it being its own dust cover, the bolt is its own dust cover when closed. It's an unneeded option to increase chances of losing parts, parts breaking, and overall more problems. The standard MCX Rattler, Virtus, and Patrol don't have it and neither do normal AR style weapons. I can see that no one is talking about the elephant in the room here. I am afraid this Sig rifle will be too front heavy with that scope and suppressor. That's a major drawback with this design. If they want a scope and a suppressor as standard equipment, the only way to do that is with a bull pump design, toe even out the weight distribution. General dynamics' rifle with a polymer case is the best choice. However, their machinegun replacement does not fill the same tactical niche as a machinegun, so here they are at a fault. Here Sig should get the contract, but with the polymer ammo. Sig's ammo is also too heavy when the technology for lighter polymer casings are ready, according to the army. All of this will matter during the trial. It might be that they go for a round 2 with more requirements, such as bull pump design due to weight distribution, polymer casings, and belt fed machinegun. Now Sig and Textron would have to develop a bull pump, while GD would have to develop a belt fed machinegun. Fair for all parties.

    • @buddermonger2000
      @buddermonger2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A: Scope isn't part of the gun
      B: They all have suppressors and Textron didn't need a bulpup.
      Also front heavy seems overall kind of moot when they were slinging under mounted shotguns and grenade launchers. Also bullpups are notoriously disliked and triggers will matter when your soldier is making kilometer long shots. You're right about the ammo though.

    Would you consider taking a look at this one here? A small case, I think but interesting nonetheless. Polish - Belarusian border and the refugees from Syria and Iraq told to "being used" and "transported with Russian planes to Minsk" and then "transferred to the border". "People know they're being used [by Mr. Lukashenko], but they have no future," Mr. Ahmed said. - BBC. The weaponizing of the migration as hybrid activities in the seek of chaos. Maybe an escalation, getting some leverage for future dispute with UE perhaps.
    The deadly cases of Covid in both countries went out of the roof. A long time kept low prices of oil, and a global crisis took its toll. Lukashenko was also pushed hard by the Belarusian opposition, with Mr. Putin eventually stepping in.

    GD-ost is much better than "spear". In my opinion.

    CT ammo or bust. If we don't take the leap now many of your viewers will die of old age before they see a true step forward in firearms

      That seems like the best way to go until we can figure out caseless ammo.

      I wouldn't say that any of these are really "a true step forward". We've basically reached a plateau in firearms design. I don't think we'll see a major innovation in small arms until batteries get light and powerful enough to make gauss/railgun designs viable.

    The firearm looks cool, but the people at Sig Sauer are detestable human beings who are willing to risk your life with crappy products that they use you - the consumer - to beta test their unfinished products. What was the last product that was released by them that didn't have problems? MPX - Nope (too many problems to count). P365 - Nope, plus they LIED about not doing incremental updates. P320 - Nope, failed the Drop test and they KNEW that Police Departments were using them (NO RECALL!). Sig Cross - Nope, this one was so bad that they actually recalled these. How many soldiers will be killed because Sig tenders unfinished products that they know will put the users' lives in danger? All for the dollar. What a grotesque group of people.
