In my last video, I detailed the experience I’ve been having with my Tesla Model Y, Model Y Issues, and Tesla service. Tesla is known to have less than ideal quality control, and this is still an issue on their newest car, the Model Y. Ultimately, I’ve come to this conclusion: The Model Y Was Released too Early.
After delivery, I started noticing issues, and more started popping up as I drove the car.
I had Model Y Paint issues where the paint was missing in a couple small areas, the Model Y rear seats were not aligned properly, the trim on the roof was loose, the front trunk was having an issue saying it was open, when it wasn’t, the window didn’t roll down properly and caused a gash on the trim, the head rests squeaked with every bump, the rear seats rattled, the drive side window rattled, the front headlight had this issue where you push on it, and it gives a little, and the car has a general settling sound.
For the rear seat alignment, Tesla said they did not have a fix for it since it is a brand new car.
y windshield needs replacing (got hit by a large rock).
Well the day I posted that video, the issue that the front trunk was having came back in full force, making it incredibly frustrating to drive the car.
It was popping up and flashing constantly. And then, anytime I would go into autopilot, it would force me out of it.
Ultimately, after my experiences so far, I feel like Tesla just released the Model Y too quickly. They need to hit sales and production numbers, and it was exciting to see them actually beat a deadline, but the Model Y wasn’t ready.
I brought my Model Y in a third time for service.
The next day they called, detailed the fix for the front trunk bug, and let me know that they sourced the remaining parts for my future appointment, including the windshield, from other service centers. They expedited all of this for me since they understood how frustrating it is to keep coming in.
The next day, I picked it up and they walked me through everything.
First, and most importantly, they fixed the front trunk bug. They said it was an issue with the front computer. They fixed it, and I’ve driven the car quite a bit with no issue. The Model Y Front Trunk also latches much better now.
Second, and secondly important, they fixed the rear seat alignment! According to them, Tesla had just pushed out an official update to the seats themselves that week.
Tesla is now making the Model Y with the corrected seats, and they are shipping the fixes to service centers.
Next, there was some glue residue coming off of my B-Pillar, and Tesla replaced the pillar entirely, since that is what needed to be done.
Third, Tesla fixed the trim coming loose on the driver side door.
They actually fixed the whole headliner, around the car, which was a little loose and now it looks great.
They also re-aligned the liftgate, and the hood. These were issues I had never mentioned to them, but they adjusted it, and it definitely looks better than before.
Then, there was one issue they pointed out to me. A piece of the plastic in the trunk space was coming out of place a little. For this, they didn’t have the part, but said that mobile service will be able to come fix it.
This experience with Tesla service was fantastic.
I drove away from the appointment, and of course noticed that the rear seats still buzz a little. I honestly think it’s a design flaw. The seats are now in alignment, but with the 60/40 split, the material rubs together anytime you hit a bump.
I also mentioned to Tesla service what I had heard on twitter and from Sandy Munro, that Tesla had recently added insulation pieces to the Model Y AC unit and heat pump. Tesla service confirmed that also within the last week, Tesla has made this fix official on the Model Y.
Once I have all of these fixed by mobile service, I think the car will be how it should have come. According to Tesla service, these Tesla Model Y production issues are common.

I am hopeful that most (if not all) of the issues you have faced will have been taken care of before next then! If not, I can handle a few of them, and look forward to my new wheels.

You're lucky to have someone call you daily. I've had mine since March and fortunately only had superficial issues. They have horrible communication skills/customer service. I've had 3 mobile service appointments and the guy that came was awesome. I brought the car to a service center once parts finally came to fix the paint issue. The lady that greeted me asked, "You've had this paint issue since you got the car... why are you just bringing it in now?" 😑. I said I put all the issues in the app, had three mobile service appointments, and just followed the instructions on the app. She then accused me of scraping the paint and that pissed me off so I got her supervisor to help me. I asked why would i want to damage a brand new 70k car?? He said he would have their body shop examine it. Turns out the paint didn't bond with the metal or whatever. She was nice from that point on. They postponed the eta 2x without telling me or updating the app. Friend that has a Tesla 3 and a LWD Y told me thats just how they are. The car runs great, I just hope I don't have to bring it in anymore. 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽

    Bought a model3 in July 2019.
Front bumper was damaged due to headlight change at factory (I live in Europe). Took 3 appointments and 9 months to get it replaced. It's pre painted...so now I have a noticeable color difference.
Headliner at the back was loose. Tesla didn't fix it correctly. Was fixed by my detailer.
Chrome trim piece was out of alignment. Got fixed in first appointment.
Charge port was way out of alignment. First response was 'within spec'. After some intense debates, it got fixed.
It took me 3 appointments and over 9 months to get everything fixed. Biggest problem, communication. Was in the dark about progress the whole time. No possibility to call and mails were unanswered.
Also took so long because of internal communication problems between Delivery and Service.
The car is great now. Drives like a dream and with the corrected paint (state was awful), it looks the part too.

This is exactly why I went and pre-ordered a Mustang Mach-E. I figure if I'm going to roll the dice amd pay $60k+ for a brand new model car, i am probably better off going with a company that has been building cars since forever, and has dealers all over the place to handle any concerns that crop up.
I absolutely love what Tesla is doing, I love that they pushed the auto industry to get off their ass and start building the types of cars consumers actually want to drive, but all of these quality control issues are a major no go for me, and I would be beyond passed having a laundry list of issues that long on a brand new $60k car! I mean that is just unacceptable.
Hopefully I'm not opening up an entirely new can of worms myself by being one of the first to adopt an EV from a company like Ford that has not been making EV's, but in my mind the tech stuff is likely fixable via software updates, and the actual "car stuff" is likely to be done right the first time by Ford since none of this is new to them.
Also what's with complete lack of analog buttons and knobs, and levers on the model 3 and Y?? I mean you need to use the display to open the glove box??? Common, thats just silly and overly complicated. Also what happens if the screen goes out and you have just the one display, no gages, no speedometer, nothing... That's just silly and overly minimalist in my opinion, and as much as i wanted to love the 3 or the Y, I just couldn't pull the trigger and live with these things so I'll take my chances with Ford.

People keep talking about Tesla like they're the Apple of cars. I've been saying for years that in reality they're the Blackberry of cars. Blackberry only made phones, and helped push phones that could do email and a bit of internet, more than just calling other phones. Then, companies like Apple, Samsung, etc that had been making electronics for years came and took the market. Blackberry sunk into a bottomless pit.
Tesla pushed the EV market, yes, but the cars are ugly, there are so many issues, and their boss is an absolute prick. When car manufacturers who know how to make cars take the market, we'll see if Tesla remains the highest traded car company for long...

Quality control isn't on the top of their list and a lot of American buyers are under the impression it's "normal" Paint is a good example of cost cutting. SERIOUSLY, Paint doesn't fall under "first year release" technical issues. Paint has been mastered by a lot of car companies for years now. Alignment? Really? I can understand computers throwing error codes, or panel adhesive issues on a first year model.. but paint and alignment is some stone age level quality control.

We have a problem with the rear seats, mainly the driver's-side seat will not fold down using the buttons in the back, unless you fold the right side first. Took it to Tesla service and they also told us they didn't have a fix yet. Didn't realize until I saw your video that, just like yours, our rear seats are also out of alignment. This may be causing the problem with the left side not folding down. Anyway, glad to see you got a fix; will try again with our service center and see if it can be fixed. Thanks for all you do!

I'm glad to hear your issues were finally handled. I have a 2018 Model 3 AWD long after the first 6 months of deliveries.... I had some minor issues. Nothing for paint. I didn't have anything with trunks or alignment issues. Some scuffs on trim and window of passenger rear side. A small triangle shaped trim at the passenger mirror stuck out and was loose. I had some software bugs with AC. I had after a while a crack in rear window at the defroster. Beyond that I had a very reliable experience. They do learn quickly and fix things. Some of this is based on the contractors making the parts and simply needed more QC before putting on a car. My service experience all in all has been good. I've heard others not so much but talking with other owners the local service center is above average. I love my car and after 45k miles in 1.5 years it's held up great. Not to mention my FSD computer swap went flawless in a couple hours and updated a few other things that didn't cause me any issues like charge port dead pins.
I'd still recommend a Tesla though preface any new model car or design change from any make will have issues. In general things do get fixed and as long as not by some rock or obvious damage usually under warranty and no cost to owner.

I have been watching your videos for some time and they have helped me through my journey of deciding to get a Tesla and deciding on the Model Y. I ordered a LR AWD in February and got the text that I could take delivery this month or delay it. I decided a last week to delay it until January of next year because of all these little issues that seem so common. Based on this video, I think I made the right decision.
It's informative and encouraging that Tesla is actually creating and changing parts to improve the "beta" version already. I am hopeful that in six months even more improvements and fixes will be delivered from the factory with better fit and finish.

Thanks Ryan for your videos. Very disappointing to hear that MY has all these initial problems. Great vid btw. Gives me things to double check on my MY. I got mine about 2 weeks ago and most of your issues are non-existent on mine. I do have the loud AC issue (isn’t audible inside but only outside when on full blast). I also had a loose cable coming out of my front-right wheel well. I schedule a mobile service and they came and fixed it within 10 min and the specialist was nice/timely. The front bumper is already chipped from one or two rocks and that’s pretty annoying. The place that tinted my window said they used cheap paint, hence why it chipped so quickly/easily. Besides those things, car has been awesome.

Ryan, I feel your pain. Sold my beloved Model 3 Performance after only 6 months of ownership. And this was a 2019 model. After 8 service appointments and visits to 2 different service centers, they couldn’t fix squeaks and rattles that plagued my car. I met with the store manager, the service manager and anyone that would listen to me. In the end they said the sounds were “too minor and within spec” - what a shame! Just like for you, a number of “fixed” issues had resurfaced for me. It turned out to be a very tiring and frustrating experience. I have a reservation for the Model Y but I’m wary about pulling the trigger. Really don’t want to find myself in the same situation. Glad things are better for you now and I hope they fix things for real.

Dude, this video is so helpful for me!! I will absolutely call them tomorrow and ask about the heat pump/AC thing. It's annoying to hear the AC being super loud. Another thing that I have been wondering: what's up with the car not having a pedestrian warning speaker? I love the fact that it's stealthy silent, but I have had people come bump into my car because they 1) aren't paying attention and 2) can't hear the car. I would love for them to retroactively put one in the car for the sake of my car not being damaged in the future because someone wasn't paying attention. ya know? Anyways, thanks dude for all you do with your videos! They are great.

Wow! Sorry to hear that you had so many problems with the model Y I was thinking about trading my model 3 for the model Y! Now I’m thinking maybe I should wait & see if some of these bugs/problems are actually fixed! I bought my model 3 back in 2018 & except for a few minor issues I haven’t had any real problems & the service has been pretty good too! That upper pillar issue you described was also a problem on my Model 3 & they were able to secure that without a lot of fanfare & the other issue was just some seals where the trunk lid comes together with the body of the car, just a simple glue job & the other issue was a seal on the passenger side door, again just another glue job no big deal there, so other than that the car has been really good! However, the problem I am having now is getting the over the air updates, because for whatever reason the car will not connect to my Wi-Fi, so I took it in to the service center & they didn’t really have an answer for that, but they were able to get the update to download & I was able to install it over LTE, which is the way they were doing it when I first got the car, so ever sense they made the switch to Wi-Fi, I’ve had no success in getting an over the air update via Wi-Fi & they don’t have an explanation as to why that is the case & 2 days after I got the update installed, I got a another notice for another update, so of course I attempted to installed it over Wi-Fi & again no cigar, so I’m headed back to the service center to find out what the hell is going on with this car! Luckily the service center is only about 14 miles away from my residence, however, it’s located in the adjacent state, so I have to cross a bridge & pay a toll to get there! Not happy about that either! I live in a city of nearly 1 1/2 million people & we have one supercharger located in the center of the city inside a pay parking garage & I don’t get that either! SMFH! 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ So I gave you 2 👍🏾👍🏾 up for content & quality & thanks for posting the video, hope to see you on the next one!😎

Your comments about the car ring true for most any first year production vehicle. I worked for various automotive companies from the mid sixties onward. While employed with Jaguar, I asked the lead engineer in charge of production at the the time why there are so many annoying problems with new cars (we just released the XJ6). His reply was very interesting. He told me that Jaguar would employ professional drivers to sort out possible defects. It was found that professional drivers were too sympathetic to the machinery. A change was made to incorporate members of the general driving public for testing preproduction models. It reduced complaints significantly.

Thanks so much for the video Ryan. We bought our Model Y over a month ago and are experiencing the frustration of making appointments, having Mobile Service to come, and going to the Service Center for all built quality issues with our car. Our car serial number is in the 38K one and Tesla still has not fixed all the reported issues. So far we have had issues with alignment between the glass roof and back trunk, causing the tail lights have moisture after driving shortly in the rain (Tesla didn't want to fix this until there is actual water staying inside the lights); driver door handle doesn't lack in completely (Mobile Service appt. fixed this); this week brand new issue is whenever we open the front passenger door, there is an annoyed squeaking noise. We looked at the door and its front edge (toward the bottom) was touching the front bumper edge. Therefore another appointment has been made for this. Hope this will be fixed at that appointment and hope for no more issue! Are we being punished for willingness to try something new from Tesla? We should have waited for another year!

So many traditional cars have issues kind of like this and we end up just having to live with them. We only see them make design changes when they're forced to through recalls. Now Tesla is kind of being forced to via customers, but they're actually making the changes and iterating on the designs at the factory as a result.
That being said, three months to fix those issues during COVID-19 is great. My '06 Mustang had the airbag recall (the letter pretty much said "we aren't offering alternative vehicles, just try not to crash until it's replaced"), 4 months later, my dealer said it was ready to replace and set up an appointment. I got to their service department, they told me they didn't have the part, 8 months passed with me calling weekly, and they never got the part. I ended up selling the car (disclosing the airbag recall) with it never being done. That's for a part that had no engineering changes for Ford and no service procedure changes for their techs.

Good to hear. I’m picking up my Y Sunday. The serial number is just shy of 13,000 and allegedly was built this week so I’ll check that all the HVAC insulators are installed. You remember I’m the guy who turned down March delivery due to questions over the trailer hitch. I’ll have to have that installed post delivery or via the aftermarket.
I guess things work out for the best after all.

Good that the most issues are done. Hope you get all other fixed by mobile service.
Yes you're right, it's always a beta you get from Tesla at the first factory output. Same would be with the Cybertruck or Semi, so I won't change my reservation on the Cybertruck to order in the beginning of delivery. I will wait as long as I can.

Picked up Pearl White AWD LR Model Y in Burbank on June 14th. Drove it home, and reviewed all the TH-cam Videos on Model Y deliveries. I have not had any of the problems that the earlier deliveries have had. I specifically noted all the issues and reviewed them on the car over the last week. I have driven about 350 miles in that time, specifically testing the navigation and control systems. I have not found any of the fit and finish issues noted in the earlier deliveries. I am very happy. Even the paint looks good.

You have definitely earned my subscription. Your reasonable attitude, intelligence, and persistence make you an ideal consumer advocate/reviewer. You're doing a great service for current and future Tesla customers. It would be interesting to know how many people rejected flawed Model Y's because your videos made them do better pre-acceptance inspections.
Tesla owes you big time, for the actionable feedback. I'm glad you mentioned Lemon Law and that you'd considered selling your new Model Y. This tells Tesla how serious these problems are. Your conclusion about Tesla delivering beta-quality cars feels like an accurate description. It's just what you'd expect from Musk, as he pushes the envelope to achieve his goals. As long as there are no safety issues, and as long as Tesla fixes these issues quickly, then maybe all the fanboy/girl buyers are okay with it.
    Thank you

As they ramp up production and models, the service centers ramp as well...wonder if the factories need to have a fit and finish shop that the cars go through before loading for shipment...including a track they run them around to test. Catching production issues they can tweak either with the robots or with humans performing certain tasks. I am impressed with the ‘learning curve’ they have though. They are pre-emptively fixing other things they are aware of across the board when these cars come in.

I received my Model S back in April of 2013. It was very early for an S60 with spring suspension. While I think your issues were more numerous and severe, I also had the experience of a not quite ready car. At the time, I knew I was buying from a not quite ready car company, and had no idea if they'd be in business this long! I'm still driving that Model S and still like it. Most of the little problems were fixed and I got to know one of the service managers pretty well 😁. I plan to buy a Model Y and get rid of the minivan to be all electric. I'd say, 7+ years later, despite the struggles, it is still a great car and I plan to keep it for a while.
