  • Putting Tesla’s Autopilot to the ultimate test in my Model Y: Bad Los Angeles Drivers! LA drivers are notoriously bad. They drive fast, get distracted easily, and are always trying to get everywhere faster than everyone else. Tesla’s Autopilot is cautious, and sometimes feels like a student driver, so how does it stack up?

I recently got the Full Self Driving or FSD update for my Tesla Model Y and Tesla Autopilot. Today, I’m putting it to the test. I drove across Los Angeles going from East LA to West LA with the purpose of putting Navigate on Autopilot to the test.
Tesla advertises Navigate on Autopilot as having the ability to drive you from freeway onramp to offramp all on its own. It has its quirks, but overall this feature does a great job with Auto Lane Changing doing especially well.
In this video I walk you through some of the good edge cases and the bad edge cases that I experience in my drives with Tesla Autopilot in LA.
You’ll see times when the Model Y does Phantom Braking. Times when the Model Y takes merges incredibly slow and angers drivers behind and around me. Also, there are a couple really close calls where Autopilot nearly gets in an accident, and I take over entirely. I’m glad it wasn’t an accident in one of those “Autopilot Accident” videos, and overall I’m glad that in general, Autopilot seems to do incredibly well.
Tesla’s Full Self Driving package includes:
    Auto Lane Change
    Autopark
    Navigate on Autopilot
Recognize and Respond to Traffic Lights and Stop Signs
    Summon
And soon: Autosteer on City Streets.

Good video. But I think you (and most people to be honest) spend to much time worrying about what the car is doing when it comes to distance in relation to other vehicles. Specifically side distances. The car is processing data at a rate that is impossible for a human to even come close to. Roughly 250fps that's one every 4 milliseconds. People have a typical reaction time of about 250 milliseconds possibly 200 with a Adrenalin spike. The car sees a frame to frame to frame change in 8 milliseconds. Say it takes another 20 or so to process a reaction. It is still at least 5 or 6 times faster than a human. My point? I would trust the car more than most humans.

You don't watch many auto reviews, do you? The 360 camera as a dashcam sort of thing is actually a very common feature right now. I remember it being in high-end Mercedes cars since about 2012. Obviously, it was then mostly used for the "top-down" parking view, not any self-driving capabilities, hence the high-end part. It was basically an expensive novelty with *fat* profit margins.

2:05 The Penske truck was encroaching into your lane and was going significantly slower than you. That was no phantom braking. That was keeping you safe. My assumption would have been that the truck driver either wasn't paying attention or he was intending on fully entering your lane. I would have been cautious approaching him as was your car. Maybe that’s the correct thing to do if he wasn’t driving in LA. It’s actually more dangerous here to drive defensively because you can get rear ended easily or get someone angry (ergo they start making irrational choices on the road). The best way to handle large trucks drifting into your lane is to check the the empty lane to your side, see if there’s no cars next to you. If there aren’t, drift into that lane a little and speed up to quickly pass the truck. You reduce the risk of hitting the truck AND reduce the risk of getting rear ended.

    • @boardriderz

Mr. Johnson in a split second decision breaking is always the right choice over swerving... always. It is the person behinds responsibility to travel a a safe distance whether you like it or not, and just because you live in a big, bad, busy city is no excuse. Once a majority of cars on the road are self driving, no one will make shit decisions and thus everyone will be orders of magnitude safer.

    • @nocare

@@mr.johnson8974 Tesla however shouldn't do that, simply the self driving car should just get rear ended if thats the case. It needs to drive within the rules no matter if the rules are more or less dangerous for the area of operation, first because of liability but second because a departure from the rule "for safety reasons" needs to be proven to be safer and that requires data.

As a Commercial Driver, that “phantom breaking” is actually noticing the cars drifting. I can tell what other drivers are thinking with that subtle drift when they are looking to merge left or right.
Human drivers don’t realize that they slightly drift when they look in their mirrors.
It takes a lot of practice and driving time to notice those little drifts, and why it is important to be attentive at all times while driving, and why being distracted for even a moment can create a catastrophe.
Also, most accidents happen because people don’t leave “2 seconds” of space between them and the driver in front of them and using your cell phone while driving.
No need to rush! You get to your destination quicker if you drive at a safe pace and in a safe fashion rather than driving in a way that will eventually need a “detour” to the hospital.
Also, trucks leave space in front of them because it takes a lot more time for them to stop.
Don’t be an idiot trying to get a insurance payout from brake checking a Truck.
That insurance payout will be going toward your funeral if you are lucky, and your lifetime vacation in a hospital bed with an equivalent IQ of a vegetable if you are not...
Drive like all the drivers are out to kill you, because some of them actually are.

don't think their engineers have done very much driving. Until all vehicles can communicate with each other in real time, no computer will be able to do what one old fat truck driver can do for millions of miles accident free. Every vehicle on the the road would have to have this tech and all the roads would have to be properly marked and maintained. It seems like their programming is thinking any idiot can do it just because the engineers do it. I mean they should probably be charged for attempted homicide just for getting on the road.I personally feel that if you are too damned lazy to assume responsibility for your vehicle then you don't belong on the road.

I felt (watching the whole video) that the auto pilot assures you'll be in the best spot if sh*t happens. It looked quite precautious dealing with most of the scenarios, even being pushed to some inconvenient situations. It pursues the best "chances" all around, not just "looking" at the nearest car. • @SDav21
      @SDav21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@TheRiptaco Just like a plane on autopilot, a car needs multiple sources for confirming a scenario. A plane has at least 3 sensors to determine its airspeed, trajectory and pitch. It takes the readings from all 3 to confirm. If one is faulty, but the other 2 shows a certain scenario, it uses the 2 that concur. Other carmakers, like Mercedes, use 2 forward facing cameras (stereo cameras) together with short, medium and long range radar (incorporated behind the the Mercedes star badge). It works together to rule out errors in instances where a camera doesn't provide enough information. Other carmakers restrict their systems more however as they are risk averse such that they follow laws very strictly especially to avoid people blaming their system versus themselves. Even a plane needs a pilot. Same like a car. Even if the carmakers activate all their cars' ability to drive itself a pilot is always required. Until laws change, until people are more educated, until there's universal standards on how autonomous cars should act in certain scenarios and how it will determine what is safe and/or courteous, these systems will remain merely as ASSIST systems to relieve strain off drivers on long journeys but still making sure they're fully present and attentive.

You'll notice that the speed that Autopilot takes 'sharp' turns seems to change from version to version. For the first 6 months I had my car it would constantly go too fast into hard corners and then freak out and disengage. The last couple versions they really slowed it down and seem to be putting an artificial 'speed limit' on turns where it previously would disengage. Unfortunately, it tends to hold that speed far longer than it needs to and doesn't accelerate out of the turn like a normal driver would. I suspect that since they've been clearly working on 'hard turning' issue that in the next few months you'll see them try to rectify the prolonged slowness once the vehicle starts to exit a turn.

I think the car’s response for the Penske truck was appropriate. Slowing down to get behind the truck puts you in a safer position than getting into another lane (while maintaining speed); it’s possible that the erratic truck driver would’ve changed lanes again just as easily, where you would’ve been just as close to a collision as you were before. Slowing down puts more distance between you and the truck.

However they add more restrictions due to being more risk averse until laws make it legal and until people are more educated. Teslas don't even have great pedestrian detection as shown by those videos where they compared it and they're not even stopping when there's a large over turned truck right in front of it. That to me sounds like tesla is lagging behind. There's even a channel called tesla guy or something like that. He shows the autoparking of the model 3. It is positively miserable. Cars from 7 years ago find and park better than tesla's efforts. Where does this thing about self driving come about that tesla is ahead??? Because they make more of it available in "beta" making people think it can do more than it can when it can't? That's dangerous and reckless. But that seems to be the tesla way. They do it for marketing and to fool the ignorant into thinking they drive themselves when they don't. Tesla owners and fans generally seem to know very little about other carmakers self driving. Mercedes even had a self driving car in the 90s with project prometheus. They've been collecting self driving data before tesla even existed. Even now, tesla doesn't sell cars in every country in the world nor do they sell enough of them to even build a proper data set. Other carmakers have self driving cars in every country in the world collecting data even in countries in Africa, India etc. Every country has different rules and people drive differently. Having a data set just from the US is not going to help them much.

On one occasion you were criticizing the follow distance for being too far behind the car in front of you even though the car was going 27 as you clearly drove past a yellow 20 mph sign. The first phantom breaking DOES have a reason. Go to 1:41, and you will see a white or silver car approach behind another car less than 1 car of spacing. It's anticipating a potential accident, and reducing speed to ensure it could come to a complete stop in case of a collision.

If your driving involves going east in the morning and west in the afternoon... it often gives up when there sun is too close to the road (high glare.) and the frequency of phantom events is much higher as well.

It breaks when ur car goes under a big overhead road sign, happens to me too. For a split second it reads it as a object and thinks it might cause a crash. The convolution also neural network needs more training data for these banners and bridges like situations where going under the object is fine.

The riding the outside on the lane on tighter highway turns drives me insane. Also, drivers usually take tighter turns on the inside, so me being on the outside and them on the inside, I've gotten way to close for comfort many times.

    Good video as usual!
I have experiencing that the car(model 3) is phantom breaking a lot, thats really annoying, especially at high speeds.
And roads without lines or merging lane are really scary!
Roundabout, gravel roads, snow or rainy days are still out of the question.

First phantom brake was probably picking up the long signs on top as traffic lights. I get phantom braked sometimes passing those road signs and ezpass equipments.

Just having Autopilot only and no FSD, the Phantom Braking I get is pretty scary, you explained it so well.

I completely agree about the frustration of phantom breaking. It happens way too often and quite frankly, it can be dangerous at times. Tesla really needs to figure out this problem and fix it.

Ryan, great video. I noticed that the phantom breaking or lane change hesitation you mentioned seemed to coincide with overhead street signs. Not sure if there is a correlation there, but maybe take note for future to see if that is indeed the case. It appeared to be in the video cuts I saw that most times when there was an issue, there was an overhead sign approaching.

Thanks! That does seem to be what most people are noticing so I'll be sure to pay attention in the future.

For "phantom braking" it's sort of a system glitch everytime you drive under a bridge or cross under large roadsigns the sensors assumes theres a barrier so it slows down slightly before the systems realize theres no barrier and starts accelerating.
Notice the correlation between the phantom braking and when theres an overpass or a roadsign that stretches over all lanes on the freeway

I am amazed bij how good the autopilot is doing its job while the road lines are so bad
I live in the Netherlands and for the most part our roads and road lines are very good.
but still i have sometimes ghost brakes in my Model 3

9:58 if you look in the video, just a few seconds after at 10:01, auto pilot is actually slowing you down to the recommended speed, and the sign off to the left of the screen for the ramp that your are turning on to.

Good video! The slowness/student driving the car chooses to do is honestly the reason why human judgment will always be needed.
