That transmission filter is unique in that it has two types of media. One type of media is finer in an attempt to actually filter the oil, not just strain it like you are referring to, which is all that has been done on previous transmission designs. By not dropping the pan, you miss the opportunity to wipe all the clutch steel wear material off the pan magnet. Having a clean magnet helps to keep the steel material out of the fluid. Also, the filter has its own built-in magnet. So you get a fresh magnet there as well if the filter is changed. If all you are doing is changing the oil, i would do it every 15,000 miles, i would also run it for a few minutes. Wish you would have shown what the fluid looked like on the second drain.

Ok im a bit dumb, so just to verify.
1.) you pump out as much oil fluid as you can.
2.) pump back in new fluid equal to what was pumped out.
3.) turn truck on, cycle through gears (approx 30 sec)
4.) repeat steps 1-3 until you've pumped in 13+/- quarts or until the fluid starts pumping out bright red.
5.) turn truck on, cycle through gears one last time, let truck idle and warm up, check level (see owners manual for recommended level).
    I got it down, correct?

Please remember the insanely long 'fluid change intervals' provided by the manufactures are strictly for the purpose of getting a credit from the EPA so Ford can say "We recommend at 7500 miles instead of 5,000 miles, so over the life of 100k miles, You will change the oil 13 times in 100k miles, versus 20 times at 5,000 miles, so Ford 'saved' 7 oil changes aka 35 quarts of oil, and the EPA gives them a credit for said fake 'savings'. Turbocharged vehicles are 5k miles on Synthetic, period. Transmission fluid is at 60k with NO towing, or 30-45k with light/medium towing. There is no arguing or other option. There is a reason they only do 60k powertrain warranties, because even if you change the oil every 10k miles, the cams/journals/etc will still last a minimum of 60k miles, but you will be screwed before you ever reach 100k. If you plan on keeping your vehicle for any decent amount of time, and also want a bulletproof service record if you ever want to sell it later, which equals no haggling on the price you set, then Change your fluids often, and KEEP THE RECEIPTS IN A FOLDER. With todays technology take a quick picture of you under the truck, print out the photos, put them in said folder as well, be sure to take a picture of the dash with current mileage each time. Hell take an entire video and keep them on a separate external hard drive so there is no doubt. Enjoy 😎
    End of exceedingly long essay~

I wouldn’t recommend measuring. You are only ensuring you get it back to where it was. Was it at the correct level to begin with? I have heard too many stories about transmissions not begin filled correctly to feel good about recommending that method.
Taking a picture of the level at the start is a good suggestion as long as you are certain to duplicate temperature. Temperature will greatly affect fluid level.

Could you break into the transmission fluid lines, set the outgoing (to cooler) line to drain into a bucket, and provide a supply of fresh fluid to the return line so that all the old fluid could be cycled out? We do it this way on our Toyotas.

    • @bennieaust
