My 2018 F-150 Platinum has been shifting extremely abnormally and has exhibited the same “jerking” feeling you talked about. I bought it used and was really hoping the adaptive learning had just gotten used to the previous owner. Since Ford wouldn’t re-flash it for me and wanted to charge me $300 and keep the truck for two weeks…I decided to disconnect the battery terminals and drain any residual juice by touching them together. So far the Truck is driving like brand new and the Transmission is shifting like butter! I hope this keeps up. Oh and always let your car/truck come to a complete stop before shifting!
What are you mean about the “Drain any residual juicy by touching them together”PLEASE 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 explain me PLEASE. I need to do that. I have the same problem
I have a 2019 F150 XLT with the 10R80. It does the jerking thing between 3rd & 4th gears. It was doing the jerking between Park and Reverse, but I alleviated that by shifting into Neutral, setting the Parking brake, letting out on the brake pedal allowing it to settle into the parking brake and then shifting into Park. Have not had the jerking issue since. It still jerks between 3rd & 4th every once in a while, but not often.
I've got the 4th - 3rd jerking too. Only on downshifts, and only from cold starts... Never had the park/reverse jerking. I talked to Ford service and they told me they're booked out 6 months on transmissions. The dude at service also told me that this transmission is shit, right to my face! 🤦♂
Hi there, I just wanted to say thank you for your helpful video. I too have a 2017 raptor that had the identical shifting issues you described. I followed your lead and utilized the access port you recommended. My truck now shifts smoothly and drives great! Gone is that annoying jerk when shifting from P to D. Thanks for your help and thanks to Cobb. (No thanks to Ford….)
I just bought a 2022 5.0 with less than 12,000 miles on it. My transmission hasn't been shifting the smoothest. I read somewhere that you can unhook both battery terminals for 15 minutes and it resets the transmission. I did that last night, and so far it's shifting super smooth. Hopefully it keeps up!
@@charlierichter3832 investigate "Forscan". Using Forscan you can clear the transmission learning tables and disable the learning transmission. This has made a huge difference. It still has a hard shift here and there, but it's WAY better than it was. You can also turn off the start stop feature if you so desire so you don't need to push that button everytime you drive your truck.
@@jakesgr8sakiorjoe58 @charlierichter3832 So I have an F150 not a Mustang, but I believe they are the same transmission. I am in no way a mechanic, but this is what I've found. This transmission has an "adaptive learning" function. This seems to be what's causing the issues. Do some investigating on "Forscan". It's a free download, you'll just need to buy an adapter to connect your laptop to your OBD 2 port. With Forscan you can clear the adaptive learning tables, and more importantly you can pause or just disable the adaptive learning altogether. This is what I have done and it has improved the shifting a solid 90%. The other thing I've found (with mine at least) is this transmission is finicky when it's cold. It shifts hard from 1st to 3rd in morning when it's cold. So I need to drive slowly down my driveway in the morning and it doesn't do that. Also, don't use sport mode before it warms up. It does NOT like sport mode when the transmission is cold. Like I said, I'm not a mechanic but this is what I've found with mine. Forscan is a very useful tool. There are a bunch of other things you can do with it. Just search for it on TH-cam, there are a bunch of videos on it. Good luck and keep me posted.
My son has a 2017 Raptor in the shop getting the tranmission replaced because of that hard shift from P to D 10,000 to replace it. If I would have seen your video first it would have saved us lots of trouble. Thk
How many miles did your sons make it? My 2017’s went out at 56,000 miles. New tranny still feels rough sometimes, gonna try this COBB to see if it helps.
Mine's in the shop now getting a new valve body assembly. It would shift into 2nd so hard it would bark the tires. It was also doing some other wonky stuff... I've found myself driving by Dodge and Toyota dealerships late at night, that aren't even on the way home... (update) After 3 months and 2 different dealers with no signs of a fix, I traded it while in the shop on a 21 Pro 4x....another 2 months later I got a "thank you for your recent visit to our service dept" letter from yet another Ford dealer that I can only assume ended up fixing the steaming hunk of 10 speed Sh!t. In short, the fix is : Sell it, cut your losses and spend your money on another brand. Ford's crack can grow together as far as I'm concerned!
Any update? My ‘19 king ranch is a total mess; with the fist - third hard shift, sometime a shift down to first from 4th, 5th or 6th and sometimes a hesitation between gears, like a miss shift.
I have a 17 Raptor also I have had my oil pan replaced 3 times all under warranty of course and I have had to have my transmission reflashed twice. Miss my Gen 1 Raptor everyday but I don't miss the fuel economy Gen 1 got about 9.5 MPG when I got rid of it at 135k & my Gen 2 @ 65k is still getting 15.5 so obviously I'm going to keep it. Great looking truck man I'm good to content.
You are just adorable! Thanks for the video & detailed explanations. I have an older Lariat Crew Cab that I bought to tow a little boat for my sons & all the times when a lady needs a truck! Mine also does this "jerking" that is so annoying and has been very misdiagnosed thus far by two local shops.
Had this same issue with my 2020. Every time I came to a stop it was like being rear ended. Reflashed it a few times over a few thousand miles, went with 5 star tuning, still no help. Ended up selling it and now am happy in a gx460. Sucks because I LOVED everything else about that truck.. glad it worked for yours at least.
Oh great. 2021 and this one is doing it what an awful transmission what am I going to do with this. It feels like someone pumping the brakes continuously. I'm absolutely disgusted with this and ford
2020 mustang with the same transmission mine feels like im being rear ended when coming to stop too. So far reflashed for 3rd time its getting worse tbh.
My 2017 Raptor (38,338 miles) has been to the Ford dealer 3x now for transmission issues. Staying in gear, heavy jerking, vehicle going into D & shutting off. They have retuned the trans & other little stuff, but doesn’t seem to last long. It’s been there for 3 weeks now, waiting to be worked on the 27th. Now, if they have to order parts, it has to wait.... Same thing, can’t get a loaner vehicle until they know. It’s an absolute nightmare & Ford needs to take ownership of their transmission problems.
@@mnstrbrndn my 21 expedition is doing the same thing I can be going 75-80mph on 3rd gear, a/c cuts out & Coolant smell leaks into the cabin . But no appointments for 2 months now. I don’t even trust the truck for family trips anymore
@@ImDead1nside Late update: ford replaced my transmission & it lasted about 5k miles. Started doing it again, & ford bought my Raptor back. I special ordered an F150 Tremor & just got it in last week lol.
I always thought my 19 f150 with 10 speed felt weird, now I know it’s not normal. Thanks for the helpful info! Can you give us an update video on how you feel about the new infotainment system soon?
I just got a used 2019 2.7 10speed. Drives great overall, 111k miles and did some recon before I purchased and it had new turbos put in at a previous dealership 10k miles ago. I do notice my 4 to 3rd gear shift is a little hard, all other shifts are fine, responsive but yea that one bothers me
2022 2.7 STX with 4200 miles already has transmission issues. 6th to 5th downshift about throws you through the windshield. Shuddering badly in 7, 8, 9 and, 10 while pulling small hills on the highway. The rest of the truck is great but that transmission is truly a deal breaker. These trucks do not live up to the hype. F150 buyers beware.
Mine did the same shit with the 6-5 downshift, there would be this clunk when slowing down. They overhauled the valve body, and now it’s excellent, almost like a new truck. Annoying
My truck does the same thing, more noticeable in the mornings. P to D the whole truck wants to jump forward. Super annoying. I’ve noticed if you depress the shifter ALL the way before moving it it help? But it still jumps most of the time. Also noticed the big lurches in shifting for me are only up to fifth or down from fifth, other gears don’t jump at all. Super annoying.
This is so helpful I have a 2019 5.0 with the same exact problem . The computer shows trans issue and I was worried it would be something worse I’m hopping restarting it takes care of the problem since I’m 66 k in so I have no power Tran warranty. And I also had my oil pan replaced at 45 k miles with the same issue
That’s the main reason I got rid of my 2019 150. Hate that transmission. 3 rd and 4 gears were terrible and made the engine valves sound like a diesel. Went to a 2017 with a 6 speed tranny. Smooth as glass.
Also, the problem I have seen and I’ve only seen research videos from TH-cam people who tune their engines and start messing with gear ratios and everything like this is when you start having problems I’ve had my truck now for five years and not one issue still running smooth as a day. I drove it off the lot with 17 miles on it.
Now I am concerned. I just purchased a 2020 with out my normal "over thinking" research; a VERY atypical for me impulse buy. I mean come on... Ford's bread and butter and they shoot themselves in the foot. Will have to see how it goes... Thanks for the video.
I had a 2021 mustang ecoboost with 10 speed auto, from 0-7k miles, no jerkiness. Just bought a 2020 mustang ecoboost with 10 speed auto at 15k miles...when I shift from park, neutral, or reverse, INTO Drive or Sport, it JERKS the car forward with a big clunk too
2020 5.0 at 30k miles with no issues. The transmission isnt always the smoothest when cold but once its up to temp, its buttery. I noticed when i bought it used at 17k that the tranny wasn't smooth until it learned my driving habits around a month later. If your truck has multiple drivers or you just arent a smooth or consistent driver, your tcm will never catch on.
Man wish i could meet you i think you can solve this prob faster than the dealer, im not a techie or mecanical type of guy so sometimes is hard to solve my mechanical problems.
My 2018 started out like this. I did all that stuff. Well it wouldn't shift into 2nd at all and the wrench warning light came on. Long story short no matter what you do it won't 'fix' it. $8900 just left my house for a new transmission. It's coming, start saving.
i'v got a 22 mustang gt premium the 1 to 3 shifts annoy the hell out of me the more and more i learn about the 10r80 and the 5.0 the more it makes me want to trade the car in 😮💨
I had that jerking motion in my 2019, I wasn't a fan of how it skipped gears when up and down shifting. I got the COBB AP and had a custom tune from Goosetuned on both the ECU and TCM and what a night and day difference it's been. The truck finally shifts through all gears whether up or down shifting, and the torque is insane.
@@marcoperez4712 I'm not 100% sure but you can expect between 60 to 100 rwhp from the tune. I have mine at a custom E93 tune, where I use 31 gallons of 91 and 5 gallons of E85. Its easily the best mod for your money as you notice the power gains right away.

Get used to it. It only gets worse. Downshifting 3/4/5 is brutal. After some time you will experience the same issue with downshifting to 8th. Hate this transmission. Dealer will only say it's not able to reproduce. Oddly, mine also clunks when I start the truck and sometimes when shifting in to reverse.
@@carminesc try resetting the tables with forscan it actually helped for a little and if you ask a ford tech, they can remove adaptive tables completely. Im yet to do the removing of the tables just because they charge $200
I have a 2019 F150 and I have not experienced that with my 10R80 that’s actually pretty smooth and they actually skip gears depending on how you’re driving and how fast you’re going so you can hit seventh gear or 10th gear really fast

How’s the trans running since the flash? Another video I watched, the guy took it into the master tech and the tech turned off “adaptive learning” so therefore the trans isn’t trying to learn your habits. He says that problem solved the shitty jerking for him. Maybe that’s what this group of F150’s need? I have a ‘21 3.5Eco F150 and I’m cautiously happy to say no issues with the jerky trans. Purchased new in Oct 21 it has about 17k miles on it. Really hoping I got the one that was built right.

@@varmint223 I think there was an update at some point of ownership maybe they flashed it. My 21 is butter smooth too. I personally don’t look or care what gear the truck is in, except when towing, so I couldn’t even tell if either pick up shifts frequently. The only time I’ve ever “felt” a shift, like something hard, was in -20 or colder weather with my 17’s first shift of the day would be considered hard. I attribute that to a cold transmission though and everything would be smooth after that. I’ve owned 4 f150s. 09, 15, 17 and now a 21. My experience has been great. Sometimes I think maybe some people are a lot pickier than me when it comes to certain things or maybe they just have a shitty truck!

Strange characteristic from Ford, with these transmissions. Im a service advisor for Cadillac, and our Cadillac’s with the 10L80 don’t seem to be having these issues. Not yet, so far… I wonder if the tuning is really the issue??? I believe the valve body’s are different. I have a 2019 Mustang premium GT with 10R80. Let me tell you, it is a horrible transmission. The Cadillac variant is much smoother you don’t even feel the shifts! I know, I know, the older Escalade with the 8 speed trans had a lot of issues with shudders and bucks, but the 10 speed is the cake for Cadillac and GM. Don’t understand how Ford got this wrong?!?!?

I agree. I have a 15 and a 19. The 15 with the 6 speed seems like Ford got it all perfected. Then the 10 speed seems like they just threw a bunch of gears in a case and hoped it would work. The 15 feels like a better built truck overall, as well.

My 2017 Raptor transmission only lasted 56k miles before going out
My son has a 2017 Raptor in the shop getting the tranmission replaced because of that hard shift from P to D 10,000 to replace it.
Was at a Toyota dealer a few weeks ago for a recall on the 4Runner. Six cars on the lot, what is there to drive by?!?
My ‘08 CRV was shifting pretty hard. Reset the TCM by holding the gas down with the ignition set to on. Shifts buttery smooth now
Had this same issue with my 2020.
Just bought a 2018 Raptor and thought...crap, this thing is broken. Thanks for making this video and I'll be ordering a Cobb today.

@@JesusF150I know it’s been two years, did you fix it?
My 2017 Raptor (38,338 miles) has been to the Ford dealer 3x now for transmission issues. Staying in gear, heavy jerking, vehicle going into D & shutting off. They have retuned the trans & other little stuff, but doesn’t seem to last long. It’s been there for 3 weeks now, waiting to be worked on the 27th. Now, if they have to order parts, it has to wait.... Same thing, can’t get a loaner vehicle until they know. It’s an absolute nightmare & Ford needs to take ownership of their transmission problems.

I always thought my 19 f150 with 10 speed felt weird, now I know it’s not normal. Thanks for the helpful info! Can you give us an update video on how you feel about the new infotainment system soon?
Will do!
I got 19 F150 too and have the same weird hard shift from 4th to 5th gear. Is that from Dearborn factory too?
@@johnsky1986 did you fix it??
@@johnsky1986 What's the status of your shifting issue? Mine does the same thing.
Annoying
@@tim9817what did the overhaul include?
Turn off the adaptive “learning” on the transmission
@@toxicmasculinity6246 i did this and it’s still shifting hard 😞😞
@@cloudnine9293guess I need to lean toward the “old” Tundra vs these newer F150s
My 2021 f150 5.0 at 400 miles started going BANG! From 3 to 2. Yay.
That’s the main reason I got rid of my 2019 150. Hate that transmission. 3 rd and 4 gears were terrible and made the engine valves sound like a diesel. Went to a 2017 with a 6 speed tranny. Smooth as glass.
How did U get the 6 speed programmed with out a computer hickup?
Also, the problem I have seen and I’ve only seen research videos from TH-cam people who tune their engines and start messing with gear ratios and everything like this is when you start having problems I’ve had my truck now for five years and not one issue still running smooth as a day. I drove it off the lot with 17 miles on it.
Now I am concerned. I just purchased a 2020 with out my normal "over thinking" research; a VERY atypical for me impulse buy. I mean come on... Ford's bread and butter and they shoot themselves in the foot. Will have to see how it goes... Thanks for the video.
How’s it going?
My 2017 Raptor’s transmission only lasted 56k miles before it went out. New one still shifts terribly lol
@@colbyblackwell6189 sorry for delay. About to trip 30k. Seems to function correctly, smooth / "appropriate" shifts. See how it goes.
I had a 2021 mustang ecoboost with 10 speed auto, from 0-7k miles, no jerkiness. Just bought a 2020 mustang ecoboost with 10 speed auto at 15k miles...when I shift from park, neutral, or reverse, INTO Drive or Sport, it JERKS the car forward with a big clunk too
I have a 2018 GT and it has the jerk and the clunk as well. Were you ever able to find a solution? Mine only has 20k on it today.
Why is it that ford always has to have transmission problems?
I have a 27-year-old Toyota and I don't even know I have a transmission in there
2020 5.0 at 30k miles with no issues.
The only place that transmission should be is the junkyard! $80,000 trucks should not have a single issue! Complete garbage!

Good to hear. A custom tune is probably next on my list.
How much more hp and torque from goosed tunes, im thinking of getting one as well.

The only time I’ve ever “felt” a shift, like something hard, was in -20 or colder weather with my 17’s first shift of the day would be considered hard.

You have to teach it how to shift to your style ! If you lend your track to anyone .. it needs to relearn how they drive .
Have a 2019 Raptor Supercrew and had a new transmission and cooler with new lines installed around 27,xxx miles. They installed all the latest software.
It ran great for about 1200 miles then on the highway it felt like the transmission was going to come through the floorboard.
Back to the Dealership, they said it was a little overfilled so they drained a little.
It drove and transmission shifted like butter for about another 1,xxx miles now this evening coming home on the highway in manual the transmission would pause for a second and the shift to the selected gear.
I'll see what happens in the next few days and may disconnect the battery 🔋so it can relearn shifting strategy. If that doesn't work then it's trip number three back to the Dealership for transmission related issues.

No, just pulling the battery doesn’t work. You have to wipe the learning tables with something
@@ZeroToAwesome there's videos of people putting it into neutral, turn engine off, wait 20 sec, turn it on, put in park, and blah blah.... that isn't a reset?
BTW, thank you for your video and response.. it's helping a bunch of us out here.
@@StarD435 If it’s free I’d give it a shot! But if it doesn’t work look into forscan. Way cheaper and it works:

Omgggg my 2020 f150 is doing the same thing!
Dang, sorry. I would’ve hoped they’d have fixed it by now
Nope, can’t get into a shop.. if they can get it in they have no rental cars..
Where are u located ? Ford wants 250$ diagnostic fee wtf. I almost ran through a stop sign because my truck wouldn't stop
Thats great but, its should just work in the first place.... idk why they thought it was a good idea to work with GM on a transmission.... my 2019 F150 5.0 is at 50k miles and its getting worse and worse. Still have 10k left on factory warranty... wish I wouldve just kept my 16 F150 3.5L... too much money for this BS and then they dont even wanna give you a loner
Wait ´til you have to replace the trans. And guess what IF they warranty it you may wait months for a replacement because SO many are failing.
This is a perceived issue. Wonder what transmission longevity looks like between Ford time and Cobb tune? What mile simulation testing has been done by Cobb?
You’d have to be an extremely unique person to not perceive the issue. All you need the tuner to do is wipe the tcm’s memory. You can put it straight back to ford tune if you want
Is this something that has to stay hooked up to maintain programming or can it flash and be removed? I wondered about buying one, flashing and fixing the issue, then selling it
Flash and remove but it’s keyed to your truck unless you uninstall the tune. It’d be worthless to someone else
What kind of stereo head unit does this truck have. Anyone know??
Phoenix px6. I took it out:
