      Just did this maintenance myself a couple weeks ago (2018 F-150 5.0L).
      I was searching this channel before doing the maintenance.

      Ford claims this maintenance interval is 150,000 miles!!?
      Did mine at 40,000 miles.
      Do you recommend pan drop & filter change every 30k?

      Unless you tow frequently going to 50k for this service seems reasonable. I checked my fluid at 30k and it looked pretty good.

      I had the confidence to buy an older 5.4 3V because his videos are so awesome. I was going to get a GM, but the LS engine is the only thing good about them. The interiors in particular really suck. They fall apart bad.

      @@JimBronson man, GM has been such complete garbage for the longest time, but their newer vehicles arent so bad.. i think they may be doing a turnaround. though the entire truck culture of GM is pretty horrible. some kind of masculinity crap. but their full sized trucks and suv's are the only interesting they make

      If you aren't changing the filter you can just suck the old fluid out the fill hole. Won't get the magnet clean but better than nothing

    Makes me even more appreciative of the comparative simplicity of servicing my 2011 Screw FX4 F150 5.0L 6R80. Early on I installed a proper trans dipstick and drain plug on mine.100,000+ miles with lots of RV towing with multiple trips to Texas, Alaska etc. And still looks and runs like new.

      I added a drain plug and dipstick tube to the tranny pan on my 2014 Mustang GT so my future changes will be a lot more easy.

    So I am in agreement with most comments I see here. This looks a bit much for a do it your self job. But I just called my shop. They said. 3.5 hours total cost for material, parts, and labor $585.00 So for that kind of $$ I think I will set aside an entire day in my driveway and make sure I don't mix up anything. This video is a great step by step. I just hope I don't mess something up.

    I was just at a ford dealership getting an oil change and I asked what the fluid change interval is for the 10r80 and they said they don't recommend fluid changes. I am so glad I looked more Into it because I will be following the recommended mileage in the video. Thanks again for the great info.

    I just did a fluid flush and filter change on a 4R75 in an E-series. Piece of cake compared to this truck. Nothing in the way at all. I like to pull off the cooler return line up at the radiator first, start the engine and let it pump out most of the fluid into a bucket. As soon as the fluid starts sputtering, shut off the engine so the pump doesn’t run dry. The pan comes off without a waterfall and flood of fluid. Clean it, change the filter, put the pan back on and dump in five quarts or so of fluid. Leave the cooler line disconnected, start the engine and run it through the gears as it pumps the old fluid into the bucket. Repeat this flush procedure a couple times until the fluid is coming out clean. Hook up the cooler line, top off the fluid and it’s perfect. Really gets it flushed out if you don’t have a machine that connects into the cooler lines. The only downside on an E-Series is the long dipstick tube smears full of fluid when adding, so it has to sit awhile to drain down and get an accurate measurement. Nice work!

      There had been a long controversy about whether to flush or drain/fill. I have flushed fluid every 30k miles on all of my vehicles for many years to get the best fluid exchange. Knock on wood, but I’ve never had a problem, nor have I ever had a transmission failure. There are many automotive questions that are debatable - oil change intervals, proper vehicle storage, undercoating, maintenance schedules, hand wash vs. auto car wash...it goes on and on. Do whatever works for you.

      BTW - This 4R75 transmission has 150k miles on it. I haul materials all the time with that van and tow a trailer on occasion. Still works great. Even if it crapped out tomorrow because of this flush procedure, it has served me well.

    Just did the filter and fluid on my 2018 3.5EB with max tow package, so I have a cooler, too. It was frustrating as hell until I dropped the sway bar. Much easier then! You rock Makuloco!

    I just did this service on my 2019 F-150 with the 5.0L after servicing the transfer case, and it took my all afternoon. I ended up using around 5 1/2 quarts, probably because I haven’t touched the filter since my truck was at 29.6k. I did accidentally overfilled it by pumping 6 quarts and it was above the desired mark. Luckily, I corrected the problem after about 10 miles of driving. All I can say is, if I hadn’t watched this video, then I would be struggling with this big time.

    Thanks so much for this video. It was the primary source I used to do my first trans service today on my F-150. I do not think I would have attempted it without really great detailed content that this video exemplifies. I do want to say that I attempted to remove the pan on my 2018 5.0 without jacking up the trans, and luckily it wiggled right out. It actually came out easier than the heat shields even without making extra room like you did--just took some finagling. Being able to skip that one step definitely saved some time and aggravation no doubt (considering I chose a rainy day to do this in my gravel driveway!). Mine also took 7.5 quarts of the ULV and I put in a Raybestos filter that came with the gasket for considerably less than the Motorcraft part. The only cooler line seals I could find were made by Dorman, but they worked just fine for me. I can say with zero doubt that I would much rather have done this inside, with a lift, and with a nice pump to get the fluid in. I used a little hand pump (like a soap dispenser with a hose) and that took quite a while, though it did the job. Thanks for all the great tips in the video and I'll be using more of our content. My pickup has 125k and I hope to double that!

    One of reason i about stopped buying new vechicles....having to do all the expensive maintence...like this...Ford and other add coolers....but install exhaust pipes and coverters near the transmission..it really gets hot in stop and go driving...in towns etc...and cooks fluid....great video...enjoy all your helpful knowledge

      @Greg B Ya, well I was kind of lucky on my timing. I bought my 2018 "new" in March of 2019, it had been sitting on the dealers lot quite awhile. I did quite a bit of homework on all the Ford engines, so I became aware of the 5.0L issues. Lucky for me cause the previous generation 5.0L with the 6 speed tranny is a good solid setup, so I had been considering it till I found out about it's problems.

    Can't thank you enough for another great video sir! To attempt to give something back here (for all the great information provided over the years especially considered); after deciding I really didn't want to have to unbolt and jack up the rear of the transmission each time I had to do this service, after a bit of messing around I rather miraculously discovered that with about 20-30 lbs of force at the end of an 18" breaker bar, wedged between the drivers side exhaust hanger (right behind the pan), and the adjacent flange on the trans mount, this provides literally JUST enough clearance to slide the pan out / forward. End of a standard breaker bar happens to nestle in this space perfectly to note, though you could use any other pry bar that fits of course. Do not need to actually bend anything - just need to have the hanger flex down a bit while jiggling the pan forward. Hope this is helpful to folks; I sure was very happy to learn this one! Still had to drop the roll bar for oil cooler clearance, but that's really not that bad of job - bolts right back up again easily afterwards. Still miss my screw on filters and drain plugs naturally here folks this all being said....

    Great video. I did my t-case and diffs recently and was contemplating doing coolant and trans soon. Very timely information, thank you (2018 F-150, 5.0) you definitely confirmed I don't want to try this in my driveway for sure. Will get the supplies and "borrow" a friend that has a lift to help me get this done. Got a little over 70K on mine so I want to get it done soon.

    I would like to say that , instead of disconnecting battery terminal .
    Instead remove starter relay , this will prevent accidental cranking. And you will not lose memory settings.
    All newer vehicles use a starter relay .
    Also great way to crank / turn crankshaft without power too coils and fuel injectors . To perform compression test etc .

      @Inverse Universe Actually Ford has a failsafe, the remote start won't function if the hood is open. So as long as you don't fully close the hood, you don't have to worry about accidental remote starts.

    This channel is the reason I decided to buy a very low miles 14' F150 instead of the new stuff. My 14' has the 5.0 and 6r80 which I believe is the best combo for work. Both, trans and engine have metal pans and the body is the last year for actual steel. Cherry on top is that it runs on E85 and regular. Corn fuel is $2.29/gal and 87 octane is $3.99/gal as of today.

    Just completed mine last night after it went into limp mode in a busy intersection with my rig being towed behind. The fluid looked pretty thin when I drained it (about 5 quarts from the pan) I hope this cures my shifting issues. Thanks for the great tutorial buddy..it saved me a headache. I'm about to continue and fill and test the levels now.

    this is an excellent video. If you endeavor to take this on, follow Brian’s very detailed instructions. Just did this on my 2018 5.0 F150 at 38k miles, and glad I did. Not sure that the 10R80 trans and Gen III Coyote is the best that Ford has put out, so a little preventative maintenance gave me a lot of peace of mind. As someone who enjoys working on cars, I will say this is a tall order for even the well experienced and well tooled DIY mechanic. Definitely doable, but a full afternoon of bloody knuckles and greasy transmission fluid (no matter how neat you try to be). The biggest pain for me was jacking the transmission in order to get enough clearance to remove the pan, and dialing in the fluid levels at the end next to a very hot catalytic converter.

      @@michalp2362 I don’t have a lift, unfortunately… I do have some beefy 22-ton jackstands which helped give me a little more room. Got as much fluid out as I could with a vacuum pump, but it was still a messy job.

    I bought a 2017 F150 a little over a year ago. The truck has a 6R 80 and just passed 30K miles. I did a drain and fill and added Dormant pan with a drain plug to make it easier in the futer. The trans. shifts like butter. I thought I would have liked to have had a 10 speed trans. but now think I doged a bullet!

      I had a 2017 10 speed it was amazing,behind the 3.5L engine, what a great towing combination .Dealer offered me too much for it so now I have a 2020 3.5 w. a 10 speed and it too is a beast.

    This is crazy! An Engineer got paid for this design? Is that a plastic trans pan? You would think they would create a flange on each side of the exhaust pipe to take it out so you can access the pan all the way. I bet you this is a $800 job. Thanks for the video.

      I would agree on the cost. I'm buying parts now, and without fluid, I'm over $100. Guessing close to another $100 in fluid depending on what brand I buy..

    Great video, Superb detail and tips. Thank you for taking the time to video and share it! I will be doing this to my 2020 5.0. I think before I put it up on my lift I'm going to take the pressure washer (lightly) to the transmission around the pan and line brackets and such so things are nice and clean before hand! Boy these design engineers should have to be mechanics first, These types of task's would be MUCH more simple.

    Thanks for making these videos so I can learn more about the F150 I own (and teaching me I have no business trying to fix it). Man, the simplicity of Toyota is making more and more sense to me even if its less MPG and less power. I don't think I'd want to own the complexity of a new F150 for more than say 40K-50K miles.

    Added my fluid back to center of B hash when I done mine. Transmission whined so loud it sounded like a damn supercharger and it ran high temp. I added another .75 qts to it to the upper A hash and it's completely quiet now! And shifting better!

      I do most of my service due to the fact that I worked in a dealership with a Collision Center where I was a painter.
      I know for a fact that some (not all)
      Don’t do everything they should when a vehicle is in for service.
      Example- Caravan tune up, rear plug’s almost never get changed cause it’s extremely difficult to change them out.
      There isn’t a wrench or socket that gets in where you need it.
      I struggled for a few hours one Saturday in the shop, on a hoist.
      Monday morning I talk to a few mechanics and asked them how in the hell do they do it, the 3 I asked said they don’t even try cause it’s so difficult!
      It’s crucial they do cause at 100klm the rust into the head and are extremely difficult to remove without pulling the motor.
      In a nut shell, I don’t trust most mechanics!

    Outstanding video! I bought a 2019 F150 with the 3.5L ecoboost and this knowledge is awesome. I mean, right down to the torque specs. This is one of those jobs I could/would do but I'd also plan more than 44 minutes. :-)

      Don’t know if you got an answer but the mustang has a couple metal pans available. As for drain plugs, the composite pan and plastic plug work very well. I’ve seen a few people think a metal version of the plastic plug is better… it’s not. Mixing metal and “composite” (fancy plastic) causes issues due to conflicting expansion rates. You’ll see that metal plug fire off and you’ll oil down the road.

      @@honestabe7349 Yes, that is with filter change. Just ask them to do it. Same with rear diff, ask them to pull cover off and clean it out. Not just fluid exchange.

    As always great video, I have a 2021 Ranger with the 10 speed, and the cooler is nothing like that they changed it and it's out of the way looks like the pan is a straight drop down . Thank you

    I work at the factory that makes these. We put the gasket on with trans fluid on the surface. I expressed concern and they assured me it was ok.

      ZF designed transmission is probably one of the best Ford ever used. My 5.4 4R75 is ok, at the times I feel like it doesn't have enough range for torque putting out by 5.4 3V.

      I have the ZF 6 speed manual in my F-250, that's just removing the fill plug, pulling the drain plug, waiting for 30 seconds, reverse that but add ATF before putting the fill plug back in. Everything is wide open under there and easy to service--another reason it's a shame nobody builds a truck with a proper transmission anymore.

      @@craigg4246 I disagree. I've never have any issues replacing spark plugs in my 2010 model year 5.4 3V (The spark plug problem was fixed by then). Good point for earlier ones though.

    1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear, Over Drive gear, Lock-up torque converter.
    That is the _most_ a passenger vehicle needs.
    I went through Ford's 'ASSET' program in the eighties and retired from wrenching in 2009. I don't miss it for a second.
    I work on my own rig(s) and no-one else's. (unless she's really cute (because some lessons are never learned))

    Big thanks for all these videos! QUESTION: I have a 2019 Raptor at 32K miles. I would like to just do a fluid exchange on my own then do the pan drop/filter at 60K; would it be worthwhile to extract the old fluid out, without dropping the pan and re-fill rather than dropping the pan? Thanks!

      Change the fluid in them every 40-50k as well as the filter and it should be fine for many years...its the people that neglect the simple services that typically have issues...ignore the lifetime fluid BS LOL.

      Many carmakers have been using plastic intakes, valve covers, oil pans for decades. Not a lot of problems. Although I prefer aluminum on those parts, it is a cost and weight saving measure.

      In an earlier video, he recommends first service at 30k miles, changing the fluid only, not the filter. Then fluid and filter at 60k, and then recommended interval thereafter, which I think is every 60k miles if I'm not mistaken.

    Nice. I have a 2023 F150 and this video is invaluable. Why not snake a vacuum line into the fill hole once the dipstick is removed and remove as much fluid at that point? I've done that on other vehicles with good results. Why is there never a darn drain plug on the pan? I put one on an RV I have on a Ram Promaster 3500 chassis.

      Really no need to drain first, no matter what the exhaust is going to get soaked in trans fluid as the case drains out.

    I brought my 2018 to the dealer and asked for a drain & fill as my truck was just over 30k miles. They ended up flushing - I'm assuming to avoid the labor outlined in your video. Guess I'll have to do it myself or be more specific next time!

    I swear the engineers are just out to screw us technicians. They should be forced to work in the automotive repair trade for 5 years minimum before receiving an engineering degree to prevent this kind of bs.

      @HalfShell thank you! As an engineer in aerospace, we work with what we have. Automotive is even worse and their turn around times are insanely fast compared to ours. We do consider human factors but when you have a schedule and weight limits and customer requirements you have to meet in addition to the plethora of other government and industry standards, you soon find out why simplicity is not always the best way. There is so much I could say in addition regarding this topic but it would take too much time.

    I have a 2018 F150 10R 80 automatic. I contacted 4 Ford dealerships they all will only flush them. What your thoughts on flushing. I have 30 thousand miles figured I would just do an early service. It's much less expensive as a new transmission. Thank you for your channel it's great.

      And the Ford dealer wants to know why I won't trade in my 2002 F250...... The most difficult thing I have had to do so far on it, (Not done yet), change out the crappy roof corner trim pieces on top of the cab. I simply haven't had to do anything tough on this truck yet!! I take that back. Passenger side front shock top nut. That was a PITA.... Oh yeah, I still have not changed out the original spark plugs... V-10, don'cha know...

      The new Alison 1000 is the same as the ford 10r140.
      Internal parts are stamped with both gm and ford numbers.

    Just serviced mine and it was missing the filter gasket. Must have not been installed from the factory. Didn’t seem to have any problems but I really hope it didn’t cause any premature damage.🤞

      That's what I normally do. My 03 Durango and my 06 F150 were done here at home thru dipstick tube with fluid extractor from harbor freight. Made the job a snap. My 2011 with the 6r80 has no dipstick tube, just the fill port/joke dipstick, so I take it straight to Brian for this.

    These are fun to do engine oil changes on too. It's hard to snake that plastic drain plug out of its place, and then the oil splashes all over the sway bar and the transmission cooler. The 10-quart oil capacity only helps with the mess.

      It's weird because on my 3.5 ecoboost the plug faces the side and is VERY easy to get to and doesn't really hit much with the oil flow. Plus I like that my ecoboost only takes 6qts.

      This is infuriating. Plus that big diameter plastic plug flows about 3 quarts per second. I would like to talk to whoever approved that design.

    oh my god as a Lexus (fancy Toyota) technician this hurts my brain to watch!! Our transmission pans have a drain plug and the pans are always easy to get too and never anything around them, just drain, and remove the pan bolts and boom the pan is out. Bless you domestic technicians I could never deal with the stupid designs of modern domestics

    Or if you are a tech at a shop i recommend keeping a few of the battery terminal caps from a bettery when you install one only because i have had a lot of rags from cintas with metal shavings stuck in the rags some pretty big shavings plus its easier to just slide plastic cap over the battery terminal

      They're all doing it now not just Ford. Toyota Honda GM and Chrysler They're all doing it now.

    I have a 2020 f550 with the new big block gasser.... it DOES run stronger than the 10cyl especially in tow /haul.. but at 40k the trans took a dump & sat at the dealer for 3 months for a " sensor" now I'm at 80k, & the front pump seal has leaked out alot of fluid & I've no way to add .. I will have to drop it back for another 3 months I guess..
