As some people already pointed out: you should never shoot in S-Log 3 in low light situations. With custom color profiles you'll get a lot cleaner images. And shooting in S35 also doesn't help. The full frame sensor gathers a lot more light. That's also one of the reasons why I don't like the EOS for video. The difference in focal length isn't the only thing that changes with the crop factor. You'll also loose shallow depth of field and low light performance.
and btw even though the settings were the same, the A7 III videos always looked a bit brighter, which is probably one of the reasons why the highlights were blown out. It would be interesting to see the cameras side by side matched to the same brightness and not the same settings.

@@iurip.a.7104 what??? obviously you have no idea about Sony's low-light video performance... There is way too much more noise in images taken with Canon.
PS SLOG2 is flat enough to compare to CLOG. SLOG3 needs to be recorded on a recorder. Both are flat profiles but the SLOG3 is flatter and for best results - you must use it only in very ccontrasty scenes. 1. SLOG needs ~2 stops of overexposure by specs. So you were perfectly fine to shoot the Canon at its native ISO for CLOG. 2. You are totally ignoring the customization of the Sony profiles. It is something that can turn the tables. You can make a simple profile - Cine4 with Sgamut3 and boost the saturation a little. This will give you Canon colors and much easier to grade footage. You can tweak the Knee settings and get the smooth highlight roll off... Sony is giving you the settings to do whatever you want. 3. HLG - you have to try it... 4. 480mbits ALL-I is just as effective as 120mbits longgop codec. Yes there is a difference if you are shooting fast moving subjects of anything that requires more changes in the scene but you also get much smaller files with the longgop. My point here is that you both on your channels explain that the Canon codec is many times better and I suppose that you know the truth... they are pretty close. When you grade SLOG3 which is MUCH more flatter than the CLOG it is normal thing to have more problems with the compression. But with some simple tweaks the SLOG can be improved without losing any quality. The only reason to keep it stock is if you are matching it to other cameras like FS... And one more thing :) I have already seen other testers showing footage from those cameras and it looks like you and PotatoJet are trying with post processing to make the EOS R look better. I am pretty sure about that when I saw the videos from PotatoJet but you @Armando Ferreira... I thought that you are more fair and unbiased.
What a BS, ofc the a35mm suck A LOT!!! AND the bigger problem is, why the you did NOT use correct exposures, who shoots underexposed scenes anyway? No one, ever. Correct the exposure as you go up the ISO. That a disappointment, use the camera the RIGHT way!
@@billjohnson1816 l think you missed the part @3:51 we did test both FF and Super 35mm and the results were pretty much the same. The Sony as I said in my video "destroyed" the ESO R and there's really no competition there.
Great video Armando! Your absolutely right shooting out of the box skin tones and highlight roll-off are definitely better! That default profile is terrible, (I don't even know why they even have it there) and with Sony all the profiles are super confusing even though they give you so many options. I really wish they would re-name them. Going down to PP1 makes the roll off much better but you still have about 9%-12% of ultra whites "hidden" above 100% IRE which does make that profile great for lowlight but for quick easy turn around there isn't a great profile out of the box, especially for those just starting out. Your exactly right that autofocus is much more cinematic where the Sony's is too quick out of the box, its like with Sony you have to tweak everything to get the best results which is a huge downside. I'm planning a comparison with just the EOS R vs A7iii (so I can match the same lenses) since I won't be comparing to 3 cameras. I was wondering if you shot everything in Super 35 crop mode on the A7iii, since then you no longer are using downsampled 6K to 4K footage which will result in less detail, 1.5 stops or even worse lowlight, less dynamic range, etc. I wish the Sony had that higher bit rate, especially for S-Log. S-Log 3 had great dynamic range but as you saw the footage isn't really usable because of the codec, so most Sony shooter stick with S-Log 3 which has better (but still not great) skin tones and much less image issues at a slight loss of Dynamic range (something like 1/2 stop). Cannon really does make it easy for people to focus on what they are filming instead of camera settings which is a big deal.
In fact, I think I need to make another "what I hate about Sony cameras" video. They've fixed a few things I complained about before, so maybe that will help.

So I am stuck between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7 III. I like to shoot a lot of concerts, nightclubs, parties and occasional portraits. I have been using the canon 80D and its not bad for what it does, but I've been looking for something that does better in low light and does better focusing on movement. I might want to get into video at some point but mostly just photography at the moment. I don't know if the differences between these are so big, but if they are not I am thinking of just getting the EOS R because I enjoy the bigger body and comfortably.
in low light sony is better. IBIS 5-steps(so, you can shot for example at 1/50 for stills). non-crop 4k. 1080p/120fps with sound. better eye-focus, faster low-light focus.
Great vid, but why no comment on 4k on eosr is cropped and that 120fps is 720p? I had canon apsc system and lenses for a while before, but that (and low light) was the reason for me to go a7iii instead of eos r.
You guys are a great team! Thanks for the vid, now off to the 4K vid (which I may have seen already, but my EOS R just arrived today so I'm brushing up). My Weebill S arrived a week ago, so fun in my future!
Personally I prefer the Sony color. Check out Sean Tucker's channel. He did a more comprehensive and accurate skin color comparison. Also Gerald Undone did a great video on color science, very insightful.
Jeff Luo I think Potato Jet said it best in his video, image colors are like art. Just because someone likes a specific art piece doesn't mean it's good or bad. I think both cameras give you great results and in the end you have to pick what works best for you.
I watched Sean's video but you can't really apply it to shooting video. He is editing raw images, good luck grading 8 bit video like that. So the straight out of camera colours are kind of important for this test. If you prefer Sony that's great but the majority of people seems to prefer canon in this test.
There’s a lot of Sony sales associates on you tube posing as video experts it’s pretty common knowledge that canon has been on top of the dual purpose photo /video camera game for a decade are more know since the 70d anyways , if you were on a movie set and needed a quick 3rd angle shot no one pulls out a Sony’s a series camera where as a 1dx2.... yeah not to mention glass and mount and a smooth AF Sony has gotten better but they aren’t on canons level yet no matter what any youtube pro tells you.
This was very cool. EOS R had much better colours but after grading that advantage goes real quick. The highlight roll off is much better then again the A7iii is punching a lot above its weight
kapil busawah You're missing one point though. He had the Canon images to 'match'. If you don't own both cameras you can't do that, so you're just guessing at colours.
6 ปีที่แล้ว +2
highlight roll off is extremely adjustable on sony a7 iii, just go to the picture profile and knee settings, you can practically do a tone curve adjustement there.... helpguide.sony.net/di/pp/v1/en/contents/TP0000909110.html people who have sony should really check those manuals, they are not even 3 pages but makes you understand every setting
don't need another camera to match. X-Rite Color Checker. That's all you need. Davinci will even automatically grade for you. Will improve canon's video also! :)
Who uses standard profile ? Besides amateurs ? With the grading I like the Sony colors better, but more importantly why did the highlight fall off test was done in standard profile ? That’s really the kind of test we need to see in slog at least slog 2. And did you try HDR on the Sony ?
The more and more I watch vidoes like this, the more and more the R is proving itself (not taking anything away from Sony). But Seems like everyone, including myself, jumped the gun with disregarding the R based off of specs alone. Really impressive camera. Great video.
This video is very biased. Yes, the EOS-R can create great footage, but they essentially compared it to an a6500 by cropping the sensor, which costs less than half of the EOS-R. Also, the color science stuff with standard profiles was very biased. It looks like they slightly over exposed the Sony and shifted the Canon wb towards magenta to neutralize the yellow highlights. Canon does not typically have people with purple skin, but in this video, this was the case. The Sony was more accurate on the colors, but the overexposed yellow made it unpleasant. Adjusting exposure and shifting WB towards magenta would have made it look very similar to the EOS R in the standard profile. For photography purposes, color science only exists in jpeg. If you shoot raw, both Sony and Canon produce photos that look similar and I do not prefer one over the other. The same is true when shooting in log for video. You can easily match the footage by color grading, which this video did a good job of showing.
Keeping them at the same ISO level was a big mistake. The best comparison would be each of them at their native ISO. When they are not the dynamic range decreases greatly
With all of those external hard drives, have you considered consolidating your storage into a file server? Should make your old content way easier to pull up over your network rather than having to figure out which hard drive it's on and digging that out.
If you have time check out histogram comparisons. I sold my a7riii but when comparing the EOS R with the X T3 I was shocked to see how choppy and violently zigzaggy the Fuji was in comparison to the Canon which was smooth like a roller coaster with no violent zigzags. I was using a 56mm on the Fuji and 70-200 f4 on the Canon.
Can somebody help me: 2 questions: 1)when he says slog 3 what picture profile are we talking about? 2)Also when you go into those profiles there is looooootttt that can be changed in those sony pictures profiles . Where would I learn how to change those as well?
I really enjoyed your collaboration with the kid from UP. Your videos were informative and fair to both cameras. Unfortunately I'm even less sure of which one to buy now but that's OK because I have time to save up some money.
Superb comparison between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7III. Appreciate if you can do a continuous shooting comparison review (burst mode) (which is more important for wild life photography)
8:51 you can see more of the tree above the basketball goal on the Sony. They really are close to each other and I'd say you can't go wrong either way. If you have Sony lenses then go that route because you have to buy some for Canon.
Hi, great video ! for the dynamic comparison, why don't you use the waveform of each cam and just see witch image is clipping the most ? thanks for this review anyway !
@Armando Ferreira There is a picture profile you can use for low-light settings! It's PP2 but if you tweak it, you can get it even better. I never use SLOG3 at night. Please try it and let me know how it goes for you!
Thanks for posting this guys. My only big vice with the Canon R is the crop factor on the 4k footage... it's honestly such a let down as you'll need super wide lenses to achieve a wide angle shot.
shoot in 1080p? man... I'm so bummed you just said that.. (lol). You just broke my heart dude. In many cases shooting in 1080p is not an option as I rely on the ability to punch and zoom in post production.
Jaeger Mah seems like you're shooting especifc type of content, I've never been in a situation where I need to punch in. If I need a closer shot I'll switch lenses because 9-10 times zoomed in shots look well, zoomed in. Even in 4k I wouldn't to beyond what I've shot unless it's 5%
When you shoot professionally, you don't shoot crazy high ISO 3200, 6400 too. Also, you don't shoot high dynamic scene, it's all lit artificially. Both are excellent and the overall bigger system have the edge as per requirement.
You do if you are a profesional run and gun videographer. I can use ISO 3200 in weddings for example, but i'll never use the standar profile, maybe for an interview? and then you can do some quick color grading to make it much better
@@hav6301 But These aren't meant for run and gun videography. That's why pro camcorders exist. These are more like film making tools than run and gun things.

The a73 and eosR are dual purpose photo /video cameras not at all are they designed for film making they can be used for that but there are a lot better options in the price range of these cameras for actually filming a movie are even indie short but whatever you have can work that’s for sure
@@joewayne9951 They're indeed dual purpose But they're not supposed to be used in the auto mode or standard picture profile. We're supposed find the perfect manual settings which varies with each camera. So that's why I said it's pointless to compare both cameras with their standard picture profile. Maybe the Canon is better at auto mode, but how can that mean it's better it all ways?!
I liked the look of canon’s standard picture profile better, but the slog-3 image was better. That could be because you’ve had more practice grading it

Found the 1DX II to be nearly twice as good when pushing ISO vs the EOS R. You can see on the sony for a split second when you are bumping ISO that it is applying a noise filter. Your Baby C200 video made me feel a lot better about the purchase. It may not be the perfect camera but its the perfect camera for ME. Thanks for all your content. I've learned a lot. It's people like you that make any of these skills obtainable to people like me.
After watching this video I’m gonna buy a Canon EOS R soon, thanks a lot for the useful informations
Tojikiston Today Yeah, same. I tought the A7 M3 was much better but now I got my opinion changed with this video.
@@slbandre its really close camera the a7iii have color close to reality, sharpness, better af in good condition and low light u dont see too many diferencr, eos r have better af in low light, better colors in low light and noise its about the same
@@iurip.a.7104 what??? obviously you have no idea about Sony's low-light video performance... There is way too much more noise in images taken with Canon.
@@rubydiseno9406 i have no idea? I have the 2 câmeras the Sony about 1 year and canon 2mounth
@@rubydiseno9406 I love Sony but I'm not blind
That C200 b-roll kills all of them! Sweet!
Why A7III is in super35 mode for low light? It is MUCH better in full frame mode...
i was thinking the same exact thing
@@mondobytes @3:51 is still says the Sony is in Super 35. Maybe it's a mistake.
When the EOS R was released I was really disappointed with the specs. But man does it perform! Wow!
Nice videos Max!
In fact, I think I need to make another "what I hate about Sony cameras" video. They've fixed a few things I complained about before, so maybe that will help.
Please do some test on still images, not video, when shooting sports and moving subjects. See which autofocus is better/faster.
Looks like to have a Canon Eos R and Sony A7III next to eachother would solve the problem since they both fill eachothers shortcomings more or less.
@@MaksimYuryev how does this video compare with the one you did recently comparing the video quality from several mirrorless cameras? Based on your video, canon performed poorly. I'd like to know your thoughts on this?
I was looking forward to this! I love Potato Jet/Gene/UP kid!
it would be amazing if they add 120fps 1080 with firmware on the EOS R...
I have 4 canon cameras and have been using them for years but I switched to the sony a7riii and by far its the best camera I have tried for the way I shoot. although I would like to get my hands on the Fujifilm XT3 (#fuji colors)
Can you do an EOS R vs. original Sony A7S?
Isnt SLOG 3 a bit more grainy compared to SLOG 2?

This is the first test where any comparable camera beats a Sony in low light, speed focus and video recording. This was a fun review!
Why didn't you compare c-log to the a7iii's pp10 with 2020 hlg? Using a Sony's standard profile defeats the purpose of the test.
Exactly
7:58 wasn’t the a7iii suppose to have a better dynamic range ?? Because the highlights are blown up on the Sony compared to the Canon
Thank you for the detailed video. I am a baby and maternity photographer and have always been a canon user. My question is, does canon EOS R a good investment in 2023?
*I gotta give it to the Nokia 3310, the image was just a lot sharper*
Yeh!

Hi Armando, got to your channel from Potato's video! You guys are awesome! Humble, friendly, honest and entertaining! I find both the comparison videos amazing as both of you are field experienced and is someone who knows what's what and what's required in the field. Your videos are far honest and more practical than what other TH-cam "reviewers" put up. Thanks for that and both the Cameras are amazing in their own ways! And please do put up the C200 vs EOS R comparison! You got a subscriber!
Thank you so much for stopping by, working on that video as we speak!
Damn I feel you bro. I'm stuck in your same exact condition. Been using the Canon 80D for two years but it just doesn't perform good in low light.
in low light sony is better. IBIS 5-steps(so, you can shot for example at 1/50 for stills). non-crop 4k. 1080p/120fps with sound. better eye-focus, faster low-light focus.
makes me wanna switch to EOS R, can you do a video on rolling shutter? I plan to get one for making music videos
You have canon or the sony?
Great vid, but why no comment on 4k on eosr is cropped and that 120fps is 720p? I had canon apsc system and lenses for a while before, but that (and low light) was the reason for me to go a7iii instead of eos r.
An experienced videographer can make any camera look better or worse however he or she likes.
You guys are a great team! Thanks for the vid, now off to the 4K vid (which I may have seen already, but my EOS R just arrived today so I'm brushing up). My Weebill S arrived a week ago, so fun in my future!
Do the 10bit review.
It's nice to finally see some positive reviews of the EOS R after so much hate on the internet.
Personally I prefer the Sony color. Check out Sean Tucker's channel. He did a more comprehensive and accurate skin color comparison. Also Gerald Undone
did a great video on color science, very insightful.
Jeff Luo I think Potato Jet said it best in his video, image colors are like art. Just because someone likes a specific art piece doesn't mean it's good or bad. I think both cameras give you great results and in the end you have to pick what works best for you.
I agree. Canon is too yellow
I watched Sean's video but you can't really apply it to shooting video. He is editing raw images, good luck grading 8 bit video like that. So the straight out of camera colours are kind of important for this test. If you prefer Sony that's great but the majority of people seems to prefer canon in this test.
is crazy how other videos comparison that i saw had sony winning all of the one that canon won on this video, something is weird
Laertes the barber yes... these guys know what they are doing.
Laertes the barber if you leave EIS ON which is the electronic stabilization it crops in to the image and really degrades the quality.
Its all a matter of settings in the end.
yep, this video is very bias and intentionally favouring Canon.
I love the versatility of the Canon flippy-screens, compared to to the 'limited' Sony screens.
even as a canon user i assumed the sony would be better, but side by side, the canon always looks better. Im glad thats the case.
This was very cool. EOS R had much better colours but after grading that advantage goes real quick. The highlight roll off is much better then again the A7iii is punching a lot above its weight
kapil busawah You're missing one point though. He had the Canon images to 'match'. If you don't own both cameras you can't do that, so you're just guessing at colours.
highlight roll off is extremely adjustable on sony a7 iii, just go to the picture profile and knee settings, you can practically do a tone curve adjustement there.... helpguide.sony.net/di/pp/v1/en/contents/TP0000909110.html people who have sony should really check those manuals, they are not even 3 pages but makes you understand every setting
@@cooloox exactly.
don't need another camera to match.

And did you try HDR on the Sony ?
uuuhhh! The Up guy in the video! What a nice surprise!!!
wow there is no breathing on the canon 16-35mm II...and the color contrast is great
The more and more I watch vidoes like this, the more and more the R is proving itself (not taking anything away from Sony).
Curious what would happen if you turned on auto eye focus on the sony camera.
Im confused-was the 4K on eos R tested at all?? I only see side by side comparison with Canon 1080p and Sony 4K
If you have time check out histogram comparisons. I sold my a7riii but when comparing the EOS R with the X T3 I was shocked to see how choppy and violently zigzaggy the Fuji was in comparison to the Canon which was smooth like a roller coaster with no violent zigzags. I was using a 56mm on the Fuji and 70-200 f4 on the Canon.
any test on stabilization? I would love to see the comparison on 5-axis IBIS and canon's IS!
For landscape, Sony A7 iii or Canon eos R?
Can somebody help me: 2 questions: 1)when he says slog 3 what picture profile are we talking about? 2)Also when you go into those profiles there is looooootttt that can be changed in those sony pictures profiles . Where would I learn how to change those as well?
love to see all this guys hanging out together
I really enjoyed your collaboration with the kid from UP. Your videos were informative and fair to both cameras. Unfortunately I'm even less sure of which one to buy now but that's OK because I have time to save up some money.
Why does my eos R produce so muc more grain?? My iso 400 looks worse than his iso 10,000
Set high iso noise reduction to standard
Great video man. I've been doing some studio shopping for a new job I just got and your videos have been SUPER helpful. Keep it up!
I'd like to hear what you think of HLG on the Sony. Thanks!
FYI, center lock-on AF can be turned on in Sony to track a moving subject.
great video. I planning to buy mirrorless Camera . I would just love to see EOSR vs Sony A7R3. share me link if Done . Thanks
Thx for the comparison, but HLG on the Sony would be better IMO than S-Log3.
How about that as reference?
I was already convinced to buy the sony a7iii but after watching this video I was probably going to make a mistake 😬
Hi, great video ! for the dynamic comparison, why don't you use the waveform of each cam and just see witch image is clipping the most ? thanks for this review anyway !
Good comparison video. Would you also compare EOS R vs Z7 or Z7 vs Sony A7III?
Better for TH-cam videos and canon eos rp or sony a7 iii ??
Things for the PAST now Sony a7III got new Firmware on Superpub AUTOFOCUS like a6400 and A9
@Armando Ferreira There is a picture profile you can use for low-light settings! It's PP2 but if you tweak it, you can get it even better. I never use SLOG3 at night. Please try it and let me know how it goes for you!
What lense are used on both cameras ? While recording with the highlight i mean recording the elder asian guy ?
Thanks for posting this guys. My only big vice with the Canon R is the crop factor on the 4k footage... it's honestly such a let down as you'll need super wide lenses to achieve a wide angle shot.
Jaeger Mah it's honestly not that big of a deal, shoot in 1080P. Honestly the difference is so negligible that I feel it's just a way to complain.
shoot in 1080p?
You don't buy a professional camera to shoot in the standard picture profile! You should use the best settings and it varies from camera to camera.
Nanogalaxy film making camera...??? The a73 and eosR are dual purpose photo /video cameras not at all are they designed for film making they can be used for that but there are a lot better options in the price range of these cameras for actually filming a movie are even indie short but whatever you have can work that’s for sure
@@joewayne9951 They're indeed dual purpose
But they're not supposed to be used in the auto mode or standard picture profile. We're supposed find the perfect manual settings which varies with each camera. So that's why I said it's pointless to compare both cameras with their standard picture profile. Maybe the Canon is better at auto mode, but how can that mean it's better it all ways?!
6:42 You said a73 works better at high iso so why in this moment its opposite??? why canon r cleaner here??
If you could make a video on how you colour grade your video or if you would sell your luts then i would be realllyyyy happy

For highlight rolloff you definitely need to use Hlg3
I enjoy your videos way to much :D keep it up!!
I liked the look of canon’s standard picture profile better, but the slog-3 image was better. That could be because you’ve had more practice grading it
Hey! Slog is mess on 8bit especially slog3 which not utillize all bit depth. Try HLG with Rec2020 in PP10. It's really really better. It make 100fps more usable than slog.

Thanks for this, Armando. What were you filming your 'to camera' stuff on (you and Potato Jet at the beginning)? It was slightly out of focus. I see you talked about using the Canon M50 - the autofocus/tracking on the M50 is usually really good.
drutgat2 it was Potato Jet's M50 not sure what his settings were? Don't think it was out of focus it was shot in 1080P that's probably why it looks a bit blurry
Found the 1DX II to be nearly twice as good when pushing ISO vs the EOS R. You can see on the sony for a split second when you are bumping ISO that it is applying a noise filter. Saw tests where they compared it to the a7riii & a7sii and it does have a much softer image when ISO is pushed up. Does a decent job though for in camera, too bad you can't disable it if you wanted however.

Hello sir i have question about which camera should buy a6400 or a7iii ?? I'm using now canon750d and want to upgrade my usual usage is to get best clarity pictures and some videography work..pls help me
For me the options you have are very different, the a6400 matches on a midrange level while the a7iii is on the top tier of mirrorless cameras. If you think you will use it for a very long time and it would be a good investment probably get the a7iii but if you think the money you are going to spend would not be worth it for taking pictures and not earning the money back, you could get the a6400 with great lenses.
