I generally always recommend a 24-70mm 2.8 plus another lens that fits their photo style. I have several lenses from 14mm to 500mm and probably 70% of my photos are with the 24-70. Just so good for family events, wide enough for groups and tele enough for nice portraits.
sadly the 50mm becomes almost an 80mm in crop bodies, making it almost useless, it's too damn tight for street photography and I never shoot portraits and stuff
I got into photography before I had kids, so I started with the 24-70 and 70-200, both L series and f2.8 and they were brilliant investments. 15 years later, lots of wedding and portraits and family photos later, I’ve only needed one diaphragm replacement on the 24-70. Otherwise, no problems. I added the 17-40 f4 later, and a 1.4x converter (should’ve gone the 2x) and it all fits in a backpack, along with a flash, camera body obviously, and battery charger. Yes it was expensive but good quality gear will literally last for decades if looked after, and the image quality is undeniable. It’s worth saving up for, if your circumstances allow.
I was always into photography, since I was 7 and got my first camera. But when I came to taking up my photography to the pro level I got all caught up in what lens, who’s using what, maybe this or that. If I’d only gone for these three I would have had a solid foundation. I did go with the 70-200 then a bunch of primes and a monster 28-300 pump action bazooka. Made so many bad choices with my lenses and other kit too. No matter what you’re going to shoot, the Holy Trinity will be able to get you the shots you need, by and large. I have now got the 24-70 f4 with IS because the 2.8’s don’t have IS. I tend to shoot it f4-6.3 so I don’t need the 2.8, except for when I do. That’s the thing with photography, there’s always another piece of kit that’ll work better for a particular scenario. Beyond the Holy Trinity you need to know what you’re shooting to decide what kit you need. Decide on a budget, stick to it and get the best kit you can. Investing in good lenses is always better than a new camera.
@@andredo4880 that would depend on what you’re shooting and the environment too. The mk2 version of the EF 24-105 is much improved on the old one which is a bit of a dog really. If you’re shooting some video the extra focal length of the 24-105 might be useful. Again it all depends on what & how you shoot

I have an SL2 and if u want a new better lense I would get the canon 50mm f1.8 because of the crop factor on the camera it acts more like an 85mm but it's still cheap and the f1.8 makes ur photos look super creamy
JaxFox get a 70-300 f4-5.6. higher focal range than the one in the video but depending on image stabalisation, price and optics it won’t be very sharp. i recomend the sigma 70-300 DG macro as a first telephoto
Not to mention that the quality is still better then a zoom. The zoom is for someone that wants to travel light and doesn't mind having a compromise on the front of their camera.

This is great advice. Makes for a nice tidy package that fits in a regular size camera backpack. If one is on a budget I'd say do whatever you can to save for the 70-200 f/2.8 II. It's one of the best lenses ever made. The other two at f/4 are both great lenses and will be very adequate for most photographers. They are sharper than the 2.8s and way less expensive. The 24-70 has macro at 70, a nice bonus, and both are image stabilized, which helps you get a little slower shutter speed to let in more light at f/4.
For my Nikon digital I have a 50mm Prime, the 18 - 55mm Kit, and a 70-300mm. So far those three have covered all my needs, I don't really see myself buying anything else anytime soon, unless maybe I swap out the kit lens... For my now retired Canon film I have more lenses than space to store them, and used to obsess over which ones to take whenever I left the house. Today it's so much simpler having just the three. Now I shoot to what I have, instead of spending half my time thinking about which lens would work best.
@@darthvader507 yeah and a Leica summilux-c is 40k per lens and a some Panavision lenses are 500k per lens.... Photography lenses, especially the one which nearly fell over does not cost 6k
The 24-70 mark 2 is my favorite lens all around. I owned the prior lens and it's a huge improvement in sharpness, color and contrast - I've had it over two years and it still blows me away. I also have the 16-34 f4 which I like because of the price and IS built-in. I don't regret losing the extra stop of light for the value - it's an amazing, affordable lens
Same on both counts. I bought the 16-35 f/4 used in 2020 and immediately took it to a friend's place to shoot his family in the treehouse they'd built. Pics turned out beautifully. I don't use it a ton but it was a banger lens for exactly that purpose.
I agree w/the lens choices -- those are fantastic -- but I'm glad you emphasized *FIGURE OUT WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY YOU ARE/WANT TO DO* bc that's far more important! That's what I tell people asking about what type of gear/lenses they should get. Especially bc of the cost of lenses, to get full value, ppl need to spend some time figuring out how they "see" the world. I thought my kit would be 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200, as well, however turns out when I started playing with the telephoto range, I always cranked it straight to the furthest zoom available. If I got the 70-200, like intended, it wouldn't serve me bc I'd only really use the 100-200 portion. So now I'm looking at 150-600, much better investment for me.
Peter, I was thinking about the kit I typically carry now and the trinity is it. I had not even really thought it through. You do a great service to everyone who loves creating imagery. I am also grateful you mentioned Pentax. Us Pentaxians always feel like the market after thought and the glass is superb.
Cheaper lenses that I own amd will recommend as they still provide amazing quality : Canon 50mm f1.8 mark 2 Canon 10-18mm (think it's f3.5-5.6) Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2
@@mraacht there is a Tamron 24-70 for Canon EF, for ~1000€ I believe (and maybe you could get earlier version for even half of that - quite a decent lens still). There is also the L series Canon 24-70 for likes of 2500.
As a beginner photographer...I really appreciate this feedback. It helps me so I don't spend a bunch of money buying several different prime lenses. All I have if the nifty fifty and now thinking of getting the 24-70 mm 2.8. Love it! You're my inspiration!
Why would you waste money on these f2.8 lenses as a beginner? It's your money, do whatever you want with it, but what's the point in getting the best possible right away while your skill is nowhere near enough to maximize the usage of those lenses?
@@dimitrijekrstic7567 To play devils advocate, If she buys the best as a beginner, once her skills improve she already has the best of the best equipment and doesnt need to spend more money if she sees herself wanting the faster lens down the line.
10-20mm for real estate and landscape awesomeness, Nifty fifty for detail shots, 60 mm macro for lovilness (love love love), and of course the 70-200 for amazing compression-ness. A lot for one bag, but.... Gotta have em all!
Obsessed with both! My assistant broke my lens 😖 took a very hard smash to the ground from a ladder... I’m cringing thinking about it. My hubby is getting me a new one soon, thank goodness!
Hahaha. Yes. you holding those three lenses altogether stressed me out. I love your channel not only because it has great content, but the fact that you make these videos interesting to watch. you are my virtual tutor for this path I choose. thank you so much.
Dude your videos are brilliant , especially from the point of view of a photographer trying to transition into film making... Applied some of what you said in so many of my videos!!! Dont stop making these :) !!
If you really want to start taking better pictures don't just focus on lenses: it's the picture that sells. Learn to look for the right moment and make sure you know what settings reproduce that moment on film. Take notes and rethink what you did and must do better next time. Good lenses don't taken good pictures: good photographers do. These lenses are very good but only in the hands of somebody who knows what he's doing. Remember: practise makes perfect!
If you don't mind the absence of zoom I'd go for a 50mm f/1.4 (around $400, gerenal photo), an 85mm f/1.8 ($350, perfect for portraits) and maybe a Tokina 11-16mm for street and landscape. All for around $1000 instead of $3-4k, with better sharpness than zooms.
Just found you in January, and I'm not sure how many of your videos I've watched now but it's a lot! Love your style. I am a total newb but really enjoy seeing your videos! Thank you for all of the help
Hi mr McKinnon! Your suggestion is more like to cover all the range of focal lengths but, in my opinion, not the holy trinity of lenses. I'd keep the two lenses of telezoom and widezoom such as 70-200mm and 16-35mm and.. aaannddd for that mid range my suggestion IS A 50mm. those 24-70ish lenses are just to stuffed with different glasses to do the job either wide or tele, but the 50mm that clean standard lense... so beautyfull results!!! LOVE YR VLOG DUDE!!!!!!!!
For me, the challenge is that I like doing things that require 300 or even 400mm lenses, and if I do anything below 100, it's either macro, or something very specific. My main challenge is being limited by how wide my lenses can get, mostly due to what I can afford. The 200-400 F/4L is probably the lens for me. But also, that's more than I'm spending any time soon as a non pro.
Na!!! I used to have "The Holy Grail" for weddings. Now I have only primes for my weddings; 14mm 2.8, 35mm 1.4, 55mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.4. NOT looking back!
@@monicaalvarez9686 prime always better on image and video quality, sharp, and more wide aperture cause its made by focusing on one focal length. Zoom lens was better because versality of the focal length, but little bit unsharp than prime lens. Prime and zoom lens had his own pros and cons
I'm 66 an amateur photographer, because well life, but now I do this and I have to tell you Peter McKinnon is just a blessing to watch, nice to see a young person so excited about what he does. Give me hope.
Carried one on my Canon F-1 for years and still do on my 5D3 though I tend to carry a 28 more and more. Forces you to get close to the subject and helps you learn to break the ice. I always found that the second lens everyone used to buy was a telephoto since they didn't want to interact with their subject. Of course if you are shooting crop sensor then the 35 is actually around a 50 which is the proper prime for a 35mm frame.
I dunno about you guys, I couldnt live without my 70-200.... xD Although I have to admit im thinking of getting one of those vinyl covers for it or something, as sometimes i like the standout white... but sometimes I wish it didnt stand out SSOO damn much...
For APSC setup I got a Rokinon 12mm f2, Fuji 35mm f2 and Fuji 55-200mm f3.5 for about $1600 in total for photography and I'm pretty happy with that setup. I might also get a gimbal to compliment my 35mm which doesn't have image stabilisation to use for video cause that prime is so damn good.
I literally spit my cereal out of my mouth and onto my laptop when you threw your hat and almost knocked over your lens!!!! Now I'm gonna go buy a new laptop. LOL
Your trinity works for wedding/events, architecture, and landscape. However, for a portrait and fashion guy like myself, I'll trade the 16-35mm (which only adds 8MMs to your existing range at the cost of several hundred dollars) for an 85mm f1.2

If Peter says it's good, it's good.
Hhh no shit
Unless it´s the EOS R.
Get yout own opinion.
Except coffee, coffee is gross
anyone else notice the POTATO JET background music?
(ik it's from epidemic sound)
Jishnu what's it called?
Definitely
trust me, there will be a collab soon
Lol recognized as soon as it started
I just started watching Peter’s video right after finishing Potato jet’s latest and I was wondering what kind of voodoo it was.
The pic in the snow with the 16-35mm f/2.8 is so dope!!!
Clicks on "cheap versions" 999$...leaves..
That last bit scared the sh*t out of me!!!
I now owe these 3. Love them.
Lucky bro :)
This intro music.. thought I was watching a Potato Jet video
YES! Throughout the WHOLE video, loved it, Potato McKinnon.
Tommy Callaway same
AHAHAH hell yeah me too.
What is the title of the music?
Same here
Peter, I was thinking about the kit I typically carry now and the trinity is it. I had not even really thought it through. You do a great service to everyone who loves creating imagery. I am also grateful you mentioned Pentax. Us Pentaxians always feel like the market after thought and the glass is superb.
Cheaper lenses that I own amd will recommend as they still provide amazing quality :
Canon 50mm f1.8 mark 2
Canon 10-18mm (think it's f3.5-5.6)
Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2
What's the equivalent of the Tamron 24-70 in a Canon lens?
@@mraacht there is a Tamron 24-70 for Canon EF, for ~1000€ I believe (and maybe you could get earlier version for even half of that - quite a decent lens still). There is also the L series Canon 24-70 for likes of 2500.
10-18 and the EFS 10-22 are both brilliant lenses for way less than the 16-35.
I have watched a few of your videos, this one I like the most because it's short, precise and to the point. Thanks.
Thank you so much for all your videos; I've learned so much about photography from them. You're a great teacher! Thanks again.
why not 12 minute tuesday
Two hour Tuesday!
2 day Tuesday
Mike G as long as that’s just a video and not in the office 😂
2 year tuesday
He uses two minutes Tuesday cause its more fun to say... lol
10-20mm for real estate and landscape awesomeness, Nifty fifty for detail shots, 60 mm macro for lovilness (love love love), and of course the 70-200 for amazing compression-ness. A lot for one bag, but.... Gotta have em all!
Obsessed with photography but no money for new lenses 😩
obsessed with photography or camera gear?
Buy old lenses and adapt them
Obsessed with both!
I've always recommended this set of lenses to anyone looking at getting into photography/cinematography! The perfect pairs for all ranges!
Dude your videos are brilliant , especially from the point of view of a photographer trying to transition into film making... Applied some of what you said in so many of my videos!!! Dont stop making these :) !!
Keep practicing dawg
I don't have a lot of money. I have a 1200d with a 50mm 1.8, 70-300 4-5.6 and a 18-55 3.5-5.6. It's not amazing but it does the job
man you can still do a lot with that
Those aren’t bad lenses at all, especially that 50 1.8. That’s a nice piece of glass
10-18 is stm, great affordable landscape
17-55 is usm, old but great for general photography
55-250 is stm, my favorite tele lens so far
Welcome to my world. An old Sony NEX6 (before the a6000 series) with a tamron 18mm-200mm F/3.5-6.3
I have exactly these same lens.
Also they work in much lower light conditions than the zooms - like concerts.
I have the same set up
Holy Trinity of ZOOM lenses. I concur. Primes - 35 1.2, 85 1.2, 135 2.0 or 200 2.8
Just found you in January, and I'm not sure how many of your videos I've watched now but it's a lot! Love your style. I am a total newb but really enjoy seeing your videos! Thank you for all of the help
These three lens we call them “大三元”.In English means “big 3”.the best lenses from wide to
telephoto.
This guy may be my favorite youtuber quality stuff man!
You are on fire man! So many videos lately 😍 There goes my sleep... 😅
Shervin Koushan I thought the same thing hahaha “ou Peter just uploaded another one... f@#ck my nap”😂
The same here. Not sleeping 🙄 Watching McKinnon 😍
@@dwitkowska 😂😂
For me, the challenge is that I like doing things that require 300 or even 400mm lenses, and if I do anything below 100, it's either macro, or something very specific. My main challenge is being limited by how wide my lenses can get, mostly due to what I can afford. The 200-400 F/4L is probably the lens for me. But also, that's more than I'm spending any time soon as a non pro.
This guys a freaking God when it comes to explaining photography. Awesome!
Na!!! I used to have "The Holy Grail" for weddings. Now I have only primes for my weddings; 14mm 2.8, 35mm 1.4, 55mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.4.
NOT looking back!
Can you explain to me why primes are better? I can’t make a decision
@@monicaalvarez9686 prime always better on image and video quality, sharp, and more wide aperture cause its made by focusing on one focal length. Zoom lens was better because versality of the focal length, but little bit unsharp than prime lens. Prime and zoom lens had his own pros and cons
Exactly my kind if kit dude!
The kit lenses that came with my 80d....because that is all i can afford right now :)
Doesn't matter, if you go out and make the effort you'll get amazing shots and nobody will know what lens you used
@@HVRIS That's exactly what I'm doing :-) well trying to do my videos kind of sucks so far LOL everyone's got to start somewhere :-)
Half Insane Outdoor guy mate if you saw what mine were like when I just started. You’d wanna cringe haha so don’t worry. We all start somewhere
I'll get there someday =D
Half Insane Outdoor guy show the results 🙏🏼
Man your video's inspire me every time I watch one. Huge fan and cant wait to see what you have for us next!!
Is it just me thinking this, or is Peter uploading more frequently this year? Am I a terrible fan if it's just me? 😅
ImRobPi nope he’s uploaded more frequently this past week and this week
yeah it has been nearly every day lol
He has! Great year for us it seems!
Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday! Loving the consistency!
ImRobPi I hope he keeps uploading but don’t feel the pressure 💖 (did you see Casey’s video?)
Meanwhile im over here with the holy duo🙏 I got my nifty fifty and 18-55mm kit lens😂
I'm 66 an amateur photographer, because well life, but now I do this and I have to tell you Peter McKinnon is just a blessing to watch, nice to see a young person so excited about what he does. Give me hope.
35mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8. I'm addicted to it!
35mm is just such a versatile focal length dawg
Great job running around with three 35mill lenses :D
@@MatthiasAI I use APSC so a 70-200 is quite the step up in weight and size! although, I'd lug it around if I had one! hahaha
I went with a medium budget for a Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 (300€), a 50mm 1.4 (300€) and a used 70-200 F4 IS (430€ Ebay). Fits perfect for me.
You can take photos with any canon lenses as long as you know about photography
"Even if you hit the bell, we'll think about it." 😂 So true.
Two vids in one day- we are not worthy.
Peter I could listen to you talk all day you should make a video of you just rambleing tbh
I love the 55-200! Can't ask for a better lens at $400 given the size and OIS.
Canon 11-24 awesome sense
Canon 24-70
Canon 100-400, my holy trinity
Your personality is what makes the videos amazing!
The evolution of 2 minute Tuesdays... Becomes 20mins Tuesdays. Love it 😂
Canon almost cancelled their affiliation with Peter after that hat throw
You are amazing and great to watch! The best TH-cam creator in photography and videography!!!
How about just a pairing of 24-105 f4L and the 70-200 f2.8L ii? I use a 6D for a wide variety of shooting. Mostly portraits and racing/sports.
1000 for a "cheap" lens,
My camera was 500 with 2 lenses
Same😂😂
@Frenzay What camera and lenses ?
I always watch this video before I buy a lens :)
I literally spit my cereal out of my mouth and onto my laptop when you threw your hat and almost knocked over your lens!!!! Now I'm gonna go buy a new laptop. LOL
hahahaha this is gold
🤣🤣🤣
Your trinity works for wedding/events, architecture, and landscape. However, for a portrait and fashion guy like myself, I'll trade the 16-35mm (which only adds 8MMs to your existing range at the cost of several hundred dollars) for an 85mm f1.2
Yeesh 1.2 ,somebody has money to burn
I love my 24-70mm 2.8 ii so versatile ! I've rented a 16-35mm and it's so beautiful as well!
How about.... instead of 2 minute Tuesday...... we call it Tutorial Tuesday? Just an idea lol
Or make it 5 mins friday
I don’t know what it is, but your color grading looks really good in this video, very satisfying
This is a helpful video. When I got my Mavic Mini I considered my M50, GoPro 7 and Mavic the Trinity of vlogging cameras.
The best lens is found on a 2002 Nokia flip phone 👊🏻
