    For a long time i used to think that you are a canon hater but today you proved how journalism should be done and how a product should be reviewed, you were not shy in admitting the good things about the camera and were very vocal about the things that canon did wrong in this camera . Nowadays every other reviewer seems so ungrateful and unexcited about new things any company releases as if it is no big deal and some on the other hand stick to a brand and just keep on justifying and defending whatever the company does. Thank you so much jared you did an amazing job.

      Funny thing is, if you watch their other videos, they often talk about using a pretty wide variety of camera brands on set. Some Canons for video, Sony stuff, Nikon stuff.

      Kandush Actually, another type of person sticks to a brand which has never let them down over decades of shooting, feels great in the hand and offers all that person needs. We do actually want some skill to come into the equation.
      If cameras end up getting every single shot perfectly exposed with little effort from the photographer, every single shot perfectly focused with little effort from the photographer and captures 120fps, so timing no longer matters, etc. then who would ever hire a professional photographer? It would mark the end of a profession other than in some highly specialised areas.
      I love the challenge of getting a perfect exposure in tricky lighting with no preview of the image before capturing it. Same with focus, especially of moving subjects. Aren't these the things which make photography fun and a challenge? We're heading towards a world of boring photography where skills hardly matter.

      cooloox - As much as I want to refute what you are saying I really can't, at least not how cameras are making it almost too easy. I think cost is still a pretty big barrier, you aren't going to see people dropping 5-7K on a body and a few lenses jsut to avoid hiring a pro to take their photos. I also think that the actual knowledge of what makes a photo great eclipses the bells and whistles that make it easier to get that shot. But, the easier that is, the higher the bar becomes to make a great photo. If anything, it might make it more competitive, but in a tedious way. A way that isn't fun. It's like HDR, once that got easier to do everyone did it. Now, there are tons of garbage HDR shooters out there and almost every camera has it built in, even cell phones. But there are still some really good shots too, ones that couldn't be done without it, and it was more the knowledge of composition that made the shots I like what they are rather than the HDR mode.

      Ditto! The exact same thing I was thinking while looking through a camera’s myriad of var. functions, adjustments, improvements, compensations and other life-simplifying "thingies", aka "features".
      Indeed, with these mirrorless "robots", the art of capturing beautiful imagery has turned into a flawless, sterile and impersonal "documenting" of the world around us.
      I often see photos by other photographers where everything is in perfect flawless sharpness, with even exposures and standard processing, looking like 10 million other cliche postcard-like banal "creations", that leave me bored and missing good ol’ times….
      During those moments I miss the grittiness and nostalgic raw look of B&W shots of yesteryear, that inspire and propel me to process my photos accordingly....
      Just like some article of clothing on an almost nude model, something needs to be left to the imagination, and, similarly, the exaggerated & processed artificial sterility often isn't what moves one's soul.
      Not every MWC (a man with a camera) IS a photographer.
      With the endless proliferation of more complex and feature-rich cameras, the photo world is over-saturated with all sorts of unthinkable subjects that camera swinging individuals rush to capture.
      Sadly, not all of them are true artists and masters of their craft and often rely on the latest gizmo in place of a real talent.
      Their results could be observed in millions on sites like Flickr, where they pour their "perfectly steril" shots in hopes someone acknowledges their "creative efforts".
      Similar to algorithms/presets-equipped robots, capable of composing only robotic-sounding music, or an auto-tune employed to correct /compensate for human shortcomings - they all make their “final creations” sounding dull, empty, void of life, generic and without a soul, that would otherwise touch the listener.
      …Correcting preemptively photographer’s lack of skills has the exact same results: photos that don’t move you and leave you indifferent…….

    Jared, been watching you forever. I really loved your review, better than a lot out there. I felt your were 100% honest, no bias, and just hit the points dead on, and accurate too. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that this isn't the camera for me, but the 2nd version of this camera you can be sure is going to be so much better, and Canon is watching and listening to all the comments in video reviews to make things better. Awesome review Jared ! Thanks ! I watched it all from the beginning to end. Mark over at the recipe channel. Chag Sameach !

      No sure what I believe but the sony view is that the sensor is covered by strong glass, whereas the shutter is quite delicate. Yes it means that need to clean the sensor occasionally but that's pretty easy and much safer than having an exposed shutter. An automatic cover could be the ideal answer.

    Jared, thank you very much for this excellent review. I appreciate that you looked at the EOS R as objectively as possible. Your preview-review has caused me to seriously consider this camera as I am pitting it against the Sony A7III. Its feasibility would greatly increase if the firmware update allows Eye-AF continuous as well as Silent continuous shooting. Hopefully they also either include exposure Zebras or fix the disappearing Histogram when shooting video. BTW, I am more disappointed that Canon excluded IBIS and full-HD 120fps than the one card slot.
    I would really like to know the following:
    1. Its performance in low-light indoor shooting. I saw the few shots you did, but the noise appeared a little higher than I would like, especially when compared to the A7III.
    2. The highest usable ISO
    3. Success of Smart Phone connection for GPS tagging
    4. How does focus-by-wire actually perform/feel for both photo and video.
    5. Performance of EF-S gold band lenses like the 17-55 f/2.8, 10-22, 70-300.
    6. What is the Megapixel value when shooting with EF-S lenses?
    7. How does the Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art EF mount (or other popular Sigma lenses) perform?
    8. Are CircPol & ND filter lens adapters weather sealed?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Hall I'm not sure if you're right regarding high ISO noise compared to the A73. High ISO can only truly be compared with the cameras side-by-side capturing the same subject in the same light. Otherwise, comparisons are meaningless. Why do I say this? Because I have shot images with a lowly aps-c sensored Canon 80D at ISO 16000 which were so clean I was amazed. I have an 8" x 12" print from a hand-held shot of a small child standing in the aisle of a cathedral with no visible noise unless you hold the print 4" from your nose. It looks like an ISO 800 print. But! I can also show you images shot at ISO 6400, so grainy that they're only fit for the trash can. ISO is extremely inconsistent in quality on all cameras when you start varying the ambient conditions. Ambient lighting conditions hugely affect ISO performance.
      There was a video preview of the A73 launch event where I kept wowing over the cleanliness of the high ISO shots being taken in low light UNTIL the reviewer showed one of the shots at ISO 6400 at 100%. It was an unusable mess and surprisingly noisy for a FF camera. I've seen some beautiful clean images at the same ISO from the same model of camera too.
      If you have access to an A73 then replicate one of Jared's shots: a person in a dark room, only lit by the screen of a laptop. Oh, and remember to shoot at ISO 10000. It would be interesting to compare.
      Also keep in mind you can downscale the 30MP image to 24MP and you'll instantly reduce the grain size (noise) by 20%.

    • @anthonyhall9453
      @anthonyhall9453 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @cooloox thank you very much for the thorough response. I appreciate your your experience and am glad you shared it with us. A lot of the photos I take are indoor events and the low light performance is important. I understand from the reviews that the EOS R focuses well in low light, but I just wanted clarification of its final image especially compared to the A7III because I am going to buy one of the two. I would prefer the the Canon because I'm already invested in Canon gear, but I'm not adverse to jumping ship if need be. Thanks again.

But that doesn't mean nikon cameras are bad just means there are differences and to see nikon had made improvements with video makes me want to switch back to nikon for the ergonomics that my sony doesn't have.

    the quickest and simplest way to move focusing points in the frame are with COMMAND DIALS. Main dial moves the focusing point/s left & right; secondary dial moves them up and down. the effect is the same as if you were using a joystick.

    • @kamizerox
      @kamizerox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suavecito6114 Here's a good explanation: Your friend and YOU haven't learned what makes a good photograph. It's not just a good camera or sharp lens that makes a good photograph. Cue, watch any episode of pro photographer, bad camera from the old digitalrev tv channel. You're probably just stuck in that pro cameras can make a good bokeh photo. But guess what? All that hides is what a good composition can be done and incorporating a background to it. A good camera can hide that you can't properly expose your shots because of its good ISO performance. Guess what? A very good lit subject and overall photo trumps any good camera even if you have an old crop sensor camera. Those flashes, reflectors, beauty dishes etc. are being used by pros for a reason. A pro camera can give an outstanding color depth. But did you know someone who edits their photos and can properly adjust HSL alongside giving the photo good temperature, tint, grading or even split toning. I've seen people with old canon crop cameras like t3i do better than me at edits not only from good coloring but also outstanding posing of the model. And oh you probably didn't even know about posing either. Let alone have your own style aside from letting the camera do it for you.

    I own 5D4, i found the traditional way of using the Dials to position the AF point much faster than the joy stick. You will need practice of cause.
    The reason is, joy stick move one stop on every click. Fine when using old camera with few AF point to select from. When you have thousands of AF point, it is slow.
    In contrary, the dials allow you to scroll through the points at much faster speed.
    I have not tried EOS-R, but with 5D4, you can do that.

I don't need 4K right now since I don't have anything that supports it fully, so this looks like a pretty good option. I'm so glad the screen swivel is back, because it makes it so much easier to use in macro and video. Not totally sold on it yet, but it's something I'd have to see in person.

    Hey Jared, gotta say loving the hair, I got to try this camera in London and managed the pair it to my camera connect app what I noticed is that you can set the camera to download the image to your mobile device as you shoot, individuals can weigh up weather this is a suitable for their needs for me I had raw on the card and JPEG’s on my phone. Doing events this can help for me to get images straight up on social media. Great analysis I was impressed with the performance of the ef 50 & ef 85 f1.2. And low light focusing.

    Thank you for an honest review of the pros and cons of this camera. I'm so fed up of seeing people that have clearly switched from Nikon/Canon to Sony, just going on every video for the Nikon Z and Canon R and just desperately searching for any reason to bash these cameras and justify their decision. Is the Sony AIII better at the moment? Yes. Are the Canon and Nikon FF mirrorless cameras bad? Absolutely not! And it took Sony some years and many generations to get it right. In a few generations down the line, I'm sure the Nikon and Canon FF mirrorless cameras will be something pretty special.

  • @avjake
    @avjake 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    You really cram a LOT of info into these reviews - great job. Canon did very well for the first model, but the second generation should be killer. BTW, all mirrorless camera/lens systems should feature stepless apertures, IMO.

    To be honest I was very disappointed with the base specs like everyone else. I thought this camera wouldn't go anywhere and Canon had dropped the ball. However, after your overview I have some hope. Maybe we don't look at this camera as the Sony competitor but as Canons first steps into intermediate/professional mirror-less cameras. Fingers crossed in a couple years they get caught up and we have more choices for great, new, high-tech cameras on equal playing fields.

      A thing many forget is that Canon launched a mount first, not a camera. The fact that it started something new, with good lenses at launch and the ability to mount any EF or EF-S lens is what this is all about, as in not much time we'll have a higher end body, and not long after that a successor to this one, and so on. Mount, lenses, ecosystem is what it's all about, not that this camera isn't beating the A7 line-up.

    I'm really conflicted between the Canon EOS R and Sony A7 III now since both will fulfil my needs but the Canon is more likely to work better with my lenses since it's a native adaptor and I'm used to Canon but the Sony is just so much better in several areas and is overall amazing. I'm mainly just a photo shooter so I'm not sure.
    Being conflicted is hard.

      Canon has the advantage of having a much wider mount than sony. so you'll be able to get lenses like the 28-70 and f1.2 and faster primes. Plus there are way more lenses for canon that you can rent and use to expand your creativity like tilt shift's, macro tilt shifts ( yes canon make these amazing things), fisheye zoom, microscope lenses (Mp-e 65) all these lenses are the reason i got Canon to begin with. It's more about the lenses than the camera. but even more than that, it's the photographer, so the more types of lenses the more creative possibilities.

    By the way, when the winds blow on the beach, salt spray is also in the air. That turns close-tolerance-machinery into a rusted, locked up state over (a very short) time. Most local photographers either get a longer range zoom lens or multiple camera bodies to side step this salty problem. If that option is available, it's "sneaker/feet zoom time," whereby one moves hither or yon as required. Otherwise, it's nice to know about the shortcomings of The Next Big Thing as I trundle along with "trailing edge technology" that I can afford. Also, I'm a STILL photographer who appreciates Image Stabilization, when available.

    I appreciate the video. I love the effort because I don't have the ability to go do this review. One statement that I think was a bit misleading was, "if you can't get shot in one shot, then you prob. shouldn't be shooting at all. " I think he was trying to say, "If you can't get the shot without relying on 'spray and pray' then you need to work on timing and frame accuracy". Cameras with high fps in stills are usually never maxed out in one moment by a pro. It is the small delay between frames actuating that is the benefit. I usually only need 2-3 frames for most moments shooting at a rate of 7-8fps. I'm sure Jared doesn't need many frames to master the moment either, he just explained it weird here. Also beginners may get discouraged too.. Any way thumbs up. Keep up the good work Fro.

    Saying that it is not intended for pros is BS.

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you consider a pro camera? The lenses are of pro quality but the price of this camera is not pro level. It's not even at 5D level of spec, and the 5D retails for USD $3500, whereas the EOS R will retail for $2300.
      The L lenses are intended for pro use, but they are obviously made to be matched with future pro bodies. The EOS R isn't one of them, though.

      Jack Smith - A7RIII is not 2000. That is the A7III, which is also not considered a pro camera, though it has some impressive specs and lots of pros have one. Those same pros have other models too though, since they know they can't really do anything rugged with the A7III, or really any Sony. They have a ways to go to get the build quality up to the level of the current market. Maybe they will, I don't know their plan.

    • @benlunsford4103
      @benlunsford4103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry, exactly I meant the A7 III. It has dual card slots and IBIS and as you admit, loads and loads of professionals use it. The only thing "un-pro" about is worse weathersealing than its competitors, but the same is true of the A7R III and the A9. Everything else about it exceeds the 5D IV, which was once considered "pro" but is now left wanting and in desperate need of an upgrade.

  • @budthecyborg4575
    @budthecyborg4575 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also note that the touch bar, by nature of having no moving parts, does not make noise when you use it. So anyone shooting video with an on-camera mic will want to use the touch bar exclusively while shooting.
    Ironically Canon already had this type of function on their rear control wheel on high end SLR's, so this isn't really a "new" feature for shooting Video on Canon, but it's good that they have it even without the classic wagon wheel control dial. (I kind of wish the EOS R still had the big old control dial instead of a Dpad).

I have a Canon T6s and it has the flip out screen and I use it all the time for landscape and astrophotography. Sometimes I have to have my camera low to the ground so the flip out screen is really beneficial to me. I wouldn't want to use this for weddings without a dual card slot but for portraits I think it would be fine because you can always reschedule a shoot if when you get home you find out the card went bad. I think Canon did a slightly better job than Nikon did with theirs. The next mirrorless Canon puts out might have the dual card slot and IBIS.

What percentage of viewers currently really view TH-cam in anything higher than 720p really? Also....what percentage of people viewing TH-cam have displays or TV's that can view 4K? Also, Canon's EF-S 10-18 is really sharp and inexpensive....should be fine for any Vlogger in a confined space...if they really want to film in 4K.

    Jared, with the always connected Bluetooth, wouldn’t the continuous transfer of photos act as your second card ... if you will? Don’t know if you can auto transfer raw though ...

      Stefan Mischook good point. Canon’s connect app usually just supports a low res jpg transfer but we’ll have to see if they updated that in this camera

    The camera has not shipped yet this is a pre production model. I am pretty sure they will ship it out with the firmware update in the camera. Stephen obviously does not understand how to use digital IS that is Built-in in conjunction with IS and the lens. I tried it and ran with it and it was hard to believe how good it was just as good as my Sony camcorder. Thanks for the review

      Your Sony camcorder doesn't compare with IBIS from the best in the market (Panasonic) unless your's specifically has the full floating lens (and sensor) stabilization, but if that was the case, no digital IS or lens IS could compare at all. Digital IS can be half decent when pared with lens IS, but nothing digital can compare to true IBIS, especially when you take into account the reduced lens complexity and stabilization of non-stabilized primes.

      @@TheTechnoPilot lol you are delusional the ax53 has far better stabilizers than any freakin ibis camera. Go check it out.

      @@camerasutra247 I mentioned Balanced Optical Steadyshot (floating lens and sensor), which is IBIS, but also suspending the lenses with the small sensor as well. No Digital IS cannot come close or beat it without super heavy cropping and even then, dealing with rolling-shutter warp is not easy and will be noticable where IBIS can avoid it all together. Also don't forget to take into account that heavier weight of the system will always dampen motion better then a lighter setup, so a mirrorless or DSLR with a big lens will always have an advantage, especially if you use additional points of contact.

      TheTechnoPilot You do understand that IBIS will crop your image, right? And that being said.. I’ve worked with shots from actually pro steady cams and we STILL have to digitally stabilize the shots in post. Yes. In this case Digital will always be better than mechanical. Every single time. Also, using these systems you will always get crop. So.. both systems have flaws. Not denying that having IBIS would be a good thing on this camera. For when your lens don’t have IS.
      On the other mixing IBIS and lens IS is not always the best solution since you might not end up with the stops you need. Many times is better to turn on of the systems off and not combine. The manufacturer should have a chart for this as well.

      No. This is officially a production camera according to Canon, they even handed out sheets of paper stating what were full production models and what was still pre production. They also said the firmware will arrive after the initial shipments. Digital IS is NOT the same and doesn’t come close to optical IBIS. I’m well aware how to turn on digital IS in the camera, but chose not to due to the ADDITIONAL crop it slaps on the already 1.7x crop and the terrible wonky warping that canon’s digital IS offers. Any real filmmaker using this camera would never turn digital IS on...

    I really got excited when Canon announced this last week. I still am exept for the cropped 4K. If the next version has full frame 4K I might be interested. All the other problems don't bother me as long as I can have full frame 4K with Canon's colour science at a good price like this camera. And of course the new lenses look amazing especially with the extra ring, It seems great to control the aperture. Is it stopped or fluid?

    This camera has a lot of good features. The adapter choices look outstanding! The flip screen is also great not only for vlogging, but for shooting very low-angle macros or landscapes, or holding overhead in a crowd. But with the crippled CF mode (no high-speed CF, no silent shooting in CF), it's no good for nature photos. Tony C echoes the single card slot as a deal-breaker for him as a working pro.
    If I didn't already have a 5DM4 and 7DM2, I'd still seriously consider it. I hope the next iteration addresses the issues (and adds IBIS). Then, I'll likely sell the 7DM2 and upgrade to the R2, or whatever they call it, as an add-on to the 5DM4.
