Just watched a bunch of your videos and picked up the EOS R! I am long overdue for an upgrade, have been using my t2i for over ten years. Thank you!!!!
fantastic video!! this video did it, I bit the bullet and ordered the EOS R this morning, I have been chatting with the canon live chat guys to make sure all my existing lenses would work and after watching this video im sold!
Id probably stare him out as well, vlogging is normal i guess, but having a camera recording yourself whilst holding another camera pointing forward i can imagine looks pretty hilarious.
This camera has so many weird limitations. I want C log. "Oh then you can't use auto ISO". Okay... Can I use 8 fps burst? "Oh yes you can, but you can't use autofocus". No thanks.
I think most of the limitations are just there to diversify the camera from the next models to be released - only the 4K-crop and the burst rate seems to be a performance issue which would need (at least) a second DIGIC 8 or a possible DIGIC 8+ to be improved on.
Ok, you have a point. Though I think that the 4k-crop that we are continuing to see is pointing to the fact that Canon is not ABLE to produce a full frame 4k camera with downsampling from 30+ mpx.
Maybe, but even if they could I'm not sure if they would - there is still the EOS Cinema line Canon doesn't want to canibalize with their stills offerings. Also I think DPAF with Full-Sensor-Readout would be a massive performance issue but they can't really release a new camera without since it is one of their major USPs ...
Canon never had the cheapest cameras of any market segment and always limited the cameras below their top offerings in one way or another - if you want the maximum feature-wise for the least money you were always better off buying something else. If you don't like their way of speccing and pricing cameras thats completely understandable but it has been this way for ages and I don't think it is "unfair" to the customer - you could always switch to Sony, Nikon, Fuji, ...
I have been watching your videos for a long time. I'm obsessed with photography to be frank and I'm equally obsessed with your accent and the fact that you're of Asian decent, but have an English accent. I hope that doesn't offend you, I mean no harm. Love your videos!
Your introduction says a lot about your great humour. That's very nice when what sets you apart is this nice and controversial ways of expression and not usual boring and linear way of showing on video what a spec sheet tells you. Not the most resourceful source but without a doubt the most entertaining ones.
There are a lot of problems with the EOS R but softness is not one of them, strange how so many youtubers tried to push that. You forgot to mention that you can't use the camera while its connected to a power bank or connect it to a power bank at all.. and the usb charger which you also cant use while the camera is on is $190. What is going on Canon, I don't want to buy Sony but even if your image quality is better there are so many drawbacks.
Well I am on the fence between selling my Canon stuff to go Sony, I have been looking all over youtube to see this fantastic Sony image quality everyone is talking about. I am trying to find Sony test video that is filmed more like Canon and by canon I mean the more filmlike, soothing image. But so far I haven't found it but it could be because how youtube search algorithm works. Sony can be charged from anything (power bank, regular usb charger and so on) so you never have to worry. If you have a link to amazing Sony footage I am all ears(or eyes).
@@somename8831 Yes it's the youtube algorithm. Here is some sample Sony 4k footage with a RX100M5, you can review their older footage as well from up to 3 years ago I recommend you check out the A7RII super 35mode. th-cam.com/video/3lwpSTkniEg/w-d-xo.html
Just got this camera, a year after this excellent video was made. Maybe it was a firmware update, maybe it's because I'm using American NTSC video settings, but none of the 1080p video settings discussed at 8:15 are grayed out when I throw an EF L lens on the camera.
so did you end up liking it, I think it is a big step up from their first mirrorless models, maybe the next version will be it, but I think as a portable camera this will be a great choice, because the thousands of AF points, the way to use touch screen to swipe from one focus position to the other, the 4k, this could be my 70D replacement.. or backup, or travel cam
Great review, as a Canon shooter myself I can't help feeling like all of their products leave you wanting one of their other cameras to pick up where the one you chose leaves off, because they all leave something on the table untill you are shooting the 1DX MKII or "C"series for video
Same equiv focal length, but with the crop, different actual focal lengths. But as I said, I tried different things, smaller aperture, manual focusing both. Same result.
I am new to the DSLR world, just got my first one.I got a Canon T7i with the kit lenses and i bought the 24mm pancake the nifty 50 and the 85mm 1.4.I am very happy with it and i look for your videos for guidance,so BOKEH to you!!😂 Thank you K!!.Oh,can you tell me of a TTL on a budget??,Thanks in advance!!.
I’ve made peace with the 4K crop, it can actually be a useful tool to get more flexibility out of wider lenses, but I am having a tremendously hard time falling in love with this camera (also the EOS RP) because of the added steps involved in accessing basic functions, particularly auto focus methods. On the R you need to fiddle about a menu to change modes, which is annoying. On both cameras there is no registered AF point, something I LOVED and relied on greatly with my 5Diii, so going from a single point to tracking modes requires at the least on the EOS R a separate button to toggle, and at the least on the RP a separate button and THEN a dial click, followed by a half press of the shutter. They won’t, but I wish they would, just add a registered AF point function to a firmware update so this camera can feel like a part of my hand and work quickly without a “check then change” work flow for AF methods. If I’m still complaining, the 5Diii has a ring finger button near the grip that could switch between one shot and servo by holding it, meaning you never had to use a menu to change them, and you never had to check with mode you were in to grab the mode you wanted, it was purely muscle memory and it was instant. Now on the R and RP I’ve got to hit a secondary button to toggle one shot to servo and back. It just makes the whole process feel cumbersome and slow, and it’s been a huge factor in preventing both cameras from feeling like an “extension of my body” if you will. It burns so many mental calories to pay attention to the auto focus with these stupid things. Please Canon, registered AF point 😭
The Eos R does 120 fps in 720 p, has a nice streamline single card slot, no superfluous in body stabilization, and lenses that are a bargain at $3,000. What's not to like?
The Softness in video comes from Activating Normal EIS or the Enhanced IS. Without any of those activated you get the widest and sharpest footage this camera can deliver.
@MLWATKK from what I have seen on my Eos r, activating enhance degrade a bit of quality and enhance plus further degrades quality. It also cropped in a little. I think it may be more beneficial to add EIS in post rather than in camera. But this I cannot test as I have no software or hardware that can do this.
@MLWATKK You can watch Matti Haapoja's review. He explained the softness and crop during Digital IS very well. I guess Canon's not very capable Processor is the culprit here.
7:12 Nice and clear! I'm not surprised that you have a nice clear image, since you are using the massive new native lens. The reviews I've seen where people complain seem to be when using other adapted lenses.
Great job on the review man, and thanks for talking about the negatives! So many of the reviews are passing them up completely and it's pretty ridiculous. Canon needs to realize that they are losing a huge chunk of their users and I feel like they don't even get it, that they can keep crippling their cameras to protect the high range. I don't think that works anymore. They need to update the firmware in this thing to unlock everything that it probably can already do and not just rely on "the next body update" to add those things, or the higher tier body, whatever they have planned.
I have this camera and love it! I DO NOT use the video function at all. The color science is excellent and it runs pretty well with my ef lenses. I still have my 5dmkii as my backup.
Can you do to the Canon EosR what you did to the Pentax K1, or wait for the worst weather on the beach and do lens changes to see how durable the sensor is.
Had an EOS R for 3 years now. Love the sharp images it captures and the colours. For photography, rather than video work, it is superb. My old EF lenses and AF work better on the R than on 5D iii.
If I'm wanting to upgrade from my canon 6D mki and want amazing AF (particularly in darker environments), and if I'm not bothered about video, is this is a go to option, over the 6D mkii?
Thanks for crop griping. Magic lantern might help vid, if magic lantern crosses over? Was the BMPCCUHD4U subconscious messaging to say it does a better job?
Good review Kai. Seems they have left holes in the software with this one. Do you think Canon will give us some firmware fixes? Or is this it? Or maybe the EOS RX will be released after A7S3 and LUMIX Sr-1?
I just watched this video full screen. I must compliment you on the quality of this video. It was awesome to view full screen considering it is on TH-cam. I also shoot with Canon. I have no interest in learning a different system. I will stick to my tried and true Canon's. While perusing the comments I see some go arounds to a few of the problems you stated. Perhaps they will address your concerns. I see I am starting to ramble on a little bit so I am going to take my leave of the comment section now. Great video Kai!!!!!!!
Hi Kai, a quick very specific question please. I hope you have time to answer. ;-) I have the 80D and you know the optional x3-x10 crop zoom in FHD1080 , right ? Now my question : Does the EOS R also have that x3-x10 crop zoom in video ? and specifically : cropzoom x3-10 only in FHD1080 or also in 4K , on top of the x1.7 crop factor in 4K ? Because for wildlife shooting , using my 600mm telezoom I would get x1.7 crop in 4K = 1020mm focal length but if I can add x3-x10 crop zoom on top of that then it would be like having a 3060-10200mm , shooting in 4K , which would even allow me to crop furthermore in edit to downsize e.g. to 1080 , thus shooting potentially at a monster tele of 20'000 mm or more.... sure, image quality will suffer beyond x5 and there's much air turbulence motion, but what's what video is all about, right ? ;-) hahaha... anyway, thanks if you have time to confirm if x3-10 cropzoom is also available in 4K. Greetings from Switzerland.
If you had to rank Nikon, Canon and Sony how would you rank them? I mean if you had three brands in front of you and you could only pick one camera which camera would that be?
You don't have to switch it to video. You just press record and it will start filming in the last mode you used. A good booster to get the EF lenses to EF-S would help :)
DanceTweety Looney Tune as a somewhat advanced video user, you want the ability to switch to different types quick and efficiently, most often 1080 120 vs 4K 30.
I live in London, you go to any tourist destination and there's expensive camera gear everywhere. Sure you wouldn't do that in certain parts of London, but you could say that about any city to be honest.
Could you try an EF lens with the RF adapter ? I tried this weekend with my 500 F4 L IS and a 300 F4 L IS and the stabilization was on all the time. Not good at all for the optics and bad for the battery... The canon rep had no answers for us.. Thanks you
The only thing Canon had accomplished by limiting video capabilities is letting loyal canon customers be introduced to different brands for their video needs, and NOT saving their "C" line-up. End of story
Hello Kai. I'm tempted by the change to replace my Canon 6d (version 1) but what else pulls me back is the adapter, because I have my EF lens kit that I do not want to replace with the new ones, I would like your advice; I have a 24-70 f2.8 L (version 1) that I refuse to stop using. Thank you very much for your contribution. Sorry for my English (I'm still studying) Greetings from Entre Ríos, Argentina.
In your opinion, what is the best Canon camera for wedding photography? Im looking into the 5D Mark 4, but if you think there is a better camera please let me know!
Hey Kai! I never read anywhere of the EFS lenses and no 60fps in 1080p mode. Are you sure you didn't do something wrong with the settings? Apparently there is the auto-crop mode when you put on the lens, and then a separate manual crop mode setting. Could you try that one and see if the options become available?
Recently borrowed an ES R and as a stills camera it is an impressive system if you can live without IBIS. Weird how this camera quirks start to make sense the more you use it.
Invested in the Canon lens system but I'm reluctant to buy anymore of their products. It really feels like features are missing not due to technical limitations but rather fear of pro gear sales cannibalization.
Just make a short video on using ef s lens ( crop lens) on eos R for video and photo. Many people are still keeping those lenses and expecting some one would help in making proper discision in the mirrorless age..
6:43 You mentioned there was no Zebras within the camera. The function is not called zebras, it is called focus peaking. I'm reading in multiple places the camera does have the function, just like the Canon M50 and Canon M5 mirrorless cams.
I'm facing problem with the EOS R, I am using the canon adapter with EF lenses which is: 24-70mm 2.8 II, 70-200mm 2.8 II, 16-35mm 2.8 III when using AF tracking with zooming in and out my camera keep freezing and I have to either turn Off/On or unmount the lens and mounting it back to get it to work and this is happening with every zoom lens I have. did you have same issue or just me? Thanks Kai
The R has the same focus assistant system than the C200 😅 Found this out by myself and almost no one is mentioning it... But I think that’s amazing! That C Log is only useable in complete manual is strange... But maybe this is because you have to expose so differently?
I'm trying to buy a new camera and I was thinking about the MKIII or the Eos R, the MKIV being a bit too expensive for me. Can someone let me know which one I should go for ? It's mainly for photography. Thanks !
Is there a reason why the mirrorless cameras are built with a different mounting system than normal dslrs? I feel like there'd be alot less hate and way more eager testers if they didn't have to buy a new set of lenses or adapters
nice review as always, i personally ditched canon years ago because of the high video compression and line skipping they never bothered to change for years and still nudging the price up!!! unless the consumer was willing to splash out 4-6k on the 1DX or 1DC....i was NOT. I did notice 4k 10bit with 422 colour external recording ? they have done it? im going to pass out! also @3min 36sec im surprised that woman never got a toff screaming at her for sitting on that vintage car and scratching the paint with her zip.
The problem with M-Fn touch bar is simple. By not providing any tactile feedback it breaks one of the simple rules of ergonomics. A rule that Canon has done a very good job of adhering to until now. If you are going to use a "button" without looking, there must be some auditory or tactile feedback.
I've bought an old Minolta f4.5/70-210 on Ebay for my A7rII (which is quite old but still better than the newest Canon) which is only 91mm long and weighs only 334g. The f1.7/50mm Rokkor is even smaller! Remember the good old x700 days, when FF photography was reasonable small and light? And yes, IBIS is a must have for these old pocket money lenses.
If one wanted to purchase a camera mostly for video but photography also, would one recommend Mark IV or EOS R? (same price btw) Also is it easier to deal with the crop factor on the EOS R?
Hello. I have one 6d and from yesterday I have a new EOS R. I use Sigma ART 35 and Canon 50, Canon 85. I made some tests for ISO performance with same settings and I saw EOS R is equal with canon 6d up to 6400 ISO. Why? I was thinking EOS R is better than 6d and is equal with 5D mk4 at ISO performance. It is normal ? Or I have a bad copy ? I know 6d was a very good camera for ISO performance but 5D mk4 was better and EOS R has the same sensor like 5D mk4. Wha it the problem ? So I must to return the camera to service ? I had the same light for tests and same objects. I have the latest firmware. 1.6 . Thank you !
Canon should allow the Tinder app on the Canon EOS R, so that the swipe thing on the camera makes sense.
😂 I'll probably but it for that .

Get to use one of these at work, it’s awesome.
Impressed you walked around London with an expensive camera whilst filming, brave guy:)
I live in London, you go to any tourist destination and there's expensive camera gear everywhere. Sure you wouldn't do that in certain parts of London, but you could say that about any city to be honest.
Londonistan
Pussy. People don't get mugged anymore. You clearly aren't from London.
@@wanderer10k umm.. yeah.. ok then ..
@@RobBob555 He's walking through the extremely busy tourist area of Notting Hill....but I guess you knew that already. Still scared though eh?
So I’m not sure where you stand on this new EOS-R camera? I mean will it support your weight and how do you balance on the thing?
for the EOS R, 24-105 IS or the 24-70mm f2?
Black magic pocket 4k review coming soon?
A camera at a cost that you could have it for video and have another camera solely for still photography.
Could you try an EF lens with the RF adapter ? I tried this weekend with my 500 F4 L IS and a 300 F4 L IS and the stabilization was on all the time. Not good at all for the optics and bad for the battery... The canon rep had no answers for us.. Thanks you
The colours on this camera are amazing
That "facepalm" at the end of the video is pure gold XD
I want to start doing portraits and possibly weddings. I really wanted to get this. I don’t do hardly any video. I think I’m buying the 5D iv
I don’t know which one is best ? Between canon 5D Mark iii VS Canon EOS R ?
One of the best reviewers out there!
Ok idc about the EOS R i cant wait for that BM Pocket CinemaCam 4K review
I'm facing problem with the EOS R, I am using the canon adapter with EF lenses which is:
24-70mm 2.8 II, 70-200mm 2.8 II, 16-35mm 2.8 III
when using AF tracking with zooming in and out my camera keep freezing and I have to either turn Off/On or unmount the lens and mounting it back to get it to work and this is happening with every zoom lens I have. did you have same issue or just me?
Thanks Kai
What about third party EF lenses for crop sensors. Like the sigma 18-35 f1.8? Does that maintain all your frame rates and AF?
How about doing a review of this body using the adapter and trying out some older EF lenes?
I remember Gordon from his CameraLabs reviews back in the day. Wonder if he's still doing reviews
Is there a vibration inhibitor in the walls and bores of electronic granules Is suitable for portrait photography ?
I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Lumix S1 and S1r do in comparison.
The R has the same focus assistant system than the C200 😅 Found this out by myself and almost no one is mentioning it... But I think that’s amazing!
That C Log is only useable in complete manual is strange... But maybe this is because you have to expose so differently?
Well for me jumping from canon eos 5D mk II hey can't complain you know.
I'm trying to buy a new camera and I was thinking about the MKIII or the Eos R, the MKIV being a bit too expensive for me. Can someone let me know which one I should go for ? It's mainly for photography. Thanks !
Have you set the gymbal to follow your face ? Is it possible?
Which should i buy? Fujifilm XT3 or this cannon?
I still have the banding problem on the EOS R in low light... What should I do because I can't shoot at 1/125 and faster...
Hey Kai! can you tell me what are you using for you vloging camera/lens?Thanks.
Still the best in bloody game! Love ya Kai!
Do they plan to reduce the rolling shutter in 4K with a firmware update?
When’s the Black Magic pocket 4K review coming??
Is there a reason why the mirrorless cameras are built with a different mounting system than normal dslrs? I feel like there'd be alot less hate and way more eager testers if they didn't have to buy a new set of lenses or adapters
Next Firmware Upgrade ... EOS R with dual pixel will get those computatoinal features like Pixel 3?
I have punch of Canon EF lenses. What would be the best Canon dslr body for handheld videoshooting (vloggin etc.)?
nice review as always, i personally ditched canon years ago because of the high video compression and line skipping they never bothered to change for years and still nudging the price up!!! unless the consumer was willing to splash out 4-6k on the 1DX or 1DC....i was NOT.
Can we just appreciate the guy at 9:52:
Purple Capri pants

And a spongebob guitar.

2:13 I thought you were a little soft, then realised the video camera has picked up on the background, which is crystal clear.
On the lens size, isn't there adapter plates for normal canon lenses to mirror less ones
The auto iso doesn’t work in video mode ? Or also not for stills in M mode ? If I would buy one I need auto iso in M mode for wildlife photography.
Thank you !
Thank you Kai. Always a vibe.
