    I really liked this review and I've seen a lot of EOS R reviews on YT lately. It was concise and got right to what is important in shooting video. The only thing I disagree with is saying Sony is just about where Canon is color wise. I just used the a7III for a major brand shoot and while it is a great camera (esp. for the price), I still think Canon has an appreciable edge where color science is concerned. As a TH-camr I don't want to spend a ton of time with color correction and LUTs in post. The Canon is the only camera that shoots video you can use right off the card (as long as you light/expose properly). That's still a big deal to me.
    EDIT: Also, in terms of the UI, I'm sure Canon has a big advantage. Sony has a horrible UI - so many sub menus and overly complicated options. Canon is far more intuitive to navigate.

      I agree on the difficult UI from Sony, I don’t have one, but I’ve learned that there are custom buttons that you can use to jump where you need to and for what shooting purpose, I guess that helps?

    A significant plus for the EOS-R for pro shooters is that most of us have several thousand dollars worth of glass in our kit. That alone makes the EOS-R a very attractive option, but combined with the fully articulated screen means that Canon will sell a lot of these and the generation 2 version is likely to address issues that come up with generation 1, like the rolling shutter and hopefully the 4K crop and card slots. I am waiting for gen 2 but would have few concerns about buying the current model if I really needed to buy another body just now.

    Seems the Sony A7iii is still the camera to beat, especially for the price. Ibis, 4K no crop (in 24/25p), 1080p 120fps, great auto focus, great battery, small and light etc. you said it, the Only thing the canon has as an advantage is the flip screen. Work around on the a7iii is to connect your phone to the camera and you can see what your filming, but it’s not ideal. I’m keen to see Sony bring the a7siii and hope it has a flip out screen

    • @NickGranville
      @NickGranville 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tenerio Kazuro that’s a commonly held theory that only vloggers use flip screens but it’s simply not the case. A flip screen is hugely beneficial for any photographers who shoot high, low, weird angles, and for video it’s useful if your shoot on a gimbal. Of course vlogging is the most obvious use but not the only use. If Sony added the flip screen to an A7iii they’d have the almost perfect camera. Maybe they’ll do this on the A7siii

  • @adrianvanleeuwen

    Even in 2022 the Canon R remains a choice to get over R7 (priced similar). The advantage being full frame sensor better for low light and shallow depth. The 4K is cropped but using the Canon 10-18mm stm (crop lens) works well with it and image looks sharp in good light. Unfortunately going the R6 is another $1000 in Canada, so I can see why some people like me are considering the Canon R. Also the bit rate in HD 1080P goes up to 180mbps so great for grading if using just HD. The R and RP still remain popular cameras on a modest budget. Regarding IS, I think there is a Digital IS enabled in camera that can help along with the lens IS for the R in video mode. The color was a bit more accurate with C-Log grade over the Sony video. Granted the Sony has 4K FF while Canon does not, however I would likely use HD more vlogging.

    I have a few important points that were skipped as to why I am actually considering the EOS R. First of all I have a ton of canon glass because I'm in video production and higher end cameras within reach use canon glass as the major standardized glass on ef mounts. Also there is a bigger market for buying used EF lenses and selling them easier since they work for many cameras. When you go to rent a c300 mark II or a 1dx mark II or a red or buy an ursa mini 4.6 etc all those times it pays to have canon lenses whether EF, L line or Cine line. And I tried using canon glass on sony's and it was super unreliable so that is not an option. Here I can use all my glass and buy more glass that will still work with my c300 mark II and red if I buy one and with my 1dx mark II. Also the skin tones where way smoother and more flattering on the canon in your video when you compared so that is a big difference. Also Sony batteries are terrible so that's annoying that they dont last much and Canon usually last much much more and I can use batteries from my other cameras. also sony's record 4:2:0 8-bit internal while canon records 4:2:2 8-bit internal so canon has much more color resolution. Sony does have a different advantage of hot shoe mic that records with no wires through the hotshoe which I use on an a6500. Also Sony menu's are a nightmare. Anyway that's what I would add. They all have about the same dynamic range (all I mean A7sII A7III 5D4 EOSR which are what I'm comparing when I buy for travel use and recommending for budget camera).

      Do you need a burst rate of more than 2.2 FPS when shooting c-raw with AF? The 5D mkIV seems like a much better photo option if you want to stick with Canon. (And it can be found for the same price as the EOS R if you look around.)

    This is the most helpful and well put together comparison on TH-cam. Truly, the content, production quality, and style of your videos is my favourite. And you have a lot of expertise to make the content worthwhile. So thanks.
    It may come down to preference, but having seen the A7iii reviews from DPReview, Kinotika, and many many others, the colour science still looks lackluster. Matti Haapoja commented the same thing with respect to SLog 2.

      Given that the crop is a must for the 4k video, why to pay for the extra glass.... Now we can go back to the quality of picture extracted from the lens, since the crop is highly affecting Vloggers (due to the length limit of their hands) and based on the 30M sensor (6720 x 4480), I do not see any major diffrence between EF-S 10-18 for example and the cropped EF 11-24 in providing 4K image (3840x2160) for this particular use that justify the 10X price diffrence.

    Why didn't you use the Canon 16-35 lens as you did on the Sony for vlogging? You used a cheap Canon 10-18 lens instead of the Canon 16-35mm. That was not a fair comparison. Lenses matter. Canon makes a 4L and a 2.8L 16-35 which would have matched up against the Sony as opposed to the cheap quality 10-18mm lens which is not the average vlogger would use with the EOS R. Sometimes I feel that people give too much value to flipout screens. The money you save with the A7III you can buy a external monitor. Conclusion was spot on, but the A7III requires less after work, the canon requires too much corrections to be equivalent to the a7III.
    Sony downsides:
    _ color -> correct in post
    _ rolling shutter -> correct in post
    not bad IS -> correct in post
    Canon downsides:
    _ less sharp -> sharpen
    _ 4k crop -> cannot correct, buy another lens
    _ more rolling shutter -> correct in post
    _ no IS -> correct in post
    _ unusable 120p -> just don't use it xD

    Could be wrong, but when you turn on in-body stabilization, the lens stabilization is deactivated. If it wasn't you'd have some funky stabilization feedback that would look shitty. The stabilization is not compounded when you have an in-body stabilizer + lens stabilizer.

Compared side by side, I thought the Sony one looked super shaky on the left and right of the image, more so than the Canon. I also have a Sony a7iii and not a Canon EOS R, and wouldn't trade for all the other reasons why Sony is better, but the lens IS alone on that Canon looked hella smooth. I wonder if part of it is a weight thing, and the Sony is more bumpy in the wield itself. @dasaauto2024 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just like Sony did with their a6300, the severe rolling shutter is fully designed in to protect higher end cameras. It’s one of the most intentionally engineered “feature” to keep Pros away. And it’s unique to the physical sensor. No firmware update can fix RS sadly. Canon simply doesn’t want anyone who takes video seriously to buy this camera. They even admit it. I don’t know why people smash their head against a wall for no reason. Fuji, Panasonic, Sony- they all make really good cameras with top notch video features (both inexpensive and expensive- Canon won’t budge until you hand over $7,350 for a C200).

    Umm, you showed different parts of the frame for the 1080p test (at around ~1:55). You showed a window on the left that specifically has a ton of moire on the canon shot, but didn't show that window on the Sony shot. Why not just show the same part of the frame?
    Both of them show moire on the window that is shared between the 2 shots. On the shared window the moire is VERY SLIGHTLY more apparent on the Canon, but this could be due to the white balance on the Canon not being as yellow, and the moire showing up as a yellow tint which could be more hidden on the more yellow Sony shot. You could show the window on the far right and then say the Canon is way better than the Sony with moire, since moire is REALLY bad on that window with the Sony and barely present with the Canon. Especially considering the window on the right is WAY larger in the frame.
    The issue with this particular shot is that any moire pattern is going to be subject to frequency and in this particular shot the window pattern shown in the Canon shot has a frequency that doesn't work well with Canon's anti-aliasing implementation. Again, look at the window on the far right and THAT window doesn't work with Sony's anti-aliasing implementation. I think that Canon actually has STRONGER anti-aliasing filters, which is why you don't see the aliasing much until the pattern becomes VERY tiny in the 3rd window. The Canon's anti-aliasing seems more useful (the stuff closer to the camera aliases less), but we'd need more examples from different angles and distances to really tell.
    The comparison, as far as moire, is bogus. Enjoyed the rest of the video though!

    it’s not simply the color, Sony footage has issue with luminance, graded or not - look at the rough highlight rolloffs on the face. And it the same issue with raw images in my experience but, of course, it is far more problematic for video. Also, it seems that the 4k footage was done using ef-s 10-18 lens on 5div which will never give a sufficiently sharp 4k footage compared to something like 24mm f1.4. As far 1080p, I am not quite certain that Sony has a lot more detail, it’s just more sharpened out of the box which kinda makes it look more digital than cinematic. If you are using standard profile on Canon, you must dial contrast all the way down but the best picture style for video is Canon’s studio portrait - available to dowload for free from Canon’s website. It has more dynamic range than any other built-in profile and does not require any grading (make sure contrast is at least half way down). The correct sharpening setting for Canon video is 3. 50% unsharp mask can be added in post for crisp look. And most important, Canon’s IPB codec is much better than ALL-I because it has much less aliasing/artifacts.

    • @baubergo
