    So, the A7 III has two card slots, clearly superior dynamic range, autofocus and burst rate, better video quality, a larger selection of quality native mount lenses and isn't hampered by that total waste of a slider bar control. Yet, you lead off the video saying you can't decide between the two.
    With respect to a casual shooter, they should use their smartphone for selfie videos or vlogging. Get the Sony for everything else. It's the clearly better camera for both stills and video.

    • @Falcrist
      @Falcrist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I think he says there's no winner because both cameras have features that make them non-starters for certain kinds of shooting.
      The lack of a second card slot makes the Canon a potentially ruinous choice for wedding photographers.
      The lack of a flip out screen makes vlogging with the Sony basically impossible.
      Also, if you currently use Canon cameras, having the Canon lenses with a Canon adapter is a HUGE benefit for the EOS R.

    • @johnverity5365

      I think people starting out in Full Frame will probably go straight to the Sony, or maybe wait for the Panasonic, the only people trying to decide between the Sony and the Canon are existing Canon shooters who've invested in a lot of premium glass.
      The MC-11 works ok at shorter focal lengths but it still misses shots, I wouldn't use it for anything important. Since Canon don't have to reverse engineer their own mount, their adapter is presumably closer to native experience.
      I've heard that the Sony 70-200 f2.8 G Master for example isn't as good as the Canon equivalent, and costs more, so the Canon shooter has the choice of spending thousands on replacing their lenses, some maybe not quite as good as what they already owned, to gain better dynamic range (which may be a big deal for some, less so for others), better auto focus and better eye autofocus.
      I don't think it's a clear-cut decision by any means.
      I've currently got a foot in both camps, love my A7R III, but not planning on replacing all my glass any time soon, if Canon up their game in the next generation I may well be tempted back!

      Bill Ferris for stills the Canon is better. It can give sharp shots at 6.5 stops with a 2 seconds exposure hand held! A fully articulating screen with 2 second handheld exposure is a wonderful combination.

    • @kyletaggart
      @kyletaggart 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Bill Ferris 100% agree. The only reasons I see people getting the canon over the Sony is flip screen, owning canon lenses, or brand loyalty. The Sony is CHEAPER by hundreds of dollars, and better in so many other aspects.

    • @Davitor1
      @Davitor1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Went for the Sony the first chance I got, switching from Canon after 10 years. Not saying there isn't a learning curve, or that everything is better, but it still feels like stepping 5-10 years into the future. Just finished a wedding with 2x A7III and an A7RIII, the AF is in another league, and the eye af and excellent tracking make the portrait session and things like low light wedding reception dancing photos a breeze.
    Thanks for non biased review. Apart from the flippy tilty screen, for professional work the canon looks quite inferior.
    Now really the only two things I'd wish in the A7III would be a bit more ruggedness / weather sealing, and that excellent silent shutter of the A9. But still, it is a perfect workhorse, not missing a beat in any of the weddings I've shot this year.

    To me where the Canon EOS R fails is the massive crop factor when shooting video, so if you are going back and forth between shooting video & photos you have to completely reframe to get the same shot in the two different modes. I still find it hard to believe Canon did that.

      Yeah, maybe last year. But This year, Canon is releasing the R5 and R6, while it seems the A7 IV and the A7S III are being delayed indefinitely. Anyway, even if they were coming out, the R5 is the most anticipated camera of the year. Boy, I'm glad I waited for the Canon mirrorless system to mature a little, before wasting money on a Sony system. Sure, the eye autofocus seems great, but the video recording on the Sony A7 IV is rumored lousy 4K 30, the Canon R5 is able to do 8K 30p and 4K 60p no crop, with internal video recording. Plus, it's made in Japan instead of Made in China, like the Sony. lmao, the lenses are way higher quality in the Canon system too. Man, people saying Sony is "better", for a lot of people the R6 is going to be better than the A7 IV would have been. Man, it's a monopoly for Canon this year, and the big announcement event is later this month online.

      BROis yeah lol, too bad they don’t give you the option to go full frame in 4k. Canon’s constant crippling of their camera basically helped me make the switch an easy decision, and there are lots more like me. They don’t want to cannibalize their cinema line, but now they’ve lost a Canon lifer instead.

    • @brois841
      @brois841 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      They aren't crippling on purpose, they just don't have the processor/technology for it at the moment. At least according to an interview with their execs. They also considered using IBIS, but couldn't deal with the heat. Trust me, these companies aren't looking to get beat by someone else just to save another line... I just don't think they have the resources at this stage to deal with the things it took Sony YEARS to innovate/develop and test in the marketplace.
      I was watching an interview with someone from Sony and they mentioned that the insanely quiet/fast/accurate motors in the Sony 400 f/2.8 were actually the same technology they've employed for IBIS. They've since put that same AF motor into the Sony FE 24 f/1.4 GM and I'm sure future lenses will enjoy all of those innovations.

The LCD screen is super sharp and high resolution compared to the Sony. I'm no pro-photographer, so those are just my minor opinions but I'm happy with the purchase.

    I am a Canon shooter and I think the R is a bad first attempt at FF mirrorless. Bring back the joystick, put 2 card slots in it and sensor stabilisation. Then fix the eye AF and take off the AA filter. Only then will I buy it. In the mean time the Nikon Z looks much better. If Nikon only knew the potential of a proper ef to z adapter, they would make it their first priority.

Canon has more glass to use natively, better for vlogging, has far more AF points and from everything I have seen, far better AF performance for non action. Once Sony brings out lots of big glass and it doesn't cost $12k then maybe people will think Sony is the clear cut winner in everything.

    You confirmed again what I have always experienced. Canon has terrible shadow noise. Again and again my 6D lets me down when shooting at night. 3 stops of shadow push is nothing, and thus I have to mess with various tricks in post. WHY can't we have a quiet sensor, Canon? And if it will be noisy (as all sensors must be at some point) why can't the noise be more random, stochastic? Then I might just leave it, as it would have a film like quality. But the color bands and blobs are WAY harder to clean than luminance noise. Just SO DISAPPOINTED. I guess Canon designers never shoot at night! That makes Sony the clear winner. Because what you said is basically this: the cameras are pretty equal, but avoid shooting in such and such situations with Canon. Case closed. Not being a vlogger, Sony is where I am heading!

    Holy moly, Northrups. I'm a fan of your channel (I even paid for SDP) but this is just an embarrassment. Unless a flippy screen is your NUMBER ONE priority (the only thing the Sony flat-out can't do) there really should be no circumstance where the Canon should be recommended over A73.
    Apparently you're recommending this (edit: Canon) for people "If you're a new casual shooter without any particular camera" even though what "new, casual shooter" is buying a $2,300 camera??? but you also concede that EYE AF: "[CANON] Canon EYE AF is unusable", Silent shooting: "[CANON] Essentiaully useless", Action AF: "[CANON] It's one of the worst sports cameras I've ever used". Why??? Because Canon EOS-R menus and viewfinder are slightly better. :o WTF?? I can't even wrap my head around this recommendation.
    I'm not a pro. Just an enthusiast and I use these features ALL THE TIME. I volunteered and took class pictures for my kid's school. Guess what? I used Eye-AF and friggin' killed it. I shot pix for my cousin's wedding. Silent shot her whole walk down the aisle (/w AF at more than 2 fps). Mind boggling how you discount these actual features that get you better pictures over subjective things like "slightly better body-feel, menus and viewfinder". Maybe the menus or VF aren't as good but the Sony doesn't have "useless", "unusable" features.
    So, according to you, a slightly better form factor/menus/EVF are more important to new shooters over (probably) best in-class Eye-AF, Motion AF, Silent shooting AF/etc/etc. This video is just crazy-town to me... :(

IMO, I think that even new shooters will want to eventually try Eye-AF, Motion AF, Silent shooting AF but if you buy the Canon you're SOL because they're "useless" and "unusable" but that's just me. Video autofocus at low resolution (we know canon is the best at that). The autofocus if frustratingly slow, there are almost no lenses. It’s a single camera system st the moment. Sony no longer has only expensive lenses , you can get native lenses from. Sigma. The Sony is a proven system , the Canon is new. I frankly fail to see why recommend a normal newbie that camera. I found one big problem with A7III (and all a7)
    If you close down the aperture in low-light situation, the autofocus performance will be severely crippled.
    Because when you do (F8 and above for example) the auto-focus will initial WITHOUT opening up to a brighter aperture like EOS (at brightest aperture) or Nikon Z does (at medium aperture).
    You will run into this problem when
    1. Dark studio environment while using smaller apertures, the focus will confirm slower and miss or simply hunt.
    2. When shooting for example group photos with smaller apertures in poorly lit environment, the focus will be noticeably slower or hunt a bit (you need depth to get everyone in focus).
    I have test this thoroughly and I am 100% confident that this is so far one of the worst problem you could run into for stills.
    Please try it yourself by
    1. Set any target in a room slightly poorly lit (does not have to be severely under lit)
    2. Focus at that target at maximum aperture, notice the speed.
    3. Focus at the same target in that same room with the same light at F8.
    You will see what I'm talking about, it has been a huge hindrance in my work both in the studio and at wedding and events that I had to sell off all my gear after just under a year of moving to Sony.

    So Tony, let me know if I'm way off with this summary:
    The Sony wins for native lens selection, autofocus, video recording options, dynamic range, FPS, silent shooting.
    The Canon wins for overall lens selection (with the adapter), resolution, the image stabilization, and ergonomics (unless you're back-button focusing).
    Additionally:
    If I were doing professional work, the single card slot would make the Canon a non-starter.
    If I were vlogging, the lack of a flip-screen would make the Sony a non-starter.
    If I were just starting, the sony would definitely win the comparison, but if I had Canon lenses, I'd almost be FORCED to stick with Canon.
    I AM just starting. I DID pick the Sony. I have to say I'm pretty unhappy with my decision in that this is FAR too expensive a camera for me right now.
    However, I *_AM_* happy with it compared to the other new mirrorless cameras. Canon and Nikon both seem like they're going to be playing catchup for a few generations.

      Guys, I know you think only TH-camrs want this feature, but they aren't the only ones. I've had my camera near a wall or a place where it was a pain to walk around and get my head back there. You can flip the screen and show the subjects so they can see what they look like and how things are framed. I have many examples when I found it useful, but the point is it's about choice. Fuji's system allows for the same up/down tilting that Sony has, but also flip-out for anyone who might want it. So simple and ingenious.
      Another thing I like about the flippy screen on the Panasonic GH line of cameras is that you can flip it around to protect it and throw it in a bag. Always nice to have a choice and I honestly like Canon's screen.

      I am pretty sure that the only Fuji camera that has that currently is the new budget Fuji x-t100 and that is the best system with the best of both worlds, all other Fujis with a moving screen are like the Sony. But if I had to choose between the sony style or canon style screen it would be the Sony one because it is more discreet in public/street photography and the screen is closer to the controls, also you can use an external monitor if you really need to see yourself. Also because the screen on the Canon flips out to the left, it means you have to cross your hands over if you are right handed and hold the camera with your left hand and want to use the touch screen with your right hand while it is flipped out and tilted up or down.

    Subjective, but it seemed that the Canon video looked a bit more pleasing (to me at least). That said, no IBIS makes it very difficult to consider the Canon, as I have a ton of vintage glass I want to leverage with IBIS.

    I got a different message from this video than what you probably intended. What I learned is that cameras have gotten so good these days that really we compare their capabilities in more extreme specific scenarios than in the most practical scenarios. Obviously some will say that these are their typical scenarios but for the vast majority of others these limitations between the two cameras is a wash. It gives me great hope that I can continue using a 3 year old camera body for several more years since nothing that major has happened in the technology that necessitates the upgrade. Now if they make a camera that has an ultra sharp zoom lense that goes from 24-150mm f1.8 constant and is smaller than a coke can we will be in a new era of photography. Obviously this can’t be achieved by physics with current camera technology, but I believe one day there will be a way to do this and it will be a good day.

I shoot mostly wildlife, birds in flight and landscape and still use all of my Canon L glass. Don't have any Sony native-mount glass yet. I would say that the focusing is about 90% there using adapted Canon glass. It does struggle a bit from time to time. I can confidently say that after seeing what has been released by all the manufacturers in the last month so, I am still very happy (and relieved) that I made a good choice and would not consider a switch from the A7R3, at this point in time. Im stuck between these two cameras right now. I don't have any prior lenses for either system. Used to have a nikon dslr but sold it and decided to change systems.
    I hardly do any filming, just photography. Im not a complete beginner, but still got a lot to learn.
    I photograph only for me personaly; our pets a lot, children, some landscape and want to start doing some street photography. Maybe, depending on which direction life takes, i would want to do pro photography.
    What speaks to me with the canon is the canon colors (looks a lot better and that has big weight for me), the more ergonomic body, the backscreen. Im not loving that the rf lenses are so expensive, and that they are so restrictive against other brand making rf lenses. Of course there are adapters for ef and maybe they will open up for more brands. Really love sigma art lenses.
    With the sony, they have so many lenses from different brands to choose from which is good, eye AF for pets, two card slots (i have never needed it though), longer batterylife. On the negative side, i dont like their backscreen and it seems less comfortable to use. Their colors are less pleasing to look at. I havent really done any editing of raw yet but I hope to learn.
    I think im leaning more towards the canon.. which camera is best for the photography i want to do and the best camera/system for me to grow with?

    After returning to photography after a 15 year break I was blessed to try out both these cameras before deciding. The reviews I Read and watched all favoured the Sony, but I came to the conclusion that like other electronics most reviews and comments focused on raw the technology not the art. In my opinion, the Sony was simply a joyless to use, confusing menus, shocking ergonomics and a really awful reputation for after sales service should anything go wrong. The better performance by the Sony at the margins was not enough to negate these issues as the Canon R provided vastly superior user experience in the field.
    I eventually went with the canon R. Was it the best technically? Probably not, but it’s ergonomics were superb, it’s wireless and Bluetooth made backups instantaneous, no need for another card, menus and ease of use were intuitive, the lens range was extensive ( even the couple of 15 y.o. Lenses I own worked) and I picked up a couple of second hand ones really cheap. Finally it was a joy to hold and use, like an old friend.
    I would venture to say that it will outsell the A7iii due to Canon’s reputation and ecosystems, and they know their market better than the bloggers on TH-cam who often are ‘influencers’ who say what they are paid to say...and Sony are famous for this.

      Don't forget the dual card slots in the Sony. That said, I sold my a7riii and downgraded to the eos r. I'm a lot happier with the eos r mainly due to the grip comfort and general ease of use. Picked up the RF 15-35, RF 50 and RF 85 and have been blown away with the IQ. It's a lot like the PC vs Apple comparison. Sony packs their cameras with top tier specs and options (PC) while Canon uses a more intuitive ecosystem approach (Apple). Can't really go wrong either way.

    I am deciding between both as my first pro camera. I'm extremely biased to choose the Sony because it's the camera that made me start looking at taking photography seriously. But a lot of you are saying the Sony won everything. After watching some other comparison videos as well, I'll have to say the Canon has MUCH better colors, C-Log is better than S-Log, and the VIDEO AF on the Canon IS much better and faster and more consistent. However, the Sony has much better AF for eye tracking when taking photos. I also think the Canon is better for 1080 HD videos because of the color. For 4k if you don't have the right lense the crop is obviously a disadvantage. I still think I want the Sony more but I need to do more research and have yet to compare to Nikon or other popular mirrorless models yet.

    • @krisw7312
      @krisw7312 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing 1st generation is perfect. Granted, they (like Nikon) had a few years watching Sony and both 1st FF Nikon and Canon mirrorless are way better than 1st Sony but they can't bridge the gap completely. And the competition is always like that: the newest product from one brand is better than other things on the market until someone else introduces their new product. Both Nikon and Canon have features that competition doesn't, including Sony. Now think back a few years - what was your wish list for camera features? I bet all cameras have more today. We always want more, nothing wrong with it. It's a matter of setting your own list of important features and picking which camera is closest to it. Because many of us have a bunch of lenses, we will most likely stick to one brand. Just maybe not jumping on the first generation of mirrorless but waiting a bit more. I bet like Z6 and Z7, Canon will have their higher end mirrorless soon that will address some shortcomings of EOS R.

    • @KyrosX27

      I guess that's the worst part. The competition has been out and it's not like the specs are hidden. They have the bar they have to beat and it seems like they didn't really make an overall better camera. Yeah, it's good in some and bad in some but, if you knew beforehand another person was gonna be wearing the same thing as you, why would you show up still wearing those clothes?

    I wonder why Sony's Eye-AF is only available as a custom button assignment, rather than just another Focus Area option which can be activated with either a half-press of the shutter release or an AF-ON button press.
