  • What a game this was, one of the best regular season games from the golden 80's NBA.
    37-year-old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 40 points on 16/29 (amazing skyhook display) against 24-year-old Ralph Sampson and 22-year-old rookie Hakeem Olajuwon.
    Sampson finshed the game with 33 points and 15 rebounds (13/22) and Hakeem Olajuwon scored 30 points (14/19 FG).
    Lakers won the game 113:104.

      It's impressive what Kareem is able to do at the age most centers are long retired. This is before private planes and the softening of the league.
      In Hakeem defense he was in his prime physically but he didn't have the experience to handle Jabbar. The only way to play him is to deny him position and hope his hook is off.

    These "Twin Towers" games are pure gems. Wonder how they would've done against Robinson & Duncan if both duos competed against each other in their primes.

    • @popeyeisgood
      @popeyeisgood 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      my guess is that the rocket duo will have the edge on the spurs one. sampson has the length and speed that could cancel out d rob ( too bad we never saw that form of sampson) and olajuwan in prime was clearly much better than duncan in his prime imo.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      popeyeisgood Hakeem definitely proved that he could embarrass Robinson in the playoffs. So it's really a question of whether Duncan can cancel that out against Sampson. It's hard to gauge the latter's potential given his short career, but it looks like he's the weakest defender out of the four.

    • @popeyeisgood
      @popeyeisgood 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** but match up and playing style wise, i think hakeem should be on duncan and sampson should take robinson, dont you think?
      and yes no doubt sampson seems to be lacking some d compared to other 3.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      popeyeisgood I guess that makes sense. Even if Sampson struggles against Robinson, it's safe to say that the latter's offensive stats decrease quite a bit in the playoffs anyway. So it really comes down to Hakeem and Duncan. And yes, I think Hakeem would dominate like he always has against other great big men.

    • @cflo1386

      @@Johnkoth Absolutely Akeem was the best player on the court in thar series. He was dominant on the glass and he created havoc defensively because he was playing power forward guarding Kurt Rambis. He could come over and help Sampson when Kareem came into the lane.
      Olajawon put the league on notice that he was the next great one. Kareem played a good series also but he couldn't get up with Olajawon. It's a tough ask to have Jabbar deal with those two guys at 39 years of age.

If it weren’t for injuries he would’ve been an all time great. Never seen somebody his height move so gracefully and with so much skill. He is the original Victor Wembanyama. Wemby just plays more perimeter oriented and shoots 3’s. Other than that Ralph had all those same skills athleticism & agility. 🔥💯

    Wow @ 5:06. Sampson got a legitimate block on a Kareem skyhook. However, it was a lazy, slow left handed-one; not Kareem's deadly patented "swing-left shoot right skyhook." But still, it was a clean block against a very difficult shot to block. Chamberlain's blocks against Kareem's skyhooks were arguably goal-tends, while Sampson's block was clean.

    • @mcentepede
      @mcentepede 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a legitimate block shot....however people forget handchecking was allowed back then, Sampson obvsiously put his hand/elbow on Kareem to manipulate his balance, thus the awkward looking "lazy" left hook shot. But no doubt it, that was a blocked shot.

    • @mcentepede
      @mcentepede 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At 5:33....they tried to do the same thing, push Kareem off with the handcheck to get him off balance when he does his Skyhook thing....but the referee called fouled that time. You are not allowed to handcheck in today's NBA, nor be in the shooter's vicinity while he attempts a shot, automatic foul now. Back then it was rarely called

AND they still would've had the 1st overall pick in 82. Probably still would've gone with a SF, but who knows whether Worthy or Nique in that situation. Either way, Larry Nance Sr. Look him up. Olajuwon was truly dominant amongst other TEAMS, not just other centers. I watched footage of Kareem from the 70's against Willis Reed and other great centers of that time, and Olajuwon would've ran circles around them. I held my tongue for years out of respect for the all time greats, but none of them were ever the raw talent Olajuwon was and still had the kind of skill he did with the best footwork. hands down.

      Yep, this game(and the rest of the Olajuwon vs Jabbar games) were pre ESPN and Fox Sports(let alone NBATV or NBA and TNT talk shows and web sites). But hey, WE GOT TH-cam baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sampson blocked the sky hook at 5:06 while he was guarding Kareem. There are guys who can get a running start and block the sky hook from the weak side, but there are only about three guys in the history of the planet that would ever be able to block the sky hook while guarding Kareem.

      Ralph Sampson, Wilt Chamberlain, and Young Pre Injury Sabonis.

      +Sal Amander Ralph Sampson=yes. Chamberlian=yes. Sabonis? Hahahahahaha, hell no boy!! Sabonis wasn't a high flyer or a good shotblocker. Sabonis struggled against a 20 year old David Robinson(still in college) and never blocked a shot against THAT David Robinson. I'd realistically say that other than Wilt and Ralph that in their defensive Primes that Olajuwon(88-91), David Robinson(92-94), Dwight Howard(08'-10'), Mutombo(92-95), and Shaq(99-01) would've blocked at least one of those Skyhooks. But Sabonis ,hahahah, hell no. I'd nominate JaVale McGee as a candidate before Sabonis.

      +Sal Amander Manute Bol also blocked the skyhook straight up defending Jabbar, but 7 foot 7 inch tall guys don't exactly grow on trees,lol.

      No way in hell number 2 at best or 3rd best centers ever. Wilt was on another level even as a old man with a bad knee he shut Kareem down in the playoffs half the time when they played against each other. If Kareem faced a 50 goals per game prime Wilt Kareem would have retired lol.

      @@chonasimpson6487 that’s such cap 🤣🤣🤣 Kareem outplayed him in both WCF in 71’ & 72’. Bro he put 50 on his head one time. Kareem is the better scorer and playmaker, and their defense is a scratch to me. And you know who has the bigger weakness between the two 🤷🏾‍♂️

      @@tyjohnson3111 No crap Wilt job then was defense you can not say he was better cause he scored more wilt dominated him when the Lakers won in 72 and in his prime he would have schooled him. Kareem never had the records Wilt had Wilt will always be the goat. All Kareem had was the skyhook and a old knee injury Wilt blocked it many times. You must have forgot Wilts roll was on defense he was told not to score but when the reporters said he could not score like you think he went on to score 60 58 and 48 look it up. The last 7 years of his career he focused on defense and if they counted blocked shoots he would have that record also .Did Kareem average over 50 points and 25 rebounds for a entire season well Wilt did .Did Kareem score 100 points in a game well we know who did that lmao. Kareem was good but he was no Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain the best that every played.

      Wilt’s TSA increased way more than Kareem from regular to postseason and he became WAY less efficient…especially from the field.
      (-8% FG% & -9% FT%)
      Kareem essentially maintained his PPG, his volume, and TS% from regular to postseason when facing Wilt.
