Sampson and Rookie Hakeem vs. Jazz (1985)

  • Hakeem had 32 points on 12-19 shooting, and grabbed 14 rebounds. Sampson had 23 points on 10-14 shooting.
Rockets despite being up most of the game lost in the end due to poor FT shooting (50%) and committed a lot of turnovers.

Ralph Sampson had a 9'11" standing reach and a 36" vertical leap, and Hakeem Olajuwon had a 9'6" standing reach and 36" vertical. Sampson could almost touch the top of the backboard from a standing jump and easily grab the top of the backboard with a running or one step jump.

Geez, I'm still impressed by what Sampson was able to do on the court when he was healthy and motivated. Most athletic 7'4" player I ever did see (pre-injury Sabonis comes mighty damn close though). They really should've placed him at center and move Hakeem to the PF spot. Maybe that would've extended his career a bit. As of today, the closest the NBA has to an actual "Twin Towers" combo is Pau Gasol/Andrew Bynum of the Lakers. Both LEGIT 7-footers with big-time skills...

Possibly but Sampson's body failed him. Had the Rockets stuck him at center, all that banging may have brought on the injury sooner. Just speculating.
Also, from what I see, Sampson wasn't as proficient as Akeem was at posting up at this time. Samson seemd to float further outside in order to show off his skills (jumper and dribbling). See him leading the break off the defensive rebound? That meant he wanted to show the entire package, while Akeem was content to play center.

Their 84-85 defeat to Jazz is worse than Jordan losing to Milwaukee or Boston from 85-87... This was no excuse... In all honesty the Twin Towers 🗼🗼 gave up two series they had little business losing... 84-85 to Utah, 86-87 to Seattle... I still can't make sense how they lost these series'.... Veteran composure of the Jazz? Depth of the 87 Sonics?
Can u describe the truest factors in depth?
Hakeem played extremely well in most of these games and I don't believe had clutch failures outside of the punch of Paultz in this series and his rookie year free throw shooting woes... 86 he stepped up hugely vs Los Angeles and took over the series from Game 2 forward and Sampson pressed on firmly alongside him... He played valiantly vs Boston in 86 Finals and Sampson had his ups and downs... Some very strong moments even for Sampson in that series... Vs the Nuggets and Kings and Blazers I'm guessing Hakeem and co. we're comfortable around Hakeem's leadership to gel behind his strong and confident performance...
But what did namely Seattle in 87 do to avoid the loss to Houston of 86-87... Houston was the better team no? They had the experience, the players, Sampson and Hakeem still even if Sampson was at his crossroads...
Sonics head coach I know was applauded for his management of the 87 Sonics roster during the playoffs and vs Houston. I'm rewatching the Hakeem era closely these days. Trying to familiarize myself with his career as much as I was comfortable with Jordan, Ewing and Barkley's career trajectories and primes and team circumstances and playoff opponents, rivalries and their big games and clutch moments and weaknesses and regular season storylines and momentum shifts.

    • @alecsanderhamilton9224
      @alecsanderhamilton9224 ปีที่แล้ว

Not that the Jazz didn't have a low key good roster... Dantley, Green, Griffith, Eaton, Bailey, Stockton... They had scorers in Dantley (a league leading scorer along with Wilkins, Bird, Aguirre, King, English some of the best SF's scoring forward wing power forwards to ever play and some of the greatest scorers ever) Griffith (an excitable offensive player along the likes of future Stockton running mates Hornacek and Jeff Malone) Green could defense and make plays like his contemporary point guards Dennis Johnson, Maurice Cheeks, Norm Nixon, Nate McMillan, Fat Lever etc.) Eaton is an all time shot blocker (Hakeem should have had his 1989 DPOY 🏆 but oh well) and Bailey was a long version of James Worthy, alot like a softer gamed Buck Williams or an inside Clifford Robinson, or offensive minded Horace Grant, or Cedric Maxwell or Robert Horry before the death of the mid range game in the NBA.
Utah had a quality franchise before Stockton and Malone arrived they were simply the pinnacle and longest fabric used to make that 20-25 year stretch run as long as it did but the fabrics were beginning to assemble quite nicely even before the Stockton and Malone combo helped kept it threading for as long as it did.
83-84 thru 85-86 the Jazz played in two semifinals rounds in 84 and 85, 86 they lost first round with a tag team Bailey, Dantley and Malone forward triplet unit... And 87 they readjusted again around Karl Malone and Bailey and 88 Stockton and Malone was very real... And of course they made the semifinal again before reverting back to zero in 89 & 90 and then their golden age of the Stockton and Malone era began round 91 into 92... Coincidentally when Magic Johnson left as well to give space to the other dominant point guards in the league.

    • @alecsanderhamilton9224
      @alecsanderhamilton9224 ปีที่แล้ว

George Gervin and Julius Erving were still strong in 84-85 as well. The Small Forward position in the NB80's was ridiculously deep. That has to be the strongest position hands down of that decade and era... I mean even Barkley is a Small Forward at times throughout his career.. those names plus Barkley... The post was a coveted office space occupied by many talented Small Forwards playing big and with strong elbows ..

      @@alecsanderhamilton9224
I strongly disagree with the sentiment you posted drawing a parallel to Jordan and Chicago losing those years to the twin towers losing in 85 and 87 (since I've seen on many threads from other posters that bring up the simplistic argument that amongst HOFers only Jordan never lost with homecourt).
The 84-85 Jazz were 41-41 but their record was very misleading because Dantley missed almost half that season injured and would've been better with him healthy. When healthy he was definitely a top 5 SF during that era (and as you mentioned there was a glut of high scoring SFs that span). Dantley would later help spearhead a Detroit team that beat Chicago too. Would've surely been Finals MVP in 88 had Detroit won. And the Twin towers had major problems with the presence of the much stronger and taller Mark Eaton. He was 7'4" 285. (When in Jordan's career was he ever matched with a guy 5 inches taller and about 30 lbs heavier on defense?) He blocked a NBA record 5.6 blocks a game that season that has yet to be surpassed almost 40 years later. The best versions of Hakeem himself and David couldn't come close to such totals. Nor even Dikembe or Ben who were strictly defense first players like Eaton. He was impossible to back down on post ups. He averaged almost 6 blocks a game and who knows how many more shots he altered as well?
Basically you're asking a developing rookie Hakeem to come in and put a mid 90s level beatdown h2h vs the greatest rim protector in modern NBA history from the get go vs a more experienced Utah squad. And they lost game 5 at home by 7. In a season they improved big time. Of course pre injury Sampson was ahead of the curve to Pippen as a player but at the end of the day Jordan and Pippen didnt immediately take the NBA by storm in terms of advancing far in the playoffs from the get go either.

      @@alecsanderhamilton9224
In 87 first off they caused a minor upset to beat the emerging Blazers out West that year to get to Seattle.
Hakeem shot 60% FG in both rounds in 87.
In NBA history only Kareem/Shaq amongst Centers have ever posted a 30ppg/60% FG series. And other than them amongst all players only Michael Jordan himself has ever had a 30+ppg 60 % FG series. That's extremely rarified air (pun intended).
McDaniels (when his head was screwed on right lol) Chambers & Ellis were a very good offensive trio. Not sure how many teams in history had three 23ppg or better scorers on their team.
And you didnt factor in that in both 85 and 87 Houston (just like Jordan's Bulls those years) was battling behind the scenes drug problems. Lloyd and Wiggins were thrown out the league during the 86-87 season and Houston basically had to figure out the rest the year how to make up a combined loss of 24ppg a night. The previous season where they made the Finals they had to figure out how to make up losing Lucas and 15ppg. Imagine midway through one of the the 96-98 Bulls seasons someone like Toni Kukoc missed the rest of the regular season and playoffs. And then another season between 91-93 both John Paxson and BJ Armstrong are kicked off the Bulls and in both cases nobody was around to replace them.
They were 42-40 vs 39-43 Seattle in 86-87. I think the " had no business losing" label regarding Houston...is a stretch. This wasn't some LBJ vs Dallas in 11 or 04 LA vs Detroit. Eliminated putting up a 61/62 Wilt level 49/25 game on the road in a double OT game.
Hakeem may have had a bad individual performance like 90 vs LA but Houston during his time imho didnt lose series they should have won or played down to the level of their competition. Maybe 97 vs Utah could be argued and that's it imho
Houston under Hakeem was never some overly talented powerhouse team that had the favorite moniker to begin with.

I believe 84-85 Eaton did rightfully deserve the award for the #6 seed Utah Jazz... Olajuwon was a mild version of his later defensive wizardry... And he had Sampson's prime athletic assistance here in the post. So Olajuwon was not yet otherworldly credible to have deserved this honor over Eaton. Although I do believe already he was the best defender in the league, Eaton just the most intimidating shot blocker... But Eaton's 5.6 bpg was something special to commemorate with a trophy 🏆
In 85-86... Alvin Robertson was a freak.. statistical anomaly... With 3.7 spg... But he was on the 85-86 lowly Spurs. He wasn't even a member of the respectable defensive squad Milwaukee Bucks yet... Hakeem was the no. 1 defender on a top 5 defensive unit in Houston in 85-86. He led the league in blocks and steals and he played more extensively than Manute Bol while managing more offensive workload than Bol. He defended more ferociously and aggressively and versatilely than Eaton who came back down to EARTH with his shot blocking. Houston was a no. 2 seed, Division Champion 🏆, eventual Western Conference Champion 🏆, and NBA Championship Finalist... Playoffs not counting where Hakeem's defense actually accelerated in effectiveness... He still was further evidenced from 84-85 to 85-86 to be the best defender in the league.
Furthermore what is shocking, I believe they hated on him bcuz he was African, a former soccer ⚽ player, or a teammate of another no. 1 pick Ralph Sampson bcuz apparently and maybe it's a statistical error by basketball reference.com bcuz I can't believe it unless David Stern and Adam Silver and Hakeem Olajuwon and Alvin Robertson themselves could confirm it ... But I don't think Olajuwon even got any DPOY award votes his first two seasons in the league as if he was banned from ballot recognition in order to ensure a less usage offensive player role focused defensive minded player got the award... Bcuz it makes no sense that at the least Olajuwon got a lion's share of the DPOY award votes for his performance defensively in his first two seasons. Olajuwon in year 2 had a defensive season stronger than Kareem in the 70's defensively in most if not all his Bucks and Lakers 10 seasons in the 70's during his youthful dominant prime.
Hakeem was almost immediately a defender like no one else had seen and it is almost as if it was disallowed to communicate such fact aloud in the NBA until after Jordan sold a certain amount of units of Jumpman Nike gymshoes
So u can argue Robertson's 3.7 spg was freakish enough to deserve the 86 DPOY award but also you can as easily argue Olajuwon was also a deserving 86 DPOY 🏆... And that would be no. 1 for him in 2 possible seasons.
    I would revise,
    1984-85 🏆 Mark Eaton
    1985-86 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
    From
    1984-85 🏆 Mark Eaton
    1985-86 🏆 Alvin Robertson
With the future Defensive Player of the Year Award namesake Hakeem Olajuwon, not yet an honoree despite leading the league in defensive stops average... And second in total volume stops defensively.
    1986-87
Michael Cooper wins the DPOY 🏆 award...
This one is the first real perplexer with all respect to the hustle guys , in your face lockdown defenders, long armed, guys who could guard Jordan, Drexler, Bird or Magic guys 94 feet and "make em work". To the guys like Dumars, and Rodman, and Cooper and Moncrief and Dennis Johnson etc...
I think even Moncrief was more of a defensive playmaker than Cooper or Dumars or Rodman.... So I don't want to disrespect the worth of any of these guys defensively... But Cooper doesn't even register in 86-87 as a defender... Among the vote getters, he is less disruptive then near all of them. He doesn't seem to even deflect the ball, knock the ball out of bounds, strip the ball off kneecaps, force travels, take charges, force turnovers like a good 30% to 50% of the eligible NBA players secure in their team's 7-8 men rotations..
I mean Jordan in 86-87 was scoring 37.1 ppg and rebounding 5.2 times and averaging 4.6 apg while stopping the basketball or turning it over 4.6 or so times a game in 86-87 and he doesn't even get the DPOY 🏆 award in 86-87.
Oh yeah and Olajuwon is no. 1 in block in steals straight up in average and total volume for the 86-87 season. He is already outright the best defender most active defender and most consistent defender in the league by year 3.
With his 23 ppg to Jordan's 37.1 that's the only area he lacks best two way player status to Jordan after maybe taking it from him in 85-86 with Jordan's injury absence. But Hakeem is the greater defensive threat already by year 3 then virtually anybody who has ever played the sport.
86-87 is my 2nd trophy 🏆 for Hakeem Olajuwon
    1984-85 🏆 Mark Eaton
    1985-86 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
    1986-87 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
    Maybe u can even go
    1984-85 🏆 Mark Eaton
    1985-86 🏆 Alvin Robertson
    1986-87 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
But Hakeem after his Finals appearance in 85-86 and Sampson only playing 43 games in 87, I believe Hakeem had established himself by himself outside of his co-anchor's conjoined shadow.
Hakeem was the man, Sampson was the sidekick as was being established even in 85-86 with both healthy and confident and aggressive.
Michael Cooper hardly played more than 30 mpg if that in 86-87 for he best offensive team in the league. And he won DPOY for keeping the energy the first unit established in games. Cooper is a nice all time role player... He looks sexy as a sleek running coyote 🐺 too sheepish to be considered the Dobermans Pippen and Jordan always were, and Cooper could run and Slenderman slamma jamma and pop the occasional open clutch threes....
But the man was NEVER EVEN POSSIBLY a defender the likes of Olajuwon, Jordan, even Barkley. He had very little thunder ⛈️⚡ clap defensively
At least Alvin Robertson harassed the ball 🏀... Cooper watched it real closely with James Worthy and Magic Johnson picking pockets and Abdul Jabbar boxing out rebounds for Rambis, Worthy, Magic and Cooper... The 86-87 DPOY 🏆 is the first joke 🤣 told at the NBA award ceremonies and it's charity for the Lakers who must have bought a lot of seats at the charity event
1987-88 belonged rightfully to Air Jordan on top of 35 ppg he led the league in defensive stops 🛑 per game 4.8 and total volume defensive stops 🛑... Bulls were 50-32 and a top defensive unit I believe and Houston was 46-36 first season without Sampson...
    1984-85 🏆 Mark Eaton
1985-86 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon or Alvin Robertson
    1986-87 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
    1987-88 🏆 Michael Jordan
And even still Jordan very well probably was the certified best two way player in the NBA by 86-87 & 87-88... But Olajuwon was still tied with Jordan at his peak defensively in total stops 🛑 per game... So you can still conceivably argue Olajuwon could have won the DPOY 🏆 award even in 87-88 for what could have been very realistically his hypothetical 3rd straight in just 4 yrs professionally
How Eaton had 2 DPOYs in Hakeem Olajuwon's career is a travesty even if Utah was a 2nd seed with a strong defense in 88-89 Eaton's 4.3 pales to Olajuwon's prowling 6.0... in 85-86 with Houston 2nd seed and a carbon copy 51 wins as Utah in 89 were, why wasn't Olajuwon eligible for the award in 86 as Eaton was in 89? And Olajuwon averaged 5.4 to Eaton's 4.3 in 86 to Eaton's 89 campaign....
    Unjustified....
    1984-85 🏆 Mark Eaton
1985-86 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon or Alvin Robertson
    1986-87 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
    1987-88 🏆 Michael Jordan
    1988-89 🏆 Hakeem Olajuwon
He could have 2,3 or 4 @ this 👉 point. First 5 seasons. No less than 2 minimum and he somehow had zero... And this is a gentleman the league would eventually name the award after retrospectively... Hakeem was putting up defensive numbers like Jordan scoring titles. The award should have been his to lose from 86 onward

1st,i said "maybe" for that non-usa hypothesis and it's not the only reason that i gave.2nd,it doesn't matter if jabbar did it late in his career,3rd,for this video,it was not a vicious punch there is a clear explanation,4th ewing was american all his career,5th stockton case is different since he was not as great as olajuwon, who is not THAT popular because he is not THAT famous.usually when younger fans discover him, they are surprised that he is not more talked about...and they love his game.

second thing that i disagree is when he says that is the reason he is not that famous."dream" isn't as famous as celebrated as some others BM because the nba didn't marketed him that much.. it was all about magic and bird and then jordan's shadow eclipsed everybody, and then hakeem won but ewing and robinson were still more celebrated, exposed in the media,so maybe the fact that he wasn't american had something to do with it.but jabbar threw some bad elbows or punches too...it was happening a lot.
