That's true, Kareem was amazing. But that was an Olajuwon who had just learned the game of basketball about 5 years earlier
Remember, olujawon hadn’t even reached his peak at this point. He was spectacular but even better in the 90s.
I grew up in the old SW conference area, saw Hakeem from day one at the University of Houston. He was strictly defence & rebounding. His offensive game was practically nonexistent.

The NBA on NBC was good but the NBA on CBS was better especially with Stockton doing the play by play 🔥
@@element-mc5zp Same here, I forgot to mention, I think TNT has much better NBA coverage also. I wish they could do the NBA finals.
Imagine Stockton and Fratello together, would have been awesome...

The intro got you hype for basketball. Plus, CBS gave you 3 games on Sunday

Yeah. They got swept 4 games in a row, after winning the first one in the 1986 Western Conference Finals, where Olajuwon dominated Kareem offensively/defensively, and the entire Lakers team defensively in his 2nd season. Look it up/go watch!!
Kareem was so old in this game. He's still hung in there with Olajuwon.
It helps that he had two HoF teammates in Magic and Worthy to help shoulder the load.
If only Hakeem had that kind of help....
10:37 can anybody show me their favorite center catching a pass on the run and then immediately goes into a one dribble spin move that forced a foul on a 1 vs 3 fast break like Olajuwon just did? Cuz that's the kind of stuff that inspires video games and superhero movies
@Hakeem
Yeah. I peeped that move myself, even when it didn't result in a basket. That was crazy, indeed!!!
@@msl5253 He was doing that late into his career even when the Rockets had those ugly blue jerseys.
Hakeem would dominate in today's game. He would have better footwork than anybody. His handles would even improve in today's era bec centers today are no longer discouraged to bring down the ball or operate from outside the paint. He was a good perimeter and FT shooter which means he got a shooting touch that alot of centers dont possess. So i expect him to shoot well from the 3pt arc like embiid and jokic. His fundamentals and IQ are top notch. He's the all time leader in shot blocks and if u have AD leading the league in shotblocks today there's no question that Hakeem will be leading the league in shotblocks for multiple seasons. And lastly, the dude was mentally and physically tough.
@@peterstark4562
Yup!
All that/Agree!!!!
His greatness, starts with his defense, as he was top 10 in steals all time as well (he many not be any more, could be a 12 or so)? So, no matter how great he was offensively (and he was a versatile; effective; stupendously gifted offensively player for sure). His defense was equally good, if not better. Similar to Bill Russell, his blocks are only a small reflection of the amount of misses; steals; turnovers; deflections; re-directions, etc., that he actually caused. He was like a Human Cyclone on defense that extended to the three point line.
Most of the guys, who are considered (whether right or wrong, I say wrong) "greater" than him by the corporate press. They, don't understand the amount of effort he applied on defense, regarding any longevity (along with not consistently playing with great management; coaching and teams) and how it effects your scoring stats. If he mostly concentrated on offense (as so many other of the great scoring centers), think about how much longer he could have played? He controlled the game defensively, better than any player I've ever seen. And offensively, he was constantly double to quadruple teamed from his 2nd season onward. So, he dominated the proceedings on both sides of the ball better than anyone. Most idiot press members, don't know this. But many of the all time players do, and have called Olajuwon the best player or Center they've ever seen (or at worst, put him in their top 2-3-5). This includes: Bill Russell; Bill Walton; Shaq; Kobe Bryant; Michael Jordan; Cedric Maxwell-who called him the most dominant he ever seen; His coach Bill Fitch (who coached, Parish; McHale and Bird), etc., to name a few.
That ridiculous Herculean effort so many of us saw in 94-95 (that the press labelled "the best basketball we've ever seen"). Many Rocket/Basketball fans saw the same display during the 1986 playoffs onward, in between. It just took the rest of the press, country to catch up with what we already knew. Hakeem was a DOG Supreme!!!!
Wow....no 3's!
Actual good halfcourt defense!
A.mix between going to the hole and mid-range.
Hakeem ,a center playing like a point guard
This was Kareem's last year in the NBA, the Lakers were hoping to send Cap into the sunset with a Championship but both Magic and Byron Scott got injured and were unavailable in the Finals vs the Pistons.
This was from 1988. Here's one from 1989: th-cam.com/video/NjYfbow9QIU/w-d-xo.html
That game had 3 of the top 10 greatest players all time!
Poor Kareem lol. He should not have been guarding that man at that point in his career.
The NBA has to go back to the NBA on NBC and CBS style intros to the game much better than what's being done today
We need the NBA back on CBS or NBC! Disney has long overstayed their broadcasts!
That’s interesting bc w/ nbc using celebs as a desperate attempt to improve olym ratings i was thinking espn/abc & nbc ought to switch sports coverages
Someone needs to bring the sky hook back, such and effective move.

They were balling
Larry Bird and the 80's Celtics had the harder road, having to deal with Dr. J's 76ers and Isiah's Pistons. Magic and the Lakers really only had The Rockets to deal with.
Dick Stockton has be to the best nba announcer 🔥 His voice makes every possession dramatic lol.
Put This Game On NBA TV Hardwood Classic On TV
I see Magic play in alot of these games and the way people talk about him you would swear his passing was perfect he makes some of the worst passes ever like a middle schooler decision making 😬. His defense is no where to be found..smh
The only team to beat Showtime in the 80's was the Rockets in the playoffs. They beat the Lakers in the first round in 81 and 86 in the semi's with the luckiest shot.
The Pistons beat the undermanned Lakers in the 1989 Finals 4-0! Also, I've been a Lakers fan for years, but even had Ralph's Gm #5 final second shot not gone in, the Lakers still would have been down 3-2 going back to Houston. Gm #6 would have been difficult; they possibly could have brought it back to The Forum for #7, but no guarantees!
@@edkiely2712 and 1983 and 1984 as well... but I think he meant out in the West.
Lmao that lucky shot ended series in 5 Rockets were up 3 to 1 with Lakers having home court advantage!
The Western Conference was pretty weak in the 80's. Basically like how the Eastern Conference is today. I don't think the Lakers would have won as much if they'd had to go through the grind of playing in the Eastern Conference against the Celtics, Sixers, Pistons, Hawks, and Bucks. The Lakers were still a great dynasty though.
Kareem was past his prime,he know Hakeem was one of best centers in NBA.Plus Lakers offense was through Magic at that time
Clearly hakeem was more skilled had more moves(not even in prime yet this year)
Kareem older, yes..still relevant and not crippled..would have been same if Kareem was younger..Hakeem was just more skilled than any center..didn't have the wins, championships etc than some but "individually" best on both sides of the ball..to many moves for any center he ever faced..still holds most points in playoff series for any big in history..(37.5) 1988..he really hit prime in 91-95..I had pleasure of watching him from 1985 on..his skillset was incredible..nobody could ever guard him in an iso situation..had moves over either shoulder..blocks and steals leader for any big ever....jump hook..mid range..footwork..could shoot the 3 but rarely did in those days..my #1 big ever..his playoff stats back that up..played in toughest era for bigs and overall talent as well..
@MDBBall kareem couldnt guard hakeem in any game of any era..plus Hakeem is only 6' 10,"..I met him personally and lived in Houston in 80s and early 90s..saw him dominate all centers he ever played against..flat footed 60s and 70s centers would never be able to guard hakeem moves or even shaqs power moves..facts..

kareem looks more muscular later in his career. did he start lifting weights?
Storytime: During the summer before the 1986-87 season, Coach Pat Riley went to the GOAT with his plan of asking Magic to look for his shot more. So for the team's first time
since 1974, the Lakers #1 scoring option would not be #33. Getting that news at almost 40 yrs old. Kareem that summer gained 25-30 pounds of muscle- while lowering his body fat. This was
because he wanted more bulk in his legs for positions against the younger post players. This is why you see him bigger in this clip & any from his last 3 yrs. After Magic
went on to win his first regular season MVP award , in the championship clinching game 6 against the Celtics Kareem with the added weight at 40 yrs old put 32 points on Parrish & Walton.
