I feel like there is some connection to the jump in pregnancy/motherhood/religious horror and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The SC decision was two years ago which is around the time it takes a film to come together and be released.
You should do a tier list for all the horror movies that came out this year! So many bangers and I want to know which ones I should introduce to my friends.
I had zero intent on watching VHS until you mentioned Kate Siegel and Mike Flanagan then i was like “dang it guess i have to watch the whole movie for that one”
'Sleep' has already been released in the UK so I've already seen it and it was one of my favourite movies of the year! However, be warned; the promotional material is selling it as a horror movie but it's really more of a genre mash of romantic-comedy, thriller, and horror (with a lot more emphasis on the comedy than most people will be expecting). Again, I loved it, but other horror fans might be disappointed. (p.s - the relationship at the centre of the movie is really adorable. It made for a surprisingly good date movie).
Good to hear. It's maybe my last big anticipated release within the genre until Nosferatu. Been seeing a lot of great stuff, but year seems to be simmering out.
It may not turn out to be outright horror as much as thriller, but The Substance is my most anticipated movie in years, no joke. It just looks phenomenal
based on what i've seen from people's reviews and comments from seeing it at festivals The Substance is most definitely a horror, it sounds super gross and gory - i mean, the imdb parents' guide says "high impact blood and gore, injury detail and mutilation" and describes the last 20 minutes as "nauseating"
I need you to see Strange Darling. I want to hear your opinion on it. That movie was absolutely phenomenal. My favorite horror film that came out this year. They need to give Willa Fitzgerald her Oscar nom now.
Back in the mid 1970s author Dean Koontz was an early pioneer of tech horror, he wrote the novel Demon Seed about an AI house which became a Sci Fi movie.
Having watched the original speak no evil and judging by the remake's trailer, the ambiance looks really different and I think I'd be disappointed watching it as the original one looks way more disturbing
Blue Ruin is such an awesome movie! In the beginning, he purchases a post card and when he’s writing on it in the car, he mails it to “Orange, Virginia”, which is a tiny town of like 8,000 people where I’m originally from, born and raised!
We've had so much good horror in August and I'm not expecting much from AfrAId but I'll still happily go see it. It couldn't be worse than Imaginary or Nightswim.
Hold Your Breath sounds like a cross between Lillian Gish's The Wind (wind and dust storms driving her crazy at an isolated ranch), and Michael Shannon's Take Shelter because of the 'protect the family' element. Would be worth a watch if it is as good as either of those films.
i saw the trailer for The Substance a couple times in the cinema recently and i am sooo excited. body horror is by far my favourite subgenre, and i thoroughly trust cannes awarded horror now (thanks titane!)
I am from Utah and was raised Mormon but I no longer practice that religion, and haven't for many years. So with my Utah perspective, and the Mormon perspective I hope we are pleasantly surprised by how different it will be from a Catholic perspective like most of the other religious horror. I am excited for this one!
I’m actually reading Nightbitch right now! I’m enjoying it but definitely can see why some people wouldn’t like it. I’m halfway through and the themes about motherhood so far have been about postpartum depression, the irony/dissonance of what motherhood is “supposed” to look like (domestic, sweet, put together) vs what it actually feels like (a very primal, almost animalistic experience). It also depicts the unappreciated workload of being a mom, balancing motherhood with a career, and how ideas about motherhood in society can take over your entire identity.
The Front Room - I'm expecting iconic lines/scenes similar to another fave of mine "Drag me to hell" Speak no evil - can't wait to see it The Substance - this one, Longlegs and Heretic will probably be my trio of the year. Nosferatu - watching for sure! Hopefully it's good 🤞 Azrael - I'm intrigued so it's in my ptw Apartment 7A - will be a disappointment, calling it now 😂
Thanks for another video! Added lots to my calendar that I didn't have. I am super excited for The Substance, Heretic, and I'll be honest - VHS Beyond. Found footage is my favorite subgenre of horror and I always enjoy the VHS films..plus Justin Long directing?! YES. Also, I had not heard about Your Monster, and I loved Lisa Frankenstein so I'm pretty excited for this one too!
I'm seeing the world premieres for Heretic and Nightbitch at TIFF in 2 weeks! I'm so pumped. I also got tickets for The Substance on the 5th and I've heard nothing but great things about it.
Can't wait to see what they did with Speak no Evil. Didn't enjoy the original one that much except for that one shocking scene, I hope I'll love this one.
definitely always look forward to your videos and reviews! I can’t pick with movie because i’m really excited about a number of them for sure! thank you for sharing ❤
Omg Smart House was so before its time. I remember that movie scaring me lol. Idk how they were like "ai kidnap's a family" was a good childrens movie. Like i know it ends happily but still.
Dream House was released a year before Smart House by Disney. It literally was about a killer AI house. That's what I would compare Afraid to. Timothy Busfield was peak during this time. Most of his films were feel good family films, but then he appeared in this movie and Strays. Maybe one or two others. Regardless, I watched both and Smart House was funny, Dream House was horror.
@@yuke1256 Depends on your tolerance for 80s and 90s movies I'd say. It has not aged well since tech has evolved at a very different pace. Far different than a lot of alien or campier creature features. Lawnmower Man and Arcade aged far better as a VR simulations. That's why most recall Smart House instead. The 90s were wild because there were so many horror films that went straight to video and you would have to go to Blockbuster or your local video rental store and browse a catalogue of movies - many of which may not even be in circulation or have public copies left today. You never knew what you were getting yourself into. There's seemingly so many lost 80s and 90s horror movies with great concepts, just cheap B movie production by studios that went out of business long ago.
The book is so good! And Nightbitch is actually a funny character at the same time, and has some wild references like her hubby having an 'internet stuff' folder, the text talking about how she got charmed by watching Calefarts with him, a lot of spirals into themes of empowerment, toxic positivity and ofc, the MLM kind of moms
@@PossessedbyHorror OMG you named her after Judy Greer's character?! I loved this movie so much as a teenage boy. Mostly because I was 13 and a complete pervert. But, for some reason it was also just so well done in terms of story and cinematography. I am such a dark comedy fan though it makes a lot of sense.
The Substance looks awesome!! The trailer has some dark sounds and Demi Moore looks fantastic! Here in the UK, we have to wait until Jan 1st for Nosferatu (gutted). Other's i'm hyped for are Smile 2, Terrifier 3, Never Let Go, Heretic and bagman!
I cannot wait for “Speak No Evil” to come out. Not because I want to watch it but because if I see one more trailer for it, I might cry. 😭 I’m not into it at all. Usually I’m willing to give most horror movies a chance but this one… no. I have no desire to see it. I am very excited for “The Substance” and “Never Let Go”
Salem Lot reboot is the new Crow,my cousin saw a early preview in Seattle 2 months ago and people walked out, he said only the 20 mn drive in slaughter scene is the only good part,he said it was awful.
Have you seen Murder Party? It's by the same guy as blue ruin and green room but it's definitely not the same vibe, it's a horror comedy, I think it's incredible
Afraid has the exact same concept as the American horror stories episode Daphne. I enjoyed the episode, but it's already been done so I just don't know if I need to see another version of it again...
Wow since you changed your mind about Terrifier 3 hopefully one day you watch When Evil Lurks as well. And I didn't know Nightbitch was a horror movie? If it does end up being horror that makes me even more excited. My most anticipated are: Nosferatu, The Substance, Heretic, and Nightbitch.
It's so weird there's going to be a prequel to the platform, the first was fine but we already know how this movie will end. And that's a problem with a lot of Prequels
Speaking of horror updates, Universal Studios Orlando started promoting Leigh Whannell's upcoming Wolf Man movie. How I found out about this, a fellow TH-camr reposted a posted a picture someone posted on X.

Horror tends to follow the fears of our society. It’s not surprising to me there’s a lot of movies with pregnancy and religion as of late.
@@tiredapplestar well said.
And AI, climate change, disruption of privacy and home invasions
The substance won best screenplay at Cannes so I’m hella hyped, when does horror ever get awards?
Heck yeah! I’m so excited for it
honestly, i’m even more excited to see it! margaret qualley has been killing it lately!
I AM SO excited for The Substance, as well as The Front Room! Can’t wait 😎🍿💯👏🏼
I’m down to see it. Caroline Fargeat did one of my favorite movies Revenge.

Woah! I had no idea Nightbitch was a horror movie. This skyrocketed to my second most anticipated horror movie of the year.
Horror/comedy so I hope it’s heavy on the horror!
With the Cronenberg feel, The Substance trailer has shades of Antidote: Immortality comes with pain and the Re-Animator.
