So this new monster (Super Saiyan 3) firmware is here for the Lumix S5II and S5IIx. To me, the Frame.io feature is HUGE! I can finally backup all the photos and video proxy to cloud directly from the camera anywhere! But what about you guys? what new changes do you like the most
Richard, did I hear you saying pre-burst for RAW and JPEG?.
The SH 30fps burst mode is JPEG only.
Sorry if I'm hearing things.
Great video as usual.and what an upgrade! 😎😎😎
@@nocturnal1970 Thank you! I think SH30 is JPG and RAW? and Pre-burst is also RAW / JPG :) I just shot some photos to double check it
This is very cool, but I've just bought an atomos Connect... Doh!!
Thanks for a good video! I was always wondering why I got pretty much straight lines in silent shooting. Didnt know they had rolling shutter correction in photos. Do you know if it is in raw and jpg?
@@AJEnggrav I believe it's in RAW and JPG
I respect your willingness to run like a madman through a crowd with two cameras strapped together for science.
Many people did look at me like I'm a madman. oh maybe i"m a madman.
@@TheRealRichardWong😆😂😜
Panasonic has a history of developing cameras over the long term. This is a major upgrade.
Panasonic has to be the best of the camera companies for firmware updated and free. Every brand has pros and cons to a specific user. Panasonic actually listens to the customer. Yeah, that why I continue using their products.
Can't complain at all. Half of this firmware they don't even need to do and could have save that for their next camera, but they still did it.
@@TheRealRichardWongIt actually makes sense to boost their reputation especially after the years of TH-camrs denouncing Lumix because of the PDAF omission. They need to advertise how good their cameras are, especially where they are industry leading with stability.
Wow!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Well done Lumix!!!
thanks for watching!
Excellent thumbnail!
haha thank you! Yes I love this thumbnail too :)
@@TheRealRichardWong over 9000 forsure
Thanks, Richard--another excellent video, well presented and delivered. You are a pro. I am so glad I got into the Lumix gear this year.
Thank you very much Joe!
I switched lately from Pentax... The king of video 😛 but I bought it as a photographer. Tried a few videos today climbing down steep mountains, only so much the stability could do there 😮
This firmware update is very exciting. It is Kaizen. This and future firmware updates will make the Lumix S5ii/iix really a great investment. Futureproof. Now only a RF style body is missing 😊
Hey Maybe the next firmware update will turn your S5II into a rangefinder style body! 😝
@@TheRealRichardWong I even would pay for that kind of woodoo firmware update :)
Shut up 🤫 they might start. 😜
I have the Lumix S1 and I'm waiting for it's successor!! This kind of features make fall in love with Lumix again and again. BTW Lumix released a new Firmware V2.3 in January for the Lumix S1 and for some reason they only stated "Improved compatibility with newer Macro lenses" BUT, with the new Firmware AF is working soooooo much better than before. Please give it a try, nobody is talking about it in TH-cam.
I don't see 2.3 version on Panasonic Site. Where you found it?
Same here. Love the S1, can’t wait for the successor!
@@ryszardzokowski812 when you go to the Firware update page you’ll see V2.2 but if you click on “Download Firmware” it will take you to another page and you’ll see V2.3, I discovered the new firmware by accident and it is sooo good, let me know if you find it!!
@@janwedek check the new firmware!! It will bring a better AF experience to your camera, I really don’t know why it was so underrated by LUMIX itself!
Last S1 firmware was 2.2 dated 25/7/2022, the 2.3 was for the S5. You telling porkies man? 😮
Awesome work, Richard! 😎
Thank you Shane!
The addition of new functions is the demand for a new service, everything is as planned and a gift for lumix connoisseurs in the sense of the latest technology and accessibility to them
Best review of update in TH-cam! Thanks!
Thank you very much 😊
Great video of the new features, thanks!
Oh thank you for watching Gordon!!! ❤️
Thanks you for this video. I appreciate being able to see the results of the new IBIS AND comparison to the standard. Good job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bravo, Richard! Wonderfully in depth!
oh thank you so much Hugh!! :)
@@TheRealRichardWongI enjoy watching your work!
I am glad for Lumix users for these updates, that continously add value. And it shows how good customer management works in practice. Unfortunately I made a mistake when I switched to Sony. Since then then my flagship a1 has received no relevant updates. Nada, Zilch. Until Sony finally came up with a firmware update two weeks ago - and they massively, totally screwed it. 🤦 I think I will come back to Pana 😅
I just returned to Panasonic a month ago, after being pretty well invested in the Sony system. Sold everything and now have two S5ii bodies and 4 native lenses. Man, I love this system! Cameras are so intuitive, great ergonomics, that Leica 3-d pop from the lenses, and fantastic build quality. Sony makes terrific Cameras, but I really missed the Lunix system. The new pdaf brought me back (and it works fantastic), but it's the system I missed. Based on my experiences, you'll not regret the effort .
Thanks Richard, great insight as always.
thanks for watching :)
Thank you Lumix, great news!
Indeed! There would be many happy S5II and IIx users today!
great stabilization demonstration.
I will upload a longer stabilsiation demo video very soon for those who are interested
@@TheRealRichardWong What you uploaded is pretty amazing!
Yeah that loojs outstanding beyond outstanding. Does it work in 4k 60 ? If so does it crop even more than the previous 1.5x?
I like the crop at 300mm
It will be so cool to my workflow. Thank you for the information! 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
you are welcome!
thx for the video. well explained mister richard wong. best regards from switzerland.
Thank you very much Sam!
Another great video Richard. As a stills photographer I am mainly interested in the photo upgrades but happy for videographers that the video updates have been added. I'm thinking the S1Rii will have this and more which is very exciting. It must be very close to release. Thanks again. Phillip
thanks for watching! The S1RII is really just a rumour, i wouldn't hold my breath for it.
@@TheRealRichardWong You don't think one of the Lumix cameras registered in China in September last year will be an S1 successor? Rumours are that its release has been delayed by agreement with Leica until mid this year so that the SL3 gets some free air. I can hold my breath until then I reckon 😀
Yayyy pre burst mode
Alright, this is the best thumbnail ive seen in a while. 👏
haha thanks for that. I do really like this thumbnail too (i feel my thumbnails are usually quite boring)
That hair on the S5ii looks like the Smallrig furry wind screen I ordered 😂 and clearly needed today up the mountains.
Thanks for the good news!

Lumix is just the best!!!💥💥💥💥💥
Wow this is incredible. I realllllly hope these features trickle down to the GH6, but it's probably going to be in the GH6 successor
we will have to wait ad see! :)
Love your vids...great quality. If I missed it, I apologize, but I didn't hear a release date in your vid and didn't see it in your description. Appears this update will be released on or about on 4/22/2024. Will be a good one and appreciate your early review and knowledge.
Yes that's correct
Now Panasonic "S" is really ready for wildlife!
can you really do bif with it? I've heard the rolling shutter is bad.
@@Healthy_TokiIt's better rolling shutter than Sony Aiv and apparently it has rolling shutter correction also which I didn't know about.
BIF is more about skill though
I am very happy to have animal detection. I hope they add planes, trains in future. Also, I really want them to bring back the multiple exposure mode.
one day!!
Спасибо!
Thank you for watching
it's time to upgrade my S5 to S5IIX
Awesome update from Panasonic! I hope they would also let the S52 lock on a face when Video AFC is on like the G9II.
Geeky nerdy techy's fw update video goes over that point and it seems to be much improved.
Right well the official livestream was a bit of a disaster 😅 On the firmware - the pre-burst mode with rolling shutter distortion correction is very interesting. I'm curious to see what effect it has on sharpness, assuming it's warping it digitally. Feels like a proper pre-burst mode is a feature for a future, faster, photo camera, but it's nice to at least get a glimpse of what could be coming in the future. Looking forward to trying the new AF too.
the warping correction is applied digitally in-camera in real time.
This moving shutter correction is new in firmware 3.0 or was it already there?
@@nocturnal1970 it was there from fw 1.0 :)
Hoping for a firmware refresh of some functionality to the S5 OG, yeah I know that firmware cannot bring AF, but some of the other features would be amazing!
unfortunately i think a lot of these features require a lot of processor power/hardware that the original S5 does not have
Thanks for your video. Sorry if my question is dumb but do we still need to purchase the paid firmware upgrade in order to shoot raw on the sII? Because I couldn't find where I can purchase it from, and wondered how much it would be!
You still need to purchase the upgrade key if you want to have raw recording over HDMI. I suggest check with the retailer that sell you the s5ii as any official retailer should be able to sell you the upgrade key as well
Thank you for going in depth on some of the limitations of the Proxy recording, that is great information to have. One thing of note is it would be great if you went more in depth with how it improves person detection and how sticky it is. AF is a pain during events because the selection tends to jump all over the place. Very important to know how significantly this is improved and it's a shame all the reviewers are seemingly glossing over this.
thanks for the feedback, i did some test it seems a bit better. However for me to really tell how much better it is, I will need to shoot side by side using old and new firmware at the same time extensively and capture both screens so I can analyse that.. and that's not easy to do for a one man team (me) and really takes time.
S5 owners finding it harder to say not much difference, that's why I advised people lately to buy the newer cameras.
You can get a used S5 for $800.
@@LumixGangI know... And what?
If the budget is only $800 then does full-frame even make sense?
Nice update. Hope they also do something about better slo-mo recording in high resolution modes like 60fps without crop and 120 with crop. Even if that is time limited like couple minutes, that would be fine.
Also wanted to know if the E-stabilization not create ghosting effect under low light, especially when the lights are turned on? I usually keep it off due to the fear of ghosting.
The 60fps crop and 120fps are hardware limitation, it requires new hardware, much faster sensor to not have cropping
@@TheRealRichardWong What my understanding is that the limitation is on the memory read-write module and buffering, not on the sensor. So I agree that unlimited recording may not be possible due to excessive heating issue. But I feel that short recordings can be implemented. For example there must be possibility of allowing 2-3 minutes of 120 fps recordings or full frame 60 fps recording. We are absolutely fine with such short burst slo-mo video clips.
@@OasisExplorerIt is the sensor read out being too slow.
These are very cool 👏 Can you confirm if the proxy works when recording to an SSD? Will it be recorded to an SD Card or in the SSD itself?
I don't have a S5IIx so i can't check for you sorry
What about Info Display simultaneously run on external monitor and in camera monitor? Did they fixed it? After 1.5 update I cant use info on both monitors... And yes, it worked before v1.5 I have recording of that.
hope G9 MK2 will has it
A lot of changes came from G9 Mk2, but yes would be good to see proxy recording or frame.io to arrive on G9 Mk2
thanks for sharing. Do you know about the improvement of the microphone in the camera? It's worse than the s5 and sony. Do you think that Panasonic will improve the focus in 1080 60p in ff mode? Thanks Richard ❤
No I'm not aware of that sorry
Sony should learn what a proper firmware update looks like. :)
Anyone have any idea why Lumix dumped multi-exposure? I loved it on the S5 and used with strobes for real estate photography. Saved me a ton of time by avoiding having to use multiple flashes and light stands.
Not too sure. I suspect when they move to the new processor, they need to redevelop most of the features. And they just prioritise the one with highest usage amount current users. So a few old features are now missing on the new cameras
since you know the camera so well maybe you are able to answer this question: How can I set the camera that it DOES NOT LOCK THE EXPOSURE AUTOMATICALLY ( AEL LOCK ) when half pressing the shutter button ????
I know the stabilization upgrade is focused on wide-angle lenses. Any observations about unit with normal or short telephoto?
I haven't got two telephoto photo lens to do a side by side test. But while perspective distortion correction is not needed, the E-Stab high should still help improve when shooting with longer lenses
I'll try it when the firmware comes out, it already works great on max zooms on 24-105 f4 and 70-300 f4.5-f5.6 although you're unlikely to be walking or running with 105mm and 300mm.
Amazing updates. Now maybe they can fix the HDMI lag.
I would love to see improvements in HDMI lag as well!
nice! with a crop factor of about 1.58x my sigma 20mm will give me about a 31mm focal range which is still considered wide while using the High e-stabilization
I just did some proper measurement, it's about 1.43x crop for E-Stab high
@@TheRealRichardWong nice even better! that means my 20 mm will still be quite wide at 28mm with E-stabilization set to High. Thank you for letting me know!
@@souljahserjueMtl My 24-105 was not wide enough today at 4k 50 with a 36mm eq crop but I do have a Samyang 14mm f2.8, MF and adapted Pentax K mount though. A 14mm is far better for eq 21mm to be honest if hiking like I was today
@@nocturnal1970 true not at 50 or 60fps but at least with E stabilization set to high you can still capture good slow-motion in 30fps because of the lack of jitter.
Maybe I’m missing something, but if only the “High” setting is new for the E-stabilization, wouldn't it be more fitting to compare it with the "Standard" E-stabilization in the running test, instead of the IBIS only setting?
Of what use is the preburst mode if its only using electronic stutter? Will the pictures taken after the preburst also need to be with electronic shutter, or its only the preburst?
Pre-burst mode is always electronic shutter, it's the same for Nikon, Olympus (OM System)..etc.
If it's for mechanical shutter, then when you half-click the shutter to start pre-burst, the camera's mechanical shutter would be firing at maximum burst speed continuously as you are waiting for some special moment to happen. It will kill the mechanical shutter really quickly.
@TheRealRichardWong I didn't know, never used it before. Thanks! I wonder how usable it is given the slow readout of some of these cameras.
@@TheRealRichardWong Great explanation and obvious when you said it LoL 😊 Most people will miss that one 😮
wow
Any chance we can turn on the proxy option on while having the original files recorded on both cards at the same time? I never record my footage on one card, specially after a V90 sandisk card failed me on two occasions and I was lucky to have the footage being recorded on the second card. So I'd rather convert to proxy in post production and keep the 2 card slots in my Lumix recording at the same time.
i don't think so, you would not be able to record two video files to a single card slot at the same time. There would be some big technical challenges if you want to do that.
Maybe the next Lumix camera would have 3 card slots?
@@TheRealRichardWong I had a Sony A7III few years ago that did record original 4K files to both SD cards and proxy as well so if Sony managed to overcome this big technical challenge then I guess Panasonic can as well.
Oh yes true. However one difference is, the A7III's maximum bitrate is only 100Mbps, while S5II/IIx maximum bit rate is a lot higher. But yes if Sony can do it with the A7III, there is a chance we can see something similar in a Lumix camera in the future. I would love to see that for sure!
S1H 후속은 언제 나올까요?😂
How much better is the autofocus especially on humans in this new update?
I'm wondering if they changed AF settings so that we get PDAF in all framerates
180fps slo-mo? I doubt it but it's a joke getting no AF whatsoever at higher fps
I'm not aware of any changes to that. It's most likely hardware limitations that can'be be resolved by firmware update
would be nice to see a comparison between proxy 4k vs regular 4k mov file for social media
the proxy is not 4K, only full HD or HD

There is one really essential item missing....the S5II cannot detect the eye of people wearing glasses. This is absolutley disturbing. I hope this will work some day with another firmware update.
I hope they can fix the HDMI lag a bit...
I wish they would do these free firmware upgrades for the the S1, S1R and the S1H. The people who supported Panasonic and bought into these systems are there reasons that there is even a S5, S5ii or a S5iix in the first place. Panasonic needs to make their premiere line of cameras whole and give better and more frequent firmware upgrades and workable wifi/Bluetooth transfer methods to these products which never received workable transfer software.
Your S1 has much better internal video quality than both the S5 and S5IIX.
...did the annoying slow startup time improve as well?
Not aware of any changes
@@TheRealRichardWong Thank you, Richard!😊
I don't find it slow😢
I cant find E stabilization High on my update on the S5iiX
Can you find the E stabilisation in the menu? And what's the firmware version on your s5iix?
What date will be available, i look on the site and its still the 2.4 ?
22 April
Has anyone had an issue where after updating you cannot select the human detection mode, or face/eye detection? Post-update I can select any mode but when selecting human the options for 'target parts' are non-existent and the selection screen is just blank. I can see the options in the background if I do click in that blank screen but only behind 'This menu item can't be set' pop up.
I'm planning to reach out to Lumix but it's really a bummer in the meantime. Hoping I just have some obscure option set that isn't allowing and that it's just user error but idk, very strange.
That sounds weird. Can you share a screenshot of the issue and I can have a look?
I hope they bring the proxy video upload to G9ii but I'm afraid they won't as it's marketed more as a wildlife stills camera than as a video monster it also is.
I feel this won't go to G9II, maybe GH6?
@@TheRealRichardWong yeah could be, I don't have one but I wish they'd show some firmware love to gh6 anyways.
The official event is currently not fluid. So I prefer to watch your video first here 😂
Thanks @dirks.3797 ! You are definitely first!
LoL yes they mucked that up big time, it was boring anyway with a lot of corporate crap talk on it. Richard is better
Does any of this trickle down to the S5 as well?
My thoughts exactly 👍
No
Quite unlikely as most of the upgrades are computational expensive processes like E-Stab high, proxy recording, improved AI detection.
What about Boost I.S. with E-Stab HIGH?
You don't use boost I.S. when moving. So no point in combining the 2.
It won’t let me open the bin file
Unable to expand "S5m2_V30 2.bin". It is in an unsupported format.
You don't need to extract the .bin file. Just copy it to your memory card and update firmware from the camera
I hope this is improved autofocus especially with birds and animal eye tracking as my camera keeps thinking the tree is an animal when it's not
AI is just hype, it's not too intelligent but hopefully an improved algorithm works better, but it's not AI, what is?
It is improved. Test it when the new firmware is available on the 22th April and see if it makes any difference :)

There seems to be a huge oversight in Panasonic software compared to Sony.
