Lyrics
We were like brothers
Everybody said we looked the same
You a little taller, and broader, and bolder
We were afraid of your mother
Hell, she used to hit you so hard
And your dad took off when you were a baby
And you still hate me for my dad stuck around
You pin me to the ground
Eight years old with a replica gun pushin' in my skull
Saying you're gonna kill me if I tell
Never did, and I never will
That house was living hell
Come on
I remember my mother when she found a new man
And your mother thought she found a partner
A father for you, no wonder you can't stand me
I can't stand me, too
I can't stand me, too
Oh, your gone mother repaired the anger in me
Spoke to me like I was an adult
Didn't take sides and didn't turn me against my dad
Then she took those pills and now she's gone
See her in the night
In the corner of my eye
And I see her in the night
Heard you glassed a boy back in the borders
Some naughty family boys are after you
You pinned me to the wall and said my mother
Stole your inheritance from you, oh yeah?
We ain't got a penny between wor
Holding up this tin that we live in
You pinned me to the wall and smashed a bottle
Your eyes the door to hell and all within
Ha

can we take a minute to appreciate THE CINEMATOGRAPHY
Like a movie
I always does 😉
@Adrian Heron I disagree I think the song is sooooo good the video was is great but the song can be related too as well by many
Honestly.. my god
@Adrian Heron not at all, both mix perfectly
Nothing like I’ve seen before this guy is a great story teller
He sounds exactly like The Killers.
@@ericzum This song likes Brandon Flowers (Killers lead singer) with The War on Drugs playing the music. I love all. This is one of the best new rock songs I've heard in many years. This kid has heart, and talent.
@ericzum His voice sounds a lot like Brandon Flowers that's true. But in my opinion the songs are even better. He is a wonderful storyteller indeed.
This guy will be considered a legend in the future, the most promising artist this country has seen for a very long time, I hope this guy continues to write great songs and keep amazing us
Definitely. This is timeless, unlike most of the crap which comes out today.
@@21hazza definitely agree with you, I'm becoming a massive Sam Fender fan at the moment, I hope he stays this good, he seems like the kind of guy that will write great songs no matter what is going on around him, the Bob Dylan of our time in that respect
@Ossarian strongly disagree
@Ossarian again your opinion, this happens to be mine, respect it or leave the comment section
@Ossarian read the comment again, I said in terms of how he write his songs, he is a modern day Bob Dylan, I didnt say he was Bob Dylan
unreal.
ya ma's ya da
my two fav ppl ever sam fender and cam!!!
Cam Kirkham hi cam
Holy shit Cam, actually I'm not that surprised to be honest 😂

Sam Fender is absolutely killing it right now. He’s without a doubt the best uk artist on the scene.
Nathan Torode one of
Finn Lxke *he is*
I'd say it is hard to argue that anyone other than The 1975 is the best on the UK scene right now. But Fender is gonna be huge for sure
William Öhman bit random isn’t it. I mean they’re a perfectly decent band. What makes them indisputably the best band in England?
At least Sam fender can claim to be the highest selling English artist this year.
@@williamohman5469 the 1975 are a band, not an artist
there’s literally no other way to describe this. it’s stunning
There's literally a million ways and more to describe ... Everything. Great song.
Louis Tomlinson introduced me to Sam Fender and honestly? I'm thankful.
akanshya yes 👌🏻😍😍

Still crying, can't stop and won't stop
I’m not crying, u are
Very close, "leave fast" is the one.
@@joshthomas5919 reminds me when I left my first home to California .
As a 53 year old, this evokes strong childhood memories. My best friend had a tough upbringing. He was from a rough family of drinkers & literally had nothing. Life was tough for him. He got in lots of trouble. People were always after him. We lost touch as we got older. I often wonder what became of him.
Thanks Sam. Great writing, great songs & great subjects you write about
Cletus (If I can call thou that) - I agree, whilst not from the north east I'm from an old pit village in northern Derbyshire, which are all closed now obviously, but I too witnessed similar depredation for not only myself but my peers and its so sad to see how "School friends" end up - flipping that though it does also give hope which is what I take from this song.
This comment has made me cry . Lots of love I hope you find him xxx
He is just the best of all time
Devin Devin I mean steady on
@@jackbrown4697 You clearly havn't heard of Martine Mccutcheon then.
@@jackbrown4697 Let's get this straight- Martine is the G.O.A.T.
@@jackbrown4697 Love love love how you took this at face value 😄
This guy deserves the hype he’s getting , the most sincere and artistic artist there’s been in England for a long time
Rosie Risdale in the world I agree favourite artist now
Best since right said fred.
How's Peter

Springsteen + The Smiths + The Killers = Sam Fender. Great music kid.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm detecting a bit of Sting and The Strokes as well
Oh and Tears for Fears
You should have more likes for this comment 👍
Oh and War On Drugs.
Best mix
I don’t think Sam even knows how he will go down in history.
I really hope he will be as big as Springsteen for example. He'd deserve it.
Mate u deserve a grammy.
The guy is incredible, I dont think people realise how good he actually is there hasn't been anyone this good in decades
oasis
@@ldbbarker3935 so decades then ?
@@kylehowells5172 decades is plural it could mean 20 years, 50 years so you could go all the way back to the Beatles.
@@ldbbarker3935 right so what I said was right then ?
@@kylehowells5172 Sam Fender is very very good but if you had said the last ten years I would possible agreed but because you said decade's then it could include bands from the 60's, 70's all the way up to the present day and if you think he is better than the Beatles or Oasis then I am sorry to tell you but your wrong.
There is no single artist in the last decade to have this much impact on me as this guy, for the short time that I've been listening to his works. A true artist and storyteller. Sam is a rare gem in this chaotic world. I hope you never lose your luster.
litterlay same🙏🏽
I discovered Sam Fender via a cover version from The Borders of Jack Savoretti (only Vocals and Piano). This original version is so catchy and touching. Never felt like this listening to a song for a long long time. Listen to his new single WILD GREY OCEAN. Another masterpiece. So emotional.
Springsteen, Killers, The War on Drugs with a Geordie twist. Love it!!
To a Tee. Couldn’t have said it any better
This guy make this 50 year old geezer remember what its like to feel like a 20 year old dude. Nice!
Same here. I'm 46 and his stuff is just as raw, urgent and powerful to me now as it would have been to 17 year old me.
Absolutely encapsulated the north east in an album! What an artist
may all being across all time know peace intimately.
"We were like brothers
Everybody said we looked the same.." I miss you, bro.
Lyrics about growing up, love, despair, family life, all written from experience and the heart.
Heart wrenching
This guy's lyrics are pure genius. One of the best British artists of this generation.
this video made me tear up :’) i love the match cuts in this, they tell the story better and makes it easier to understand who’s who and the similarities of what we see in the present tense. god that ending tho 🤧🤧
Sam and the lads saved me!! After my brother took his own life because his partner took her own life 8 weeks before I found myself almost doing the same. I felt like the only person in the world to suffer this!! To know that like minded people feel just the same and the bridge the lads created for us all to come together is mind blowing. X
Working class hero of the modern times. Finally a kid has the gumption to go against the grain in the world of modern so-called music and smash it around the face with his incredible lyrics & raw talent.
Strong Springsteen vibes and I love it. Truly amazing song, makes me want to go out for an evening drive on good roads 😂
I’m so late to the party but this and so many other Sam Fender songs I’m hearing for the first time are absolutely stunning. What a sublime songwriter, the finest British songwriter of his generation
I cry everytime I watch this video when having a beer, My best mate is no longer with me... I wish he was. This video is our youth to a T.. I'm 38 now, spent my youth in Dundee, Fife and Edinburgh. This video breaks me everytime...
I wish I could go back then with what I know now.
Jason brother I'll see you in the next life ❤
Honestly, kudos to Sam and his team for quality songs and videos. It’s hard to find these kinda truthful art nowadays.
So sad and so beautiful at the same time..
The best music videos inevitably are ❤️
No one writing more honest songs than this guy rn
I am 65 years of age and I LOVE ALL OF SAM'S MAGICAL MUSIC.... i discovered him and now my son rarely plays anything else!! He has given me hope that really talented songwriter/singers DO still exist. Absolutely fabulous!!
This mans music has been mine and my daughters salvation to our life! X
This guy should be everywhere why I'm not seeing him trying to hide him from us makes me more intrigued
This is phenomenal. I don’t understand how I just heard of him now.
Keep going through the tunes mate. Lads quality
For those who are a bit lost about this story... Sam is talking about his childhood in Kelso. More specifically about a friend he used to have called Joshua Watson and his family: the mother (Andrea) and the Godmother. It was a toxic friendship, Joshua was always looking for troubles and he got his. The Godmother was mentally ill, she was housed in by Joshua's family due to it and became a close friend of Sam's mother. Shortly after that, she killed herself. Later Joshua's family moved out to The Scottish Borders where they currently live in. Btw, Joshua and Sam were playing cowboys when the gun episode happened.
You're welcome
Andrew Land are you sure that’s true? I read that The Borders refers to a pub in his hometown hence “I heard you glassed a boy back in the borders”
How do you know though?
@@C0ZMICWIZARD That part refers to an episode that happened when Joshua was drunk. It appears in the news, he ended up paying for damages

His voice has such a melancholy aspect to it that just hit's me in the chest.
The cinematography, the lyrics, the storyline - it genuinely makes me bawl my eyes out.
First time i came over this song, i was sure it was new The Killers' stuff. Something as familiar and cozy to listen
The guitar solo from 4:30 onwards is simply spine tingling, hair raising and fantastic
I watch and listen to this at least once a week. This takes me back to when I was a kid. His lyrics, videos, songs have this amazing quality to transcend nostalgia and present day
The lost art of story telling lives on through Sam Fender
2 million views? Such an underrated artist.
he's gonna be BIG!!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I cannot stop listening to all sam fenders songs they resonate so much and give me comfort thank you 🙏
His music rips through my soul and I genuinely can't get enough.

There was so much tension I was actually expecting a kiss near the end between the younger actors. But I think Sam is straight so I wasn't too surprised when they didn't. Anyway this is an amazing song and video. The two different timelines slightly confused me especially as it kept cutting back and forth but I admire Sam for going down the more abstract route. And yes one day he will be remembered as a legend.
I almost expected it too, based on that Tove Styrke video which felt similar. It wouldn't have fitted with the song which is more about violence and broken friendship.
Check out Vance Joy - From Afar. I think that's the kind of story you're seeing. Great song too!
@@theezys1509 thank you for recommending such a great video.
Also check out Alfie Arcuri - If they only knew

I just heard this song... and my mind its blown!! Can we please talk about the sax and the solo at the end?? Its mind blowing
High energy !
I'm not usually reduced to tears by a song a video but cried really hard after this one especially when you read the lyrics. both the song and the video are works of art.
This is art in it's purest form! Sam Fender is an artist not just a singer.
sammy boy has gone and done it again
Sam Fender only releases the most visually beautiful music videos. I love this so much.
Listening to this again a year on, wow the emotion, the beauty in Sam's story telling is amazing. Real musicians take you on a journey and leave you wanting more . He has this down pat.
This is a true modern classic, it gives me 80's Springsteen vibes 🎸🎷

Great story telling, video seems to take influences from the ‘This is England series’. This is a superb track, can’t wait to hear it live again!
I would say the video is influenced by Sémaphore of Requin Chagrin.
You could be right. Stephen Graham features in one of his music vids. Sam is a fan of him.
Love u Sam 💘
Absolute favourite of Sam's videos - stunning songwriting and the transitions between older and younger have been done superbly, just superb.
Sam reminds me of my dad (rip) driving in his F reg red escort to cricket matches around the northeast on a Saturday morning in the 80s. Love it
What a gorgeouussssss music video
I am glad the best song of the year has a music video. The way he sings "that house was living hell "and The saxaphone at the end get me every time.
Didn't expect to be hit by that truck of emotions. Amazing.
I seriously can't believe am just discovering this beast what a f***ing talent bravo Sam 👏🙌
Ditto…I’m still in shock. Reeling from Seventeen Going Under…only to find out he’s been around a minute…what a talent. 😳
I LOVE blasting this song and screaming along to the last verse while driving. Heart breaking song and so powerful!!
Sam Fender is Jeff buckley on antidepressants. Awesome artist.!
Favourite song 💙
Growing up in a small town in England this song resonates
can’t put into words how amazing this is. literal art
Storytelling at its finest 👌 2yrs listening to this,it only gets better ❤❤
Big love from Poland!
Hope to see him next year. I’m obsessed.
Best tune on the album 🎸
I could have done with Sam Fender 10 years ago. His lyrics resonate deep within me as I'm sure it does with many up and down the country.
Bruce Springsteen his songs great about working class usa life
Looks like a love triangle which ruins the lives for all the three of them. Rarely have I seen something that poetic as a music video, it's so beautiful
I listen to this song every day. It has given me superpowers
This guy's earnest and theatrical in all the best ways. Holy shit.
Who are the actors in this, so good
Mia Yeardley Ryan Nolan’s the angry young one, what a fittie
Frankie Wilson is the older one with curly hair
not sure about the others xxx
Brian Glen-Smith is the angry older one. Top actor this guy, watch out for him!
Mia Yeardley Alex hodson is the younger one who has really short hair
Milly Croft is the younger girl
Ryan Nolan, younger one, appears in the film 1917 as well :)
Rare for an artist these days to make you feel something. Modern music to me has no soul and the lyrics mean nothing so well done Sam 👏
The moment I discovered his music, I've been scouring youtube because I had to hear more. This, and All is on my side have been my favourites ever since. Oh he is a talented lad. So glad that all his and the band's hard work is paying off and I can't wait to see him in Dec! X
Reminds me of my troubled youth & closest friend I ever had who I lost to a horrible disease too young.. I have a life of memories I could of only talked to him about... I miss my best friend.
i hardly ever say this about, well, anything but oh my god, the sheer amount of unfiltered emotion and sincerity in this song, in sam's voice, makes me choke up and stop in my tracks every time
I don’t know how he does it, the stories portrayed are always outstanding
This song and video really hit me hard..
Masterpiece.
Well done Sam Fender👏
This is a lads childhood in the UK. This whole album is amazing but this really pins it down. Nice one Sam.
im from italy but i have to say a big thank you to patrick topping for making me discover such a great arist as sam fender
My absolute favorite song and now it has an absolute stunner of a music video... thank you, just thank you Sam ❤️
It's mindblowing how a song and a music video can hold so much. Like people are saying here in the comments, he's a very fluid story teller. There's just something special about all of this, isn't it? I just hope I'm lucky enough to see this live someday.
Sounds Just Like An 80's Song, Good To Know There's Still Good Music From That Era Still Around
Christ almighty where has the last 11 months gone 😩 I love this and will always treasure sams music , got me through some very very bad points in the last 11 months or so with my mental health x
Just found Sam Fender a few weeks ago and keep listening to every song over and over again.. such a masterpiece! How could someone not love it? 😂❤
I got a feeling Springsteen would love this
Sam Fender music really makes my life better.
This kids' song writing is brilliant. He is so refreshing. I am 100% a fan of Sam Fender.
What a beautiful video. The song and cinematography are absolutely brilliant and tell an incredibly sad story. Nothing short of remarkable. Greatest video ever made.
i wanna comment something but he made me speechless already
What the hell are the youth / adults struggling with and overcoming? What do they think they feel and live in their lives? Did we, your parents, ask you seriously? Don't they care to know what they need and want? If you are reading this, son, it matters to me and I ask you , just know it that I’m live for now. Love you❤️
Listening to these lyrics hits very hard. Growing up this song reflects some of the times me and my best friend had. Hardship, learning and messing about… sadly he passed away in 2009 and I’ve never really recovered from it. He left a legacy and has a wonderful family who I am still in touch with. Thank you Sam fender for delivering these kind of songs that make me think of the good times we had as a youth and will tell my children about this. We lived and loved and were like brothers growing up and we were afraid of each other’s mothers 🤣🤣 god bless x
