Music video by The Verve performing Lucky Man.
I was 32 when this brilliant masterpiece was released. One month after a horrible drug overdose. This song was key instrumental in my recovery, and continues to be to this day. 24 years drug free, and definitely a Lucky Man !
well thats a great comment! cheered me up. good man. god bless you sir
Well done Seeker. ❤️ Lovely light in a cold dark world. Spread the happiness. 👏🙏
Fair play to you brother, it's hard overcoming addiction 👏

Purely one of the best songs of the 90,s

Purely one of the best humans, too. 🙏
A musical prophet with a full heart and a genuine love for people.
Cool fuckin song
Agreed.
Always loved this song but the day I was given the all clear from cancer at Manchester Royal I walked into Cafe Nero and this was playing, extra special.
Damn that is awesome Craig.

Amazing xxx
Super 👏👏👏
That's so awesome!
It's hard to explain to young people what the UK music scene in the 90s was like. Endless young talented bands with great musicians pumping out classics back to back.
Total agree
So much great music and movies
No woke shit and all the other shit in this once great country
Life was so much better
@@AndrewBower-zf7bj But the music was just kind-of background them, as MrPicklerwoof suggests.
NOW we really need things like the above, with the world being even worse than it ever was.
The struggle is now, and (having been Born Again in Jesus), I am actually exhilarated by it.
I see things more clearly, and there is everything to play for still.
Which is why I'm writing to you, my friend...
All these northern UK bands had the same sound. Pavement in the US from the same time period was really something, though.
Back then young people could move out, find cheap place to live, and take chances! I miss those days!

"How many times do I have to learn all the love I have is in my mind?" What a profound lyric, that compels us to dig a little deeper and find love for ourselves and not expect it from others!! I've struggled with this for so long until I realized that the love you have for yourself defines every relationship in your life. All the love you need is within you!
I think that line isn't about love for yourself. (I think) It's about the reality that all thought, feelings, emotions, etc all come from WITHIN. Therefore if you are not feeling love, or happiness you need only reach internally to grab it and there is no reason to look externally for it. It doesn't exist out there.
nowhere near as deep as some Sir Mix a lots lyrics! "My anaconda don't want none
Unless you've got buns, hun", now thats genius level!
That is such a lovely thing to say, all the luck and love to you 🙏

“Happiness, something in my own place. I’m stood here naked smiling I feel no disgrace, with who I am.” - CLASSIC.
Happiness, more or less
It's just a change in me, something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness, coming and going
I watch you look at me, and watch my fever grow
And I know just where I am
But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
But I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands
Happiness, something in my own place
I'm stood here naked, I smile and I feel no disgrace
With who I am
Happiness, coming and going
I watch you look at me, watch my fever grow
And I know just who I am
And how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
I hope you understand
I hope you understand
Oh yeah
You know, you know, you know, you know
You know, you know, you know, you know
Got a love that'll never die, no, no (you know, you know)
Happiness more or less
It's just a change in me, something in my liberty
Happiness, coming and going
I watch you look at me, watch my fever grow
And I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my, my, my, my
We got a love that never dies
I got a love that'll never die
No, no
And I love you, man
Yeah
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty (don't think, don't, don't think I'm lying)
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty (don't think, don't think I'm lying, I'm trying)
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
It's just a change in me, something in my liberty
Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I said oh, my, my, my, my, my
"The first time I ever heard this was in a truck stop bathroom somewhere in central Illinois. I'll never forget that trip and this song totally puts me back there."
Okay, UPDATE:
Since a few people wanted to know about my above comment from four months ago, this road trip was taken in October of 2014 with one of my good friends who was getting over the loss of another friend. For personal reasons, I am not going to give out his name. But, he called me out of the blue the day before and asked if we could just drive somewhere. His best friend from high school had committed suicide a few months before and he was really struggling with life and the loss.
He picked me up on a Friday and we drove all night, ending up somewhere near Mazon, Illinois. We stopped at a Pilot truck station along the way for a break around 2AM and while washing my hands, I heard this over the PA and was mesmerized. Somehow, this song fit the situation perfectly.
Both of us were struggling with the trials of life and yet, it made us realize we were both lucky men - still alive, fighting, even though things were tough. It made me appreciate the fact I had good friends and that I could be there for another person struggling with a loss. It's funny how music can do that.
My friend and I both have a passion for railroads and ended up stargazing, attempting to solve the problems of the world, and watching freight trains roll through the night amongst open corn fields. A year later and every time I hear this, I go right back to that moment and think of where I was going and what life was like at that time.
+Delay In Block Productions ...ty for sharing this story. I hope friend is doing good.
+Delay In Block Productions Cool story Bro' .

Good writing, who says there is no good writing on TH-cam, suck it, Melville and Dickens !!!
That comment put me right there lookin at stars as freight trains roll by
I didn't know for the longest time that he says "And I love you, man" at 3:35... I thought it was "I'm a lucky man." It seems at varying intervals he is talking to a lover ("I watch you look at me, watch my fever grow"), himself (But how many corners do I have to turn?), and then - at the end, in this line - perhaps a friend, too. Special songwriting.
life is difficult but there's so many things we can be thankful for. love to everyone reading this. you have no idea how strong you are, you can overcome the pain plaguing you. we can all be grateful for what we have. love you all❤️❤️

I have been thru some very hard times. Watching my dad OD. on dope. And my struggles with heroin addiction. But this song just reminds how lucky I am to still be alive and everything is gonna be alright.
It's funny because I just returned to this song to reflect on the good times shared with my childhood best friend who died this week from heroin related causes. He was 34. He was exceptionally dialed into the nature of being present, which is why we connect so strongly, but he's gone. Leave your addiction, fully and completely, as not something that you'll ever allow yourself to be ashamed of but rather of something that you feel empowered by to degrees that most will never understand but which will empower you to stay clean while immersed in the juice of life that is only offered through the experience of rejuvenation of those who desire a better conclusion to this game of life.

As much notoriety Bittersweet Symphony received (and deserved) at the time, this song is their magnum opus in my opinion. Just classic from the first note until the last. One of my favorite 90s songs. Timeless. 🙌
Why notoriety? I agree that this is song is their best, but Bittersweet Symphony is a classic. If you're referring to the copyright drama, The Verve got the raw end of the deal in all of that nonsense. They did nothing wrong. They simply cleared the 'Master Rights' to the song but forgot to clear the 'Publishing Rights.' Just poor lawyering. That's all it was. A simple legal oversight. They had previously received permission from the Stones. So the Verve should have received all the royalties from the outset. The story has a happy ending, though (albeit a belated one). Several years ago, Mick and Keith started sending all the royalties to Ashcroft and stopped claiming any rights to the sample.
@@danielwilliams173bro he just meant it was more popular. Nothing about legal copyrights 😂
@@Bravetrain13 Maybe, but he said "notoriety." Notoriety and popularity have totally different connotations (notoriety, of course, is characterized by recognition that is specifically unfavorable). Why would bittersweet symphony be thought of as notorious? It must be because of the legal battle, no? What other reason is there?
Is it me? Or can I hear simple man kind of in this song a little? Sounds really close as well bittersweet mixed in at times?
I was 19 when this came out, I was young, lost, curious and ready for any adventure that came along. 24 years later and now a father, I finally know what it is to be a lucky man!

Was 16 when this was released in 97. Still a magic melody packed full of memories. At 41 now I can't explain what I feel other than I enjoy hearing the beautiful song again.
This is the most uplifting song ever written. I guess many people can reflect at one point in their life, and see, how many times they were just lucky. At 17, I could have been crushed by a ten ton load, I pulled with my tractor, when the brakes malfunctioned on a steep hill. Lucky for me a farmer sowing his field nearby saw, what happened, jumped without regard to his own life, down from his tractor, sprinted 50 yards toward my ever faster going tractor trailer, jumped onto the trailer and pulled the hand brake. Another time I was run over on my bike from a pickup truck, flew 6 yards through the air and landed with my head and upper body on a patch of grass, my head one foot away from a steel fence with concrete foundation, to the left one foot away a concrete electric post and to my right a tree. My hip smashed on the curb stone, but was cushioned by a thick H-D wallet. I only broke two rips and could drive myself to the hospital. But maybe it all has a purpose, because I could save 5 lives after my first encounter with death.
Crème cheese lad
As we age, feelings and emotions that were once so brilliant fade away and leave us with nothing more than a memory of what we remember feeling. It's cruel, but a beautiful reminder of what once was, and possibly could be again if in the right situations. The hard part is finding those moments and living in them.
Me too, and it's simply wonderful!!!
Exactly same feeling from your fellow person who is same age as you.
The lead guitar under all this is epic beyond all proportions.

I think this song is about the fact that being happy is in your control. I think that I have to love myself, even if nobody else will. I can be happy in spite of social rejection. I love this song. I want it played at funeral, even though no one will probably come to my funeral.
+Omar Garad I will be there even though i wont probably be there. Just reachin out a warm hand.
Ron M Thank you for your kindness. The world is a cruel place filled with human beings who don`t understand or care about other people`s afflictions. Sometimes, even the sympathetic ones run out of patience and turn on you. However, I`ll take everything with a grain of salt. One step at a time.

+Omar Garad Crazy man, I just wrote on Facebook that if I go before my friends, make sure this is played and to this day is my favorite song. Well articulated as well, as what you think the lyrics mean. I think spot on. Nice.
+Omar Garad heyy i will be there even by mind too , just take each day at a time , i know that life is tough , cruel & unfair .. it is really to all of us .. u r not alone in that but we have no choice u know , keep going .. be strong think of the theory (the butterfly effect) & think every problem there's always a way out , you just need to slow down & think it over , i always say (the right way is usually longer but safer & shortcuts usualy aren't safe) now instead of a funeral song , think of a song to play on ur birthday or a happy one to keep up ur high spirit High .. if u know what i mean .. salam :)

Yes....include early 2000's....i miss this kind of music where bands rule the music industry.
I miss this time, the 90’s was the time when I came into who I was, and music like this was my soundtrack
Couldn't have said it better. Miss these days.
Along with Grunge right before it was a great compliment! Musically was the best decade, since the 60’s in my opinion! The 70’s and 80’s had some great gems, and music in general (especially 80’s), but the 60’s and 90’s were the best!! The 50’s were in their own league of greatness, but hard to compare in this way.
I'm listening to this as a woman in my 40's and thinking I'm a 'lucky woman' not to only have a man who makes me feel this way but also to be be here after this tragic year x
🏜🦅☕🥞🤙
Wish all women had this outlook on life , instead of must be 6 foot tall, funny, good job, loads of money.
Fair play 👍
This song is simple but beautiful. Not everything needs to be complex in order for it to mean something.
In a sense I agree with you. A small flower or even a beetle has immense meaning, and does not seem complex ... though compared to the most complex piece of stone it is. But this song has its complexity, not least the notion of lucky, which might easily be substituted for blessed. In fact, various people have interpreted the song in various ways (including some that are quite straightforwardly sexual!) But I think it DOES have shades or meaning or layers of meaning. Either way I of course love it, but then I think about the ultimate source of all love and truth everywhere, which is one; or maybe three in one... This song inspires love, and - in my honest opinion - bad things cannot and do not readily come from it. That's precious.
Cuando vienes a Perú estoy ya e la cima de ver y verte Richard 😃
This one is for you bro! The luckiest man in the world, RIP Aaron miss Broski!!!
Listening now - songs like this are pretty timeless.
Timelessness is the mark of greatness
Prefer this to Bittersweet Symphony. Both are absolute classics, but this just hits me right in the feels every time.
what about "slide away"?
Bitter Sweet and this song are from the same Symphony.
Yeah the 90's were great, if only we could go back to those days and know how great they really were....
Well, there were 2 or 3 parts. The early 90s as overhang from 1985 onwards with REM , Stone Roses, James, Charlatans. British indie really made a mark, if mainly at home. Then 1994 when, apart from Oasis, the southerners struck back but in a retro way - Suede, Blur. Then, 1995, and Pulp and Radiohead start to burst the Britpop party before its supposed golden year ( which was actually a relatively dry 90s year for classic albums), 1996.Then once The Verve released Urban Hymns, Radiohead released OK Computer, and Oasis released the underrated Be Here Now, all in 1997, there'd never be that crescendo again (and it was a beautifully magical, epic, time, before many outside of university had the internet too). Lesser talents such as Travis and Coldplay were having wild success by rather cynically copying Radiohead's chin stroking, but instead convincing the average uncool guy 'You're special because you don't act like anything is more special than your beige existence'.
Pop in here few times a year to listen to this masterpiece. Gives me goosebumps everytime.
The Verve should have been bigger than Oasis
Life can suck sometimes, I get depressed and wish I was more successful. But one listen of this and I'm good again.
viva anti enjoy.
Anytime my chicogo friend.
Present day girl who likes "The Verve", the world is very beautiful :)
I agree well said
Yes.
One of my favorite songs of all time!
LYRICS
Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am
But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
Well, I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands
Happiness
Something in my own place
I'm standing naked
Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just who I am
But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
I hope you understand
I hope you understand
Gotta love that'll never die
Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Gotta love that'll never die
Gotta love that'll never die
No, no
I'm a lucky man
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty

Truly the best decade for music AND film.
Karla Gierer I literally cry for that sometimes.... best and worst times ever
From my home town legends
This track never gets old. I could listen to those guitar riffs all day. Sick!!!
This is one of those songs imbued with melancholy for some reason. It never fails to stir up a great swirl of longing wrapped up in the promise of hope. A true masterpiece..
I might have agreed with you for many a long year, but then I was Born Again in the Paraclete, and I see more of the hope and no longing at all.
This song is a JOYFUL one!
@Sid Pheasant glad you have found joy in your parakeets. Good to have a hobby 😉
@@isotopiary Interesting difference in tone between your first post above and the later one. Less apparent melancholy and longing, Iwould say. You are not the first person to engage in the above play on words. Anyway, I am glad you are glad...
@@sidpheasant7585 Your Parakeet brainwashed you? Did you dunk your head in the bird water dish and emerge agape/born again?
They're supposed to parrot YOU, not the other way around :P
Good people and good actions make for long lasting happiness.. not convenient delusions that serve little more than to reduce our personal agency and line the pockets of those deep within the religious institutions.. but I digress! Song is a banger!
@@phattjohnson We write all this in the context of a song that seems to suggest chance happenings, since it's called "Lucky Man". Yet really the lyrics (which for some are open to more controversial interpretations) suggest somebody counting their blessings ... As do I. Surely we can try to be good people doing good things. Jesus does advise us to do that and the Holy Spirit as Paraclete helps with that in an active way, but it all works because of Jesus's enabling sacrifice. Without that, our attempts at goodness will fall short, as we see around us. There is no delusion or brainwashing, and the convenience is an interesting thing, as to be Born Again is to try and do more good for Them, and less bad which obstructs our relationship with Them. If I am less entangled in (very) alluring earthly pleasures, as I now am, that means I have more agency, not less. Time I might once have spent on lust or anger or regret or fear, I now spend giving the good news to people (often sad and suffering people) on TH-cam. That is an active choice, though it is I believe what God wants and what the Holy Spirit has facilitated (facilitation of the spread of love and truth in Father and Son is His traditional role over 2000 years, and before too - though then He was not yet the Paraclete). Whenever I write in this way, whether it be long or short, I NEVER regret this use of time. It is the most worthwhile thing In my life. The goal, as you know, is for us to love the Trinity with all our hearts, souls, mind and strength, meaning that there is no room left for other, lesser things. That's quite tough for a human being (including me), but we try. All the good I could be and do in this world is encompassed by that. It does not prevent me from admiring beautiful human achievements (even though I believe the Spirit helped with them), and apart from culture there is nature for God to work with and for us to love (as Saint Bede stressed). Why would I crave MORE agency than love and "charity", truth and meaning, goodness, eschewing of evil, and admiring culture and nature? In fact, you know well what the agency beyond those things amounts to? I do. Before I had it, now I do not want it. And that is not a beautiful state because it is delusional, but because it is the truest "seeing" of reality, which before I was blind too. Putin's war is not just a very "bad" thing, but is also chaotic, absurd, and devoid of meaning. All evil is like that. And it is built on pillars of sand like love of money, pride, blind judgmentalism and non-forgiveness. We see that clearly. In contrast, the one beautiful thing of 2022 - the mourning of and funeral for Her Late Majesty (96 days on from her Jubilee tea with Paddington!) - is replete with beautiful things that add meaning, show synergy (the significance even of Paddington Bear is HUGE if you start to check it out; as is the meaning of the song "We Will Rock you") and just "make sense". Noting how that is NOT by chance is precious enlightenment. That is what the Paraclete (Helper, Comforter, Advocate) achieves thousands or millions of times each day in His ever-active way. He builds connectivity, synergy. He adds meaning and beauty and truth where there would be a void. In me too. This is the reality, not the delusion, and there is no sadness, and certainly no limitation of agency in it. No profit for Churches either. Indeed, it is all far beyond the narrow and confining term of "religious" in the way you and other critics use it...
This is the song i want played at my funeral. ⚰️✝️

I am the same. For some reason, if I listen to this song then everything is ok again. It is my go to for feeling sad.
It was a sunny day of 1997 when the clock-radio woke me up with this beautiful song. Made my day, following months, years, and to this day it's still the first thing I listen to when I wake up.
Best comment!
I was in Our Price in Epsom first time I heard this.
Absolutely brings me right back to 1997 , sitting in a park in Dublin
1:08 I like in the beginning of the song when he's singing and playing his guitar in front of the window with the birds 🕊️ flying by, that I never really noticed until now.

Born in '68, 70s were ok, 80s were amazing but the 90s... The 90s were something else entirely. It remains the best time of my life to date and this tune is the epitomy of that decade.
Everything you said in your comment applies to me also with the exception of me being born in '71. What an amazing time it was. I had the time of my life and this song brings me back for a brief moment every time I hear it. Sigh*
I was in high school/college in the 90's. You're right, there was nothing like the 90's. This song will always be a timeless classic from my favorite decade
This is REAL music with REAL meaning.
Written and produced by REAL artists with REAL talent.
Dam it's good.
Yea that’s is very true in every single one of Richards and the Verve’s songs.
Don’t worry, your not the only person listening to this masterpiece in 2024👍
Richard ashcroft one of the best voices out of the UK!!!!!!
Legend!!!
What a great song! I can’t believe how many memories it brings back to me. I still long for the good old days.
I used to feel this way, David. But then I was Born Again thanks be to the Holy Spirit of Truth and Love and I realised that such songs as this help us understand the transcending wonder of the love and mercy God has for us. And then, as Jesus wants, we see that NOW is the most important time, including the now in which I wtite to you. Nostalgia is OK in its place, but now is the time you can change something - love more, forgive more, sin less, judge and condemn less - all the things Jesus taught us and the beloved Paraclete is wsiting and longing to help us with, in the middle of this often-rotten and evil-filled world. But we can be of God if we choose, and it starts this moment, if we say yes to it. I did and now I see more and love more and know more.... What's not to like?
@@sidpheasant7585''judge and condemn less'' Perfect words... to tell the church.
@@_FiDeLCAsTrO_ Thanks for saying the words are perfect; and let them apply wherever they may! I am not a priest, though I am fortunate to be influenced by several great members of the clergy, both Catholic and Anglican. The church is not perfect as either a place or an inatitution, and the Holy Spirit paid me a visit while I was in my own bedroom, not In a church...
@@sidpheasant7585 Good for you if that's what makes you a better person.
David yes the good old days but when I listen it makes the good old days now days. I get lost in it and realize I'm still here and so is this fantastic song
Every generation says they would have loved to have lived through a certain decade but being born in 1980 and being a teen in the 90s well, that was a special decade. Music was amazing, The Verve, Oasis, James plus life was good then.
Mate ur right 74 I was born so seen the 80s 90s n naughty so alls good
I grew up in the 90s, but wish I was born a bit earlier. Would have loved to see some of those bands live in their prime. I never had the money or opportunity growing up. It's not the same watching these guys in their 40s and 50s now.
fucking right Darren!!
