To me he is expressing the amount of suffering happening to people across the globe especially in the middle east. He is expressing how fortunate he is to be where he is but also completely fucked up because there is nothing he can do. He feels as though there is no point because we are all doomed anyway but also continuing to exist because he has found some kind of meaning to sustain him. Think in metaphors.
