I attempted suicide just over 3 months ago. Taken by police to Goodmayes psychiatric hospital in London and since then have started rebuilding my life (I'm in my 40s). This is one of only two songs I've found that have allowed me to release my emotions, step back and reevaluate. Music has so much power if you open your heart to it. Thank you Sam.
Hope you're doing well, and are building a more fulfilling path for yourself (I saw you stated your age, not sure why, but remember that there's no shame in starting over at any time in your life)
I love that every time he sings the chorus it sounds completely different. It doesn't matter if it repeats, each time there is a different feeling and a different pain. This song is extraordinary
Utter heartbreak. My brother took his own life some time ago for fear that his being gay would damn him to hell, he was 25. In my experience, the fragile and vulnerable ones are the most beautiful. Loneliness is such a terrible thing. If you have a friend who seems to be missing in action lately, you go seek him out and tell him how much you love him. You make him your number one project because someday he may return the favor. The video is hard to watch, it is so profound. This is so truly music from the heart and I thank you for it.
The scene with all the "boys" trapped in the cell and bouncing off the walls literally breaks me everytime. Such a powerful song and video. So underrated!!
This song is a reference to his mate who killed himself and he references North Shields, his hometown and how the culture of being tough and hard didn’t allow him to open up to his friends and family. That’s my opinion anyways
@agirl cameron I'm from Boro and it has the highest rate of male suicide currently in the UK. 2 more bodies just been found in the Tees. I find we're almost becoming numb to seeing the headlines now. Men need to find another path pronto and keep strong because I cant see life getting any easier with how the world is going. #brothers
@@mickyoutdoors7128 you can look up the suicide rates at the office of national statistics. At first you might think that the numbers sound a bit low (90 in the North East last year) but if you look at the table that looks at the rate per 100,000 you can see that region has the highest average of suicide (13 per 100,000). The council with the second most suicide in England and Wales is Redcarr and Cleveland in the North East, just behind Ceredigion / Ceredigion in Wales.
Since this song and video are about male mental health, the stigma and the double standard that says men can't be fragile or suffering therefore, they must not show their fragility and/or sensibility (for example, crying) I've analysed the video if someone's confused about the things happening here. Here are represented very poignantly the phases of the suffering with several details throughout the video; the ropes (which is a blatant symbol of someone committing suicide), the guy with a plastic bag on his head trying to suffocate himself (VERY BLATANT) and the others watching him and doing absolutely nothing about (this says a lot about the lack of empathy towards the ones who are suffering and doing nothing to help them). Then we find a sort of cathartic moment where the guys let themselves go into a liberatory scream which symbolises men should be free to display emotions as much as women do, and they shouldn't be labelled with derogatory remarks if they cry or are going through trying times and they're searching for help. *_Double standards suck and it's okay not to feel okay. Everyone should be free to display their emotions however they want to and not to repress themselves._* Thank you, Sam, for your point of view about two important topics from different perspectives (Greasy Spoon and Dead Boys).
It's weird how as far as we have come on many social issues, there are still people who box themselves and others into behavioral codes of conduct that are neither healthy or needed. I read today about withdrawal syndrome, and how many teen boys who are not in strong social groups experience bullying, and are increasingly suffering from this. Very often they never really recover. Why are people so mean to each other? Seriously?
Another thing I thought of (could be wrong idk) when they were all jumping about and being "free" they were still confined to a small room surround by only other men representing about men can't or don't show emotion to others I guess. And despite being free in that moment they will always be sort of in a box that the emotions can't really escape??
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. When you reach out and start telling your story, it is difficult to find anyone who could truly comprehend what you are going through. Most of the time it is best staying quiet. Withdrawing, you save those around you so they can continue being happy. You either conquer your inner demons or be conquered....alone. Probably not in line with what you would like to hear, but it is my reality, and I suspect millions more as well.
the cellulon triptometer I don't know. I experienced being bullied from sixth to eighth grade and it was awful. It left me a bit of insecurity. Ten years later and this still bugs me, just the thought of it. But I overcame it. People can be truly knobs sometimes. I know what you mean. No one should be mistreated. No one deserves being put in a corner, left alone, ignored and sometimes even beaten up (in my case). I really don't know what drives people acting like this.

I´ve been to a mental hospital for 2 month because of depression. I love the message. The world isn't aware of the metal health crisis and what it brings for the future. Life gets faster everyday, we are stuck on our phones, real social aspects are getting pushed to the background. This is so strong that I had to make a cover of the song on my channel. Lets spread the message!
you must be really strong to have gone through that. did it help you to go there ? Wasn't it too complicated ? and are you better now ? (happy and loving life or at least not sad) 😕
I can relate to this song. I'm 47 year old artist tortured by my past, my present and future. I've been sick most of my life and I feel tired, and numb. I don't expect pity, because there are many people out there worse off than me. I say respect one another, because we all carry our burdens and some can't find the light in their lives.
I'm glad you're here on earth with all of us, glad you shared your experience with us, glad you have such an open mind and kind heart ! We care about you !
Everyone has something to offer. Your words may give someone enough insight and hope to save themselves! Everybody needs somebody who cares. We are social creatures and the isolation of social media and the discouragement of males to express themselves only makes matters worse. Please find a friend or family member you can trust and let them know how you feel. Just expressing yourself and having someone validate your feelings is a tremendous release of stress and alleviates depression. Finally, get a full nights sleep (7-8 hours) every night, (sleep deprivation leads to and exacerbates depression). Avoid alcohol, (its a depressant). Exercise regularly (at least 3 days a week), Exercise is well known to decrease depression. Practice stress management, learning to control your stress levels helps you cope with life's trials and tribulations. Learn to meditate, it will help you to control your mind... RULE YOUR MIND... Never heard of Sam Fender before. Yesterday I heard this song on a spotify playlist and I had to listen to it again and again. In the end I bought tickets for his concert since I saw he will be in my town in some weeks. All within some hours. This song is a masterpiece. It gives me chills and watching this video for the first time made me cry.
I lost a best friend to taking his own life and this song snaps me In half, when I seen you in St James Park I was in tears of all emotions because it reminded me of my good pal but yet another brother from another made it ❤ keep blessing us with your songs

Sara Ferguson this talks about male mental health, the stigma and the double standard that says men can't be fragile or suffering therefore they must not show their fragility and/or sensibility (for example crying). Sam Fender your song's are amazing. You are world class. They are very thought provoking and raw and emotional and leave an impression in your mind. This is haunting as in the words and the music. Your music is instantly timeless and unique. Thank you.
Got tears in my eyes when this song came out, tears in my eyes when the video came out and tears in my eyes when he performed this live. This is just a next level piece of art
Heard this first at Boardmasters festival, had a tear in my eye there and I have one again now. 'Nobody could explain' puts it so perfectly; we don't know how we got to this reality and we equally don't know how to deal with it. As a generation and as a gender especially we can't express or cope with our emotions, and I think this song displays it so poignantly how lost we are as a society in managing it. I'm struggling, and have been struggling for some years, as I enter adulthood (22) to express how I feel adequately enough to enable others to help. 'nobody can explain' how we undo the decades of implicit miseducation about what is 'acceptable' for men to think and what is an 'acceptable' way to behave. From one Sam to another, thank you for presenting this frustration and confusion so well.
It's so hard growing up but it gets better. I'm 42 and whilst I am a woman I sympathise so much with your plight. I think it has got harder for young men. I blame the fact that less socialising goes on between men and more are using the internet. This isolates people. Try to do as much as possible that involves group activities that are fun and uplifting. Avoid drink and drugs, or at least reduce to a minimum. Music, art, poetry are still the greatest and cathartic routes to take. My own brother took his life when he was 30. I wish every day he was still here. He did not want to get help for a coke addiction. He felt trapped in a bad relationship, but he loved his two sons so much. Get help and be the one who fights to help those who are weaker. We are all this together.
I was a homeless teenage no hope kinda kid, I've slowly grown up and lost everyone I knew at that time either from suicide, drugs or accidents. There are so few of us left and of those left half are mental now from drugs or a life of struggles. Even hanging out feels like a fucking funeral wake at the best of times so I just keep to myself these days. This song really hits the feels. Thank you for making beautiful things.
As a guy myself this is one of the best messages out there, I feel as if I’m not allowed to be “sensitive” but Sam has shown me its okay to be myself so thanks Sam !
Sam Fender is the best new artist to emerge in this country for a long, long time. This Geordie boy's music speaks to and for every working class person north of Birmingham in Britain. Songs we can relate to. Songs that tackle difficult social issues with the rawness of the working class. Sam is probably the best British music act to emerge since Oasis. I urge everyone to download his songs or buy his CDs.
I heard this song on BBC radio 1 yesterday and absolutely loved it! It's so powerful and emotional and sums up Britian in 2018!! The crescendo of the guitar melody and drums is awesome! My brother Rene, sadly took his own life in 2008, aged just 30. It hurt so much that he didn't get the help he needed. The system is broken and we are all fighting to survive everyday. My own writing and music is an attempt to try a nail a message on the wall. We Live! We are Here! We must fight for them!!!
This song still give me goosebumps. Every time I listen to this song my throat just tightens up as you could feel the emotion of this song pouring out from each line. Each line gets more intense and it just gets you. You are definitely a talented musician Sam. You definitely brought light about mental illness in men and that they are often victims of stereotyping. Men should not be judged or frowned upon if they are showing vulnerability or emotions just because they are guys. They have feelings too and it is okay for everyone to show their emotions.
Am always glad to receive positive comments from my lovely fans 🤍🖤 it's absolutely my pleasure bringing sweet melody to you. May God bless you awesomely 🙏
I have listened to this 1000 times in one night and it hits home every single time. Beautiful and absolutely the most meaningful song I’ve heard in a long time.
I don't understand why, when I google Sam Fender, this isn't near the top. For my old boots, this is a work of everlasting art. If anyone, ever, wants to chat because they feel they are unworthy, useless, or the world doesn't care, drop me one guys and girls.
This song makes me think of my dad and how he suffered with addiction and mental health. He’s free from the suffering now, rest in peace dad. Rest in peace brother lost to addiction and liver failure.
As a 55 year old its refreshing to see a talent so good as Sam Fender. This song is relevant across all generations. Feel free to tour in New Zealand my friend. We would love to see you.
back to say that no matter what struggles you may be facing in life it will get better! it will become easier! and you will always have someone who cares! stay strong ❤❤
This is one of my favourite songs from the first album. My half brother died last week. This song came on in the car as I was driving back from my sister's the day I found out. It will now always remind me of him any time I hear it.
Am always happy to receive positive feedback from my fans ♥️ I hope you don't stop listening to music and thanks for your sincerely compliment I appreciate 🙏
sam if u read this, ur progression as an artist keeps inspiring me to keep working towards my dreams. i remember when you came to meet me outside my school and i told all my friends about you and how one day soon u were gonna make it big-time. I guess that day is now :)
A song with a powerful social message accompanied by a very catchy song and hard hitting beat. The video itself helps relay the message and problem. Guys have to learn to talk over and ask for input when problems arise and not to shoulder all their baggage by themselves. Hats off to Sam Fender for his thought provoking song and awareness.
2:12 the boys (aka the negative feelings) are bouncing off the walls and then he tightens up not letting those feelings throw him around (or affect him) any more. Amazing. For all the dead boys.
Such a powerful video Sam. I remember the first time I heard this song in Finsbury Park. It strikes to the core. It’s hard to watch & hard to hear but you speak about real issues. Well done. X
I love this song!! It speaks to me in many ways. My brother took his own life last year and its comming up to the first anniversary, thank you for highlighting a big issue in the uk more people need to listen
He played this live last Thursday and I cried in the crowd, I was stood right up to the railing and I sobbed. I love Sam and everything he stands for, this song has such an important meaning 💔
Am always happy to receive positive feedback from my fans ♥️ I hope you don't stop listening to music and thanks for your sincerely compliment I appreciate 🙏
String stuff. Lyrically, musically and visually - but bloody brilliant and such a strong important message for so many towns - no doubt worldwide but sadly relatable to home too. Love Sam Fender and his musical brilliance!
The last scene with all the boys standing against a wall of "decorated wall hero" paintings and then the main focus goes on the guy in the center of the screen and his background is just an empty white canvas... There was a lot of thought put in this video - much more than you can appreciate if you only watch it once.
ive listened to this song a lot and ive watched mv snippets a lot and i finally have to comment on my favourite part: 1:47 the musics climax in addition with the boys screaming and them jumping wildly around each other in the shower is hauntingly beautiful

Lyrics
The anniversaries are short lived
But they come back around at break neck speed
My world spins so fast
The centrifugal force keep me stuck in the middle
We close our eyes
Learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes
Learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
We all tussle with the black dog
Some out loud and some in silent
Everybody 'round here just drinks
That's our culture
We close our eyes
Learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes
Learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes
Learn our pain
Nobody ever could explain
All the dead boys in our hometown
We close our eyes
Learn our pain

Sam Fender your song's are amazing. You are world class. They are very thought provoking and raw and emotional and leave an impression in your mind. This is haunting as in the words and the music. Your music is instantly timeless and unique. Thank you.
Lovely cinematography, great direction and lighting. Also the story is important and powerful. Overall fantastic collaboration from all involved
We are all this together.
such a talent, heartbreakingly accurate
I was a homeless teenage no hope kinda kid, I've slowly grown up and lost everyone I knew at that time either from suicide, drugs or accidents. There are so few of us left and of those left half are mental now from drugs or a life of struggles. Even hanging out feels like a fucking funeral wake at the best of times so I just keep to myself these days. This song really hits the feels. Thank you for making beautiful things.
Best new British artist in years he’s fantastic, great voice and actually has something interesting to say with his music.
Heard this on BBC1 Wednesday evening...first band thats moved me in quite a few years 👍
i watched the whole youtube ad of this and then came straight here to listen again
DITTO
Snap
Same here ✅
best ad of my life, such an incredible song
me too
I heard this song on BBC radio 1 yesterday and absolutely loved it!
Heard this tonight on Annie Mac’s show.
This lad will make it big time
If anyone’s going through something or is just feeling low, I don’t know you but I love you and you have a purpose❤️
May God bless you awesomely 🙏
the fucking state of you, lol
This is amazing. Everything from the meaning and the cinematography. I'm so glad I clicked on this.
A painfully beautiful song. To all the young men - your life is precious and all too brief without shortening it.
Brits Critics Choice award 2019 ... winner ... Mr Sam Fender!! Woohoo ... so deserved 🔥🖤🔥 Off you fly Sam .... 💥
back to say that no matter what struggles you may be facing in life it will get better! it will become easier! and you will always have someone who cares! stay strong ❤❤
I love falling in love with an album and an artist. What a beautiful thing to experience
Just found out about Sam. Marathoning all his songs - this generation has a storyteller in this guy
This is a beautiful song about a subject no one wants to talk about. The scene at the end where they are fighting to escape is haunting. Amazing.
Words fail.such a powerful message I am 47 and crying like a new born and it feels good.the POWER of music
This is one of my favourite songs from the first album.
My half brother died last week. This song came on in the car as I was driving back from my sister's the day I found out. It will now always remind me of him any time I hear it.
Sam deserves all the recognition. His songs are about the pitiful reality people fear to talk about.
Song & video of the year, I'd say. Sam's gonna be HUGE.
Sam Fender is the greatest find that I've found in some time. The music scene has needed him.
I am so glad this came up as an advert, it's absolutely beautiful
All his songs, love them. Best singer i heard in ages.
This is beautiful
Keep shining mate.
As soon as I saw the ropes I knew what this song was about..... a great artist and story teller
Every now and then, you find a hidden gem.
This song and Sam in general are too underrated, thoroughly deserve that critics choice award. I hope 2019 is his year and he breaks through
Am always happy to receive positive feedback from my fans ♥️ I hope you don't stop listening to music and thanks for your sincerely compliment I appreciate 🙏
Great to see BBC Radio 1 supporting this
Sam Fender, divine in simplicity.
Proud of you guys 🙌🏼❤️
You're beautiful
This is like a perfect track. Everything is just perfection. What a voice!
sam if u read this, ur progression as an artist keeps inspiring me to keep working towards my dreams. i remember when you came to meet me outside my school and i told all my friends about you and how one day soon u were gonna make it big-time.
Imagine,, a singer with vision, soul and a heart.. God damn.. See it, feel it, believe it...
Well done. X
BRILLIANT! What a beautiful tone this boy has! Destined for big things.
Quite possibly my favourite song of Sam's. Criminally underrated, should be on the same level as Seventeen Going Under & Hypersonic Missiles.
I love this song!! It speaks to me in many ways. My brother took his own life last year and its comming up to the first anniversary, thank you for highlighting a big issue in the uk more people need to listen
Goose bumps again sunshine, some boy!!!!! Mint and about time some quality came out the north east!!!!!
This song seriously needs so much more attention, I love you Sam
What a fresh breeze of music. Phenomenally beautiful.
P.S. Spotified!
This song is hauntingly beautiful.
There is a strong voice here and its not just vocal ability. So much respect
I must've listened to this 20-odd times in recent weeks and I haven't got through it without tears in my eyes yet...
Sam's voice is absolutely mesmerizing, this lad will be remembered in years to come as one of the true greats of singer-songwriters.
this lad is quite possibly my favorite discovery in 2018
Absolutely
String stuff. Lyrically, musically and visually - but bloody brilliant and such a strong important message for so many towns - no doubt worldwide but sadly relatable to home too. Love Sam Fender and his musical brilliance!
makes me so sad, but keep watching it over and over again because it is also so beautiful.
This is truly one of the most powerful music videos I've ever seen.
What a unique feeling both the song and video gives you. Wow i have chills
Heavy song man ! helps me deal with losing my dad. This song and spit of you.Thankyou sam and crew.
everything about this is so beautiful
The last scene with all the boys standing against a wall of "decorated wall hero" paintings and then the main focus goes on the guy in the center of the screen and his background is just an empty white canvas... There was a lot of thought put in this video - much more than you can appreciate if you only watch it once.
I'm so pleased you decided to release this song ,even though it was so close to your heart....you don't realise how many people it's saving ❤
Am always glad to receive positive comments from my lovely fans 🤍🖤 it's absolutely my pleasure bringing sweet melody to you ♥️♥️♥️
Jeden z piękniejszych teledysków jakie kiedykolwiek widziałam. Jestem pod ogromnym wrażeniem!
What an amazing song. It needs more plays for both ears and minds alike...
Hope it helps someone struggling. Well done Sam!
This is out of this world
ive listened to this song a lot and ive watched mv snippets a lot and i finally have to comment on my favourite part: 1:47 the musics climax in addition with the boys screaming and them jumping wildly around each other in the shower is hauntingly beautiful
i just cant get past how amazing sam is shocks me
