Great car and great review. I’ve a Spyder PDK on order and already own a 981 Spyder which I’m keeping. @@JBthemanwithcars Thanks for the reply; you found the long gearing is also a issue on track? I only drove a 981 GT4 on the street and there was indeed the long gearing noticeable. But I was thinking it would be maybe less of an issue on track with the higher speeds there (then on the street).

Great review. This is a one of a kind driver’s car. Outside of a C8, there isn’t another car produced today like this set up, as far as I can tell. On top of that, this thing is gorgeous, more so in person than photos and videos. It drives sublimely, perfectly balanced between chassis and power, sonorous high-rev engine note, perfect driving position and ideally set up pedals & gear box. I’ve got mine in 2020 and haven’t regretted one single mile of its 8000 ODO miles. It is by far the best driving Porsche I’ve ever driven out in the canyons on a sunny Sunday morning. If you find one, get it. You will not regret it. I recommend the bucket seats. It really connects you to the car so much better when slinging the car around the bends. I've always been a coupe owner, but I would gladly have that car over 95% of coupes and well above any drop top in production today.

I always love a Porsche Review and Porsche have pulled it off again with the 718 Spyder. Just can't wait to get back into my 986 Boxster S as its always a blast on a twisty B road
Nice review Matt. The spec on Adrian's 718 Spyder is perfect. It looks fabulous. A couple of points I would highlight. The engine sound doesn't compare to the 981 Spyder. Which is a shame. An after market exhaust can partly fix that though. The steel brakes are good but anything that reduces weight is always welcome, especially on such a lovely sports car, so I would opt for PCCB if ordering new.
I don't folks that actually own these cars would agree. Having owned both, I can tell you the note is a bit different but still exciting. Plenty loud and sounds thrilling past 5-6k. I think the exhaust mods sounds ... like mods. Can't beat the Porsche engineers.
As a 981 driver, I applaud the return of the flat 6. The Spyder is a cool car, but personally I'd go for the Boxster 4.0 GTS with PDK, as £10K cheaper , same engine as the Spyder plus an electric roof.
But no curvy booty like the Spyder. Such subtle differences make this car so much prettier...nothing against the GTS as it is a reasonable choice...as you stated.
If the long gearing is really a problem, there are after-market shops that can change out the rear differential (altho it could be pricey). For that matter, I'm wondering what the tab would be to take a 4.0 out of a wrecked GT3 and put in the Spyder, giving you 100 more hp (520 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of raw torque) and a red-line of 9,000 instead of the 8,000 on the Spyder's 4.0.
I have to say - most impressed with the review....very watchable and amiable presenter unlike some like MrJWW etc where it’s a cringe fest. Keep up the good work SCD 👍
Great review and some epic shots by Super Dan!!! What’s the perfect Spyder for me having owned the 981 and driven the 718 on several occasions? I would love the 981 softer suspension, more compliant, 718 engine as the extra torque is plentiful, 981 steering, weightier and more feedback, 981 sound track (up there with best) and all attached to a PDK box and used purely for euro tours roof down in the sunshine 😍😍😍
Love my 718 GT4 so much I bought one. Dropping the heated buckets on a new one - big mistake Porsche. It’s why I bought a used one instead. OPF delete and you’re in sound heaven with a nice chunk of extra torque thrown in.
This is so funny. Some journalists keeps on repeating what they once read from Porsche’s press material: the 981 Spyder is not a proper GT-Porsche and the 981 GT4 was from another world. This is true mostly only on paper. They share the most important bits. Yes the front end wasnt adjustable on Spyder and the the GT4 had the 991 GT3 front end and steering rack. But you know what? I’ve had the both cars since 2016 and I’ve naturally driven then back to back many times. The difference is very very hard to notice. Throw a set of Michelin Cup 2’s to the Spyder and it matches the GT4 9 times out of ten. The Spyder is btw lighter than the GT4. The bigger error people do is that now that the Porsche’s press material said that 718 Spyder is a proper GT-division’s product, they think it is in totally different league compared to the 981 Spyder. Well, actually, they are right: the 981 is almost 100 kg lighter and it sounds 100 times better. Infact, the 981 Spyder is one of the best sounding cars ever. The 718 Spyder sounds like a vacuum cleaner compared to it. The new engine on the 718 is not bad, but it it’s not a homerun. It’s heavy. It seems that the engine struggles to put down the claimed 420 hp at dynotests. Steering is lighter than in 981 Spyder and thus muted. The small diffrences in aero do not make wonders to the driving experince, no matter what press material says. And then there are production figures. There are only 2400 981 Spyders made for the global market. All this said, the 718 Spyder is not a bad car. Heck, it’s brilliant! And a beauty! But unlike many (journalists) think, the 981 Spyder is the better car.
Firstly, I m truly impressed by the production quality of this review that underlines the point you re making: it s how it feels and not the numbers. That being said, the numbers are still truly impressive but any kinda hot hatch can get you in legal trouble quite easily nowadays but they don t feel the same whilst doing that. The spec of this demo car is bold but I love it and it suits the Spyder. I understand the criticism ppl voiced regarding the switch to 4cyl but honestly, it didn t stop me from getting my Cayman- at all. But okay, the Cayman is very different to a Boxster. Overall, you do lose in the "sense of the occasion" department but I wanted a sports car for daily use that still shines when you got the chance or feel like giving it a go. Even in the dullest commuter traffic, the Porsche DNA shines through whilst you enjoy good fuel economy and an overall package - chassis in particular - that simply laughs at the commonly more shouty competition when you feel like unleashing its potential...and yes, it still doesn t sound great when you do but the cars inclined to keep up at first fading away in the mirror still make you smile- a lot. That being said, the Boxster is a different case as I should see the day I got one as a replacement car. It s still capable but once you got no roof, your brain instantly shouts "roadster" at you... and this is simply not what the 4cyl Boxster is or was destined to be. The Boxster is still a great car and there s a market for it but funny enough, this genuinely positive thing makes matters worse for it when it comes to enthusiasts. As you still can feel the good chassis and the promise of the Porsche legacy, you struggle that it doesn t feel like the roadster your brain tells you it should be. Therefore, if you re into open tops and generally are into the brand, do yourself a favour and stomach the substantially higher cost for the Spyder.
Hi, nice Spyder review. Can i just ask where to get the gold Spyder badges as shown in this review since I would like to put them on my 718 Spyder as well. They look great. Thanks.
I have this car and never put the top up. If I could change things I would have ordered the GTS Boxster in stead as I hate this manual roof. Luckily I store mine inside my garage when parked. Cheers from Canada.
@@scd I agree. Was wondering your thoughts on a 675lt spider vs a speciale ..... looking to add to my current lineup (scud, 911r, gt4 clubsport) . Again love your videos keep them coming !
Nice review, and such a car ! Some say though that the engine is lacking the extra bit of emotion that a 911 gt3 has. Did you have a chance to drive one ? I would love to se a Boxster that you could drive like a hooligan when you feel like it, or enjoy the ride on a sunny winter afternoon.
One of the best looking cars imo. Im really trying to understand the passion for cars tho, since im looking to buy one...people get super nerdy about them (ive driven this car 3 times already btw..) For me its a bit like a vegan trying to convince me to eat an avocado toast for dinner instead of steak and fries. I can guarantee that the moment you learn to ride a motorcycle properly, you're going to look back and laugh at how nerdy you were with those numbers and horsepower. Im not dissing cars, I just want to inform you that there is an even more exciting vehicle that you have to try if youre into motorsports! Take the chance while you're young, you truly are missing out if you think this car is exciting... Also, you would make a very good motorcycle journalist.
If we going to be historically correct first 911 were 4 cyl. With the stupidly complicated roof top I rather have a normal one even with the 2.0 is more then adequate. The Spider is more a toy.
Great drive video but I have to say , seeing your wiper sweep every 30 seconds on a sunny day drove me nuts. Turn off your intermittent wipers already!
"This is on Pilot Sport Cup 2s, it's a little but damp, 7.5 degrees ........ so I'm being a tad careful with it but .....". Anyone who knows Matt's "a tad careful" will know what this means :D th-cam.com/video/j1qpq87tGZQ/w-d-xo.html
In the US, base price is right at $100k. Not cheap. And then the Carbon buckets at $5900USD and PCCBs at almost $9k...those are the two most expensive options.
Purists are afraid of change. I get it . But sometimes companies need to change to attract the next generation of buyers . Do they always get the change right ? No . Should they completely change at least one model? Yes . And do so by inviting a few dozen people in from the generation you're trying to attract and give them the opportunity to drive , and critique your product giving you insight as to what they want. Never guess . Guessing can ruin a great product. Maybe there isn't anything wrong with your product and there's no need to change it . Maybe the problem is this new generation just doesn't know about your product and needs to be introduced...
Hardly, since it’s only a 2-seater with small luggage space(-es), and no tow bar😅 As a sports car it’s great, but the gearing, roof and sound is not as good as the best alternatives.

What a guy 👏 as the maker intended!! Enjoy
Great video my dream car!! Well done mat!
Thanks!
It's not a Boxster... it's a 718 Spyder.
Great video. Why are the wipers on 😂
Good question! 😂
great review and great car. but i feel like it needs a bit more power.
That’s a fine balance 😅
@@scd I agree. Was wondering your thoughts on a 675lt spider vs a speciale ..... looking to add to my current lineup (scud, 911r, gt4 clubsport) . Again love your videos keep them coming !
Isn’t the point of PCCB that you don’t need to replace them? And they don’t dump brake dust all over the wheels. No brainer.
Do the wipers turn off
Only turn them off when it rains
Perfectly reviewed.
Great review Matt. Can't wait until my Spyder arrives in mid January. But what was with the windshield wipers going the the sky was blue?
This is something we’d love to know the answer to as well 😂
Just add the 4.5L conversion for 100 more horses and it's perfect
Nice review, and such a car ! Some say though that the engine is lacking the extra bit of emotion that a 911 gt3 has. Did you have a chance to drive one ? I would love to se a Boxster that you could drive like a hooligan when you feel like it, or enjoy the ride on a sunny winter afternoon.
Why are the wipers on?
It had just rained when we filmed this, and after the rain stopped the sun came out. Wipers are on because of road spray :)
Outstanding review!! RWM
Well it's not actually a Boxster anymore , it's just known as the Spyder, it's a GT car.
Yep that’s what he says ✌️
Spec is great except the seats. If it's a top-down only car, it should have the 18-way seats with SEAT HEATING.
But, racecar!
718 is arrived as any model before you can’t compare. I own a 981 gts does not compare as it lacks a lot to the 718 as any previous model.
Why's it got GT4 centre caps on a spyder?
Cos they’re GT4 wheels
They are the wheels it came with, GT4 and Spyder have the same wheels, SO why has the owner put GT4 centre caps on?
Perfect
One of the best looking cars imo.
Im really trying to understand the passion for cars tho, since im looking to buy one...people get super nerdy about them (ive driven this car 3 times already btw..)
For me its a bit like a vegan trying to convince me to eat an avocado toast for dinner instead of steak and fries.
Also, you would make a very good motorcycle journalist.
why the convertible roof is not automatic
If we going to be historically correct first 911 were 4 cyl.
With the stupidly complicated roof top I rather have a normal one even with the 2.0 is more then adequate. The Spider is more a toy.
Great drive video but I have to say , seeing your wiper sweep every 30 seconds on a sunny day drove me nuts. Turn off your intermittent wipers already!
It had just rained when we filmed this. Wipers are for road spray!
yes
Roof up when you drive in Dubai, with 50 Celsius, of course everything is relevant 🤔🥰
Haha most of us don’t have that problem
Whete how do get the “Spyder” in gold?
The spider quite literally has a 911 engine in it.
Haha you know him too well 😅
How much would a Porsche Boxster like this cost
In the US, base price is right at $100k. Not cheap. And then the Carbon buckets at $5900USD and PCCBs at almost $9k...those are the two most expensive options.
I wanna have a porsche man
It’s a baby 918
Hmmm....let's see, blue sky, so why are the wipers on?
One flaw: not a switch operated hardtop convertible
A flaw that makes it one of the best looking convertible with the top up....of course Porsche's excuse is weight.
👌👌🏎🏎
Says a man who knows 💥
Not a GT division product. Just engine tuned by GT devision. Not even a GT devision engine
It most certainly is... The chassis is more GT division than anything on the car.
You got your windscreen wipers on brother.
Hardly, since it’s only a 2-seater with small luggage space(-es), and no tow bar😅
As a sports car it’s great, but the gearing, roof and sound is not as good as the best alternatives.
Still this story of "poor's porsche"?? Please...
only 2 criticisms but they are huge....this gearing? this sound? doesn't fit the car
Please, please, please, shut your wipers off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.
There is no freakin sound of the car :(
100%
Amazing car. But I’m sorry, even a shit BMW can have an electric sunroof and so should this
