I recently took delivery of one and I can share the following: -the suspension is not harsh at all, I’d compare it to a Megane RS Trophy (which I daily and is not harsh, especially on Eastern European roads). I even like putting the car in it’s harsher suspension setting, just for fun -the sound is amazing, not too quiet. It can be quiet when idling at certain RPM, but push the accelerator and you’re good. - I was jumpscared by the cylinder deactivation - as a 190cm guy that has the stock 2way seats, you sit just low enough, although in terms of being wide, they need to be worked in - the car hasn’t scraped on speed bumps or even crappy roads, a thing that many reviewers mentioned - the basic car stereo isn’t half bad, although it can rumble the stereo covers a bit. Solution - increase the volume (it does wonders). - drove the car for 120 km at 140km/h with the top down on the highway, music blasting, honestly the most fun I’ve had in a car ever. To sum up, if you see any reviews that shit on cars, know that it’s for clout, and that the best reviewer is the person that’s gonna buy the car, WHO also does a test drive beforehand. Even close friends with turbo s-es and gt3s agree that this is a serious car and a spicy little jalapeño.
And as for reaching 100,000 individual supporters you are owed 100,000 thanks for all the entertainment you’ve provided and all the hard work you’ve put in.
I loved my S2000. It was a great car, however, it was too loud on the highway. I replaced it for a 2007 Boxster S. I didn't lose any money on the S2000 which I drove for 2 years. I now have a 2020 718 Spyder & love it.
I had a 3.2 Boxster "S" for a couple of years. Pretty much perfect. But I wanted more Ummph! I thought bliss a 4.0L Boxster Sypder 918. Sadly it's a tent top not a soft top with a heated glass rear screen! It's put me off. The Boxster was the car that saved Porsche from bankruptcy. The Caymen devalued it in my humble opinion. Poor man's 911. If they had put their efforts into developing the mid-engined perfectly balanced supercar it would have wiped the others out. The 911 is just 70+ years development of the Volkswagen Beetle & all it's derivatives? 911 is rear axle, transmission(Trans Axle), Clutch & engine hanging out the arse end!
I was actually one of the first to see the Spyder, and I am 90% sure that I would indeed purschase one of these over a base 992 911. Probaby with some exhaust modifications.
Rob Tap that’s a perfectly good shout, though I’m not entirely sold on the 992 911. I’d love to get into a 991.2 GTS though, they make an absolutely amazing noise!
Appreciate the review. I’ve had my 2020 718 Spyder for almost 4 years now and put on about 8,000 miles. I’ve ordered it with the bucket seats which are not at all uncomfortable as people say and I have no problem going on a 400 mile driving loop on a day. I also optioned the carbon ceramic brakes and they are phenomenal and confidence boosting. I am not sure if there is another car that is naturally aspirated, mid-engine, 2-seater, convertible with a 6-spd manual gear box out there that is put together as well as this car. A C8 Corvette is an option for sure and that is a very high performing car but I didn’t find its driving characteristics to be as enjoyable as the 718 Spyder, nor the C8’s styling as refined as the Porsche. The 718 Spyder is a quintessential sports car with more than enough performance and I am pretty sure I am keeping mine.
Congratulations on hitting 100k. You deserve it, quality content continuously provided for the petrolhead. I guess the 550 will be getting some use in celebration this weekend.
I live in Canada where it gets very cold even so I did not get heated seats. I store my Spyder from Halloween until mid March each year, The great thing about storing the car during the winter it's like I get a new car each spring. CHEERIO!
Congrats on reaching the 100k mark my friend. Definitely well deserved; in fact you deserve even more subscribers in relation to the quality of your content. Good job, keep it up!! 👍🏿😀
Fell in love with your channel after watching your fn2 type r! Really good stuff your one of my favorite car channels on TH-cam now! Keep up the great work.
The spyder is the most unique car on the boxster/cayman platform, that rear and and roof is just so cool and special. Would take one anyday over the GT4, even back in the last generation I still preferred it
The problem with convertibles is that after a few years of ownership, you will hear creaks, squeaks, and squeals emanating from the area where the roof meets the windshield and the hinges and pivot points. This will drive you crazy after a while. This is why there are so many used convertibles for sale as opposed to a non-convertible version. After the novelty of owning a convertible wears out, people don't want them anymore.
congrats on the 100k and a great spyder to celebrate...I think the spyder might be the first time I can imagine overcoming my resistance to Porsche as a lazy default choice - however great they are i'd always want something a little more unexpected
Thanks James, you should really have a million subs!!! One of the things few people realise about the Boxster Spyder is that it's actually lighter than the GT4 so it's ever so marginally quicker too.
Hi James and sorry for my english...i’m french. I’m not sure it’s very important to have the GT4 chassis for a road use. The Spyder is built for driving pleasure on beautiful roads, not for the ultimate performance on track. That’s why i think the best car is the 981 spyder, no PASM , no particle filter and great sound for less money. Please try to find one and review it for us. 👍
I have the 981 spyder and with race headers and a tune, it not only looks like a Carrera GT, it sounds like one to. They are surprisingly fast. Best secret in the car world and a future classic.
The stock GT4 & SPYDER beat the Carerra GT around the Nordischefia by 12 seconds. Now add race headers, sport cars, exhaust & tune and it is within 5 seconds of the new 992 GT3. To beat the 992 GT3 one would need larger tires like it plus PCCB lighter brakes & rims. Then you have an open roof better Porsche than the mighty 992 GT3!!!
It sounds good on a video. It would be wonderful to hear it back to back with the previous GT4. I like Spyders, basically a roofless cars with a bit of cloth when you absolutely need it.
Definitely my favorite current Porsche, after the GT3 Touring, which I think is now out of production. I remember falling in love with the 911 Speedster, but when I saw this new Spyder, and it's perfect proportions, it made the 911 Speedster look odd. That massive rear end that just doesn't look right to me anymore, after seeing this beautiful new Spyder.
JayEmm: I love your SF Giants shirt, thank you for paying homage to my hometown baseball team ⚾️👍🏻. I'm a new sub to your channel and can't wait to view your 550 Maranello reviews video, one of my all-time favorite Ferraris 👍🏻

The suspension setup in this is entirely different to the non GT4/Spyder cars - not so sure about the steering rack itself. But the feel is from more than just the rack
@@JayEmmOnCars - is it though? You said of the gts that Porsche “failed” wrt steering feel (and that was surprising, given how the company overall has made the transition from hydraulic to electric steering).....the suspension set up (and its goodness or lack thereof) would be something that is communicated through steering......but poor steering feel is the absence of that information isn’t it? I remain confused as to how Porsche could produce the same car with dramatically different steering feel quality in different parts of the range. Love your videos, but this one is a bit of a head scratcher for me. It is a very good car compared to the gt4 but obviously misses out on the aero and tiny bit of power. If you can’t get a gt4 then definitely get a gts mate
“On a straight stretch” I think you may be missing the point of this car when you are talking about straights. Obviously your car which is basically a mussel car designed for straight line speed does well in a straight line. This is a small light car designed to be amazing in the corners.
Specs show that a even a bog standard 718 Boxster with 2.0 engine is quicker than what a brand new E55 would have achieved - to 60 mph, 1/4 mile and in-gear times. So sorry mate, but you must have taken him by surprise, or more likely, he "didn't floor it"!! Incidentally, an "S" would have left you for dead - that can hit 60 in 3.5 secs. Also, given your E55 is around 15 years old, "your car" would have lost very significant BHP... so to honest your comment is laughable. The reality is that even a bog standard 718 Boxster would slaughter your E55. Fact.
BOTB love to advertise on literally every video on TH-cam, but then they make so much money off everyone but the 1 person who actually wins each time that I guess they can... Other than having one of the most annoying sponsors around, great content as always.
I agree with others a bit harsh on the 981 and not totally objective on the 718 which is a great car but weighs 300 lbs more, 0 to 60 similar and exhaust not near as good and stiffer ride (which you may or may not like). The market place likes the 981 as depreciation has been minimal, partly due to limited production.
