Lovely car Pete. I recommend you drive a PDK gearbox and then give your opinion on manual v PDK. In my opinion the PDK gearbox really suits the 718 GT4 and Spyder. Especially in PDK Sport, it feels like a mini GT3. I owned a 981 Spyder for 18 months and used it as a daily driver. I managed to put the roof down in 23 seconds in one of my videos. Hey :) Great video! Were getting a 718 Spyder too, also in Gt Silvermetallic. But we "forgot" to choose the 2 way adjustable automatic climate control. Its now in production so its to late to change the configuration. What do you think of the standart climate control? Is it complicated or annoying to use? Would be amesome if you could give me an answer to this question. The fact that we forgot to choose it drives me crazy. Greetings from Germany! Your videos are awesome :)
Its fine for a weekend car but very slow operation. I didnt spec the auto climate but if its your daily it may be annoying. Thanks for the kind words 🙌🏻👍🏻
@@GanstarNoah1899 my pleasure. I wouldnt worry about it to be honest because the spyder is meant to be more racecar. I never get into my spyder and say, man i wish i had automatic climate control. It doesnt have an automatic roof either and i dont have steering wheel buttons or auto dim mirrors or any of the gadgets. I like it better that way. Cheers 🍻
@@plife911 Very good point there! Your absolutly right, the spyder is much more like a "racecar" than the normal 718 boxter series. You could also call it a purist drivers car. Multifunctional steering wheel, automatic climate control and other gadgets are not important in such a car. Thanks again for your opinion! Now I feel much better with my decision. We also picked it as a manual. In 2 weeks we can finally pick it up. Great anticipation to drive the car for the first time.
🤣. Ive been in all gears at all speeds including cruising on the highway in 6th but not very often. Also been in higher gears just putting around town or when on phone calls so its quiet in the cabin.
Nice. Love all of those 2500 shifts. Don't think I have ever short shifted as much as you have. would of like to have seen a few 8500 RPM shifts. Pdk would be great for track. What about the alcantera wheel, would you still do that? Heard lots of people don't like the wear pattern. If you are going to track the car, steel is better than ceramic, due to excessive wear.
Going faster in the exhaust videos where i dont need to speak. The car is a little loud for voice audio over 5000 rpm. I do have some footage mobbing the gt3 in more recenr videos
@@plife911 I like the short shifting personally, basically everyone in videos constantly drives like a lunatic. Gears aren't too long if you don't go to redline!
2021 Spyder with PDK owner......roof operation not a big issue.....sound is awesome...start stop issue... just hit the cancel button...THIS CAR IS A BEAST......The 718 Spyder is an incredible machine (Super Car).....This review is a joke! This car is amazing!
Thanks for watching. I was clickbait nitpicking to some extent. The positives far outweigh the negatives. Agree on the car being amazing even compared to supercars
Yeah the more i drove it the better it was. Im glad the gt3 is long also. These cars are animals especially with headers its super violent. The less shifting the better imo
Hello Pete, is it possible that the bucket seats of your friends Spyder has been - aftermarket - inclined more, so that sitting in it is a little less straight / more comfortable? I'm particularly interested in this because I 'm seriously thinking about buying a 718 Spyder, and I would like to order the bucket seats, but they are really to straight for me, I mean that I want to sit a little less straight ... is this possible?
Yeah he has the reclining brackets. He loves it. I just added foam pads and got some lumbar support and the positon was fine. U can check my instagram for the foam install pics
Hi Pete. Greetings from the UK. Nice review giving your own personal opinion after having driven the car. Really like the gold Spyder badges on the side and the back of your friends Spyder. Please can I ask where to get these from as I would like to put them on mine. Do they come in gold or would I have to get them painted?
As a fellow 718 Spyder GT Silver Spyder owner, I enjoyed the review. Can you share where you ordered your bucket seat inserts from? Thanks and looking forward to the exhaust mod video. My exhaust from Soul came in last month and looking forward to installing once we get out of this winter weather. 🏎 💨
@@plife911 Much appreciated. If either of you have any interest in a set of steeply discounted OEM Dunlop Race Maxx 2s that are basically new...let me know, as I'm also in IL.
I am a lucky owner of a 2021 718 silver Spyder with burgundy interior and carbon seats as well!!! and taking it out for a first drive today. I was wondering where your friend ordered the black inserts and black leather shift knob from. Love the inserts as well.
@@plife911 thanks , I am assuming that the steering wheel black inserts were suncoast as well and most importantly do the seat inserts have a traditional pe pita ( black and cream ) or is there an alternating black and burgundy pattern as well) I can’t feel in the video.thanks

Congrats on the new Porsche. I have to ask, how do you compare the Spyder to your olde 911 T? Shifting and engine and exhaust sound. I went from. 991.1 S to a 991.2 GTS but am really considering a 718 GT4 now. Would like your feedback
@@plife911 Oh no, cmon. That much better? You’re killing me. What’s more fun, the Spyder or you previous R8? I know both are different, but I’m guessing the Spyder is just more fun.
@@plife911 I see thank you! I am lucky enough to have an allocation to order one, I live in Los Angeles so whether isn't an issue. Just deciding if I really want to daily this car or not is my only concern!
@@plife911 Hey could you please tell what the distance between your front splitter and the ground is? Trying to figure out how close it is to what I'm currently driving! 🙏
Beautifull car...sort of reminicent of my 2008 Saturn Sky 😉 (minus the engine and the price tag 😂). I must say I fail to understand the need of such a powerfull engine on a convertible. To me, past 80 mph with the top down, the ride really starts to be less enjoyable. But definitly an amazing automobile! Congrats!
Never understood the gear ratio complaint. On a track you might want a different setup.but on the street? Many cars nowadays hit 60 mph in 1st and 85 - 95 in 2nd. Hell my 22 year old Viper pulls 59 in1st and 93 in 2nd. The gear ratio in my 987.2 Cayman has never been an issue for me. Great video! Subscribing.
I'm 6"4 in your opinion could I fit comfortably in this Porsche? A Lamborghini Huracan I have no chance, you have to be 5"10 or less which is ridiculous.
The bose is actually pretty decent. In my gt3 touring bose is garbage. I would re spec the bose in the spyder but now there is a bose shortage maybe consider the berm. Others have stated the berm is very good in the 718
He went for nothing too crazy!?!...the bucket seats, Carbon brakes and the PDLS (Plus) Bi-Xenon) headlights - that's about 10k right there of options!! Like the after market yellow Porsche strip on the door which goes nicely with the brake callipers.
I’ve owned 5 Porsches and was at the F1 track for the new 911 launch. This dude sounded drab at first but then I’m like damn, dude really knows his stuff! Woulda love to talk to him at the track instead of a bunch of posers 😂😂😂
@@plife911 I'm a previous 991.1 C2S then 718 Spyder owner myself. Considered the R8 V10 Plus as the next step. Wondering what your opinion was about the R8 compared to 911 and 718?
R8 was boring unless you were going way too fast for the street. If i had to do it again i would have skipped it and gone for the lambo because its dialed in to feel more special at all speeds. Also im enjoying the 718 more than the turbocharged 911. My next 911 will be NA 💯
Love it, best looking Porsche at the moment even better looking than the 991 Speedster as the A$$ is to fat. Thanks for the review, although its yr view, appreciated. Sorry about the roof i don’t agree its fun to do in my book same for the manual transmission its all done for a reason. For one the roof saves weight and looks good matching the lines of the humps, the manual tranny Porsche reasoned short gears will kill you as to much to handle for most. I own one in the South of Spain and had the top up ones by pickup at Porsche have fun Guys its the best looking car Porsche makes.
So gears don't look as long as some reviewers say? I see you putting third gear very fast, according to some videos you can be in second gear until you hit 137km/h. I'm so confused haha. Great video by the way.
I think driving like a hooligan isnt good for the transmission in general 🤣 thankfully replacing the clutch/pressure plate/master cylinder is like $5k with labor on the manual (vs $20k for a pdk replacement). What baffles me is that porsche has launch control programmed into the manual, but ive never tried it because it seems pointless and violent on a stick car
Also forgot to mention the gt3 has transmission software that allows you to no lift shift without damaging the gearbox. It pins the revs at the current position so you dont bang off the limiter
I wish i could have afforded to keep it man! Great car, it drove beautifully and looked like the dog’s bollocks. Also since driving more 718s and GT3s in manual i actually think the 718 gearbox is my favorite despite the long gears
@@plife911 It doesn’t even have to be electric. It could be like the hardtop on the 918 Spyder, which would probably weigh less than the retractable top on the current 718 Spyder. Ideally it would be a 2 piece removable hardtop, made of carbon fiber, aluminum, or magnesium, and it could be stored behind the seats.
One thing I don’t understand is why you are driving it on really dull suburban roads Would like to see it being driven on the sort of traffic free twisting fun roads where it belongs Otherwise nice review
Love that car, but i just saw a video where it lost to the new BMW M2 CS in a straight race, and the convertible is going to add weight, so this car isn't quite fast enough, faster than anything that i have ever driven and the looks, the looks....
Stock its not super fast I agree but with a full exhaust its actually more responsive and noticeably faster. Probably as fast as a 992 carrera s at speed. The car gets violent theres alot of power uncorked especially with headers/opf delete
Last in a straight race? I think you’re missing the point. You buy this go around corners not drag race. If straight line speed is your thing, there are many other choices.
I'm sorry to be late to the party and disagreeing on some points. I also own one since Feb. 2020 here in Italy. Since then i only put 2100 kms on the clock due to lockdown etc. Before this i owned a 718 2.0 which was a brilliant car for its price range and with PDK gearbox it was fairly quick (I reckon it got an engine map with 355ps and 450nm of torque). This one, considering that is about 50% more expensive, it has been pretty disappointing. 1. Engine delivery is flat and does not feel like a 420 ps engine, i was expecting more character and shove at high rpm with a rev limiter which for a n.a. engine in this class is only 8k. 2. Gear ratios especially second, are really tall for use on twisty roads and accelation as well. Gearbox fell is good but not so stellar. And finally the roof which is utterly and stupidly complicated, involving rear boot as well. You can't even open the latter with the roof up. A Lotus for example is a much more simple and straightforward process. You release the latches on side rails and you're done. Now i'm desperatly trying to get rid of it, the car is advertised from a few month but nobody seem to want it.
Ciao,Roberto ! Felt kind of sad reading your opinion on the Spyder, am planning on buying one used at 10.000km and price at around 104k euro. Many reviews are very positive on the manual Spyder in general.. But right now questioning my decision or maybe should be looking into a Pdk Spyder or 718GTS 4.0. Any advice from you ? Grazie mille !
@@plife911 Hi ! Was seriously considering buying one at 7k miles, 100keuro, beautiful spec..., would you agreen on his opinion ? Seems like a serious let-down since never had the chance to drive it yet. Or what other Porsche would you suggest in this price range ? Wouldn't mind manual 😀
if you live like in Mediterranean climate with 300+ sunny days, you wouldn't put roof up at all you will just drive in garage.. Spyder is all about roof down from my perspective, cos it is pain in ''a..''
Roof down its such an amazing experience. Have been doing it this month in the 30’s and 40’s Farenheit (under 10C). That said, i would still store it with the roof up because it gets wrinkled and there are two circular tabs the make spots on the top of the roof after a few weeks. But you are correct the top down experience is what this car is all about! 💯
@@plife911 It also has the exact same performance stats as the base cayman I already own. That surprised me, considering this car is $45, 000.00 CA$ more than a base Cayman.
For 100 grand I would’ve just saved up a little bit more and got the base model 911 Turbo Carerra. Not quite the Turbo S but pretty damn close for a lot less money but much better than any Boxter. Kind of like an in between car between the Boxter and the Turbo S.
Its a good option. You get rear seats and a better street car. But its not NA and you cant get a 6 speed manual in any carrera (or any manual on the base). It also doesnt have the GT special sauce. But i totally get it the spyder is so expensive you can totally cross shop a 911 now
Totally wrong …. This car is nicer to look at more fun and better engine than anything 911 other than the Turbo and Turbo S of Course … also it is more a collectable car then any carerra … FACTS
I have to drive the base 911 Carerra, and settle this for myself once and for all. I drove the GT3 around Mosport here in Ontario. I also drove my base Cayman around the same track. I can't say the GT3 was that much more impressive at all, especially when you consider the whopping price difference!! The engine is still better placed in the 718. Porsche finally admitted this, or they would not have put a GT3 engine in the Cayman and created the 718 GT4RS. I fear the 911 Carerra will drive like an executive luxury car, and not a sports car.
You can no-lift-shift any car...once! But seriously, if you want to no-lift-shift you should have gotten a PDK. The beauty of the 6 speed is that you have something more to do with your right foot than just try to push it through the firewall! The only complaint I have with my 718 GT4 6 speed is the PCCB brake sensitivity that makes it harder to heel-toe on gentle deceleration. Your comment about the engine sound is interesting because everyone's focus is so much on exhaust sound but listen to the inside noises in a real race car and they are dominated by mechanical sounds...which is just what you get in the GT4/Spyder...

@@plife911 Thank you for your quick answer and your honest opinion. I appreciate that a lot :) Best regards
Good content. Like your spec. We have a 16 Blue GT4 with PCCBs and yellow stitching similar to yours coming next week from Colorado.
Thank you and congrats! Love blue and yellow. 🙌🏻👍🏻
What’s highest gear you put the car into and what speed?
🤣. Ive been in all gears at all speeds including cruising on the highway in 6th but not very often. Also been in higher gears just putting around town or when on phone calls so its quiet in the cabin.
What phone holder is that? How do you get those seats?

Im short shifting so u can hear me. I dont drive like that off camera.

Thanks for watching. I was clickbait nitpicking to some extent. The positives far outweigh the negatives. Agree on the car being amazing even compared to supercars
Early and most later Lamborghini manuals had about the same gearing and no one bitched about them.

I cant fit in a lambo at 5’11”. The porsche has tons more room especially 911 but even 718
How’s the sound system? Is it worth optioning the Burmester?

R8 was boring unless you were going way too fast for the street. If i had to do it again i would have skipped it and gone for the lambo because its dialed in to feel more special at all speeds. Also im enjoying the 718 more than the turbocharged 911. My next 911 will be NA 💯

love the silver do you still own the car
No gone a long time ago unfortunately
Thanks! Gears shorten up if you plant the accelerator. Check out the bc fabs power pack video to get a better estimate.
On engernering explained he say flat shifting is not good for your transmission
I think driving like a hooligan isnt good for the transmission in general 🤣 thankfully replacing the clutch/pressure plate/master cylinder is like $5k with labor on the manual (vs $20k for a pdk replacement). What baffles me is that porsche has launch control programmed into the manual, but ive never tried it because it seems pointless and violent on a stick car
Also forgot to mention the gt3 has transmission software that allows you to no lift shift without damaging the gearbox. It pins the revs at the current position so you dont bang off the limiter
I have driven manuals all my life, and never heard of the turm flat shifting so had to do a bit of research, thank for the info👍
What a car
🙌🏻
Should’ve kept it!
I wish i could have afforded to keep it man! Great car, it drove beautifully and looked like the dog’s bollocks. Also since driving more 718s and GT3s in manual i actually think the 718 gearbox is my favorite despite the long gears
I really wish Porsche would make a Spyder with a hardtop.
Would be nice but porsche cares too much about weight
@@plife911 It doesn’t even have to be electric. It could be like the hardtop on the 918 Spyder, which would probably weigh less than the retractable top on the current 718 Spyder.
Ideally it would be a 2 piece removable hardtop, made of carbon fiber, aluminum, or magnesium, and it could be stored behind the seats.

@@plife911 What is a Full Exhaust then?
@@TWHISPERER at least headers plus opf delete pipes +/- the rear section (muffler)
@@plife911 Aahh, modifications. Not something i am into though.
Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the sale, hopefully you can find a buyer soon. Theres not alot of cars due to covid it should help move it..

Roof down its such an amazing experience. Have been doing it this month in the 30’s and 40’s Farenheit (under 10C). That said, i would still store it with the roof up because it gets wrinkled and there are two circular tabs the make spots on the top of the roof after a few weeks.
This car is nicer to look at more fun and better engine than anything 911 other than the Turbo and Turbo S of
Course … also it is more a collectable car then any carerra … FACTS
Excellent points 👍🏻
