  • In this video, I empty out the big cristata and the smaller one and try to find the best pieces to repot.

    I thought it was a single specimen :) instead you had dozen of pieces lol
    (love the basket!!)
    Well, you probably know already that Coelogyne don't like to be disturbed, there is a good chance that it will skip the flowering this year... but you never known, if the growing season is good with lots of water and fertilizer it may surprise you and us!
    For the leafless bulbs, you can experiment and see if, once you cut off the leading growth, they will sprout again! They should, in theory, there are some decent size bulbs there ;) I see the space problem, but it would be interesting to see...
    My C. creistata is an unfortunate one. It took me 3/4 years to see it flowering (and it was amazing), then I diceded to repot it in a wider pot... and because if something can go wrong it will, after a couple of months from the repotting, the pott fell and the poor plant had to bear another repotting. It's usless to say that it's been 2 years without flowering!
    This growing season I will kik it with the fertilizer and hope it will bloom.
    I treat it like my D. pierardii for what regards the winter rest. It's cold resistent when not watered, sometimes it had to bear around or less than 10 degrees. I'm not saying that it needs it, but it can take it :)
    Thanks for sharing all the process!

      Some say cristata should only be fed during Spring and Autumn when it does most of it's growing as it takes a bit of a rest mid-Summer when it's hotter. It can take some heat of kept well hydrated and has humid air. Also, it can go down to near freezing if dry. I'm hoping that my pieces will grow on a bit now in Spring but better in Autumn. Cool it down a bit this coming Winter and then repeat next year expecting blooms in the following late Winter. That's if survives of course.

    Roger, great potting and useful as I just got a cristata, nitida,massangeana & strictata.
    I love the look of the pseudobulbs.
    I would have put them all in the wooden basket.
    I settle like you.

      I'm trying not to use much moss as it defeats the object with the really long-lasting orchiata bark. But when orchids are short of roots, it help gets them going again.

      Makes sense and I am sure it will work.

    You know 2 more things about Coelogyne than I do then. I'm buying one in 2 days, so I am looking for all the info I can get. Thank you for this thorough video. By the way, a bug walked past your wine glass away from the tray, at about 10 minutes in the video.

    Great video Roger 👍🏻 I actually contacted Kevin on that website a few months back as my lawrenceana was keeling over and he was so wonderful and emailed me back with so much detail and I followed his advice and so far so good!! Keeping fingers crossed for your cristata ☺️

    Why don't you try some of the waste chunks on a tree in the garden? They can certainly take a few degrees of frost, and Ned at Tremenhere down in Cornwall is trying it in the epiphyte tree there....

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no suitable trees and for me, the risk is too high - we've been down to -10C this winter and that followed rain so every thing was frozen solid.

    Have you thought of doing some crosses and seed growing? I think you would have fun with it.Or maybe I missed that part.

      No time for seeds/seedlings - to long until blooming size and I don't really need an extra 30-40 plants to water? Not for me I'm afraid.

    Can you tell me where you buy shallow clear pots? I only ever found brown shallow pots, i would love to get some clear for my Bulbos and the likes. Thanks

      They came from "Orchid Accessories by Peter White" here in the UK : orchidaccessories.uk/catalog/product_info.php/15cm-clear-shallow-pot-p-240?osCsid=ge8cqglsoqdbldtt22fgkem8k5

    Hi Roger, just interested to know how your Coelogyne did throughout the summer? (Incidentally I heard if you disturb the roots they don’t flower for a couple or more years, hope that come February that’s proved wrong!!!)😊😊😊

    I was freaking out because I when bought a coelogyne cristata, the bulbs were shrivelling and no water what I did they wouldn't plump back up.Then I noticed some new shoots and it all made sense. Now they big a plump again.

    • @fortuneflux
      @fortuneflux 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elenicosta4672 Unfortunately shortly after t he bulbs began to shrivel again. I know coelogyne cristata hate to be repotted so I just bit the bullet and repotted in 100% charcoal so I never need to repot again. It's still not plumping up but it is sending out more new shoots.
