  • In today's video, we focus on 'COELOGYNE CRISTATA ORCHID CARE'. Following on from my Coelogyne Cristata video in February this year, when my orchid had developed browning on the underside of the leaves, I update you on the new growths and leaves and we discuss some general Coelogyne Cristata orchid care.
    I then unpot it, take a look at the roots, then pot it up again in a different container.
    Finally, we take a very brief tour around some of the new blooms right now in my tropical greenhouse.
    I hope you enjoy this video!

    Great video Geoff! I’ve never seen one quite so amazing and I’ve watched a LOT of TH-cam videos. I’m going to share it with everyone I know who grows orchids. 😳🤔😀

    I'm very happy to see 'cristata'
    I have met its white flowers in 2013(April) when I hike Himalayas.
    I didn't know its name then.

      The white one might be Coelogyne cristata alba?

    My cristata’s roots are the same. They don’t tend to put out deep roots. So a wide, shallow-ish pot is better. When it’s producing more roots, mine appear white not green. You can tell they’re dead if they’re soft not firm. They don’t like they’re roots disturbed and don’t put out a whole lot of roots. That’s my experience.

      Thanks Douglas that's really helpful. These roots weren't soft, yet when cut they appeared to be very hard - like you'd expect if they were dead! I just don't know - but I guess it's too late now anyway. I still expect it to survive and hopefully it'll put down some more. Now it's in a basket it should be a little bit easier for me to do a quick check to see if anything is happening down there. It might be another few years before I get any blooms out of the thing...😩

    Another great video Geoff 😊. I have 2 different types of Coelogyne and both of mine have brown roots. Like you, I wasn't sure which ones were alive or dead when I repotted but I basically left anything on that felt firm and anything else that wasn't... it was off with its head 😁.
    Good luck with yours. I've not got a cristata but it looks pretty healthy to me with all those lovely bulbs 😊.
    I've got the same bulb baskets as you... had them for months but I've yet to use them. I've got several orchids that I think will love them but I've yet to get round to repotting. I've still got 3 weeks off work so no excuse really... Just feeling really lazy 🤣🤣.
    Wow to all your amazing blooms. They must brighten up your day seeing them 😊.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Maxine!😃 I'm not too worried about them - if they grow on rocks then it's likely they only need the pseudobulbs to survive. Hopefully in time they'll grow new roots. If only we could do the same eh? My knees are giving me some gyp these days...Yeah the greenhouse is looking pretty good. It's especially nice to see the blooms when all about us is going into winter slumber. I wouldn't mind if we could rely on blue skies - but it's the continual dreary heavy cloud cover that lowers the spirits. Good excuse to spend more time with the plants eh?

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I'd say it's the perfect excuse 😊. Ditto on the knees and also add in hips and back too lol. We definitely need some blue skies back soon to cheer everything up! Been a lovely day here mind you but then tomorrow it will probably be snowing with hail and thunder 🤣. Happy growing and enjoy your lovely burst of colour 😊. It's a terrible shame that I'll have to add more plants to my collection to get colour in the depths of my sea of green 🤣🤣🤣

    Have you cared for any pteris? If so a care video would be great! One of the few ferns I've been able to keep happy. Probably because they're not too fussed about drying out!

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a couple of Pteris ferns - both quite different in appearance and in care needs. I've talked about them randomly in various 'greenhouse tour' style videos but not specifically - apart from one I made called 'Solving Sooty Moulds On Ferns' which was about Pteris Cretica and I think contained some care tips too. I also have a playlist on tropical ferns here: th-cam.com/play/PLQKwmNwb1T5BlcZ_qljPJpYmjA_7HggVW.html but I'll definitely add your suggestion to my list and make a specific care video over the coming months. Thanks for the suggestion Storm - very much appreciated! 😬

      Hi Sheila. I already have videos on cyclamen that cover those topics. See this playlist: th-cam.com/video/jNENY5wYrXA/w-d-xo.html If any of your questions are still unanswered then let me know! 😀

    Love your videos. I have no idea about these roots but they looked way too wet. But im not sure aha. Do u have Any Hardy Cyclamen, since u got the house/greenhouse one?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shows you can’t always believe what you see! They were actually bone dry. And no I don’t have any hardy cyclamen in the greenhouse because the conditions aren’t right for them. I do however have a few outside in the borders where they can get the seasonal variation they need. I just wish I could get a few more cultivars of cyclamen persicum, but this year they’re nowhere to be found! Probably COVID’s fault! 🤔🤷‍♂️

    You cut live roots? Was that Janet volcano sparkles?
    Can't help with cristata, do have a nitida that has brown roots. It seems much more comfortable since the temps dropped, 30+ days of 32c this summer did it no good.
    Lovely blooms everywhere you turned :)

      Yeah I know - shame on me! They were 'doing my 'ed in' as they say. I wanted to get it into that clay pot so it wouldn't keep falling over. It's so vigorous it'll likely respond with more bloom spikes...It's funny how the grass is always greener. I'd give anything for blue skies. Maybe not at 32°C but the short dark days with constant heavy cloud cover we get over here really saps the spirits. Lockdown doesn't help either, of course!😩

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 Oh, it's not all blue skies here and the humidity in summer can drop the unwary. In Jan-Feb we only get 11-14% of available daylight so I know the feeling well. My state is heading back into various levels of lock down, a bit too late I think.
      I bet Janet will fill the space between the pots in retaliation ;) Ha, I do know "do me ed in" , spent many summers working in the family greenhouse biz with my English great aunts. And I have a tricky re pot of a thumping big zygo to get on with, can't decide if it will stay as 1 plant or divvy it up and send part out to the greenhouse.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 The Aunties had a 5 acre complex of pit houses to play in:) Two of the greenhouses were for rose hybridizing & the seedlings, there were many for cut flower production, two retail sales, one a florist shop the other for annuals and houseplants.I had quite an education before I went off to school to get those pieces of paper that said I knew what I was doing. Worked in the trade for many years then went back to teach. Now, at home, I just have 6.5x18ft, off the back of our house. I've contemplated starting a channel, not sure what direction it would need to go in.I can do science geek really well ;)

      @@lorapoynter9162 Wow that's quite a horticultural background! You definitely should start a channel - I'd watch it. Of course, it's a big commitment but if you enjoy it then it's not really like work. If you do decide to go for it, then be sure to let me know. For my own part, I wish I'd been able to do something with plants but my own life took a different path, alas. 5 years in a bank, followed by 20 years teaching at primary level, followed by 10 years with a gardening business and a private tuition company - nothing grand, but enough to be my own boss. I'm not sure I'd have done anything different as I have so many interests I still don't know which I'd choose if I had to do it all again. Still, I think my days of maintaining other folk's gardens are somewhat numbered. I'm still doing 25 a week, as my knees can attest to!
