  • This week Plant Lovers another Coelogyne mysteriously turned up in the post .... !!! So I thought why not share how I'll go about potting up this division of a mature specimen of Coelogyne asperata. In this video we'll talk a little about the history of this plant, what it's ideal growing conditions are, and how I'm going to pot it up knowing that I'm about to move in a year or so!!
    I have created a Coelogyne care playlist which you can see here: • COELOGYNE ORCHID CARE
    And if you're in Australia I bought this orchid from these guys who are a species orchid specialist (If you are outside of Australia they unfortunately can't ship.): darkstarorchids.com.au/our-or...

    I’m glad that you decided to share your potting of this new orchid. Your videos are always fun and interesting; I smiled many times during this one! I think that being well-read and having excellent language skills put your channel in a league of its own. Also, your media preparation and mixing would make a great ASMR channel. ;)

    Thanks for this I've had trouble with this type of orchid ,I'm in Tasmania, lower slopes of Mt Wellington so at the moment cold and damp,I shall now keep going with confidence.🥰👍

    Hi again, as always I enjoyed your video thank you. Just a word about using shells. To be useful for adding calcium they say to use them crushed, like the crushed oyster shell grit you can buy for birds but don't use it on plants that usually grow in moss and like acid conditions. I killed a Paph. delenatii like this yet the paphs that grow on limestone loved it 🤷‍♀️

    Another great video Matthew, love it! I feel like it just puts me in a great mood for the weekend. Very interested in this plant, the flowers look lovely and the leaves too. Keep us up to date on the progress! by the way how many orchids do you have? Do you keep a list?

      Thank you! And....Well....funnily enough...I am in the midst of making a Google Sheets inventory particularly to make sure I don't double up in the heat of the moment and to record details of what is working outside and rest periods or not etc....so...no answer at this point! I am determined to make more head way on it this weekend. I'm up to 48 so far....but still a long way to go!

      @@helloplantlovers Oh that's funny, it's exactly what I did too! Great way to keep track of all plants, where you got them from, when they were repotted and when they flowered. I ended up moving to a phone app called Memento Database after a while (easier to add photos). Super useful
      Anyway have fun with the inventory! I'm going to bet on 162 as the final number ;)

    Matthew those pots are fabulous. There is a bit of a shortage of terracotta pots these days. Thick ones like that are completely unseen in the states. Pots with holes like that...never. Good call to get all you can. They'll age well. An orchid expert in the states did tell me terracotta will put more minerals into the orchids and may therefore require a flush with something like epsom salts occasionally. Any confirmation you can get on this.

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aren't they! I think it depends upon the pot and it's firing. Some of mine you can see do leach salts from the body but I feel that the watering will wash that out to a degree. I've been using terracotta for years and think MANY things have killed or upset my orchids....mostly ME....but not the pot salts.

    On the subject of holes in terracotta pots my husband kindly drills holes for me. The handmade pots are best but there are some factory made ones that are a nightmare so I wait till I see them on sale and buy what I can.

    Hi Matthew, nice potting video! the Latin name of this orchid is a mystery. I looked up bloom pictures online and noticed that the lip seems to have bumpy protrusions on it. Maybe the rough refers to the flower lip? Also, how’s your Victoria reginae doing? Is your verdict more sun or less sun?

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching....I think I need to get a definitive latin name dictionary! Perhaps when it flowers all will be clear? And thank you for asking about Victoria reginae! It's winter now so it seems very happy in it's new spot; bright indirect light. Great new growths and no sun damage so the verdict is: yes to stronger light!
