Spray alcohol directly on them. You can also put in half 70% alcohol and half water, 1/2 teaspoon of dawn dish detergent, and about 10 drops of lemon grass oil in a spray bottle. This will kill any kind of pest that you have. You can spray that directly on them the scale and it kills them on contact. If you omit the dish detergent, you don't even have to rinse it off, or you could just use a couple of drops of dish detergent. This works for me. I got rid of thripes this last spring, like that.
Love your repots. I really needed this, as I bought one that is in some sort of soil. It doesnt look too happy, but its nearly Springtime and I dont think I can repot at this stage, as it does have a few nubbins.
scale is awful on the black hair types. My Frosty Dawn has been dealing with it for 3 years and I think it finally gave up. It produced a keiki, which I have removed, and I tossed the mother plant along with the scale on it. Hopefully I can keep the keiki scale free and have a nice plant again.
These types don't spread across the pot like some do (Oncidiums) and due to my lower temps in Winter, they need to stay quite dry. Larger pots stay wet too long and rot the roots.
Hi Roger, I have a plant that looks very similar to your pop up- and gets to about the same height as the one you show. I know there are a lot of look-alikes, but still. Den. sanderae v. luzonicum x sib var. major is how the one I have is labeled. Maybe this helps.
The Dendrobium genus is huge so is divided into 'sections' like Spatulata (Antelope type), Latoria, and Formosae - which is subtitled "nigrohirsutae type" - I'm not prepared to use that expression so I use the translation of 'Black-hair' type. The new canes are covered in tiny black hairs.
Curious Roger what bark do you use & does it matter as long as the plant is tight into the pot? I just use the standard commercial orchid mix is that good or bad? I've just replanted my dendrobium orchid and removed the keiki but not confident about growing the keikis just didn't want it taking much out of my adult plant as it's coming into its growth spell.
Most orchids that we grow are epiphytes and need plenty of air around their roots but they still need to feel 'secure' and not flop around in the pot. The bark I'm using at the moment comes from Orchid Accessories but I I also use the stuff sold by Burnhams Nursery. (I don't buy Orchiata bark any more.)
@GrowingOrchidswithRoger thanks for the reply. I found that my orchid on repot naturally split into 2 parts once I had separated the roots (not cut them) just separated them. This is why I ask what bark you use. I guess only time will tell how they get on but I've talen a lot from your channel Most of it is common sense really as you yourself say I think but your videos teach us novices a lot so thank you again. 🙏🙏😃
Always enjoy your commentary when you do repots, there are so many little gems of info that you include, which makes each one unique. Thanks!
Thanks- and you're welcome.
Thanks Roger. You always fill your repot videos with useful information. Much appreciated.
You're welcome.
Thank you Roger. Always learn something watching you repot.
You're welcome.
Its dendrobium formidable i believe. I've been wanting one for a really long time!
Could be. The grower I got this from certainly had that one but it came to me with no ID.

I have a lot of mundane to do, not really feeling it today 🤣
You could get a lightbulb plug for your light fixture so you can keep the door shut all of the way.
You can't run a heating unit on a 5A circuit.
Great information
Thanks.
Nice job good not to have too much to do again.
I still have some repotting to do - but apart from one or two, nothing urgent.

14:29 why didn't you remove the dead cane under your thumb? 💞🌞🌵😷
Hello,
Where do you buy your medium bark from?
Hope you are well!
I got mine from Orchid Accessories : orchidaccessories.uk/catalog/product_info.php/portuguese-orchid-repotting-bark-medium-grade-15mm-15lt-bag-p-385

I lost most of my Tolumnias to scale.
Why didn't you allow for room for next year's new growth in a bigger pot or do you repot every year? 💞🌞🌵😷

Hello Roger, do you have a video where you talk in details about the hotbox, how to make it, what chemical are you using...?
This is the vid where I did a sort of demo and explained how it works : th-cam.com/video/YujHTf5iNLQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks Roger.
You're welcome.
Never heard of black hair types… can you explain?
