Hi Geoff, I don't have C Cristata but I do have plants that had spotting and browning on leaves and bulbs. Some I attribute to bugs. I don't have access to much in a fungicide so I have not used that. Seems like people think that is what you should use. Please keep us updated on the results. Regarding the shallow basket, I bought a shallow bowl shaped basket at the dollar store. It is a fine mesh all over. I have my encyclia radiata in it. Perhaps you could try a similar store or kitchen supply store. I think it would be great for your plant. Nice job on the greenhouse. Just a thought on my part but if you had a small door then you would have more wallspace to hang plants plus I think it would be easier/cheaper to keep the warm side warm. You now you are gonna need more wall space. My two cents worth . Have a great evening/night.

Thanks - yeah it looks like I'm going to have to try something like you've got - as I just can't find a shallow net basket meant for plants anywhere. And re the Coelogyne - I've sprayed it with both insecticide and with fungicide so I'll keep you updated as to its progress. The door issue has now been solved - which you'll see in 2 videos' time. Thanks for watching! :)

Excellent! I've got high hopes for mine this year as it's put on quite a lot of new growth - without any brown markings this time! 😁

You could just fill the bottom half of the pot with packing peanuts to mimic a more shallow pot. Definitely looks fungal. Staying too moist too long.

That's a great idea! I don't have any packing peanuts but I'm sure I can find something similar. Shallow net pots seem to be as rare as unicorns!

My first reaction is to say spider mites, but the markings on the pseudobulbs send out alarm bells. I have a Miltassia that has suffered from spider mites, and the leaves are exactly the same. You can't always see the mites, so I would wipe with rubbing alcohol and see if the telltale sign of red comes off. Greenhouse looking good Geoff.

Thanks Margaret. I'm pretty sure I can rule spider mites out - I had a huge infestation of them on my Brugmansia and Banana plants last year so I know what to look for. After doing a bit of Googling I found something that said they can sometimes get brown stripes underneath the leaves - so whether that's it? Without a photo to check it against it's hard to tell. The leaves feel very smooth - but I'll try your suggestion and give one a wipe to see what happens. :)

put them in a basket not in a pot and keep it dryer. Water just once a week max. and no water over the bulbs.

Yes I agree it would be better off in a shallower pot - I'll get one ordered from somewhere. :)

Morning Goeff just catching up in some videos, I would say its some sort of fungal/bacterial infection but I'm no expert, but I would certainly treat it with a fungicide to be on the safe side, I find that mine grew a lot better in a shallower basket to allow more air around the roots since then it has flowered every year, Good video by the way.

Hi Mick - thanks for the tips. I've been looking for a shallow net basket but can't find any - they all seem to be as deep as this one. There must be some for sale somewhere - but I can't find them as yet. I hit the Coelogyne with both a systemic insecticide and a fungicide yesterday - so hopefully that will help!

Hi Geoff re your cristata, looks like a fungal infection. I have had similar on coelogynes and successfully treated them with systemic fungicide. I grow my cristata in an ordinary hanging basket lined with mesh (greenhouse shading) which is shallow enough and allows it to dry out. Hope that is useful. Angela

Thanks Angela that's very useful. I've sprayed it with systemic insecticide so tomorrow I'll try the fungicide too. I also could do with finding a shallow net basket but so far I can't find any, so if you've any suggestions I'm all ears. Thanks for your tips!

Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees I have no problem with ordinary hanging baskets just like the ones found in garden centres. Lined with mesh to stop the media falling through the holes they work very well for my cristata and C. flaccida Otherwise a largish pond basket which can be hung with wire would work.

Hi Jeff, I had the same problem 2 years ago with my Miltassia Shelob Tolkien. I sprayed it with a fugicide, which has solved the problem. All the new growths came up fine, no marks on them. But the marks stayed on the infected growths. Hope that this is helpful to you.

Thanks Martin that's worth knowing. I might try the 'throw the kitchen sink at it' approach and spray with fungicide and insecticide! :)

Maybe ask Roger, he'd know I'm sure. That's too cool grower for me, but yeah I was thinking that pot was really deep for the plant. That Coelogyne is one of my faves.

Thanks Todd. I’ve asked Roger if he’d take a look but I realise he must get many requests and won’t be able to fit them all in.

Thanks Terry - I've decided to just hit it with insecticide and then fungicide and hope for the best! :)
