  • My version of Coelogyne cristata just doesn't look like some others and doesn't seem to behave the same either. I need to change 'something' as I'd like to see some blooms early next year.
    As always, thanks for watching.

    I’m in Sydney Australia, we had a very wet winter with temperatures as low as 3-4 deg. So it got lots of water and good dose of winter sun.
    About a week before official spring had a beautiful spray of blooms 😎
    I can’t attach an image here but the flower is white with yellow lip
    The bulbs are nice and plump and I would say the same colour as yours

    Hi Roger! From the information I`ve gathered there are two forms yes. One has short rhizomes and small round shaped pseudobulbs, yellow in color and is more" difficult to flower" The other has longer rhizomes, has lager egg shaped pseudobulbs and is apparently "easier to flower"
    Idont own any Coelogynes thoug. So have no real experience in growing them. Sorry if grammar and spelling is a bit of...English is not my official language :p thanks for sharing!

      Thanks and no-one needs to apologise for their English here - all are welcome.

    Whatever you do "don't put all your eggs in one basket" and then chuck them out into the frost! (Just trying to be funny as I can be of no help really lol) Love all the short and round bulb Cologynes, adorable and sophisticated at the same time. Hoping you play the "game" well and get some blooms from this one!

    Thanks Roger. Not sure which "variety" mine is. But it survived the rot it had a year or so ago and now has three new plump pseudobulbs as well as the three survivors. Fingers crossed.....

    For info - My cristata (alba) started pushing up flower spikes - it looks like that's what your growth is - in the beginning of November and they're now around 2" long. I've kept watering, but on a reduced regime (weekly rather than daily) while temperatures have dropped to minimum of 9 C overnight. All my new growths from the summer are plumpish like yours.

    Dear Roger, few of my friends have these orchids (I guess high land variety) growing pretty much wild (hardly any care) in their gardens in Kumaon (India) at the elevation of 5500ft (1300m-1400m). Our Winters are very dry indeed, it rains only once a month and goes rather cold at night (down to zero) from mid December to mid January. Orchids usually bloom in last week of February- first week of March. After flowering they just wait for monsoons (plenty of warm rain and high humidity from mid June to mid September) to start actively growing. Hope this helps to get your plant to bloom. Good Luck!

    Hi Roger. I have two Cologne Crista and they too have had shrivelled pseudobulbs and fat pseudobulbs and leaves that grow and then die off but no hint of a bloom. I have tried different media, water, no water, increased humidity but all to no avail. No blooms. A lot of work for no return. I am thinking that they need to go under the hedge. I could put them by a window in hopes that might allow for some more cooling effect but then my plant room has big floor to ceiling windows and when it is sunny, even though the room faces east, it gets warm in there. I use the window shades in summer to filter the sun. So I am going to follow you on this orchid and see what you do that will bring it into bloom. The pictures of the blooms are very striking but very elusive for me. Thanks for another great vid.

      My first thing will be to move it to a place with more light and this Winter, it's getting very little water.

    Mine is very similar looking to yours with fat bulbs and deep green colour. Alas though no blooms as yet. I did water through winter though.

    I think your right I've got the shrivelled type. One half I mounted the other in a shallow terracotta pot. Neither is thriving, not quite sure where I!m going with their care. ( ps bought from Burnhams over 15 years ago) I think I'm one of those never give up types. I've just dug up the hedge so that's not an option. I'd be so impressed if they looked as healthy as yours.

    According to what I have read, it needs a drastic increase in light in the winter, as much as the plant can take without burning, to induce blooming. So, maybe it needs to move off that lower shelf?

      Worth a go - but then 'where' exactly can it go? Maybe when the shade netting comes off soon, that will be enough.

    I have a Coelogyne flaccida, does it have to go dry over winter? When do you start watering again?

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one comes from higher altitudes so would be a cooler grower year round with a drop in Winter. Also, it would be drier in Winter with brighter light but shouldn't stay totally dry for long. Watering should be increase when the warmer weather starts and new growths appear in Spring.

    Cattleya maxima? Two forms of that upland & highland forms.
    Yeah haven't seen that Coelogyne in some time of yours... It's sure grown!

      That's the one. I've always been able to grow this but not bloom it well. I'm trying dry and cool this Winter.

    Do you know where the lemoniana variety comes from? Where as the normal form can usually be found across the range of a species, different varieties of a species sometimes have very defined area within that range. For instance, your Laelia purpurata comes from the southern part of its species range and blooms later then the normal form. My first Coelogyne cristata was like yours, I had it on a east window in full sun and the leaves only started yellowing when they were old and getting ready to fall off. To me, it sounds like it's not getting enough light. Good luck. Thanks for sharing

      Can't find any distribution info on the variety lemoniana specifically, but where it comes from, it does get quite cold in Winter.

    Hi Roger. I am so glad for this video. My Coelogyne cristata started two new growths in September. I persume that I have to go on with watering and fertilizing. It is still out , night temps are 8 to 10 C, lot of rain and humidity. My dilema is if it would be better to put it inside to higher temps because of the new growths or not? I would like to have your opinion. Thanks

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are Northern hemisphere, it should be heading into to Winter so it needs to dry so I would get it out of the rain for a start. It needs to be cool, quite dry and bright for Winter. Depending on the size of the plant, there should be enough stored energy to keep the 2 new growths going.

    You mean cattleya maxima. I accidently got myself the "upland" variety. Thus, it died due to my hot environment. 😓

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the one. The upland variety is more attractive and a more compact plant - but it does need to stay cooler.
