  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Hyundai IONIQ 6 electric sedan review. 2023 World Car Awards: IONIQ 6 wins World Car of the Year, World Electric and Vehicle and World Car Design of the year.
Hyundai’s goal is to create unique EV’s, each one to be different from the next having their own look and design. The IONIQ 6 is sleek with a low nose, active air flaps, an elliptical wing inspired spoiler, a new Hyundai H emblem design in the front and rear, flushed door handles, 18” or 20” black wheels and more than 700 parametric pixels found throughout the vehicle. The IONIQ 6 has a low drag coefficient of 0.22, the lowest for a Hyundai model and it offers 5.6” of ground clearance.
The Interior of the IONIQ 6 is spacious with plenty of legroom and a flat floor in the rear. It comes standard with dual 12.3” screens under one piece of glass. The cabin feels open and comfortable with a few interior colour options including standard black cloth and black or grey leatherette upholstery.
This electric sedan has a 77.4 kWh battery with RWD models getting up to 581 km/361 miles of range. AWD models up to 509 km/316 miles and with larger 20” wheels, a little less 435 km/270 miles.
AWD models have a 74 kW front electric motor and 165 kW in the rear. RWD models 168 kW rear electric motor.
RWD models have 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and AWD 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque.
In the US, there is also a base standard range RWD model coming this summer. It has 149 horsepower and up to 240 miles of range.
In Canada, the Preferred RWD LR model is $54,999 CAD, Preferred AWD LR $57,999 CAD and Preferred AWD LR with the Ultimate Package $63,999 CAD
In the US, RWD SE SR $41,600 USD, SE LR $45,500 USD, SEL LR $47,700 USD
and Limited LR $52,600 USD. AWD SE LR $49,000 USD, SEL LR $51,200 USD and Limited LR $56,100 USD.
We are driving the Hyundai IONIQ 6 AWD Long Range model with the Ultimate package. This Canadian top trim is priced at $63,999 CAD. It is equivalent to the US AWD Limited LR model for $56,100 USD.
This model with the larger 20” wheels gets up to 435 km/270 miles of range and has a 74 kW front electric motor and 165 kW in the rear. It has 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque.
The IONIQ 6 comes standard with a heat pump and battery heating system, dual 12.3” screens, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, stain resistant cloth seats, a power driver seat and manual passenger seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and 18” wheels. Add the Ultimate package in Canada to get the sunroof, a power passenger seat with lumbar support, leatherette, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, heated rear seats, a head-up display, Bose sound system, surround view monitor and blind view monitor.
In the US, one up from the base model IONIQ 6 adds a wireless charger and leatherette upholstery. The top trim has the same features that are in the Canadian Ultimate package with the addition of the heated steering wheel, it is not standard on the base model in the US.
The IONIQ 6 can support both a 400 volt and 800 volt charging infrastructure. With a 350 kW charger, the IONIQ 6 can charge from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes. It can also recoup approximately 100 km/65 miles in 5 minutes with a DC fast charger. The standard 10.9 kW on-board charger completes a full charge with a Level 2 charger in just over 7 hours. There is also an available vehicle to load function.
US buyers will receive two years of 30-minute complimentary charging sessions at Electrify America.
The IONIQ 6 qualifies for the Federal EV rebate in Canada of $5,000 and rebates in participating provinces. This electric vehicle does not qualify for a tax credit in the US.

Nice to see a car with unique styling. So many vehicles are so generic these days. Also, I'm a much bigger fan of sedans over crossovers or SUVs, so I'm glad to see more electric sedans. Don't get why so many companies ignore the vehicle type with the least wind resistance and best drag coefficient when they're designing efficient vehicles. So many big and clunky EVs.

They also need to cool it with bigger and bigger tires. What's the point? Smaller, not small, smaller than the too big tires that are on the vehicles now, give better range. Isn't that the point? They also ride better most of the time.

10 years ago, Sedans were half the car market, now days, only 1 in 5 new auto sales is a Sedan.
Manufacturers make what the public wants. In general, people don't want Sedans so Manufacturers don't make them. Yes, some people love them, but they are now a tiny minority.

I just bought the ioniq 6 white limited last Sunday in FL. I fell in love with it the minute I saw it. Was excited when the 5 came out, but didn't like it. Maybe more people want Suv or crossover, but that doesn't mean that others don't like a sedan. It is like a pair of jeans. There should not be just one choice. I think the 6 is sporty and elegant at the same time. I love the all in one dash!

The solution to the instrument panel position is a heads up display. My RAV4 has one. Thought it was a gimmick when it came with the package, but I find the instrument cluster cluttered with lots of stuff I don’t need to drive. The HUD shows speed, cruise control setting, RPM (not very detailed) and when a turn is coming up when the navigation is being used. Almost never need to look at the full cluster.

agree with your comments about not being able to see stuff on the DIC behind the wheel. I have an EV6 and it has the same screen layout--its one of my only major complaints about the car. They don't seem to have figured out the placement of things on that screen. Literally, the mph, and miles remaining, as well as all the indicators for what safety/assist features are on or off, are all hidden behind the steering wheel.

This car is really growing on me. It is interesting to see they left those wings on both sides of the dash for our market. They are actually the digital sideview mirrors in other markets. We also don't get the rear LED fogs that are in the red stips above the reverse lamps, or the amber rear signals. We also get the amber DRL's instead of the nice white ones in other markets. We also don't get the matrix headlamps like other markets. Oh Canada... the land of feature removed vehicles. Great review as always :-)

Just a general plug in electric car question, I'm wondering; does listening to loud music while driving an electric car, effect range greatly? Or the heat or a/c blasting? When you consider a 1-3 thousand you'll spend on gas per year, spend like 20k less on the car, and given that electricity isn't free, seeing that no EV or PHEV will actually save money, not for now at least, don't sweat having chosen one last hurrah for a gas car. Plus the fact that the Rogue does best among all gas equivalents. So yeah, not a bad choice at all.

    • @Slayyyter_bitxh
      @Slayyyter_bitxh ปีที่แล้ว

@Antiorganizer I spend around 250$ a year on charging my ev so I'm saving a shit ton compared to my old car

    • @Antiorganizer
      @Antiorganizer ปีที่แล้ว

@@Slayyyter_bitxh A RAV4 Prime uses about 36 kWh per 100 miles. If one drives 10k miles per year, that's 3600 kWh. If 1 kWh costs 21 cents, then 3600 kWh costs about $750.
A RAV4 regular uses about 30 miles per gallon. 10k driving uses about 333 gallons.
      1 gallon costs about $3.60.
So that's $1,200 of gasoline per year.
Thus, the Prime saves about $450 per year.
If the Prime in reality costs $15k more to obtain, then it would take 33 years to break even.
I think the problems is that many EV owners have enough disposable income to not really care about the details, and want to feel really good about their choice and don't really actually realize what it actually costs.
They just figure, "meh I'm not seeing the electric bill change a heck of a whole lot, so, meh, probably 250 per year give or take". And that's just a wild guess and not a correct one at that.
When doing the real actual math on it, not one single EV or hybrid or plugin hybrid will actually "save" money, when their markup is that high.
Now, it *is* possible to come out ahead, when driving something non-SUV and something frugal like a Corolla hybrid or Prius or Ioniq 4 (not 5) *AND* if driving a *LOT*.
But for the regular schmo doing normal basic driving, forget it. The premium is not cost advantageous.
I've done this math countless of times.

@Antiorganizer I drive around 13k miles a year in my kona ev and it costs me 7.92$ to recharge which I did about 4 times a month meaning I paid 380$ last year to fuel my car compared to my partners 19mpg car that costs 80$ every fill up which was around three times a month and over last year cost me around 2,700$ so it's saved a lot of money

    • @Antiorganizer
      @Antiorganizer ปีที่แล้ว

@@Slayyyter_bitxh A Kona EV uses about 27 kWh per 100 miles.
13k miles would use 3,510 kWh.
At 21 cents per kWh, that's $737.10 per year.
A different vehicle, a gasoline one, that has a fuel economy of 19 mpg, would use 684 gallons of fuel per year. At $3.60 per gallon that would be $2,463 per year.
The Kona costs $1,726 less for energy use per year.
If the Kona EV costs $10k more to purchase, then it would take 5 3/4 years to break even on cost.
I don't know what car you're comparing to, but that's obviously apples and oranges.
I know that for less money, one can have a much nicer SUV, which is bigger, with nicer features like a panoramic sunroof, that does 30 mpg. The Rogue SV delivers that.
At 30 mpg, the savings aren't $1,726, but about $833 per year.
If the Kona EV costs, say $8k more, then it would take close to 10 years of driving to break even.
I tell you, people that take the plunge on these expensive EVs and plug in hybrids, they don't really actually to the math. They assume they made the smartest choice.
Sure it does drive nicer. I might be quicker to accelerate. Better throttle resonse.
But an actual money saver, they're not!
I'd love to drive an EV too, but the extra cost of it, takes away from its attractiveness.
Some time will need to go by before an EV becomes the cheaper option. Right now, it just is not.

Choice is good. Not everyone wants a crossover. I want to see less crossovers and more sedans and hatchbacks. I want to see cars with 17 to 18 inch wheels as well. Also, hate to be a spoil sport but I'm tired of reviewers going whoo whoo when accelerating in BEVs. The bulk of them driven on the roads rarely tap into the power because it lowers range.
I'm not totally convinced on the styling of the car. I also prefer the Prius, if you have to do two screens. Adding more dimension by separating the console functions with the dash display makes for better clarity and recognition.

The rear of this Hyundai reminds me of that old Infiniti J30 sedan from the early 90’s. It’s the droopy butt and rear tail lights that seem to have been inspired by it.

I went to see one of these earlier this week. I loved it! BTW here in the Dallas area I did a search for Ioniq 5 and there were 66 new or certified and 14 Ioniq 6s. I think the shortage is virtually over. I am leaning towards the base version with the 361 miles range. My wish list for changes is that the 20" rims were a stand alone option. I do not want them.

I’ve got a serious question. Why are Canadian EV drivers getting ripped off by the charging networks? They price for energy delivered in kw/h in the USA but here we get charged for the time on the plug not the energy delivered. So there’s no incentive for these companies to give the fast charging of 350 kw. Should there be regulations for these charging networks?

This channel just keeps getting better! Great job again folks. As for the sedan, I think it is sorta growing on me. I would definitely take this over a Model 3 and that's not even choice to me. I've been in a few Tesla's now and I do not like their interiors or lack thereof, their minimalistic design aka we are too cheap too put buttons in our cars. Model 3 is extremely poorly built and even the newest ones dont impress ne. I seen this design originally and laughed, but, and this is a testament to how muck I dislike the Model 3, even though I'm not a huge fan of the Ioniq design, at least it has character and I would gladly have it in my driveway over a Model 3. The interior is on another level from the Model 3 and that is what you see 99% of time, and by that alone it wins. There is also something else to consider: Tesla service is abysmal especially here in Canada. Hyundai may not be the pinnacle service either but they are far better at taking care of their customers than Tesla. I base this on friends and family with Tesla and Hyundai as I watch closely while choosing our first EV.

I saw and test drove this car a couple of weeks ago. It's actually better looking than I thought. It's a hard choice between this and the ioniq 5. I do believe pricing it the same as the 5 was a bad idea though. People right now want SUVs. The only reason why they would get a sedan is because it's cheaper in general. No one is going to buy this if they could just get the ioniq 5 for the same price. This car should be around $6K less or so from the ioniq 5 so that people would really think if they need an SUV or not.

I do not like the shape of the car, but I do like some of the other aspects of the styling. The silhouette reminds me of the older Infiniti J30, or even some funny-shaped cars I used to see in Greece when I was a little kid. They were called Attica and had one wheel in the back and 2 in front... I think it's a shame they changed the style of the Ioniq 5 so much. That is a sharp-looking design and I always look twice when I see one.

Its sad that we over emphasis design (style) rather than engineering. Thanks for this review it really helps. I would like to hear about reliability and life expectancy. Can this vehicle be disabled remotely by others? This is something we should think about, when it may become necessary to control the movement of people, it would be easily done. This is my fear of buying an EVs or really any new car, I love my 2018 GTI thanks to you guys. Perhaps people should not be buying SUVs and expect to drive on a freeway unimpeded.

I test drove one this week and although it drives extremely well, I just wasn’t attracted to the way it looks. It seems somewhat over styled and I wonder how well it will age. It is also very long and I wish it was a little more compact to make it easier to park and fit into a garage. The crazy rear leg room is totally unnecessary and they could have easily trimmed 6 inches off the length. The Ioniq 5 seems to best this both in looks and practicality while being cheaper. Not sure how successful this will be in taking sales from the model 3 unless someone just wants something different since there are so many M3s on the roads. I really wanted to like this more!
