Andrea you always dress to impress. I love how you color coordinate with the car being tested and that colour match is 🔥. It’s something I look out for in each review.
Great review! I have to mention from the FL5 Nurburgring record judgment by many others: I don't understand the animosity of the few people who say it's cheating. And here's why: For reference, the record set before the FL5 was by the "Renault Megane RS Trophy R" and no one cared when that one “wasn’t stock” and released in limited numbers (about 500) for homologation purposes (If you could call it that). Basically to say: "We released this version to the public, so the record stands". Meanwhile, Honda comes out with the FL5 Type R “S” (also releases it in limited quantities to the public) and everyone calls it cheating… As far as I’m concerned, Renault started with the “not stock” record. And making the Type R "S" version the stock Type R (as in: the one sold as the ONLY Civic Type R available) would be too bare bones for most buyers to bare with no comfort for the normal road. As it is a race car version with many items/functions of comfort stripped and a different gearing that is not suitable for street driving. It's kind of like a double-edged sword: damned if you do, damned if you don't. Not to mention, lots of FL5 owners are switching to the Integra Type S's ADS because they find the ride to be too stiff. So the FL5 broke the record. But I still see people calling it cheating. It makes no sense.
Shopped the entire segment and happy to say I am the proud owner of a Championship White FL5 (purchased under MSRP). The Type R was simply head and shoulders above all the others you mentioned from a driving experience perspective. The steering, suspension, driving position, seats, as well as the most gloriously silky 6 speed transmissions available on any car at any price made my decision pretty simple. Nevertheless, all of these cars have their own personality, quirks and some even offer more utility and creature comforts (Golf R comes to mind). All represent solid bang for the buck. The FL5 will never be the fastest car on the planet but it handled the best out of all of these options. Golf R is a nice car but I felt it was busy trying to be everything to everyone being a good all 'rounder . I simply found that it didn't really do anything "special" in my eyes that made it stick out. Great car if you need AWD and want heated seats. Hyundai to me is another car that punches above its weight class but really isn't a hot-hatch IMO. It is a def a car worth driving but still needs more work in the driving experience department(and is not the best looking car either). Acura is an up-market FL5 with ugly tacked on rear fender flares and a better exhaust note. Didn't think it was worth the premium for my application. The GR Corolla was a no almost immediately given the after-thought tacked on rear fenders and awful driving position. The cheapest looking interior out of all of these cars. I understand just like music, cars and the experiences they elicit are subjective but there is something special about the JDM built Type R. Time for some more coffee !

Funny thing: when the first Integra model came out, I bought an '89 because they advertised it as a sports car, had the engine born of racing and a sports tuned suspension. Type R all day every day. Dedicated drivers car. Japanese reliability and longevity.Outstanding 6 speed manual transmission. The best seats in the business. Huge cargo carrying capacity which becomes enormous when rear seats are folded down. Menacing wide stance. Ridiculous cornering capability and grip levels. This car will destroy all its competition in the same price bracket including the awd competitors. The fact that it is so fast from point to point with only front wheel drive is a testament to the phenomenal engineering. Once that golf R is out of warranty and starts costing you a fortune the civic will only be just broken in. I have watched and read hundreds of reviews on the type r and it’s competition and nearly every single reviewer with any credibility gives the win to the type R
As far as some of the cheap outs on the interior, in Europe and Japan, the Type R does get alcantara upholstery for the rear seats. It also gets the alcantara steering wheel as standard (which is a USD $400-plus option in the US). Those models also get an alcantara shift boot instead of the cheap looking fake leather in the North American versions. As for the lack of a third seat in the rear, Honda claims it’s due to weight limitations of the Type R (and Type S) suspension, which is only rated to carry four 170-something pound adults. As far as ride quality between the Type R and the Type S, a lot of Type R owners are buying the suspension control module from the Type S and swapping it into the Type R. The part is around $200 USD and the swap is fairly easy, just plug and play.
My son and i are with Andrea, Integra Type S all day long, point of buying this type of car is for stick shift. You are buying for reliability when you rev the crap out of it. Yet another great review and entertaining video, you are the best at what you do! Type R has just enough torque to get the kiddies to school on time when they purposely miss the bus ;-) Go turbo dad, my daughter always says. We have a 2011 Subaru Forester XT, not 310 feet torque, thank goodness.
I’m super glad Honda makes this rocket. I’m so impressed with each variant over the years. If this car car is your ‘Thing’, and … you are that kinda guy (or girl)… it is certainly hard to top. But for literally everyone else? Just get the Acura. You cannot go wrong. PLUS… it’ll leave less VW Golf Rs (the proper answer) around on the motorways … besides me and Zack. Thanks for the video.
I bought a Type R 2 1/2 months ago for MSRP $46,350. The Golf R’s are currently selling for $48-49k and some in the low 50’s in the New England area. I prefer the interior of the Type R to the Golf R and sunroofs are not important to me. The comfort of the Type R front seats are exceptional.
As much as I like Hondas (I own one currently), I'd rather have a Golf R over this. The Golf is better looking, has AWD, available dual clutch automatic, and fantastic dynamic suspension (no dumb-looking wing either).
Great video. I’m with Andrea - Type S. But I would miss the better Type R seats and the shift lights. And what’s with no a/c or connectivity in the back for a premium car?
I can't imagine spending this much on a front wheel drive with a dumb looking wing. This generation is much improved, looks-wise. The last one was hideous looking at the back.
I have the Performance Red Type S and I absolutely love it. The head-up-display wasn't anything I was excited for because I've never had one so I didn't know if I would care for it or not. Turns out that I absolutely love it and am glancing at it the whole drive. I wouldn't mind it if it were a little higher up, though. I would have bout the Type-R in April 2023 but the dealer was demanding an outrageous $15,000 markup. That's extortion. I would never in a million years pay that. The Acura dealer told me that they never charge a markup. I would give different reasons for why a Type-R is better than a Type S. Number one would be the front seats and number two would be the material around where the shifter is located. I really don't like the piano black and the material in the Type-R seems so much nicer. I think that they should have made the area around the shifter and cup holder with the same material as what they have along the dash. That piano black just looks so out of place and full of fingerprints.
I had a 2022 sport touring hatch. I really miss that car! I had to sell it because one of my dogs is really sick. If I bought another car, I would definitely look at this one first! Well not this one, but the sport touring hatch CVT! 😂
The CTR is the way to go. Looking at price, which just can't be ignored, the ITS comes too close to the TL Type S, so the CTR wins for a more purposeful hot hatch.
Type R anytime. I have had the FK2, the FK8 and now the FL5 in championship white. There are quite a bit differences between the USA model and the European model. Those differences are chosen by the import companies, not Honda itself. The European model has black alcantara backseats and an alcantara steering wheel. Another difference is the EU model has black tinted windows at the back and backside. The USA model has the Bose system, the EU model has the standard sound system. I don't care the standard sound system because the quality is overruled by the road noise anyway. The EU model has 329 HP and in reality some 15 more because of the 98 and even 103 octane gasoline we have here. You mentioned the automatic transmission. No way I want that because the manual transmission is THE fundamental part of the ride joy this car gives besides the splendid road holding. There is one thing I am going to change on my FL5 and that is the suspension. On the bad Belgian roads the suspension is to stiff, so I ordered the software module of the Type S, and I am not the only one. It would have been a better sale policy if Honda should have given the possibility to choose between the two modules without extra costs when ordering the car. Nevertheless, after already more than a year driving this beast I enjoy it every single moment. Reliability or the lack of is another reason not to choose for a VW.
This is a great review of the Type R! That said, I can say with the amount of money lost during the pandemic, maybe that’s the reason for cutting down on certain features. I’ve herd they released a statement to employees about the amount of money that was spent on utilities when they couldn’t run production. Also, the pay was increased for the associates, that may or may not have affected decision and how much they spent to produce this car. At the end of the day, I’m still trying to decide between the Type R and the Type S, as I have a friend that just purchased the 25 type S.
There are 4 bangers n/a cars literally stomp the Mazda 3 (86 and BRZ) and that’s really sad and is why no one really cares to talk about it; it’s like that one poor behaved kid of the family.
@@AstroZombie1it's more like 5.6 seconds 0-60 but I agree it should be much quicker based on the power numbers. It's likely due to that ancient 6 speed auto they have and then prioritizing comfort over sport
In Victoria Australia, it's the Civic Type R starting at $73,600 plus on road taxes. The Golf R starts $10,000 higher. GTI is about 63k. No Acura available down under. I like its looks and I am 63. No better half to please.
I live in Arizona. Bought a 2023 WRX six months ago for $37,458. With tax and license it came to $41,345. I wanted an AWD for the mountain snow country in Arizona. Actual performance is very close between the Type R, Corolla GR and WRX.
@ubroberts5541 I had a 2000 limited WRX and sold it after 6 years. Big mistake. It cost $50'000 here. It was a four speed auto. Not fuel efficient. They still sell for that today plus tax so high fifties. I still have my MkV GTi after 16 years. Can't afford a new one. Short supply also.
@janoycresnova9156 No we dont. It is our Taxes and import duties on cars. Only cashed up guys abd gal's go for big name cars. I cant even look at a mustang dark horse.$100k. Corvette C8$200k or Z06 $340k. Many folks are stuck with old cars. Government wants us to go Electric. Yeah with what money. Crap power supply that has gone up so much. We are screwed here.
If the Integra had better seats and an optional sunroof, it would be an absolute homerun. The MKVIII Golf R is good on paper but is absolutely plagued with software and quality issues and just isn't that engaging. I am currently shopping this segment and I ended up just ordering the new Model 3 Performance, as much as it pains me. Hope to pick up an ND3 for the weekend in a year or two.
Chose my Civic Type R over the Integra Type S and have no regrets. It's the exclusivity (especially in Canada), the better flowing/integrated wide fenders, the bucket seats, and the +R digital gauge that win out for me. If I want slightly more comfort, I'll eventually swap in the Integra's damper module.
As a chassis engineer myself, do you guys realize how hard it is to engineer a 5 door hatchback of this size and keep the weight under 3,200lbs while still keeping the bank vault structural integrity that this car possesses? Complaining about no rear heated or ventilated seats and no charging for phones seems a little ridiculous in a “Type R” product, especially when (as far as I know, I don’t work for Honda) even higher end Civic models don’t come equipped with those features
My touring has heated rear seats an a wireless charger you think for the price you would get these features but it's probably weight related etc some technical reason behind it
I ordered the CTR 8 months ago, switched to the Integra Type-S few months back when I saw it coming into the market. I must admit it's a superb machine and I'm still uncertain which one looks better. Anyways, been in the 40's with kids & living up north where winters are harsh and roads bumpy, the ITR remains (even if more pricey) the "more responsible" choice. Can't complain with the little exhaust tweak and other goodies Acura added to it also 😆
Have you considered Golf R or Subaru WRX? I don't know how responsible a FWD car with over 300hp going to front wheels will be in the harsh and bumpy roads up north. It already wheel hops and spins like crazy on normal roads.
@@janoycresnova9156 Golf R or WRX would make winter season more enjoyable, yes. But, then I'll have to compromise on the driving experience which Honda is AND reliability. I've seen some comments of owners of the ITS living in the North and with good tires it seems it's not much of a deal... Will have to adapt my driving accordingly also.
I’m 60 years old and drive a Civic Coupe Si…I love the Type R, wing and all, and would get one if I weren’t more focused on retiring in 4 years. My only issue is the high seat bolster, as you mentioned - I suffer from low hanging balls and the high bolsters would be problematic for me on entry and exit.
It is an ACTUAL hatchback. Check out the definition of hatchback and get back. It looks much better like this than it would with a vertical hatch door…looks like a minivan like that; no thanks.
I like the Golf R for what it is but there are way too many glitches and problems with the MK8. I'm hoping the 8.5 is a big step forward in reliability. As a car to actually own I'd pick the Type R or Type S
I would take a Golf R over this car. I sold my MK 5 GTI to a friend when it had 280,000 km on the dial. He's still driving it now with 425,000 km on it. Great cars.
MADE IN JAPAN & reliable. A future COLLECTABLE car. Like a Grand Seiko watch. There is a reason why HONDA power’s the current World Formula One Champion Red Bull Racing! ❤ .
Agree, better more purposeful looking with just a dual, one per side setup or even quad..., twin per side, (per E46 M3 etc). I don't know, this almost makes you think it's got a 3-cylinder!
I'm inclined to say that if you buy and maintain it meticulously, that this will become a collector item in 20-30 years $$$. Golf R is sweet but be prepared to shell out big money on maintenance.
Lol ok , I owned a Golf R for 5 years and it was tuned, zero issues and I drove it hard. Thanks for showing up! p.s. I always hoped a CTR would pull up beside me at some lights so I could laugh at how slow it was
What are your thoughts about the Type R vs miata fun-wise. Wife has 2024 Lexus NX, I have a 2020 ND miata. Bought the miata to keep forever as a daily and later become a weekend car. We have a 1 year old baby. Might need a more practical car in a few more years. Doing okay for now. Should I just keep and pay off the miata and add used gas/ev car in a few years or would this be fun enough to replace the miata.
Type S if can afford the extra money. But if you’re wanting the best bank for your buck, you can buy a Mustang GT with 480 hp for 45 to 47,000 that will smoke all the other cars you mentioned in a drag race and probably can keep up with them on a track. of the Subic type bar was 39,000 it would be a awesome deal.
Unfortunately you misspelled "probably". It won't keep with one at the track unless it has PP and that will be 50K. Also add the reduced capabilities as a daily in case you need or value usable rear seating or cargo storage

I’ve always been a fan of the Civic Type-R. The new one is so much cleaner while still aggressive and bold 😍 great review!
Purely on an aesthetic perspective, I think the Integra smokes all other alternative. I however agree that the price tag is pretty steep.
I hate the Golf R exterior design.
Great video. I’m with Andrea - Type S. But I would miss the better Type R seats and the shift lights. And what’s with no a/c or connectivity in the back for a premium car?
Can’t imagine slogging this beautiful car through the snow and salt infested slush of a Canadian winter ..
I can't imagine spending this much on a front wheel drive with a dumb looking wing. This generation is much improved, looks-wise. The last one was hideous looking at the back.
In addition to that no heated seats or even steering wheel and then you hit a pot hole with that suspension. No thanks
@@vroomgc That is what the Type S is for. Almost the exact same car but with heated steering wheel and seats.
Edit: Plus a softer suspension.
@@mikemccormick6128 Agreed the Type S is a nice upgrade.
I use a red foam microphone windscreen on that burning/frozen shift knob on my '19 R. Great job you two!
I got a the previous gen Type R for MSRP and I love it. I would love to get the newer one but they are getting pretty expensive.
When he said his favorite car on the planet is the Porsche GT3 I smiled, it’s my favorite car on the planet as well…🔥🔥🔥
I had a 2022 sport touring hatch. I really miss that car! I had to sell it because one of my dogs is really sick. If I bought another car, I would definitely look at this one first! Well not this one, but the sport touring hatch CVT! 😂
Hondas have become too expensive recently. This car is awsome but I doubt if it worth the price!🧐
The CTR is the way to go. Looking at price, which just can't be ignored, the ITS comes too close to the TL Type S, so the CTR wins for a more purposeful hot hatch.
Loved the color match Andrea you popped with that red car!
At the end of the day, I’m still trying to decide between the Type R and the Type S, as I have a friend that just purchased the 25 type S.
the "shifter" comments........hilarious; gr8 vid A&Z
I live in Florida. I needed oven mitts once. Went directly to buy a sunshade for the windshield. Love my Type R, a blast to drive!
Wow that red looks awesome on this car.
Can not wait for your thoughts on the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid - Love the duo delivery!
That spoiler at the back looks like an after-thought. Is it even functional? No Mazda 3 turbo as a competitor?
Hell no the Mazda 3 is dirt slow. 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, 250hp and 320ft lbs it makes no sense how it’s so slow maybe it’s made to pull a boat?
There are 4 bangers n/a cars literally stomp the Mazda 3 (86 and BRZ) and that’s really sad and is why no one really cares to talk about it; it’s like that one poor behaved kid of the family.
Over sea they have a body color one
@@AstroZombie1prius 6.6
@@AstroZombie1it's more like 5.6 seconds 0-60 but I agree it should be much quicker based on the power numbers. It's likely due to that ancient 6 speed auto they have and then prioritizing comfort over sport
Wow both been waiting for this exciting video with vivid red colours to boot 🎉🌹
AGREE with Andrea Integra Type S ❤
Zack, wouldn't you wait until the civic hybrid comes out in the summer? If buying a civic? Love the car! Great work!!
Do you all make $200k+ in Australia? What's with your messed up prices?
@janoycresnova9156 No we dont. It is our Taxes and import duties on cars. Only cashed up guys abd gal's go for big name cars. I cant even look at a mustang dark horse.$100k. Corvette C8$200k or Z06 $340k. Many folks are stuck with old cars. Government wants us to go Electric. Yeah with what money. Crap power supply that has gone up so much. We are screwed here.
@@ubroberts5541I love the WRX but can’t get past that big center screen…does it annoy you at all?
If the Integra had better seats and an optional sunroof, it would be an absolute homerun. The MKVIII Golf R is good on paper but is absolutely plagued with software and quality issues and just isn't that engaging. I am currently shopping this segment and I ended up just ordering the new Model 3 Performance, as much as it pains me. Hope to pick up an ND3 for the weekend in a year or two.
It will take take a type r seats swap just fine.
Yeah, Zack nailed it, Golf R(dsg) all day long. But, if I was looking for a second car, Type R makes sense.
2nd car for me Is the Integra type S
Chose my Civic Type R over the Integra Type S and have no regrets. It's the exclusivity (especially in Canada), the better flowing/integrated wide fenders, the bucket seats, and the +R digital gauge that win out for me. If I want slightly more comfort, I'll eventually swap in the Integra's damper module.
I am jealous you managed to get one in Canada. I run the FK8 LE ADS in my 2017 FK8. I wanted a firmer ride.
@@touringteg I got super lucky. Was only required to get the all season mats, trunk liner, and wheel locks, which put it around $600 over MSRP.
No heated seats on a car this expensive is absurd
As a chassis engineer myself, do you guys realize how hard it is to engineer a 5 door hatchback of this size and keep the weight under 3,200lbs while still keeping the bank vault structural integrity that this car possesses? Complaining about no rear heated or ventilated seats and no charging for phones seems a little ridiculous in a “Type R” product, especially when (as far as I know, I don’t work for Honda) even higher end Civic models don’t come equipped with those features
They have them in the Integra
@@Motormouth...no heated rear seats in Integra Type S
My touring has heated rear seats an a wireless charger you think for the price you would get these features but it's probably weight related etc some technical reason behind it
@3:57 she knows what her hand likes. 🤣
YOLO. Buy one, enjoy it, then sell when ready to retire and recoup much of your money (assuming you keep it pristine).
I’m 68 and balls still ok. :). Sometimes you have go with the roll! The R is worth it.
GTI nicely equipped for 31000 US, HARD TO BEAT
Elantra N comes loaded was well. It also has features the typeR doesn't including an auto option. All you do is pick color and transmission.
And way better priced!
Just wish it was an ACTUAL hatchback (vertical rear hatch). And a coupe version of course.
Agree, a "shooting brake" version of both this and the Integra would be great. And the Integra should differentiate itself even further with SHAWD.
It is an ACTUAL hatchback. Check out the definition of hatchback and get back. It looks much better like this than it would with a vertical hatch door…looks like a minivan like that; no thanks.
go with the GR Corolla! Been loving mine for months now that you can get them for MSRP.
About the interior, that’s a Type R thing. Red in the front and regular in the back. That’s how they came and they stayed true to the design.
How does Andrea handle her coffee, cell phone, and do stick shift all at the same time?
Eagles fans or Steely dan get the reference and Andrea Wink was classic!!
This is one of the few hot sedans out there!!!! Great review as usual Zack and Andrea 😍😍😍
It’s not a sedan
It's a hatchback that looks like a sedan
Oh we know what you're thinking with the shifter haahhaha. How bad is the wait to pick these up in Vancouver?
Great review of this little pocket rocket. Its pricey though...
A L U M I N I U M - not A L U M I N U M ;-) see Matt Rife !! Love the review, I'm getting the Championship White Type R next year, cannot wait.
Was her outfit coordinated to match that Type R??? Well done!
I like the Golf R for what it is but there are way too many glitches and problems with the MK8. I'm hoping the 8.5 is a big step forward in reliability. As a car to actually own I'd pick the Type R or Type S
This sure is a fun car to drive so looks hot in that red color.
Would be great to see the coupe brought back.
I would take a Golf R over this car. I sold my MK 5 GTI to a friend when it had 280,000 km on the dial. He's still driving it now with 425,000 km on it. Great cars.
The European market gets the microsuede even in the back seats. I own Type R and I am considering getting the microsuede covering for the back seats.
Love the car, sadly no inventory in BC
Absolutely. Very limited availability in Canada. I would love a red one in BC.
Next Episode: Andrea is tracking a Type R........😉
That would be freaking amazing 😂
Nope , as she said, she prefers the Type S and for many reasons which I agree with.
I had a 2002 sir, and the worst thing about it was the suede on seats. It showed wear very quickly. Should be leather with the red stitching
Looks like a fun car to drive hard!
The mark up on this cars are crazy!! 😒
If you've got young kids in the back you don't want bright red alcantara rear seats
Type R for track , Type S day to day drive and Golf R gremlins in the infotainment and red lights in the dash.
lol 11:11 almost hit the japanese accent there...
You guys say we don’t need to warm up our vehicles in the winter but you NEED heated seats and steering wheels in Vancouver?!?!?&
My son has a Civic So that has the same shifter. He puts a glove over it in the summer because it does get hot
MADE IN JAPAN & reliable. A future COLLECTABLE car. Like a Grand Seiko watch. There is a reason why HONDA power’s the current World Formula One Champion Red Bull Racing! ❤
.
Hate the look of the boy racer exhaust tips
Agree, better more purposeful looking with just a dual, one per side setup or even quad..., twin per side, (per E46 M3 etc). I don't know, this almost makes you think it's got a 3-cylinder!
Ya and the spoiler .. it's too kiddy looking for me and for the money I'd get a BMW or Audi or Acura.
Shout out to Steely Dan!
Thanks for showing up! p.s. I always hoped a CTR would pull up beside me at some lights so I could laugh at how slow it was
another great video motormouth
is no one going to talk about her matching outfit with the car 😊
Only if they sell them for MSRP here in Canada. The cheapest one I found here in Alberta is 70k....
She rocking the fit
Is rocking
I don't care about heated seats, but I would like a gear shift knob that doesn't burn my hand.
So my question. @Motormouth, this or IS500?
Over 45- Acura.
Fan of Tokyo Drift- Civic
That red is FIRE!!!
