A shortcut being discovered in the 90s and not being globally known until 2020 is insane
Older games are probably *more* likely to have stuff like this happen. They didn’t have the luxury of the record keeping we have today. Look what happened with Matt Turk and the punch out scene. Some of the known tech from back then had to be re-discovered because the community had been completely dead for years.
It’s more likely a big time save from the 90s is lost to time than something from the 2010s at this point.
I have one of these for SMB2 and can't replicate it but I know it's not a fever dream lol it happened when i was a kid and always stuck in my brain

At 44:40 I could tell we were watching Kazuya’s run because his red shell setup looks different than Abney’s. That’s when I knew this video had me fully invested, lol!
The way he cuts so sharply inward, it's like watching an elite pitcher. No shame in being a Justin Verlander or Max Scherzer when the Shohei Ohtanis or the Corbin Burneses come along.

I would assume it's actually quite common, the vast majority of any game's players are only vaguely aware of speedrunning, if at all, and of those who do find a skip accidentally I doubt most of them would think to check if it's a known skip, let alone seek out the community to ask
@@FerousFollySomewhat reminds me of the Goldeneye 007 tactic that was accidentally discovered due to a misinterpretation of an existing strat. Because the man who discovered it barely spoke English, he thought you were supposed to look down while speed running certain maps. That specific strat is still in use today (as far as I know)
remind me when someone posted a strat for vice city in SEEMINGLY USELESS GLITCHES THREAD that basicly skipped the 2nd half of the game and was probably the biggest breakthrough in all 3d era gta games, cuting vice city eun in lenght by half, san andreas by around 2 hours
Plus it also makes a lot of sense why many of the people who may know about these and get into speed running wouldn't use it in their attempts or whatever when they start, like imagine you get into speedrunning and you see that nobody else uses the shortcut (that you know) and since you assume that they already know about it, you will probably rationalize that it's simply because it doesn't save time so they don't bother with it.
Said that way, I'm sure there are quite a lot of discoveries that were missed just like that
I love how you don't throw everything at the viewer from the start. You introduce strategies mid-video, like the Kalimari Desert one at 21:30. You explain most of the big strategies in the run, but not all at once.
Imagine if one day, a guy starts speedruning under the nickname of "YourMeat". Then trains for thousands of hours, give it all and challenge the whole world, just to see one day on TH-cam a video from summoning salt called : "The quest to beat YourMeat"

This is a great analogy for rivalry speedrunning
I thought of it like that at first but it's more than that... all speedrunners have the same chance of getting the best seed via rng, but only the best player will be able to capitalize on it.
The problem with that analogy, is that whatever this 'slot machine' gives you, you still have to have the skills to use it properly. The best RNG won't help you, if you're a shit player.

If the players were able to perfectly execute every skip then there is only RNG left that decides the time.

Abney is the GOAT, but what really stood out to me in this story is the determination of Kazuya. Here is a guy who didn't have nearly the skillset to challenge Abney initially, but decided to power through even if would take 50k attempts of a 20+ minute run. A true demonstration of perseverance.

What's sad, I think, is abney actually has the driving skills. The reason he started getting beat was because the time skips removed large parts of the actual driving. In fact, what the poster fails to mention is that abney currently holds the title for the "No skips" run and has for years.
@@JJokerMoreau That's part of speedrunning though and is why multiple categories exist. Skips are a huge part and Abney seems to struggle with some of them compared to Kazuya.

Why are we meant to know him? I was expecting this to be the username of Matthias, the guy who was the dominating player in the last Mario Kart 64 video, but it isn’t
@@Pikaton659we know him if you watched the video that grew the biggest for Summoning Salt, the world record for Choco mountain. In that Abney became the star of the video as he went from an random person who was like ranked 50th to getting the first ever weathertenko, then later being the only person I think currently to hit that trick 3 times in an row.
Since then he also appeared in the other MK64 videos such as the last one being where he and others were keeping Matthias from getting all 32 records in Mk64
Referring to Bismuth as his archrival is top tier character development.
What's the history between salt and Bismuth? I know he also makes in depth history videos on games, but was there some actual rivalry between them?

As of 4 days ago, Abney317 is back in first with a 22:58:68 with a 15 second lead.
Two high level speed runners running a game at the same time is one of the most intense things ever on the same tier as watching your favorite team and they’re rivals going at it.
The self-control abney displays in the face of frustration and bad luck is absolutely inspiring - as is the skill and dedication on display by every player here.
I would imagine with how many runs these guys do, it would put you in an early grave to be high-strung about every run that seems positive.

The summoning-salt-verse has gone for long enough to the point where Abney has gone from the hero who pulled off the first triple weathertenko, that lived for long enough to turn into the villain that prevented MR’s world record perfection on the no shortcuts category at several different times, to the protagonist of his own story in the full game run. Really speaks volumes about the quality of this channel.

One thing I respect about Kazuya is the sheer confidence that he’s going to get the right item, Abney is staying out until he gets what he needs Kazuya says “wouldn’t it be better to be on my way to the trick?”

The difference is abney is trying to get slight gains to consolidate his world record, and Kazuya is trying to demolish any of his previous attempts in order to take the world record even once. Simply because it had been several years since anyone had even come close to taking away the world record from abney. They have different mindsets and different goals for this reason.

46:23 this has to be *the* hypest summoning salt segment I have ever seen, even as someone who's watched all his videos. Ambient music can usually make or break a documentary in appeal, but it's something summoningsalt has not only mastered, but become known for in the content creation space. Matching the tension he's built through the whole video, without a single word, just the right tune, pacing and editing makes it 100x more impactful.

The fact that you do things like make freeze frames any time the lightning bolt was used to avoid the flashing lights shows the amount of skill and consideration you put into video editing. Another banger of a video, great job!

So that was an anti-epileptic thing? Looking it up, the lightning affect flashing is quite mild; the sky blinks once or twice. That would be quite frightening to have such few flash-like things be able to cause such a massive issue. I hope it would take severe epilepsy for that level of stimuli to take you out. Anime shows, game shows, casinos, and Vegas in general, would just all have to be the worst.

I showed this to a friend of mine who's not really into videogames, let alone speedrunning. However, even he had fond memories of this from back in the day.

This is such an awesome story. You did an excellent job and props to all the players involved. I love stories of people trying to attain perfection or become the best at a niche craft, and this video has introduced me to speedrunning which definitely scratches that itch.

Its simple. What keeps them going is the quest to become the best. Its like in sports, people grind + train all day to get better and to become some of the very best to ever do it. Being known as one of the greatest in something you're passionate about is everything to some.

Abney has the record back with a sub 23! Watched it live and all I can say is I doubt anyone beats it unless some new strats are created. His luck and skill was insane.

When you showed the apirl 2022 run trying not to disclose who had gotten it early I still knew it was Kazuya because his red shell skip set up in royal raceway is slightly different than abney's
I've never watched a Mario karr speedrun before. At that point it was obvious, kazuya's technique has a very specific style comparatively.
yup that's what i noticed haha, as soon as SS started that clip i was like "i'm just gonna look at the royal raceway red shell method" xD
I could also tell from comparing Abney and Kazuya's game captures. Kazuya's game is a bit more muted color-wise in comparison to Abney's. Still did a pretty good job for the layman, who don't pay close attention the different set ups of different runners or a slight differences in video quality.
